Nativity Catholic Church 2 October 22, 2017

From the Pastor’s Desk October – Respect Life Month (continued) – Today we hear a gospel that perfectly grounds our reflections and actions during Respect Life month. As I mentioned in a column posted here two weeks ago, when Catholics hear “respect life” most think of speaking out against abortion, advocating for the unborn, and protecting life from conception to natural death. While Catholics are to be passionate in these arenas, a “consistent life ethic” also means promoting the dignity of life in all its various stages. Such a stance is Catholic to the core and means making statements, reflecting on, and working on issues such as: peace, economic justice, alleviating hunger, securing health care for all, standing against capital punishment, promoting fair immigration and refugee policies – to name a few – in addition to working on protecting the unborn.

Today’s gospel begins with the Pharisees - who are by all accounts holy, religious leaders - going off and plotting to kill Jesus. Jesus, taking on the role of a prophet, upsets the Pharisees in their level of religious and social comfort. He calls them to a higher standard. And they are angry and even murderous because of that. The Pharisees, in turn, begin to rile up their own disciples, sending those disciples to Jesus to take him on, attempting to discredit him and undermine him before the masses.

As we hear this gospel and as we observe Respect Life month, I / we are forced to think about our treatment of others. Respect Life forces me to ask: how do I deal with those with whom I disagree or don’t like? Do I respect them and acknowledge their right to express an opinion? Or, because they are different from me or have differing viewpoints, do I plot and actively pursue discrediting them and work toward undermining them? While we are quite capable of doing this by spreading rumors and gossiping, perhaps a more sinister platform for doing such harm is Facebook. While Facebook and other social media platforms are wonderful tools for informing, updating, and inspiring actions for good on the spur of the moment, such platforms can be diabolical when they are used to undermine and detract the reputation of others—all in a bubble of seeming anonymity and protection. The other day I heard someone say that the following judgement should be used before we post something: is this something I would say face-to-face to another – hoping to dialogue with them in an attempt to learn where they’re coming from? Or am I simply using this platform to rip to shreds another’s character and reputation. If it is the latter, it is sinful.

The bottom line is this: respect for life begins with my effort to respect the person who is before me. Respecting that they are created in God’s image. Respecting that they can have an opinion that is different from mine. Respecting that they may not share my faith. Respecting that they may be of a different race or sexual orientation. Acknowledging and respecting that I may not agree with another, but am willing to civilly engage in dialogue allows me know who this other person REALLY is. When that happens, respecting the life of the unborn, those in need, and the elderly, follows.

Mission Sunday – Today the Universal Church celebrates Mission Sunday. Let us pray for all those who do missionary work in our world, sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ and his Church. May their efforts to evangelize others lead to a better and holier world.

Weekly Reflection for October 22, 2017 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

(courtesy of catholicsteward.com)

The last line of today’s Gospel Reading from St. Matthew contains one of the more well known of Jesus’ quotes. When asked a bit of a trick question by the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?”

Jesus responds by asking them whose image is on their Roman coins, to which they respond simply “Caesar’s.”

Jesus’ response to their reply is known to most of us, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” The Lord’s answer is far more perceptive than we might think, and it gives another message to us, one we must always remember. If we are followers of Christ, and if we work to be His disciple, the Lord might ask us, “Whose image is on your soul?” We have learned in the First Chapter of Genesis that God created us in His image.

The coin may be stamped with Caesar’s image, but each of us is stamped with God’s image. Thus, Jesus is implying that the coin may be Caesar’s but each of us belongs to God. In that regard we should be striving to be all those things to which Jesus called us.

That is in effect what a stewardship way of life is — recognizing that God is in each of us, we are to place ourselves in service to God and to one another. That is what is really meant by “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”
