Dear Friends,

Confession time here. I hate wearing a microphone in church and one

of the reasons is that I sometimes change the words of the hymns I am

singing. It’s not generally too bad (except at Christmas where I have to

fight the temptation to sing some of the ruder versions of the carols). In

Jerusalem, I sometimes add ‘no’ to the end of the lines “And did those

feet in ancient times walk upon England’s pastures green? NO!”. As some-

one who has never been beautiful, I once stood out for “All things mean

and ugly/ all gross and crass and grim/ and the quite disgusting/ were also

made by Him” and as a teenager I rewrote the whole hymn to prove that,

if “Morning has broken”, it was not my fault..…honestly.

The reason I am telling you this is because we are having our Harvest

festivals (please note the change of time and day from the usual pattern

for Robeston West’s) and will soon be singing “All is safely gathered in/

ere the Winter storms begin” and the truthful part of me will be wanting

to acknowledge that all has not been gathered in and the storms started

a couple of weeks ago. The truth is that farming, like they used to say of

a woman’s work, is never done and the same is true of the Harvests of all

our work, worry and love.

All the more important then to make times to celebrate what is

achieved, rest a little and then go back to it refreshed and refocussed.

Would we want to thank the Giver of Good Things if they were finished

and complete? The wonderful thing about God, as understood by Christi-

anity, is that He does not wait for us to be ready or perfect or good be-

fore he wants us, loves us and helps us.

So, do come and celebrate, because it has been an astounding year, if

not always an easy one. Don’t come because your faith or thanks or life

are perfect, come because they aren’t. But please don’t expect those who

you find there to be perfect either. At least one of your vicars may be

struggling to sing the right words!

With every blessing,

Andrew and Rhiannon

Act of Remembrance

11th November 2018 Marloes & St. Brides Community Area

The Poppy Appeal has now received about 500 completed poppies knitted and crocheted.

We are still aiming for 2000! A pattern for both is available at Marloes Village Stores

(Stephanie) – see also knitting pattern in the September PP. All contributions will be grate-

fully received. Any problems, you are welcome to call into the Beach Cafe on Tuesday

mornings – 10.30 onwards and help and advice can be provided. Knitting needles can be

loaned. If knitting/crochet is not your skill you are welcome to make a donation to the costs

of the project. Any surplus will be donated to the Royal British Legion. Later on in Octo-

ber, we will be planning the design of the memorial using the poppies.

If you live in Marloes & St. Brides, or surrounding parishes, visit the area on holiday, and

particularly if you wish to remember relatives who served in the 1st World War, as well as

the eleven of this Community who served and did not return, please help us with this pro-

ject. Completed poppies can be returned to Marloes Shop/PO/Cafe, or given to Yvonne.

Any queries to Yvonne Evans – 01646 636251.

Wanted – a treasurer for St Brides and St Peters Churches. This is a

vital job which at the moment we are unable to find a replacement for. If

we do not find a treasurer we may not be able to function as a church for

much longer.

You would be asked to attend PCC meetings and possibly some group

meetings as well as keeping the churches on the straight and narrow.

For more information please do not hesitate to contact Fr Andrew or Mr

Peter Royle.

Community Councils Community Councils Community Councils Community Councils Marloes and St BridesMarloes and St BridesMarloes and St BridesMarloes and St Brides Items under consideration at the September Business and Community meeting included the following:- Police Matters – The Police & Crime Commissioner has responded to the Coun-cil’s e-mail, and provided further information on protocols adopted in the Dyfed Powys area. The Council was pleased to note there were no problems over the August Bank holiday. Names of the Police Rural Crime Team based at Haverfordwest has been given to the Clerk. Planning Matters – Cllr Smithies and/or Kimpton were planning to attend this event at Letterston. Since the meeting the Council has received Application No. NP/18/0531/FUL – Foxdale Guest House - Change of use of 15 tent pitches to motor home pitches, with 15 tent pitches to remain. This will be considered at the October meeting. Financial Matters - The second precept of £942 has been received. Clock Tower – Painting contract to start as soon as the weather improves. Rubbish/Dog Fouling – Few rubbish prob-lems in the village, but some experienced at the Marloes Sands car park. The Community Council has trialled new anti-dog fouling posters, but need specific ones now to advise of the new procedures. See separate item on the “District Enforcement” contract. Community Meeting – Attended by 20 residents plus Councillors and the Clerk. The following is a summary of the meeting. Beacon Field The Community Council is not prepared to purchase/manage the Beacon Field on the community’s behalf, and this is in line with local opinion. No residents wished to form a community group with the intention of purchasing/managing the Beacon Field. Some interest was expressed about the possibility of the Beacon Field being used as a burial ground, but that was as far as it went. Re-

