Ingathering Reminder October 6

th is Ingathering Sunday, the last day

to bring the supplies for the school kits and the personal care kits. Samples of the kits are on display in the back of the Sanctuary. The supplies will be packed on October 7

th and

delivered to the truck for Lutheran World Relief on October 12

th.

Kid’s Church Kid’s Church began Sunday, September 8, 2019. The kids begin in church with their parents and then after the Children's Sermon the kids go with the teacher to Kids Church until communion. The kids take communion with their parents and stay with them for the remainder of the Worship Service.

Teachers for October are: October 6: Bryan and Nikki Strohl; October 13: Tracey Weidner; October 20: OPEN; October 27: OPEN.

At Faith United we commune all ages, and in fifth grade we provide age-appropriate education about the Sacrament of Holy Communion. During Worship on Sunday, October 27th we will celebrate the milestone of learning about Holy Communion with our fifth graders (and sixth graders who haven’t received this education yet). We will have two dates when we meet for “First Communion” Class: Saturday, October 5th from 9:00-10:00 AM, and Saturday, October 12th from 9:00-10:00 AM.

“This Fellow Welcomes Sinners...and Eats With

Them.” In the readings that are popping up in the lectionary this fall, you might notice that we are hearing quite a bit about just who is welcome at God’s table. In Luke 15, right before Jesus tells the parable about the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son, we hear the phrase that is the title of this article grumbled by the Pharisees and the scribes—the religious leaders of the day. They, the people who supposedly know God well and are in charge of stewarding the worship of God in their community, are unhappy about this man named Jesus. This fellow welcomes sinners—the people who should be punished and shamed for their behavior! And not only that—he eats with them, too! Shouldn’t Jesus know better? Shouldn’t he know that these are the wrong people to spend time with? Shouldn’t he know that spending time with these unclean people will make him unclean, too?

The religious leaders in this story love to grumble and groan about those who are welcomed by God. They want to believe that God’s love follows rules—that it is available to those who work to make themselves worthy, but that it is not given freely. They work hard to justify the exclusion of those who are unlike them. They don’t realize that in doing this, they exclude Jesus—God among us—from their midst.

As human beings, we are not always as different from these Pharisees and scribes as we might like to think. We make mistakes, we judge others for being different than us, and we even find ways to justify the exclusion of others. We might not always like that Jesus welcomes those unlike us to eat with him and be fed by forgiveness and love. It is important for us to be honest about our own brokenness. The gospel (or good news) of Jesus’ wide welcome at his table is that even when we grumble and even when other people grumble about us, there is a place for all of us at the table.

As Lutherans we believe that Jesus Christ is fully present in the meal of bread and wine that we consume at the sacrament of Holy Communion. We believe that God is in the food that we take into our bodies, and thus is in us as we leave this place to live in relationship with others and the world. That whenever we share this bread and cup, Jesus is with us—feeding us, loving us, forgiving us. This meal is pure gift.

At Faith United the multitude of types of bread that you bring from your homes for us to use during communion reflects the diversity of our community, and reflects the variety of different dinner tables that Jesus shows up at. When we bring in bread that

comes from our homes and reflects the regular stuff of our lives, we are reminded of how Jesus shows up in the midst of this ordinary, material world. Jesus chooses bread and wine for the sacrament on purpose—he wants us to think of the gift of this holy meal even when we’re sitting at our dinner tables at home.

As we prepare some of our younger people to celebrate the gift of Holy Communion at the end of the month of October, we are all reminded of how God uses this sacrament to knit us together and to make us whole. The young people taking communion classes this month will be encouraged to think about a prayer that they might recite as they approach the altar to receive the gift of God’s grace in physical elements. I encourage you to wonder for yourself—what prayer might you cling to as you give thanks for the gift of God’s love in the meal of Holy Communion this month?

Our God is one who not only welcomes sinners, but also eats with them. Eats with us. Thanks be to God.

