Ultimate Love vs. the Ultimate Jerk…
“God is love,” as Saint John tells us (1 John 4:8). It follows that everything God does, and everything He tells us to do, is somehow related to love. We see this in this Sunday’s Readings from Sacred Scripture. In the First Reading, God tells the Israelites to not mistreat aliens (the non-Jewish people who lived among them), widows, orphans or the poor (Exodus 22:20-26). In the Second Reading, Saint Paul commends the Christians of Thessalonica for the kind reception they gave him, and for being a good example to others (1 Thessalonians 5:1-10). In the Gospel, Jesus tells the Pharisees that the greatest commandment in the Law of Moses is the two-fold commandment about love of God and neighbor. He says, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:34-40, see also Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18) In the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), Our Lord makes it clear that “your neighbor” means everyone.
God created man and woman in His image, and so with the ability to love like God does. But the Fall of our first parents, at the instigation of Satan, took away that ability. Since then, we human beings, on our own, can’t love God or our neighbors like we should or want to (hopefully). Thankfully, Jesus Christ came to restore that ability to us. In fact, we can love even better than Adam and Eve could at the beginning, because, as sinners, we know what it is like to be forgiven, so we can have compassion on other people whose lives are messed up. Plus, through faith and baptism, God actually lives in us, to love through us!
We are not in heaven yet, so God’s life coexists in our world, and often in our souls, alongside sin. One sin that sadly effects many people is domestic abuse or violence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Violence between spouses and other people in intimate relationships is one of the tragic effects of original sin, which everyone (except Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary) has been born with since Adam and Eve rebelled against God.
I doubt if many people wake up one day and say to themselves, “I want to hurt someone I love today.” Domestic abuse and violence generally come about because the perpetrators have trouble with excessive anger, with a desire to control and gain power over someone else, or with both of those issues. Domestic abuse and violence take many forms. These include abortion, insults, threats, yelling, hitting, beating and killing. Thanks be to God, there is therapeutic help available for both victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse. Here are some local resources: Perpetrators and victims of abuse also need spiritual help. That because the devil and his fellow fallen angels like to take advantage of people’s weaknesses, sins, hurts and wounds to inflict further damage. The devil is the ultimate abuser…or, you could also say, the ultimate jerk.
Thanks be to God, there is abundant help available against evil spiritual powers too. Like the “Our Father” and “St. Michael” prayers. Another resource is a brand new booklet called Prayers Against the Powers of Darkness.” I found out about it on the website of the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops). To find it, on the home page of the USCCB click on “Issues and Action,” then “Get Involved.” You should see an image of the book on the right. (At least it was there when I wrote this, on Oct. 22nd.) If you click on the image, more information comes up, including that the booklet ‘contains the complete text of “Supplications Which May Be Used by the Faithful Privately in Their Struggle Against the Powers of Darkness,”’ which is Appendix II of Exorcisms and Related Supplications, which is the ritual book used by Catholic exorcists.
Let’s also ask St. Raphael to pray for us. His name means “God heals.” Whatever kind of domestic abuse or violence that we or our loved ones may have suffered or committed, God wants to bring us healing. Love and light are always stronger than hate and darkness. Let’s take advantage of the many ways that Ultimate Love—God—provides for us to move forward into healing and hope. ~ Yours in Christ, Father Rudolph

Saint of the Day – Saint Maria Bertilla Boscardin
Anna Francesca Boscardin was born in 1888 at Brendola, near the city of Vicenza, in northern Italy. Her parents were poor peasants, and her father a violent and often drunk man, from whom Anna and her mother sometimes had to flee for protection. She had very little schooling because she had to work to help support her family. Her parish priest allowed her to receive First Holy Communion earlier than usual. He also gave her a copy of the catechism, which she read every day for the rest of her life. When she was a teenager she joined the Sisters of Saint Dorothy at Vicenza and was given the name Maria Bertilla. She started out working in the laundry and bakery of the convent. Eventually she was allowed to work in a hospital and gained a reputation of having a special gift of helping sick and disturbed children. During World War I, Maria worked on the front lines taking care of the wounded. About this time, she prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary: “Dear Mother, I do not ask you for visions, or revelations, or favors, even spiritual ones…In this life I want only what you want; just to believe, without any proof or enjoyment, and to suffer joyfully without any consolation…to work hard for you until I die.” She also wrote that all she had of her own was her will, and she was determined with the help of God’s grace never to seek to follow it. She tried to do this purely for the love of Jesus, as though neither heaven nor hell existed, not even the comfort of a clear conscience. Maria suffered for years from a painful tumor, and after an unsuccessful operation, died on October 20, 1922. After her death a number of cures were attributed to her intercession. Saint Maria Bertilla Boscardin, pray for us! Priesthood Sunday– October 29 Priesthood Sunday is celebrated throughout the United States this year on October 29th. It is a day set aside to reflect upon and affirm the role of our priests in the life of the Church. Priesthood Sunday is promoted by the United States Council of Serra International. Members of the Serra Club of North-Minneapolis have made available Bookmark / Prayer Cards to be distributed at all the Masses as a means to remember in prayer our pastors and priests who serve us. You may also wish to drop a note of appreciation to our priests thanking them for providing the gift of the sacraments and for the many ways they serve our Church and community. The Serra Club, whose patron is Saint Junipero Serra, is an apostolate dedicated to promoting vocations to the ordained priesthood and vowed religious life in the Catholic Church.