gardless of ownership the general consensus is that, in the medium term, the access to the trig point should be improved. If a third party would buy the Beacon Field, the National Trust would be interested in permanently leasing it for a peppercorn rent – on the proviso that they were gifted a lump sum which would cover its upkeep. An anony-mous individual with long-term connections to the village is interested in buying the Beacon Field and maintaining the land pretty much as it is, with village bonfires permitted to mark special events plus wild flowers encouraged. Enhancing Pembrokeshire Grant – Mr. Mark Burton who has attended County Council information meetings outlined the procedures to be adopted, and answered questions. Groups within the Community area to be encouraged to apply for funding. Mr. Burton offered help with application forms. Cllr. Beal advised that Coastlands School is interested in applying, and would welcome his assistance. Noted that some matters like dog fouling are being pursued by the Community Council. Some interest was expressed in provision of additional burial areas. However a group would need to be formed to pursue this idea, and land purchase would not fit the criteria for the Grant. The Community Council would welcome further ideas for grant applications, but these can be pursued by local organisations independently of the Council. Further information, and County Council contact details can be pro-vided as necessary. The Community Council is supporting a proposal by the Peninsula Papers Management Committee to purchase a new printer. A portion of Grant would be taken from all the Community Councils areas covered by the Newsletter. Electoral Registration – Reminder that forms need to be returned as soon as possi-ble - Contact via www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/elections-and-

God, King and Country Update- The research Project has started As regular readers will know, the Heritage Lottery Fund have given a generous grant to help us restore a work of art in Walwyn’s Castle Church (God), do some schools work and research how farming in this area has changed since the First World War (King and Country). You don’t have to have any connection with church, or want to have, to get involved with the research project. This is a community thing. We are asking the questions- How has farming in this area changed since World War One? How have these changes shaped our community? Initial research suggests nationwide there are three big ‘stories’

Farming has become more mechanised. This has meant that fewer people are need-ed to work on the farms and that has meant the size and age of our community has changed.

Land ownership has changed. Once most of Britain was owned by the big estates and worked by tenants. Now most people work their own farms.

What is farmed has changed. Previously most farms were mixed, now they tend to specialise.

If you would like to get involved here are some questions you might like to research to get you started- Are these stories true for the farms you know? When did the changes happen? Can you find out who lived there in 1918? Who has lived there since? Who lives there now? Are there any pictures or stories of new machinery? Who has owned the land over the last century? Was it ever a tenant farm? If so, when did it stop being one? What was farmed there in 1918, over the intervening years and now? Does your family have any stories and/or artifacts that might be of interest to the project? There are going to be six-weekly check in sessions at the Village Hall in Walwyn’s Castle when people can share what they are doing and, in the intervening time anything can be emailed to Rhiannon- [email protected] or dropped off with the Boyles at the Silverhill kennels. The next few dates are 22nd October, 3rd December and 14th January, all at 7.30pm It would help us if you emailed or contacted Rhiannon to say that you are getting in-volved and also logged the amount of time you spend on it because our sponsors will want to see evidence of how much time we gave. The research gathering part of the project will end on Easter Day next year. The aim is to present our findings at a Grand Jamboree on 5th July 2019, one hundred years after the “Day of National Rejoicing” to celebrate the signing of the peace treaty.

MOTHERS’ UNION

We had a very successful launch to our new programme. We have plans in hand to try and help all of you who are in contact with the public to see if we can find away to allow our communities to become Dementia Friendly - not all at once but share ideas and thoughts as to how best we may achieve this.

In October we move on to learn more about The Samaritans. Leo is coming to widen our knowledge as to the what's, how's and whys of the Samaritan movement which should make for a stimulating evening. The talk is on Tuesday 9th October at 7.30 in Marloes Village Hall. We hope the knitters out here are all busy creating their angels - if not why not, patterns are still available!

Mothers’ Union is a non-denominational group and welcomes all, and despite the name you do not have to be a mother! If you feel like popping in to see how we operate please do. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month in Marloes Village Hall at 7.30pm...Look forward to seeing you there!

For any more information contact Harriet 636668, or Bridget 636274.

