Secondary Application Online

Calling all Year 6 Parents and Carers your will be going to secondary school in September 2016, if you haven't done so already you will need to complete a Local Authority application online before the 31st October 2015. www.oldham.gov.uk/info/200327/admissions/1137/apply_for_a_secondary_school_place

You will receive an email before 12 noon on 1 March 2016 to advise you of the school that your child has been allocated a place at. Please take a look at our website http://www.stannesroyton.oldham.sch.uk/ . It includes all our statutory

information; including curriculum info and topics. You can also find newsletters, useful forms, information about St Anne’s Care Club, our church and we even have a Twitter feed.

Please ensure dinner money is paid in full each Monday. Dinners must be paid for in advance of them being taken. Thank you.

Fire registers Please ensure that all children are here at 8.55am, ready to enter school on time each morning. Doors close at 9am promptly. Late attendance not only disrupts the start of the morning session but can also be quite distressing to a child that has to enter class or an assembly late. If your child is late please bring him/her to the to the school office so they can be recorded on the fire register, this is a safeguarding measure to ensure all children are accounted for in the event of an emergency. Thank you.

School holidays We have had a few queries in regards to our holiday dates. Some of our parents have been looking on various different websites and so therefore have the wrong holiday dates for St Anne’s. Please only use our website http://www.stannesroyton.oldham.sch.uk/ or information provided directly from school (such as the back of each newsletter, or lists that are sent by Parentmail) for our holiday dates. If you would like a full list of the holidays please see the office.

School dinners All children from Reception to Year 2 are still entitled to a free school meal under the Government scheme. Children from Yr3 to Yr6 not automatically eligible for Free School Meals. Please see http://www.oldham.gov.uk/info/200231/education_grants_and_allowances/161/school_meals to see if you could be eligible for free school meals. Dinners should be paid in advance of meals being taken each Monday. Please either pay by Parentmail or put your child’s dinner money in an envelope with their name, class and ‘dinner money’ clearly marked on. This can be handed to classteachers during registration (this process eases congestion at the school office and will save you having to wait to hand dinner money in). Thank you.

If your child is unwell please remember to ring the school office and leave a message on the absence line answer machine about your child’s absence. Contact needs to be made on each day of absence. Thank you.

Please take a look at our website http://www.stannesroyton.oldham.sch.uk/ . It

includes all our statutory information; including curriculum info and topics. You can also find

newsletters, useful forms, information about St Anne’s Care club, our church and we even have

a Twitter feed.

If you have not done so already, please complete and return the contact forms that have been sent home. Please note that the Parentmail system is not linked to the school database and so if you make amendments on Parentmail you will also need to notify the office. It is vital that we have up to date information for your child so that you can be contacted in an emergency.

Thank you.

Key Stage Assessments It may only be the start of the year but we need to remind parents that important assessments take place in May and June this year. Y6 will take the statutory KS2 SATs week beginning 8th May 2017 and all children must be in attendance for that week. Y2 also undertake KS1 SATs throughout May and Y1 have the Phonics Screening Check the week beginning 12th June 2017. Again these are a statutory requirement all children must complete.

Attendance - Reminders Education is a vital part of a child’s development and as such the child’s right to education should be protected. St Anne’s CE (Aided) Primary School takes a strong line in this respect and relies on the support of parents to ensure that attendance is as high as possible. Good attendance ensures children benefit fully from their education and achieve well.

School starts promptly at 9am and ends at 3.15pm. If children arrive late or are collected early from school vital learning time can be lost. So we hope you support us in our commitment to Oldham Education and Skills Commission’s vision for all children to be ‘School Ready’, ‘Work Ready’ and ‘Life Ready’. Through excellent punctuality children also learn a valuable life skill for their adult life.

In September 2013 legislation came into force meaning that term time holidays could no longer be authorised. Term time holidays will result in unauthorised absences being recorded for each day of absence from school. This could result in a Fixed Penalty Notice being issued by the Local Authority. A full list of our term dates can be found on our website.

