Art Show for October Beth BurnsideANIMAL FORM AND PATTERNThis exhibit celebrates the beauty of animal form and pattern and the warm appreciation of that beauty shown over the centuries by naturalists, scientists, and artists. During the Enlightenment, a growing realization of the extraordinary diversity and beauty of plant and animal form produced an irresistible delight that crept into artists’ efforts to depict newly discovered species for scientific purposes. Some works in this exhibit draw from a few of the many beautifully illustrated compendia of images of animals published between 1750 and 1850. Others contain actual animal forms, and another was inspired the refraction of early morning sunlight off the silk of a spider web. Beth Burnside was a cell biologist faculty member and administrator at Berkeley until her retirement in 2009. Since then she has been pleased to be free to pursue her long neglected interest in Art. As a cell biologist she used light and electron microscopy to study the mechanism of cell shape change in the retina. This resonance with biological form and pattern has continued in her work with collage and assemblage. The works in this exhibit explore the delight of Enlightenment artists in the beauty of their animal subjects.