District Enforcement Contract

Residents are advised that the County Council has given a contract to “District Enforce-ment” to undertake environmental enforcement in the County. All costs to be covered by the fine system - £150 to start reducing to £75. The offences include:- Dog Fouling – failing to pick up after the dog you are walking or not disposing of the dog waste in the correct way. Saying that you didn’t see the dog fouling or that you forgot your bags is not a valid excuse. Littering – dropping or throwing any kind of litter. For example dropping chewing gum, fast food, fast food packaging and sweet wrappers is littering as is throwing a cigarette end on the ground or down the drain. The throwing of litter out of a car is also an offence. Your car registration details will be taken and the driver of the car at the time of the incident will be held liable. If you drop litter it’s a crime. Graffiti and fly posting – Graffiti is any writing or drawings scratched, scribbled, sprayed or painted illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public space, whilst fly posting is the putting up of advertising posters in unauthorised places. Anti-social behaviour – acting in a manner that has caused or is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to one or more people. Local residents please be warned. Holiday Lets/Agencies should bring these new enforce-ment arrangements to the attention of visitors.

St. Ishmaels Forum

For several years now residents and representatives of local organisations have attended

meetings in such poor numbers that the decision has been made by the committee to dis-

band the forum. Other local forums have no funds of their own but ours did. For years

Colin Green tidied the recycling centre at the entrance to the Sports Club and for this the

council paid him. Colin generously donated all this money to the Forum and the committee

decided it should be spent for the good of the village. Their decision is detailed below.

To replace the broken slide at the play area and towards providing a swing for slightly

older children. £1000

To buy the 3 planters to go under the village signs and to provide compost for them

£525.60

6 bottles of wine for Colin in recognition of his generous donation £36

To the Motor Neurone Disease Society as St Ishmaels Nursery would take no payment for

filling our planters every year and this is their charity of the year. £300

To St. Ishmaels defibrillator fund £374. 93.

The account is now empty and has been closed. The Forum is disbanded.

Tawny Owl calling survey

The BTO (British Trust for Ornithology)

are organising a Tawny Owl survey this

winter which involves listening in your

garden (or indoors with the window open!)

for 20 minutes each week and recording

whether or not you hear a Tawny Owl.

There are undoubtedly Tawny Owls in our

area, definitely in Dale and probably in

Monkhaven and very likely elsewhere (they

do not need many trees) so it would be

interesting to track them down.

If you are

interested,

type “BTO

RETIRED

“Stop all the clocks!” We, now, agree with what that fellow wrote, many those years ago, But for a different reason: Yes, let's stop all the clocks! And, henceforth, if we need hours, a straightish tree trunk

Can cast us the sun’s shadow with accuracy enough.

Meanwhile, should we have grudging need of minutes, Our measure of them could be salty sea-kisses, taken lazily. As for the need to gauge a silly second –

Perish the thought! Instead of such fiddly moment-fractions, so happy we will be

With the slower come and go of waves.

There: that's time sensibly dealt with, The days divided accurately enough! And as for the days themselves – they don't really matter any more, Regarding the giving them names; For what's in a weekend now, except to know

When to put out the milkman’s money?

Now, you see, weeks don't matter half as much

As fortnights – and I talk, of course, of the celestial sort. For they are the dividers of spring and neap tides; Similarly, what our new calendars need know

Are the old hunters’ moon-months, Which have the generous dictate of our night-time walking@

@ And which eventuate our ever-frenzied sun-chase of Planting, thinning, harvesting, storing, pruning, and planning –

About which clocks, with their mechanical ignorance, Have no understanding; Thus, with their banishment, we have nothing lost Except anxiety.

COASTLANDS HISTORY GROUP The September talk was given by Rev. Richard Davies on the subject of Commemorative China from the time of World War 1. Like most other children in Pembrokeshire, Richard had been given a mug as memento of the Investiture of Prince Charles in 1969. This began a lifelong “passion” for collecting similar pieces. He has specialised in all sorts of ceramic memorabilia to do with WW1 and now has a huge collection. His presentation showed the pieces in chronological order and included mementoes of the battle of the Somme (a ceramic tank commemorating the first intro-duction of the tank as a fighting weapon) and, finally, mugs celebrating the signing of the Peace Treaty in 1919. As well as giving a clear account of the progress of the war, Rich-ard pointed out the artwork on many of the pieces which was also extremely interesting . We keep the theme of WW1 for the next 2 months. In October Simon Hancock will be coming to talk on “Pembrokeshire and WW1 at Sea” in Dale. He is very keen to see items of WW1 memorabilia, artefacts, and personal items such as letters, diaries etc. If you have any please bring them along as he would like to take copies of them for the records. Simon is part of The Haverfordwest Museum. In November the WW1 theme is brought to a conclusion with a reflection of WW1 to mark the centenary of the end of the conflict. Along with other groups on the peninsula, and the school, we are putting on 2 evenings of song, word and deed under the guidance of Mike Cottam in The Coronation Hall. A ‘keep the date’ notice is also in this issue! The exhibition in The Old Stables Heritage Centre, as mentioned else where in thus issue, shows items relevant to WW1 as it affected our area. In this way we hope the History Group can be seen to have marked this era of our local and national history. For more details please contact Yvonne (636251), Margaret (636295) or Harriet (636668).