Wednesday September 4, 2019 - 7:00 PM FUEL Council Members Present - Tim Hegeman, Bruce Carpenter, Jennie Weinhold, Pastor Marissa, Deb Demler, Lori Stover, Ellen Houser, Terri Kilrain, Terry Burkholder, Scott Gola, and Jim Kreider. Traci Krick was excused from meeting. Meeting called to order by Tim Hegeman, President. Devotions - Pastor Marissa shared a devotional from a Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals Consent Agenda - Minutes of July 13, 2019 Council Meeting Minutes and Committee Reports Pastor’s Report - (Pastor Marissa): Mission and Ministry Highlights: Summer Book Club - went very well! Pastor Marissa has new book planned for next book club; details to be included in September newsletter. Vacation Bible School - had 39 children attend and approximately $400 donations collected; to be donated to Domestic Violence Shelter. Denver Day Worship went well! Rod Redcay reported that transportation begins Monday (September 9th) between Declaration House and Ephrata Library (3 times/day Monday-Friday). Pastor is looking forward to Confirmation and Fall Programs beginning this month. Upcoming: Sunday, September 8th - God’s Work, Our Hands Sunday Acts of Love served 1369 kids in 2019, and 299 Adults. Prayer Priorities: For Gene Heft, who is in Hospice. For the Daub, White and Whitcomb families, who mourn the death of loved ones. Challenges/Updates: Pastor Marissa is taking vacation September 19-26. Reminder - Pastor Glenn Beard is providing pastoral supply on Sunday, September 22nd. Audio versions of Pastor Marissa’s sermons are available on the FUEL website. FUEL is scheduled to host Cocalico Ministerium on Wednesday, October 2nd at 8:30 AM. Council Actions and Discussion: FUEL has new members (Bob and Gloria Gates and her sister, Jo), who are planning to join our church. Plans to welcome them with Congregation to follow. Treasurer’s Report - (Scott) Scott provided a summary report comparing August 2018 to August 2019 prior to the meeting for Council review, which included a comparison of income from offering envelopes, expenses incurred and checking account balances (as a comparison). Overall, there were positive trends reported yet Finance Committee will continue to remain focused on disciplined expenditures. Scott led a discussion regarding the establishment and use of Endowment Funds; these types of funds create longevity for the church. In addition, FUEL must follow the Constitution and conduct a vote with the Congregation before these types of funds are used. In addition, these funds are created solely to support the mission of the church. Scott confirmed that monetary transfers from FUEL checking account to Peter’s Porch account is expected to be completed by year end. Committee Highlights - Peter’s Porch - Terry B. Next Quarterly Meeting scheduled is for Tuesday, September 24

th.

Reamstown Park Association asked for a donation for the use of their cooler. Compliance review is scheduled for Thursday, September 5th. Family Ministry - Terri K. In addition to Family Ministry report, Terri reminded Council of the Oktoberfest Event planned for Saturday, October 26th from 4:00-6:00 PM. Details to follow. Old Business - IT/Technology: FUEL Website - Bruce is working on cleaning up the website. Audio sermons are loaded. FUEL Sound System - Dave B. is researching new sound system and sound Board for church. New computers - Deb is working with Dell on a bid, for laptop and Dual monitors and docking station with office suite. Deb to follow up

