THIS WEEK AT THE CENTER… THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 1, 2018

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the “Military Vicariate.” In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the “Archdiocese for Military Services, USA.” Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catho-lics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He was as-signed as a “schoolmaster,” but he sought out and minis-tered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the “Nuns of the Battlefield” (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prej-udice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese.

Breaking Bread Homeless Ministries News From The Streets… “Bless Those Who Curse You” Luke 6:28

By Mary Martha Primerano When we hit the streets we come with the (soul) message that God loves you! He would do anything for you! Think and ponder this for a moment. John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him would not die but have eternal life.” For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son! – Not 1 of his son’s, but his only Son. How do we, Breaking Bread Homeless Ministries communicate this to a dying world? By stooping down to the forgotten, alone, and yes even the ornery. To remind them that it’s going to be alright. God is not mad at you, but madly in love with you! Like Di-ane who sleeps outside a downtown bookstore, (the owner’s of the store love her, and allow her to stay.) One Saturday the Team felt led to minister forgiveness to Diane, and her three friends between the ages of 50 and 70. We spoke to them about how important it is for us to forgive, and not only that, but bless those who curse you according to Luke 6:28. Well that’s when things began to get interesting! Diane shared how she does believe in everything we said, but there is this 1 woman who she finds hard to forgive because this woman falsely accused her of something that would eventual-ly land Diane in jail for a long time. “I lost all of those years from my life because of this woman’s false accusation of me! Now I just can’t forgive her for that!” And you know what? Diane is right! We can’t in our own abil-ity that is why the Holy Spirit was sent to help us. He is our Helper. To help us do difficult things like forgive someone. That’s exactly what we did when we asked the Holy Spirit to help Diane forgive, and not only that, but to bless her ac-cuser who was now dying of AIDS. When she was done praying she thanked us for walking her through this, and told the others that we are her church, teaching her to do the right thing. Walt always reminds those we minister to that it’s never good to harbor bitterness in our heart because bitterness is like you drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.

Fr. Nelson Medina, O.P