Dale WI

Last week, WI members and friends attended a cookery demonstration by Ann Ellis at the home of the WI President, Mary Lewis. This followed on from one held last Autumn. As before, Ann had brought along leaflets with a number of recipes for a starter – 10min Toma-to soup, followed by a salad of Creamy potatoes with Salmon and Prawns, a hot dish Lemony Chicken and a dessert - Limencello Trifle. All delicious! Demonstrations of how to make these these dishes followed. For those who required a more healthy version of the dishes, Ann made suggestions but did feel once in a while a bit of ‘naughty but nice’ was good for you. Many of the ladies felt they would be using the recipes for their friends and family. A prolonged tasting then session then followed! Thanks were given to Ann for her demonstra-tion, and to Mary for the use of her home.

October will start with the usual Business/social meeting at the Jubilee Suite, Dale Hall on Tuesday 2nd October – anyone interested in finding out what the WI is about is very wel-come to attend. Members why not invite a friend/neighbour to come along? On the 16th October, Cherry Langton of “In House Interiors” based at Milford Marina will be leading a workshop on various crafts - no previous experience required.

Interested in attending a meeting? – contact Ann Barkworth (01646 636873), or Yvonne Evans (01646 636251), or turn up on a meeting night. We have members travelling from Marloes, St. Brides and St. Ishmaels so transport can be arranged if required.

Recycling plastic bottles

Do you leave the tops on or not??

I was confused about this as in many cases the tops are made of a different plastic from the bottle, and in all the pictures of bottles for recycling on the Pembs Council website and indeed on the bin bags show the bottles with tops removed. However, Which? Magazine a few months recommended that plastic bottles should be rinsed, squashed and the tops put back on. So I contacted the council and they confirmed that indeed tops should be left on.

As a footnote, the same Which? Article mentioned that Wales has the second best recycling rate out of all the countries in the world!

To Black Magic and Twinkle my greetings I send,

I join you in saying my thanks

To the new mum and dad who have taken me in

And accepted my cardigan pranks.

I don’t catch mice and voles and such

And leave them there on the mat

For the kind lady to find and reject,

I couldn’t see me doing that.

I can see me pursuing the cats,

Enjoying the fun of the chase,

But mum really would not be amused

And I’d be in doggy disgrace.

So let us shake paws and say we’ll be friends,

Forget the old growling and hiss,

And not do what instinct suggests that we do,

But give the aggression a miss.

TIDAL ARCHAEOLOGY

On Tuesday 11th September Louise Barker and Patrick Robson of the RCAHMW Aber-ystwyth CHERISH project visited Marloes for more field investigations: the spring tide range offered exceptional beach access. Derek Lister, Hywel John, and Chris Jessop volunteered as pathfinders and equipment porters.

After conducting a preliminary survey of the watermill remains at the foot of Sandy Lane, Marloes Sands, the archaeologists headed for Albion Sands, there to set up a GPS base station. Then, using a mobile locator, they 3-D surveyed the positions and forms of the visible wreck remains to 1 cm accuracy: very impressive! They also took numer-ous digital photographs, surrounding each item with coded position markers: combining all the gathered information back in Aberystwyth, they explained, would create them a virtual model of the shipwreck. Also, they will send us a gridded plan of Albion Sands to help us record the location of the paddlesteamer remains which only reveal themselves when the site is storm-scoured free of sand.

Before leaving, Louise and Patrick kindly donated two red/white surveying poles to the History Group; perfect for when we are photographing new local finds such as ships’ timbers. Not a bad swap for two Marloes-grown Bardsey Island apples!

Some time in 2019 RCAHMW hope to come down and give us a CHERISH project progress report; meanwhile, you can download their latest news from “Resources” at www.cherishproject.eu/en/.