with a tax exempt certificate and waiting to hear back regarding ELCA discounts and Labor Day sale. Building WIFI - needs to be reviewed, and possibly updated; Deb to follow up with Blue Ridge/Penn Tele Data. Also looking for company to provide Networking Support to new computer system. Church Windows - Scott and Matt L. are working together on this transition. Dog Park - Shirley reported that FUEL has been depositing money on behalf of the Dog Park. AED Training - (Lori) and is scheduled for Wednesday, September 11th at FUEL. The following people are signed up for training: Pastor Marissa, Tim H., Scott G., and Deb Demler. The cost will be $35/person and payable to Richard Fischer. Narthex Project - (Terri K.) Reported we are waiting on new cabinet (Gerry Phillips is coordinating). Deb D. found 36” tables that can nest when not in use but can also be pushed together to make larger table as needed. Paving Project - (Jim) estimated cost $47-$50K from Hackman Paving, for both lots next to church including back alley. Plan in place to redirect water along alley to street. Sidewalks to also be paved. Social Hall Rental - “Senior Night Out” - had 37 seniors, scheduled for every other month on the 3rd Tuesday (this had been previously discussed and approved by Council). Budget - (Scott) Finance Committee is under discussion regarding anticipated Salem Campus income. Capital improvements, building maintenance, and ongoing budgetary needs are all under consideration. Anything outside of normal budget will need to be reviewed by Finance Committee. Sale Of Salem Update - (Tim) Sales Agreement has been signed, with Title Search in process and Settlement is in planning stages. Tim to follow up with Insurance once property is sold. Building to be sold “as is” and Luthercare is up and running for school year. Upcoming Dates: September 8th - God’s Work, Our Hands Service Project (Pastor Marissa and Confirmation Class) includes painting wall of kids’ room, Craft station (making cards), yardwork for Evelyn Leisey’s and Traci Krick’s homes, and giving Bibles to the younger children. September 14th - Mission Breakfast (Saturday) 7:00-10:00 AM October 26th - Oktoberfest (Saturday) 4:00-6:00 PM November 10th - Soup And Study Class (following worship) December 1st - Hanging of the Greens (following worship) December 15th - Covered Dish Christmas Party (following worship) Meeting was adjourned at 8:30 PM following the Lord’s Prayer. Council Minutes - Steeple Project Tuesday, September 10, 2019

An email was distributed by Jim Kreider, FUEL Property Chair on Saturday, September 7, 2019, to FUEL Congregation Council as follows: The Property Committee has recently discovered a leak and water damage to the church steeple. Immediate attention to the issue is necessary to avoid further complications. The repairs would involve cleaning and replacement of joint material and repair to the roofing and structural support. Property Committee received 2 quotes on the repair work for the roofing and structural work: GSM - $16,250.00; Sensenig - $4,475.00 The Property Committee suggested accepting the bid from Sensenig. They also shared a quote for additional treating, cleaning, and caulking of stone and mortar areas from Achey Construction for $2,750.00. In completing the job, the repair work would be done by Sensenig and then Achey would follow with their portion. Property Committee’s recommendation was to accept the Sensenig and Achey bids and move forward with the necessary work ASAP. They urged that this work was of immediate concern and needed to be completed to assure that more damage was not done, thus secure the steeple. The project was also time-sensitive to receive approval from Council to move forward with the Vendors so they can schedule and complete the work before winter and

snowy conditions. Total Bid cost of Project: $7,225.00. Property proposed Council to approve an amount up to $8,000.00 to complete the project. The Funds to cover these costs will be drawn from investments therefore approval from Council is needed. A motion was made by Jim Kreider and seconded by Tim Hegeman to approve funding for the Steeple Repairs in the amount up to $8,000.00. Jim asked Council members to “reply all” to the email with their vote on the motion. The following votes were reported via email from Jim Kreider to Jennie Weinhold, FUEL Secretary on Tuesday, September 10, 2019: All in favor: Jim Kreider, Pastor Becklin, Terry Burkholder, Deb Demler, Terri Kilrain, Jennie Weinhold, Lori Stover, Scott Gola, Tim Hegeman, and Bruce Carpenter. Sunday, September 1, 2019 Attending: Jim Kreider, Jim Stewart, Craig Stover Agenda Items: Old Business Updates: Parking Lot Paving - Hackman Paving is booked for late 2019 or early 2020; Rear of Sanctuary - Fridge installed, waiting for cabinet (Jerry Phillips ordered) Corner painted by JK; Ramp Entrance Roof - Planning Stages, Jim Stewart is drawing up a proposal; Gabe investigating HVAC - There is a leak in the cooling system; Craig investigating Steeple work, will have bids by our next Council Meeting; Painting Shed - Jim to complete; Picnic Table - will be moved and donated to the Denver Park this week; General Weeding and Garden Care - Jim to coordinate with Lori. Jim waiting on a call back from TruGreen. Mowing by someone in the congregation? Jim will Investigate possible volunteers. Spreadsheet and Inspection Schedule, Property Committee information is organized. New Business: Confirmation Room Painting - Jim K. will coordinate this on the work day. Canvas frames were secured for painting by confirmands instead of painting the wall. Next Meeting - October Open Space, plan to do “walk through” of church interior and exterior areas.

