President’s Message – Larry Sassen, President

Hickory Ridge Highlands

Visiting with our NCHCA members of this year, I have heard the gambit of weathers stories, from a great warm dry spring with early planting to some who struggled with cold and wetconditions causing weeks of delays. Harvesting crops from hay to grains followed a coursecaused by low growing degree days, dry and or wet conditions causing delayed harvests. My hope is that everyone got all the feed stock needed for their fold for this comingfeeding season despite the weather.

On the bright side NCHCA could not have asked for a better start to our summer activitiesthan our Production Sale in June which was a greatly appreciated success. Great activitiesdid not end there as it was followed by Wisconsin Farm Technology days, county fairs, statefairs, World Beef Expo, Scottish Fairs and with our Show in Austin where members enjoyedtheir own successes.

A group of our members recently had an enjoyable Saturday working through a rainymorning into a cool still cloudy afternoon helping a fellow member get ready for winter byfences, cleaning the feeding and sharing a meal.

As your president I will be missing two of my most dependable hard working, long timeoffice holders that have asked to have replacements found. Billy Johnston and Jan Larsonhave served the NCHCA in many ways and need to reduce the load they carry for us,allowing them help in other activities coming up for the NCHCA.

Thank you, Jan and Billy, may fair skies and following winds be with you.

NCHCA SeeksTreasurerIt is with great regret that the NCHCAboard has accepted the resignationof our Treasurer Billy Johnston whowill be stepping down February 4,2018 at our Annual Meeting in EauClaire, Wis. We would like to takethis opportunity to thank him for allhis hard work the past several yearsas our NCHCA Treasurer. Billy hasdone a wonderful job keeping ourbooks in order, and guiding our boardand members through many financialdiscussions and decisions. He hashelped out so many members andhas always been willing to jump inwith a helping hand whenever he hasbeen asked. His experience, diligence, dedication and enthusiasmhave been invaluable to ourassociation and we wish him well, but we still expect to see him at allour future functions.

This however, opens up a newopportunity for one of our members. The NCHCA is now looking for amember to fill our Treasurer position. If you are experienced, and/or willingto learn, and would like to becomemore involved in our association, wehave just the spot for you. Contactany member of the NCHCA Board(their names, numbers, and emailsare listed on the front page of theHoofbeat) or the NCHCA Secretaryand let us know.

This AHCA Directors report is hot off the press, since thequarterly board of directors meeting was just held lastnight. The Highland Beef Marketing committee has beenworking hard on a few things. I hope you all saw that theychanged one of the requirements for the Quality HighlandBeef (QHB) program. They used to have a requirement thatthe carcass hung for a minimum 14 days. Those of us thatuse smaller processors are often lucky to get 10 days, so wecouldn’t meet those requirements. They changed this to 10days at the previous meeting, and I believe everything hasbeen updated to reflect this change. If you haven’t checkedout the program recently, check out the QHB link on theAHCA webpage highlandcattleusa.org . The marketingcommittee is also working on developing some materialsthat can be individualized for your farm to use whenpromoting your beef. Look for something to come out overthis winter.

The show committee has been working hard to clean upsome lose ends, like becoming member of the IAFE(International Association of Fairs and Expositions) so thatwe can legally use their rules to guide how our shows arerun. We have been referring to them, but we recentlybecame aware that to do so we needed to be members ofthe organization. The committee is also working on the 2018ROE (Roll of Excellence) rules and coming up with a plan tonotify show managers of the changes for the upcoming year.Last year some changes were made but many people didsee the changes until someone alerted them to the fact at

the show. The committee will be working on puttingtogether a survey to send out to the membership later nextyear to gather people’s opinions on how animals arepresented at shows. The outcome of this survey is yet to bedetermined. Overall, a small percentage of our membershipshows their cattle, but shows are one of the biggest avenuesin many areas for promoting the breed and they benefit allhighland owners by making others aware of the breed andtheir attributes. If you haven’t been to a show yourself, Ihighly recommend that you attend one. It is a great place totalk with other breeders and see animals.

