ADDING DISTANCE!Everyone would like to hit the ball farther. So, for the next couple articles I am goingto talk about ways to help you gain more

distance. The key to hitting it further is toincrease swing speed, without losing control. One factor we have to overcome is that as weage, we lose the flexibility and muscle massneeded to create speed. But no matter what ourage, we are still able to work out and trainwhatever we have left in the tank. In this articleI will cover fitness tips shared by jet-elitetraining.com to assist us in adding distanceand control in the golf swing.-The first key to hitting it farther is tounderstand that you can only swing the club asfast as you can slow it down. Your brain willonly let you move as fast as you can withoutinjury. So, if you want to hit it farther you mustfirst be able to slow the club down safely at fasterspeeds. There are two key body partsresponsible for deceleration after the swing andthey are the hamstrings and the scapulars, muscles between your shoulder blades. Here area few ways to help you train your body to

decelerate the club at faster speeds.-First thing to try is to walk or pedal on astationary bike backwards. This will strengthenthe back of your legs; try spending half of yourcardio time moving in reverse. Stretchingdownward towards your toes with legsstraightened will help stretch this area as well. The second drill is to pretend someone put apencil between your shoulder blades, and youneed to keep it there by pinching them together.Do this several times, squeezing in the back andthen releasing. Doing these exercises will helptrain and build up your muscles that will helpyou gain more control of the golf club andhopefully add some distance!John HarrisonGolf Professional

We have been working and continue towork to improve the areas of thegreens that have been slower to fill-

in. Most of the greens sodding is now completeand we should continue to see the greensimprove in the weaker areas for as long as thesoil temperatures allow. On a weekly basis(normally on Mondays) we will continuetopdressing the greens with sand. The sandwill be applied heavier in the thinner areas. Inpreparation for winter dormancy, we haveraised the mowing heights on the greens at.150" height (which is still slightly higher thanour normal .130" height) and we are rolling thegreens to help promote a smoother roll for yourgolf ball. We have also begun applying thechemical Chloro-Green on the course greenswhich will allow the dormant grass to keep itsgreen color. This spray pigment is not a paint ordye and does not cause any stress to the grassplant. The putting green re-sodding project has also

been completed and we have extended thechipping area utilizing the tif-grand grass that

was installed around the collars of the coursegreens. The new sod is not yet ready for use, butwe plan to have it back up to playabilitystandards by early spring. In October we will be over-seeded all tee

boxes on the course and the practice range dueto the heavy concentration of use in those areasthroughout the winter months. We willhowever continue the practice of not over-seeding our fairways and greens again this year, which has proven to have a very positive impacton the quality of our turf, especially in ourfairways. We have raised the heights in thefairways to allow for a thicker stand of grass efor our winter play. Hopefully, mother naturewill be kind to us this fall and winter and we'llhave the course in great shape for next springWe continue to ask your help in repairing ball

marks on the greens and filling your divots withsand, especially as the recovery period is longerduring the winter. If you have any questionsregarding the golf course, please feel free tocontact me.Gordon Williams, Golf Course Superintendant

CCWC NEWSSeptember was an active month for the CoosawCreek Women’s Club. This Fall, we areplanning a number of fun activities too.

On Labor Day, we sponsored a hole at the PatrickBeale Memorial Golf Tournament. Later inSeptember, a number of our members gathered at theclubhouse for a pop-up Social. These have provenpopular, so look forward to more of them. Noprogram is planned at the pop-ups, just an emailmessage about a pop-up gathering will be sent out

about a week ahead;the Socials are simplyfor friends andneighbors to gettogether. In October,we may change thatto a “fire pit Social”backyard gathering.

Coming in November, CCWC women will again beselling holiday Poinsettias. They will be available in2 sizes, in either white or red. The plants will bedelivered to Coosaw direct from the nursery, and willbe ready for pick up after Thanksgiving.
