“Something strange, a sound like raindrops

falling when the sun is shining bright, there is not

a cloud in sight.

Something strange, I hear my people crying and

it makes me feel bad to see my people sad all

around me.

Flowing like a river through the countryside, I

gather all the tears my people cried. I take them to

the ocean where they’re purified. Maybe then, my

people will smile, and I’ll sit here unknown all

the while.” —-Chris Shaffer

Chalice Extinguishing Chalice Extinguishing Chalice Extinguishing Chalice Extinguishing

We live, we die, and like the grass and

trees renew ourselves from the soft clods of

the grave. Stones crumble and decay, faiths

grow old and they are forgotten, but new

beliefs are born. The faith of the villages is

dust now, but it will grow again, like the

trees. May serenity circle on silent wings

and catch the whisper of the winds."

The Lafayette Urban Ministry (LUM) is an

organization of more than 40 churches that serves as a

social safety net for Lafayette’s needy children and

families.

For over 40 years, LUM has worked to give back the

hope, the future, and the self-respect to low-income

people in the Greater Lafayette area. We take an

active role in trying to change social injustices and

improve the quality of life for the poor of Indiana.