Faith United Open Space Meeting Finance Committee

Sunday, September 1, 2019 Attending: Scott Gola, Jeff Hartman Jeff and Scott discussed setting guidelines for the definition of what the Endowment Fund is and how it is to properly be used and dispersed. Jeff stressed the importance in setting guidelines in how the money will be used and to whom it is going to as part of FUEL’s missions. Council, followed by the Congregation, will have to vote on the documents ultimately. Scott and Jeff both agree that a flat withdrawal rate be set at 4% to which the funds will be withdrawn from the Endowment Fund each year and its determined use be dispersed according to the guidelines of the Endowment document. Upon disbursement of funds, Finance Committee will have to monitor, document, and audit said disbursements to ensure funds are being used in accordance with Endowment guidelines. Scott and Jeff also discussed writing up guidelines of any contributions made to the Endowment Fund in how the funds are to be used (restricted or not restricted as deemed by the donor) of which is to be documented and kept on file either physically, electronically or both. It is the intention of the Finance Committee to have a “Final Draft” to present to Council for a vote and then carried forward for a Congregational Vote. The hope of the Finance Committee is to have these guidelines and document in place to be voted upon at the Congregational Meeting In December and to become effective January 1, 2020. Meeting Ended at 11:30 AM.

Family Ministry/Fellowship Committee September 9, 2019

Oktoberfest is scheduled for October 26 4 to 6 PM. Food will be supplied i.e. hotdogs and hamburger barbecue. Costumes are optional; there will be games for all ages. Sign-up sheet to go out this Sunday.

We have planned a Soup and Study on Sunday, November 10 after church. We will supply the soup and Pastor will supply the study. Christmas Party is now scheduled for Sunday, December 15. This is still a tentative date. It will also be after church starting at 11 and will be a potluck lunch we will have Christmas music and hopefully Santa will show up. We have a tentative date for the spring fling with Mellingers for April 26. More on that to come later. The cabinet came in for the back of the church to go with the refrigerator and it looks beautiful. Waiting for Tyler to move the outlet to the coffee pot. Pastor Appreciation Day Pastor Appreciation Day (Sunday, October 13)

began with the establishment of Clergy Appreciation Month. In Timothy 1 (5:17), Paul began the concept of clergy appreciation when he stated that the elders of the church are worthy of a double honor.

He reiterated this idea in Thessalonians 1 (5:12-13) when he stated that that those who work hard among you should be held in the highest regard for their work. This idea became Clergy Appreciation Month in 1992, established by pastors and religious workers. Eventually, Pastor Appreciation Day would form out of this month.

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY

NOVEMBER 3, 2019 When we lose a loved one, time can help but does not always diminish the sense of loss. On All Saints Sunday, November 3, we remember the saints who have passed into the church triumphant and who continue their communion into the church through Christ’s Easter morning reality. Knowing Christ, this celebrates the fullness of their new life in God’s eternal plan. We also remember our little saints who have been baptized and are made new.

On All Saints Sunday, we invite you to bring a candle(s) and candle holder(s) to church for those you are honoring. The candles will be displayed prominently in the church and lit to remember their light remains.

This time of remembrance points to the light of Christ which shines into the darkness of this world and death. This is family time. Please invite your whole family to come for this celebration.

Aging America panelists will integrate their expertise to deliver an in-depth discussion on innovative programs and new approaches to support older adults. A local panel discussion will address your questions following this prerecorded program. This program is valid for 2.5 hours of CE credit available online through Hospice Foundation of America.
