Deur die Voorsitter se Bril

At the Bonnets Up on 29 October I had a chat with a fellow club member and we both agreed that we don’t know what happened to 2017 but that its less than 60 days to Christmas and we are already planning our life for 2018. I for one, like to think back and “relive” highlights of the past. Standing at the Clubhouse between the old cars naturally brings highlights of the club back to mind first. The lunch at Hokaai will for, sure be one to stand out for long and everybody that was not there definitely missed out on a superb outing. I was fortunate to sit with a founding club member, Jack Boshoff, as well as Oom Charles van Zylat the same table. Listening to Jack and Oom Charles chatting about stories of trips they had in the early nineties was mouth-watering. Peter Boshoff sometimes had to correct some detail but there was even a story about a puppy bought in Prince Albert on a “car hunting” trip. If I am not mistaken, the Dachshund is still alive although very old. There were four founding club family members present and it surely was a picture to remember seeing them pose for a photograph. Van Rooyen, Vermeulen, Boshoff and Fick. Oom Charles van Zyl was also present and although not a founding member surely someone that also has done his part to keep the club going from very early on. I did not count but I am of the opinion that apart from the Motor show it was the club outing with the most “past chairmen” I have ever attended. A big thanks to everybody that attended and also organised to make it one of my most outstanding 2017 events. My other outstanding memory of a club event this year is the Bonnets up where Philip Kuschke taught me how to drive a Model T Ford. His first memory of driving a Model T is when he learned to drive a car and it was reversing his father’s Model T down the driveway

to the road and then forward up to the garage door. This, he said continued for hours at the time. No wonder he has such a passion for old cars. The yearly outing to Kobus Halliday is just around the corner and also one of my favourite outings. Please remember to buy your tickets for the year end function and I hope to see you all there, especially at the AGM. Safe Motoring

A word from the Editor

Our club’s Annual General Meeting takes place on 2nd December 2017 at the King George Protea Hotel. This is the most important meeting of the year. Please do make an effort to attend. The committee has some important issues that need to be addressed as well as a new committee that needs to be elected. Attendance is generally poor at the meeting, but a sincere request is made for members to attend. If there are any issues that you may feel needs

to be addressed, please contact the secretary, Maritz Stander so that it can be included in the agenda. A formal electronic notice will be posted shortly. The 2018 George Old Car Show is fast approaching, and the coordinator, Pierre Conradie is looking for people that are prepared to assist. Please contact him if you are prepared to help. Kaartjies vir die jaareindfunksie is by komiteelede beskikbaar teen R150 per persoon.

Important Notice / Belangrik

The committee has negotiated with Glenwood school for club members to park OLD CARS only (i.e. cars up to 1975) close to the clubhouse during club events. We kindly request that people do not drive over the sports fields. Please drive around the outer edge of the sports fields. During wet conditions we may also not drive to the clubhouse due to the damage it causes to the grassed areas. We appeal to all to please adhere to this request.

SONDAGMIDDAGETE BY HOKAAI

The 8th of October 2017 turned out to be quite a special day for our club. For the first time in many years we have managed to have almost all our club’s founder members together as well as our Club Patron.

Page 12: OCTOBER 2017 Newsletter - scocc.co.za Oct 2017.pdf · Clay Whittal 02 Gordon Fraser 17 Ann Glaine Boyce Terblanche 03 Wolsley Jacobson 17 Gerhard Prinsloo 04 Chris Langeveld 17 Bentjie

Outside the restaurant was a superb collection of vintage cars, which drew quite a lot of attention of the motorists passing on the busy N2. Inside however, we were kuiering lekker. It was really a privilege to have our club Patron, Oom Charles van Zyl present as well as Jack Boshoff, Leo Fick (wife of the late Paul Fick), Roelf and Wenda Vermeulen and Japie and Marianna van Rooyen, all Founder Members of our club who graced us with their presence.

Page 13: OCTOBER 2017 Newsletter - scocc.co.za Oct 2017.pdf · Clay Whittal 02 Gordon Fraser 17 Ann Glaine Boyce Terblanche 03 Wolsley Jacobson 17 Gerhard Prinsloo 04 Chris Langeveld 17 Bentjie

On the morning of day two we departed after breakfast to ADDO. Due to protest action near Motherwell where the planned route took us, the traffic department of Uitenhage advised us to drive a detour of about 40 to avoid the area. We had a lovely braai with hotdogs etc. at the Addo National Elephant Park. After the braai we returned to the town of ADDO where we stayed over for the night. We arrived there quite early and all participants gathered in and around the pub before we were treated with a great meal including kudu steaks and lamb chops prepared over the fire. After breakfast, day three took us to Graaff Reinet. We travelled via Kirkwood and after stopping for tea at the Kleinpoort Pompstal we continued via Jansenville to Graaff Reinet. We were once again pleasantly surprised by the spread at the tea stop. During the late afternoon there was a steady stream of local visitors that came to look at the cars. We were even given an aerial greet by a local pilot who flew over the resort and did some tricks and waved his plane’s wings before going to land again.

