Message from Pastor Sarah

Dear People of

God at St.

Barnabas, Can we imagine?

At September’s

Ministry Night, I

began our closing

prayer with those words, and

they took away my breath.

Standing there with all those

hard working leaders, people

God has called into ministry, I

was overwhelmed by how much

imagination has gone into each

person there and into each per-

son before us who brought us to

that night. My mind raced as I

imagined how God has coordi-

nated so much for each of us,

and how much more God is cre-

ating for our futures.

This year the Stewardship Team

spent a lot of time and thought

on the stewardship campaign.

We decided to do the Pony Ex-

press means of collecting pledg-

es because that was the most

successful campaign in the past;

more people returned their

pledges through that trailbag.

And we know that next year is a

critical year for our congregation.

We won’t have the same surplus

that we’ve had this year, so our

giving has to match our expens-

es.

But even more than the financial

pressure we’ll face, the Steward-

ship Team also thought about

that we picked the right

theme for this year. It seems

like it’s the right time to start

imagining who God is calling

us to be and what God is

calling us to do so that we

can create that.

There’s no doubt this con-

gregation has created a lot

of great things. We have

strong ministry teams, and

we’ve done a lot of good in

this world. But the Steward-

ship Team agreed that it’s

time for us to be more inten-

tional about what we’re go-

ing to create. So it’s time to

imagine.

Take some time to fill out

one of those big white

clouds with what you’d like

to see happening here at St.

Barnabas. What can you

imagine for this congrega-

tion? Put it out there and

let’s see who else is imagin-

ing that. What seeds of

creation is God putting in

our hearts? Where is God

calling you to serve?

Where can you imagine

yourself doing the life-

changing work God has for

St. Barnabas to do? Can we

imagine? We already have,

and I do believe we are!

In God’s Great Peace,

Pastor Sarah

how important it is to be

good stewards of all that

God has entrusted us

with—this building, the

community of St. Barnabas,

the community of Cary and

beyond. Part of being good

stewards is how we use the

material resources God has

so generously given us, but

the other part is how we

use the time and talent God

has given us to serve in

God’s world.

This is how we came to

this year’s theme:

Can We Imagine?

Can we imagine how God is

calling us to serve in 2020?

Can we imagine what pro-

grams or small groups or

events God is calling us to

provide? Can we imagine

who God needs us to be in

this community? Can we

imagine in what ways our

community needs to hear

about or experience the life

-changing love of God? Can

we imagine beyond what

we know to what God

knows?

Lucille Clifton is an Ameri-

can poet who once said,

“We cannot create what

we can’t imagine.” I ran

across that quote the week

before our campaign start-

ed, and it solidified for me

Soup for the Soul: Learning Together in the Midst of Grief St. Barnabas, Bethany Lutheran in Crystal Lake, and Good Shepherd Hospital are offering a 4-part educational series on grief. Our second meeting will be on Sunday, November 17, from 5-7pm at St. Barnabas where we’ll eat soup together and learn from Maggie Moore, “The Widow Coach” about “Making it through the Holidays.” Maggie will talk about how to manage and own the holidays and about how to find peace and joy during a time that can be hard. There’s no cost to attend, but please RSVP by November 14 either by signing up or by calling the church office so we have enough food. We’re also looking for help to set up before and to clean up afterwards. Please invite friends and family to what is sure to be a helpful time of learning and support.
