Fire prevention week is upon us. This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!”

Seconds can mean the difference between escaping safely from fire or tragedy. Fire

moves fast. You may have only a few minutes to get out safely once the smoke alarm

sounds. Establish two ways out of every room. This can give you the time needed to get

outside. Practicing your home fire escape drill with everyone in the household is key to

being prepared. MAKE A PLAN!!!

Bring everyone in your household together to make a home fire escape plan. Choose

an outside meeting place. This should be a safe distance in front of the home where

everyone should meet. This can be a tree a light pole or a mailbox. Mark the place on

your escape plan.

The Jerome City Fire Department will be visiting the Jerome schools October 9th through the 18th teaching students,

Kindergarten through 5th grade, some very important fire safety and prevention skills while focusing on this year’s

theme. All students will have the opportunity to participate in an interactive and informative coloring contest.

To celebrate a successful fire prevention week Jerome City and Jerome Rural Fire Departments will be hosting a FREE

Community Pancake Breakfast on Saturday October 14th. Join us on the 100 Block of East Ave A between the Jerome City

and Rural Fire Stations from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. In honor of this year’s theme will have a sign-up sheet for anyone who

is needing smoke alarms checked, replaced or installed in their home. We will send firefighters to your home to install

new smoke alarms and help you make sure they are working properly. We hope to see you there!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. If you or

someone you love is in a relationship that has the

behaviors listed on the wheel, be aware the relationship

is likely abusive. Consider contacting Crisis Center of

Magic Valley, 733-0100 or the 24 hour hotline,

1-800-882-3236.

Domestic violence is about power and control, either

through actual or assumed power. It has no boundaries

and can affect all levels of society, religion, economic

standing and ethnic background. Both men and women

can be victims of domestic violence. The wheel on the right

is a way of looking at the behaviors abusers use to get and

keep control in their relationships. Battering is a choice. It

is used to gain power and control over another person.

Physical abuse is only one part of a system of abusive

behaviors.

Library Project

We are digitizing the old North Side News! This paper dates back to 1908. We will be able to make the

paper available to everyone online. Search for news related to

a family member. Look for events of the past. Get the scoop

on your graduating class.

This year the library got things started with a single reel and

for the creation of the website that will house the content.

There are 80 reels of microfilm to process. The overall project

will cost about $15,000. That sounds a little daunting, but we

are off to a good start thanks to the generosity of individuals

and several organizations who have contributed to this project. Be sure to check out the website at

http://jerome.advantage-preservation.com/.

Friends of the Library Book Sale

Mark your calendar for this bi-annual event. The Jerome Friends

of the Library will be having their book and bake sale the first

week of November.

The presale runs from 5:00 – 7:00 on Thursday, November 2nd.

This is when the selection is the greatest. No bake goods are

available at the presale. The sale continues on Friday, November

3rd from 10:00 – 5:00. You’ll want to get there early if you want

the best selection of baked goods. The final day of the sale is

Saturday, November 4th. The sale opens at 10:00 and is over at

2:00. This is the day when you get the best bargain.

The Friends are always looking for volunteers for setup and tear

down. If you have some time to spare on Wednesday or on

Saturday afternoon, contact the library.

Mrs. Martha McCuiston will be teaching our Dual Immersion Kindergarten class. She has experience as a teacher in

Mexico and has also worked as and ESL Paraprofessional while completing her requirements for Idaho Certification. It is

so much fun to see her with our littlest learners. These are full classes of 25 in each session.

As our Dual Immersion Program has grown, we are also pleased to welcome Ms. Ruth Quispe to 2nd grade. Ruth has 10

years of experience as a certified teacher in Peru and has worked the last few years as a paraprofessional in the Dual

Immersion school in Blaine County. Ruth is a great addition to our program and will be partnering with Mrs. Jody Billiard.

They are becoming a dynamic team!

Mrs. Sally Davis has moved from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to join our kindergarten team. Mrs. Davis came highly

recommended by staff and parents of her previous school. She is excited for this new adventure in Idaho and we are

thrilled to have her on our team.

Ms. Rebecca Hoff is new to Jefferson Elementary and we are pleased to also welcome her to the profession! Rebecca is

teaching 2nd graders and will also be helping as one of the Jerome Middle School Volleyball Coaches. She spent a

semester working at Jerome Academy, and we are looking forward to her work at Jefferson.

Krystal McKean is our new Head Custodian and she is doing an AMAZING job! Her and her team are cleaning, organizing,

and getting all kinds of jobs caught up.

We also have three new paraprofessionals who have joined us. Lisa Hernandez has joined our Title 1 team from the

middle school, Jeneca Sabala has rejoined our Title 1 team after a year off with her new twins, and Sara Choate has

become a member of the special education team part time. All of these ladies are proving to be highly valued members

of the Jefferson staff.

Children’s Choice Book Awards

Jefferson Elementary School has been selected to be one of a handful of sites in the state to be a part of the Children’s

Choices in Literature Project. Boise State has one of five sites nationwide that receive the most current books from

publishers. These books are distributed to the selected schools in labeled boxes, which are rotated through classrooms

throughout the year. Children read the books and vote by simply checking one of three boxes (liked, sort of liked, did not

like) along with the title/book# on a ballot. Ballots are collected by the teacher or volunteer and entered on an excel

spreadsheet. The votes are compiled, sent back to Dr. Stan Steiner at BSU, and then they are shared with the

International Reading Association and Children’s Book Council who announce the winners. The project begins in

September 2017 and ends in early February 2018. At the end of the project books are given to teacher participants to

use as they wish. This is an honor for our staff and students and a big boost to our classroom libraries.

excited to teach here! Go Vandals!

John Campbell-I was born and raised here in Idaho. I graduated from Wendell High School and joined the army after

ZPass

In an effort to provide additional safety for students and the peace-of-mind for parents that comes with knowing your

child has safely boarded their bus or arrived at school, Jerome School District has implemented a system that allows us to

know the location of where students get on and off a bus. Students have been issued a card that they use to check on

and off the bus as they enter and exit the bus. We encourage parents to sign up for the text-messaging app if they have

not already done so. This app will let parents know when their child scans on and off the bus. The link for parents to sign

up is https://www.zpassplus.com.