Page 14: OCTOBER 2017 Newsletter - scocc.co.za Oct 2017.pdf · Clay Whittal 02 Gordon Fraser 17 Ann Glaine Boyce Terblanche 03 Wolsley Jacobson 17 Gerhard Prinsloo 04 Chris Langeveld 17 Bentjie

After breakfast there were some goodbyes already, even though the route still continued back to George via De Rust, where we were treated by the local NG Church ladies with something to eat before tackling the last stretch back to George. Another pleasant surprise awaited us at the Junction of the road to George and Uniondale, where Philip Kuschke waited for us in his newly restored 1923 Model T Ford to tackle that last stretch over the Outeniqua Pass with some of the other tour cars to complete the tour of 1100 km. Thanks to the organisers for a wonderful tour. We hope to see each other again next year.

Important Clubhouse Notice

Please note that the conditions of the liquor licence for the bar at the clubhouse prohibits anyone to bring any alcohol onto the premises. The bar is open during all events and the prices are very reasonable. Please support the bar as these funds go straight back into the club. We kindly request that all please comply with this request, as non-compliance may put the liquor licence in jeopardy .

THE DATE IS SET…

VINTAGE, CLASSIC & SPORTS CAR AUCTION

GEORGE OLD CAR SHOW

The 22nd George Old Car Show is set to be held over the weekend of 10/11 February, 2018. Initiated by the Southern Cape Old Car Club, this event continues to be hosted by the club on an annual basis. Since February this year, committee members and volunteers have been

hard at work - planning, arranging and organising the many facets

Page 19: OCTOBER 2017 Newsletter - scocc.co.za Oct 2017.pdf · Clay Whittal 02 Gordon Fraser 17 Ann Glaine Boyce Terblanche 03 Wolsley Jacobson 17 Gerhard Prinsloo 04 Chris Langeveld 17 Bentjie

that have to be in place to ensure a successful and enjoyable show. Countless hours have been spent and countless hours are yet to come as preparations are made for this, George’s biggest annual event, attracting approximately 12 000 people locally and internationally. An event of this magnitude does not happen by accident. Every detail has to be meticulously covered to ensure that more than 800 cars, trucks, tractors, and motorcycles are displayed and exhibited to their best advantage. In addition, there are stationery motors and model cars (Dinkie, Corgi, Matchbox, etc.) which attract their own group of interested spectators. Stallholders display and sell a wide variety of goods and, of course, no show is complete without food vendors and refreshment stalls. This is by no means a static show, however, as opportunity is provided for vehicle owners to parade and show-off their treasured vehicles which are grouped into various makes or years. At designated times, owners are invited to drive their cars into the arena to give a short description and background on the vehicle. A well-versed and knowledgeable commentator is on hand to assist and ask questions where necessary. One of the highlights of the show is the auction of vintage, classic and sports cars which, for the 6th year running, will be hosted by House of Classic & Sports Cars in Knysna who specialise in buying and selling vintage, classic and sports cars. The auction will be held at 1.00 p.m. on Saturday, 10 February and lasts about an hour. From 9.00 a.m. on the Saturday, vehicles submitted for auction are exhibited in a demarcated area in close proximity to the registration tent. House of Classic & Sports Cars staff are available to assist potential buyers and to answer any questions. Anyone wishing to bid must register between 9.00 a.m.

Page 20: OCTOBER 2017 Newsletter - scocc.co.za Oct 2017.pdf · Clay Whittal 02 Gordon Fraser 17 Ann Glaine Boyce Terblanche 03 Wolsley Jacobson 17 Gerhard Prinsloo 04 Chris Langeveld 17 Bentjie

and 12.45 p.m. in the Registration Tent as a strict “No registration, no bidding” rule applies. A refundable deposit of R3 000.00 (Three Thousand Rand) is payable upon registration. This entails a credit card being swiped and the docket retained. If no purchase is made, the docket is handed back to Bidder. No cash deposits are accepted. House of Classic & Sports Cars assists charitable organisations by giving the Auctioneer’s full commission (bidder’s premium) of 6% to the Southern Cape Old Car Club who, in turn, donates this to a charity or charities of their choice. Entries for the auction are now open and sellers are encouraged to

contact House of Classic & Sports Cars directly for further information. Only vehicles in good, running condition will be accepted and, to increase the chance of a sale, sellers are urged to specify realistic prices. Buyers are slowly coming to realise that these sales are not “bargain basements”, but as

the vehicles are on auction, they do expect to pay competitive prices. House of Classic & Sports Cars staff can guide sellers on what may be realistically achieved. For more information on the auction, contact House of Classic & Sports Cars on 044-382 1000 / 081 325 1507 / 082 566 7897.

SAVVA Technical Tip 124

Priming carburettors Priming carbs after a car has been standing for some time has always been a problem. A solution often used is to fit an electric fuel pump to prime the system. However, on very early cars this can be difficult especially if they have a six volt system or an early carb with a needle and seat of dubious quality. A solution has been forwarded by Ian Otridge – it’s so simple. To quote Ian: “I got around the problem of priming the carb on my 1929 Chev by fitting a rubber bulb, the same as fitted to outboard motors. I fitted it between the tank and fuel pump. I now just squeeze it until it gets firm and the car starts at the first turn. It was cheap, simple to install and easy to hide, and works like a dream.” Many thanks Ian. For those of you who haven’t owned outboard motors - You have a petrol tank which stands somewhere in the boat and is connected to the engine with a length of flexible rubber hose. To prime the system there is a “squeezy” rubber bulb in the line. One simply squeezes the bulb which sucks petrol from the tank and in turn pushes it into the carb. When the carb is full the bulb becomes firm. Basically, it is a rubber bulb with a non-return valve much the same as fitted to a mechanical fuel pump. It does the same job but without having to crank the engine.