The Bagpipe has a new Associate Director. She is going tobe focusing on educational articles. Regional news will nolonger be a section that is included in the publication. Butthey gladly accept submissions from members. If you havean idea to share feel free to write a short article about itand send it in.

There are now “Sovereign Steers” that can be registered. In the past you could register a crossbred steer or heifer, but it was not considered a Sovereign. There is a“Sovereign Registry” link on the AHCA site if you wantmore information on this topic.

The next meeting is in Denver at the national show. If youhave any questions or concerns about anything that youwould like me to bring forward, please let me know. Youcan always call me at 507-481-7368 or email [email protected].

The 2018 NCHCA Calendar is available to order!Support our Association by purchasingcalendars. Another great job of putting togetherfine examples of the breed and featuringmember farms. These make great gifts!

*Start getting your photos ready for the 2019 calendar.

Why Do We Raise Highland Cattle• Because they are pretty? • Because they can thrive where other cattle cannot?

• Because they do not need antibiotics to stay healthy?

• Because they produce lean, tasty beef?

Perhaps, all of the above.

There is more than one reason to raise Highland cattle. We all have our reasons. However, they are still beef cattle. Eventhough it is said they will thrive where most cattle will not, when we put up fences to keep them in, we have aresponsibility to make sure they have adequate nutrition, whether they are calves, heifers or lactating cows. All ageshave different needs.

Most health problems can be prevented with proper nutrition, keeping things clean and preventing exposure tocontagious diseases. Keep a close watch all year. Every season may stress cattle in different ways. Pest control and heatstress in the summer. They are winter hardy, cold does not seem to bother them but they still need a place to get out ofthe wind. A cow needs extra roughage to keep warm in winter or body fat will be depleted to create energy to keepwarm. More grass hay keeps her warm; digestion and breakdown of cellulose create heat energy. If a cow is cold she willdo better if given all the roughage she can eat and a little alfalfa or protein supplement. The colder it is, the more grasshay she will eat. The bull may need more attention in the winter so he is in good physical condition for the breedingseason .

The Highland cow has an adequate coat of winter hair. They will do well in cold temperatures. But they do need moreenergy as the temperature drops. More energy to keep warm during cold weather, increase the feed 1% for each degreeof temperature drop below 20 degrees. For instance, if the temperature drops below zero the requirements increaseabout 20%.

Healthy cattle are bright and alert, have a good appetite and graze along with the rest. Observe your cattle daily. Go outand walk amongst them so they get use to you. They will be easier to handle when you want to move them from oneplace to another. They think of you as one of the herd. Cattle have a pecking order. Let them know that you are the boss.

Learn more about Highland Cattle Nutrition at the NCHCA Annual Meeting on February 3 and 4. Dr. Anne Proctor,Highland enthusiast and animal nutritionist will be discussing more in-depth about the nutritional needs of HighlandCattle.

Happy Highlanding

North Central Highland Cattle Junior AssociationThe North Central Juniors had a very successful weekend at the NCHCA2017 Regional Show in Austin Minnesota. The junior show attracted 14juniors, who exhibited a total of 14 heifers, one sovereign heifer, and sixmarket heifers. This year’s Junior of the Year Award was presented toBrandon Volstad, who was nominated by Heather Bailey. In addition tothe Junior Show, many juniors took part in activities on Friday night, showed animals in the open show, and had fun dressing up in theannual costume class, which is always a crowd favorite! Following theconclusion of the show on Saturday, we held elections for officers forthe 2017-2018 year. Our elected officers are Paige Proctor as president,Maryn Cowell as vice president, Courtney Hudson as secretary, andBrandon Volstad as treasurer. We also have many outstanding juniorswho have volunteered to be reporters, and will be writing articles and submitting updates throughout the upcomingyear. These juniors include Maryn, Courtney, Brooklyn, and Taylor, however all juniors are encouraged to submitphotos, stories, and updates. We would love to see what you are up to with your highlands!
