Student projects from a variety of health disciplines were presented, and six awards were presented. “It’s exciting to see the growing interest in academic research in our community. In the past three years we’ve more than doubled the number of entrants in this event – we had over 30 participants this year,” said Laureen Larson, Director of Academic Health Sciences. “It’s also impressive to see the relationship of many of these projects with our provincial health care priorities. Many of the projects have links to primary health care, care of our seniors, enhancing care for our surgical patients, and enhancing communication.” “The RQHR is committed to promoting and supporting academic and clinical research that makes a difference in the lives of patients and community members. Providing students and residents with opportunities to foster their natural curiosity in research will position them to be future leaders in health care.” said Dr. Elan Paluck, Director of Research for the RQHR. Award recipient and first time researcher Matthew Smith has learned a lot through the research experience. “As I got further into the project and began interviewing nurses and surgeons, my focus shifted more towards the patient,” said Smith. “I started to focus more on defining the shared decision making process in relation to the diagnosis and how to apply it so that patients get similar treatment regardless of location and circumstances.” Awards of Excellence were handed out for the following: “The RQHR is committed to promoting and supporting academic and clinical research that makes a difference in the lives of patients and community members.” Dr. Elan Paluck Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region

Make the most powerful gift you can to your community through the Annual Giving CampaignEmployees and physicians can donate through the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region’s (RQHR’s) Giving Campaign until November 4. Giving is easy and affordable through the Annual Giving Campaign payroll deduction. Below is just one example of how your donation can make a difference.

Donate to the United Way United Way is working to increase overall community awareness and involvement in the issues around the success of our children. We need our donors, volunteers, partners and supporters to engage and mobilize around community strategies which will move the needle on improving the outcomes for children.

United Way’s efforts help lift people out of poverty, build independence, create safe neighborhoods and strong families, and support children through their development years, high school graduation and beyond. All the while, United Way Regina continues

to support 32 funded partners, operating over 250 programs, and positively affecting the lives of over 100,000 people. Below is just one of many ways donations to the United Way have improved the lives of others.

Kids in transition shelter (KITS) KITs provides care for children in need of housing, while the Ministry of Social Services provides other options for the best living arrangement for each child. It is operated by the YWCA.

KITs provides shelter for up to 10 children from the ages of infancy to 12 years old. The recommended maximum stay for any child is 15 days. In 2012, 181 children came through the

shelter. The average length of stay was 52 days.

Two emergency receiving shelters, operated in partnership with the Ministry of Social Services, also complement KIT’s services. Parker Place, which opened in May 2012, and Evergreen House are designed for children who, for a variety of reasons, are harder to place.

Parker Place provides shelter for up to four children, from eight to 12 years of age. Evergreen House also has space for children from infancy to seven years of age. All children are referred by the Ministry of Social Services.

• The average length of stay for children at Parker Place was 147 days.

• 11,700 meals were served at all three KITS’ residencies.

• The longest stay was 246 days.

• The number of children who stayed at a KITS shelter who were four years of age or younger was 63.