ST. ISHMAELS SPORTS CLUB

Last and Final Notice: On Saturday 15th of September there was a football match played against Merlin’s Bridge. Before the match could start, the linesman, Mr. Robert Thom-as had to clean up the pitch. Dog-owners had allowed their animals to foul the pitch and not cleaned it up themselves. In the June issue of Peninsula Pa-

pers, The Sports Club issued a polite notice to all concerned about the extent of dog-fouling on and around the car park and field. If the fouling continues, we intend to put a fence up between the field and the coast path and ban the use of the car park for anyone not attending a sports event or using the club. This would be unfortunate for both children and adults who use the field for informal sports. We at the Sports Club support The Community Council who have the same problem with dog-fouling in the village. Please help us by reporting anyone you see who does not clean up after their dog. You have been warned.

Cricket On Saturday September 1st, the cricket section held a very well attended end of season barbecue. We would like to thank Mrs. Wendy Bradshaw for organ-ising it and Mrs. Debbie Cheshire for providing the barbecue.

Darts

We would like to thank Mr. Malcolm Hawkins for organising the very well at-tended Pembrokeshire Darts Tournament.

The Sports Club would also like to thank Mr. Roy Cheshire and Mr. Kenny Thomas for repairing the gang-mowers. Further repairs are to be carried out when the tractor and mowers are housed in the pavilion.

Up-Coming Events: Saturday October 27th: Halloween Disco, entry £5.00, see posters for details. Wednesday October 31st: Kiddies Halloween Party, to be held in the lounge, early evening. Saturday November 3rd: Fireworks on the Sports Club Field. No bonfire, plenty of hotdogs; commencing 6.30pm. Saturday December 1st: Christmas bingo, starts at 8.00pm. Any dona-tions for the raffle gratefully accepted. Saturday December 8th: Christmas Quiz and Curry Night. 8.00pm start, Quiz Master, Mrs. Marlene Cheshire. Saturday December 15th: Carol singing with Mr. Malcolm Smith-Gosling at the organ starting at 8.00pm. Saturday December 22nd: Christmas Party with the Glynn Thomas Dis-co. Also drawing of The Grand Raffle. Sunday December 23rd: Kiddies Christmas Party, with entertainment, 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Monday 31st December: New Year’s Eve Entertainment. To be arranged, watch out for the posters.

The quest for the Convolvulus HawkThe quest for the Convolvulus HawkThe quest for the Convolvulus HawkThe quest for the Convolvulus Hawk----mothmothmothmoth

The Convolvulus Hawkmoth has an almost mythical status amongst moth enthusiasts. I started “mothing” in 2011 and by 2017 I had not seen one. Plenty of other people had – Mark Burton had caught a couple in his trap in Marloes, a friend of a friend had seen one on a fence post, then in 2016 a total of 9 were reported on Skokholm. I was defi-nitely miffed.

These apparent random sightings are due to the fact the Convolvulus Hawkmoth is a migrant and tends to turn up on southerly winds in the autumn. It can appear anywhere – in fact this article was triggered by the fact that Chris Jessop had just found one on a telegraph pole opposite his house in Marloes. They are often found during the day perched on vertical surfaces, favourites being posts, poles, rocks and washing. This latter became something of a feature – it was reckoned that the moths were attracted the scent of fabric conditioners on the washing. No good to me as I use an unscented one!

So how do you recognise a Convolvulus Hawkmoth when you see it? Easy really – they are huge. The largest moth you are likely to see in the UK* though not particularly well pat-terned, being a greyish brown with darker streaks. The picture above is pretty well life size. They have a wingspan of about 110 mm (4½ inches) and when they spread their wings you can see their pink and black striped bodies as in the picture below.

There are several techniques for trying to attract Convolvulus Hawkmoths to your garden. Apart from the “scented washing” mentioned above, they are attracted by strongly scented, white, tubular flowers especially nicotiana – they are one of the few moths with a proboscis long enough to reach the nectar in these flowers. So all over the UK moth-lovers plant nicotiana each year, including me, in the hope of attracting one of these beasts. It presumably works as

you do see reports of Convolvulus Hawkmoths seen nectaring at nicotiana at dusk – it must be a fantastic sight as these moths are bigger than many hummingbirds.

On 23rd August 2017 I eventually managed to attract one to my trap. It was a rather tatty individual but at least I had now seen one. Well, I don’t know what I did right this year but on the night of 1st September I found I had attracted no fewer than FOUR Convolvulus Hawkmoths to my moth trap by the back door. Only one was in the trap, the other three were on the wall and on the sheet over the table as you might expect. They were all in good condition. I was very chuffed, and as far as I know I am the only person in the UK this year to have recorded so many at one time. And, by the way, they were a long way from the nicotiana!
