ST. MARY PRESCHOOL – Meet Preschool Teacher ARIANA MARQUEZ

Mrs. Ariana Marquez is one of our Preschool teachers. She is married with three daughters: one at the preschool, one at the elementary school and another in high school. She is a fully credentialed teacher from Palomar College, has worked at School of the Madeline in San Diego for 3 years and is continuing her education.

Ariana loves spending time with her family, going to the movies, the beach, having family nights and watching her oldest daughter's sports activities.

Her commitment to our community shows her passion for teaching and faith in action. Ariana expresses appreciation for her work, telling us "I would like to thank you for supporting the preschool and entrusting me with your children as we care, guide and teach our Catholic faith and values."

Ask for angelic help and support and that the Holy Spirit would guide. Come with expectant hearts - that He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it. Don't be discouraged if you don't see many prayer warriors when you are there - remember, God changed the whole world with 12 apostles. And please help us get the word out to our parishes, churches, prayer groups and leadership. May all the good you do come back to you exponentially and may God keep you, your loved ones and possessions safe and protected, to His honor and glory. --Joanne Strantz.

Abortion Stops a Beating Heart

Abortion advocates usually refer to the human being growing in her/his mother's womb in dehumanizing terms like "product of conception" and suggest that most abortions are done before fetal organs are functioning.

Actually, the vast majority are done after the fetal heart has begun beating. A baby's heart begins to beat at about 21 or 22 days after fertilization. That's at about 3 weeks of development. The vast majority of abortions in the United States are done well after this point.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

One of our great treasures is the way the Church has frequently flourished under unfavorable conditions, like the grape ivy on the mantel that refuses to die no matter how infrequently you water it or open the drapes. Like the apartheid laws in South Africa in the last century, the penal laws of Ireland were aimed at depriving the majori-ty population of basic human rights. The Protestant par-liament of Ireland enacted laws limiting the practice of Catholicism. The goal was to force conversion from "popery" to the Church of Ireland, and additional laws took aim at Jews, non-Anglicans, and Quakers. There were laws against intermarriage, laws against Catholics being lawyers (there was a one-hundred-pound fine), a law granting lifelong income to priests who became Protestant, and a ban on weapons. In fact, until 1793, a Catholic man had to recruit and pay a Protestant man to serve in the local militia in his place! As if family life is not complicated enough in any age, the sons of a de-ceased father could divide his land equally, unless one became Protestant. In that case all would go to him! When allowed, new Catholic churches had to be built of wood, not stone, be off a main road or city square, have no steeple or bell, and be called a "chapel." Catholic "Emancipation" was largely secured by 1829, but even up to the founding of the Irish State in the 1920s, some effects of the laws endured. No wonder that poor Irish immigrants to the United States frequently built glorious-ly beautiful churches as their first act on free soil! --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