Medical appointments during the school day can also have a negative effect your child’s attendance. We politely request that you book routine medical appointments out of school hours or during the school holidays . If an appointment is needed during school hours please provide an appointment card or letter to the school office so that we can record it accordingly (otherwise the absence will be recorded as an unauthorised absence).

If your child is absent from school due to sickness please telephone school or log the absence on the Parentmail app for each day of absence before 9am . Please don’t pass verbal messages though staff at the classroom door as teachers will not able to relay the message to the school office in time due to their teaching commitments.

Although we are not legally obliged to do so, we can administer non-prescribed medication (e.g. calpol?) if your child is feeling a little under the weather but you feel that they could manage the school day. We will need your permission to do this and a form is available from the school office. ALL Medication (including throat lozenges) must be brought to the office to be stored safely and securely.

We continuously monitor attendance and thank you in advance for your continued support.

Have you recently changed your mobile contract? Changed jobs? Changed home telephone provider? Moved? Please ensure you have updated the school with any changes to your contact details. Thank you.

Parentmail Since 1st April 2017 we are now cashless. This means that we no longer take cash payments or cheque payments through the school office. All payments for dinner money, school disco, Secret Santa/Mother’s day/Father’s Day, donations for school trips/pantomimes etc will need to be paid for through Parentmail or at a Paypoint store. This is possible when Parentmail generate a barcode to pay at a Paypoint store.

We also use Parentmail for electronic permission for such things as school trips, registering for after school clubs, completion of forms and booking appointments for Parents’ Evening - so it is well worth registering.

If you are not currently registered for Parentmail and need registration details, or if you need another family member to register (i.e. Spouse/Grandparents etc) or have any questions then please do not hesitate to contact the school office who will be happy to help.

To help us keep our school head lice free please ensure that you regularly check your child’s hair. Thank you.

Please drive and park safely and considerately around our school to keep our children safe.

Attendance Education is a vital part of a child’s development and as such the child’s right to education should be protected. St Anne’s CE (Aided) Primary School takes a strong line in this respect and relies on the support of parents to ensure that our attendance is as high as possible. All pupils have a right to education. A child is of statutory school age between 5 and 16. Parents/carers have a legal responsibility to ensure their child attends regularly and punctually. If a child does not, parents/carers may be breaking the law. If the school has concerns about a pupil being absent , or does not accept the explanation for an absence as genuine, the Headteacher or School Office staff will raise the matter with the Education Attendance Service. At St Anne’s we expect all children to have attendance that is classed as excellent. At St Anne’s we use the following categories which are in line with the DFE guidelines: Attendance recorded at 96.5% - Excellent At St Anne’s attendance at 96.5% or above is classed as regular attendance Attendance recorded at 95.1-96.49% -Good *Attendance recorded at 94.24-95.09% - Average *Attendance recorded at 94.23% and below – The DFE define attendance at 90% or below as Persistent Absence. *Attendance categorised as 95.09% or below will require medical evidence to be provided to allow us to authorise the absence. Unauthorised absences and lates can lead to a penalty notice fine; which if unpaid could lead to prosecution. What can you do to ensure your child is getting full access to the education they deserve?

• Ensure your child attends school every single day possible – Everyone feels a little under the weather from time to time and in most cases a little over the counter medication can help us through the day. Although we are not legal obliged to do so, at St Anne’s we will administer over the counter medications such as Calpol, cough medicine, Ibuprofen etc to your child on your behalf. Just bring the medication in to the school office (please do not send it in with your child), fill out an authorisation form (available from the office and the school website) and we will sort the rest. If your child is really unwell during the day we will call you.

• Make sure your child attends school on time every day - Doors close at 9am promptly so please make sure you arrive in enough time for your child to enter school before this. If your child is late please ensure that you report to the main reception in the Juniors. This is to ensure your child’s attendance has been recorded on the fire register. Continuous late attendance can have an adverse effect on your child’s overall attendance and this can lead to a fixed term penalty notice fine.

• Make all non-urgent appointments outside of school time or in the school holidays – Children should not be attending routine medical appointments (e.g. dentist, optician) during school time. For non-routine appointments, such as consultant appointments , we will record the absence as M (Medical) ONLY if we receive a copy of the appointment letter. Medical appointments do have an adverse affect on your child’s attendance are a recorded as an absence.

• Do not take your child on term time holidays – A pupil’s absence during term time can seriously disrupt their continuity of learning. Not only do they miss the teaching provided on the days they are away, they are also less prepared for subsequent lessons on their return. There is a consequent risk of underachievement. Parents / carers do not have a right to take their child out of school for a holiday during term time. As a result family holidays should be planned during the school holidays. As of September 2013 the School Governors agreed that, in line with the law, no holidays taken in term time would be authorised. In accordance with the Local Authority Attendance Policy, school will refer for a Fixed Penalty Notice fine for unauthorised holidays of 5 days or more. Taking holidays during term time leaves very little allowances for illness before a child’s attendance becomes a major cause of concern.

Please drive safely and park considerately around our school to keep our children safe.

Please check that ALL personal items, including school uniform, have your child’s name on. We are only able to reunite items with their owner if they are named. Thank you.

Dates for your Diary

The above dates and times and events may on occasion need to be amended. It is regrettable and we will aim to give you as much notice as possible in the event of any change.

Attendance - Reminders The Department for Children, Schools and Families expects all students to achieve an attendance level of at least 95 percent in every school year and individual schools generally expect a much higher level. At St Anne’s we expect the level of attendance to be at least 96.5%. Persistent gaps in your child’s education can have a serious impact on their educational attainment. It is a parent’s legal responsibility to ensure the regular, full-time attendance of their children. Failing to do this could lead to legal proceedings from the LA and a Penalty Notice (fine) being issued. Parents do not have the legal right to take their child out of school on holiday during term time. Term-time holidays are no longer authorised and you will be issued a Penalty Notice by the Education Attendance Service and your child could lose their school place. Routine medical appointments such as routine opticians check up, dentist check ups etc. should not be taken during school time. A child’s education can be adversely affected by poor attendance. At St Anne’s CE (Aided) Primary School we place great emphasis on good attendance as a positive step in helping children to (a) have full access to the curriculum and (b) achieve their potential. We have recently sent out Gold, Silver and Bronze attendance badges. These have been awarded for attendance last half term (between 20th February 2017 and 7th April 2017). • Gold is for 100% attendance for last half term • Silver is for excellent attendance for last half term (Attendance recorded at 96.5% or above - Excellent.) • Bronze is for good attendance for last half term (Attendance recorded at 95.1-96.49% -Good) Please note that children need to wear only one badge at time. If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance and would like to discuss it please contact the school office on 0161 624 9885. Event Class Time Date/Days

2017

Term Time Holidays In September 2013 new legislation on school attendance came into force. This was to ensure that all pupils attend school regularly and to challenge the expectation that 10 days can be authorised for term time holidays. The amendment to the law stated that ‘if children are taken away for a two week holiday every year and have an average number of days off for sickness and appointments, then by the time they leave school at sixteen they will have missed a year of school’. This is obviously detrimental to a child’s academic achievement. Good attendance ensures children benefit from education and achieve their full potential. At St Anne’s we do not authorised term time holidays for legal aged school children. In accordance with the Local Authority Attendance Policy, school will refer for a Fixed Penalty Notice fine for unauthorised holidays of 5 days or more.

Since September 2013 Medical appointments count as an authorised absence when medical evidence is provided (if no medical evidence is provided they will be marked as unauthorised absence) Medical appointments during school time mean that your child will not receive the 100% attendance award. There is no entitlement for parents to take children out of school for term time holidays. From September 2013 in line with the law we do not authorise term time holidays. Requests may still be made for an absence in ‘exceptional circumstances’ and these will continue to be assessed ‘case by case’ by our Governing Body. A full list of our holiday dates can be found on our website https: www.stannesroyton.oldham.sch.uk/school-calendar-for-the-academic-year-2016-2017 www.stannesroyton.oldham.sch.uk/school-calendar-for-the-academic-year-2017-2018 PLEASE DO NOT REFER TO ANY OTHER WEBSITE THAN OUR OWN as the dates on other websites may be wrong.
