OCTOBER 2016 NEWSLETTER PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

“In life we experience so much fragmentation of thought and feeling...

art brings them back together.” Gina Gibney

“I’m trying to capture in language the things that I see and feel as a way of recording their beauty

and power and terror, so that I can return to those things and relive them. In that way, I try to have

some sense of control in a chaotic world.” Kwame Dawes Ph.D

Poet in Residence

Univ of S. Carolina

The day after Bastille Day and the atrocity in Nice, France, I was so troubled. I was experiencing a

kind of emotionless, intellectual grief. I hadn’t lost a family member and the mayhem had happened

on the other side of the world but I was left in a place that, while without tears, caused a psychic pain,

a negation of my optimism, a sadness for the dead and I suppose an even deeper sadness for the

living. But, I couldn’t march in solidarity with grieving families or a despairing nation. I couldn’t

lay flowers or light candles on the Promenade des Anglais, so I painted four small portraits that gave

a voice to my distress. (Ou es tu, Jeanne D’Arc? Nous avons besoin de toi! Forgive my high school

French. Where are you, Joan of Arc? We need you!) Perhaps the only place they will ever hang is

on my wall but they gave voice to something that defied words. I suppose that is art.

The cartoonist James Sturm put his need to create art this way:

“I could attribute art to a high-minded impulse to connect with others, or to understand the world, or

a narcissistic coping mechanism, or a desire to be famous, or therapy, or my religious discipline, or

to provide a sense of control, or a desire to surrender control, etc, etc, etc.”

So what is your “WHY”? An appetite? A need? A fear? A question? An Answer? An expectation? A

dream? Guilt? Hope? Beauty? What does it take to encourage you to persist in the act of creation? I

know that thinking about “why” you create art may interfere with the act of creation but I would like

to invite those of you who are so inclined to send me a note that speaks to why YOU do it. I would

like to share your thoughts in our next newsletter.

I asked my 8 year old granddaughter why she creates art and she said “because it’s peaceful and it

makes me calm”. Amen, little one.

NOVEMBER MEETING

TALK BY HERMANN BRANDT

Hermann will give an overview of the crisis and the complexities and challenges faced by those

directly involved like The Tashinga Initiative – a conservation organization in Zimbabwe, which is on

the front lines of dealing with poaching and conservation.

He is also offering a workshop on November 12 – 13 (see details in the Art Education section below).

“Art with a Cause

I’ve always felt that art can be used as a means to draw attention to the issues of

our day. One that is of great concern to me is the illegal poaching of elephant and

rhino for their ivory and horns. And this is only a small part of the massive black

market trade in wildlife. As a personal response, I have started a series of sculptures

of the most threatened and endangered species, which I will bring along.”

MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING - SEPTEMBER 2016

Federation of Canadian Artists – Calgary Chapter

General Monthly Meeting: Tuesday, September 20, 2016

Lakeview Community Centre

President, Bob McAllister, called the meeting to order at 7:10 PM.

1. Minutes of April Meeting. Rosemary Bennett moved that the minutes of the May

17, 2016 General Meeting be adopted as circulated. Motion seconded by

Sherry Telle. Passed.

2. Treasurer Report. Bob McAllister delivered the Treasurer’s report.

Casino Account Balance $84,964.04

Operating Account $11,651.32

PayPal $425.46

Pending Operating Expense $582.33

Bob announced that Nancy Walker has elected to resign as Treasurer. An

emergency Executive meeting was held on Saturday, September 18 and it was

decided to go with a team approach in handling this job function. Two outside

people have been sourced, one from law firm, and the other from a medical

supply company, that will handle the bulk of the work. However, an internal

person will still be needed to coordinate the Treasurer’s function.

3. Gallery Liaison Report. Ron Czemeres reported that a new show has started last

week at Palliser Art and Framing. The FCA, Calgary Chapter, started showing as

a group at this venue in May, 2015. This venue was brought to our attention by

Sharon Williams. So far a total of 5 shows have taken place, each lasting about 3

months. This sixth show will be the last as the owner, Allan Brown, has decided to

go strictly with a solo format starting in early 2017. This last show will be extended

over the Holiday season. Several of our members will be having solo shows at this

venue in the future. In total, 41 of our members have shown over 80 paintings at

this venue, and to date 9 have sold. This results in a sales rate of about 11%,

which is comparable with our own shows. Hence, the alliance with this venue is

considered a success.

Page 14: OCTOBER 2016 NEWSLETTER · The day after Bastille Day and the atrocity in Nice, France, I was so troubled. I was experiencing a kind of emotionless, intellectual grief. I hadn’t

We have another showing opportunity at Art Country Canada in Bragg Creek

(formally the Alley Cat Gallery). Jan Chalupnicek brought this opportunity to our

attention. Bob McAllister has been in conversation with the owner, Angelo

Avionitis. There has been nothing definitely planned yet for this venue regarding

a show for the FCA, Calgary Chapter. Bob announced that there will be a plein

air art festival being hosted by Art Country Canada. The entrance fee will be

$50. There will be a kickoff party September 30 at the gallery followed by plein

air painting on October 1 and 2. Sunday noon, October 9 there will be an

awards event at the Redwood House Community Centre. For information or sign

up call Angelo at 403-949-4141 or 1-877-265-4555. Bob urged that interested

members go out and attend.

4. Mad About Art Show Art Show – and 35 Year Anniversary Celebration, Earl Grey

Golf Club. Anne McGilvary and Judie Popplewell handled this item.

Show:

We will be celebrating our 35 year anniversary at Earl Grey Golf Club on Friday

evening, October 28, 6:00 to 9:00 PM – members and invited guests only. The

Mad About Art Show – public show – will follow spanning 2 days, Saturday,

October 29 and Sunday, October 30, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Submissions: Due September 23. Jury results will be available on October 1 or 2.

Winning pieces will be announced at the Member’s function on the Friday night

of the show on October 28. Show brochures will have this information too. Thank

you to Paula Hawkes and Kathy Hildebrandt in advance for their help in

designing the show brochure.

Invitations: 300 invitations are printed and 50 small posters will be available for

members to distribute. A sample invitation card and poster was presented at the

meeting. It has been sent to Dee for the Chapter FB page and information will

also be on the Chapter website. Rosemary Bennett forwarded a copy for the

Advertising Committee to use too. Thanks to Chris Bartels for taking care of the

chapter email invites and for printing mail labels. The invitations are to be

distributed to as many people as possible and the posters are to be hung in

shopping malls, etc. If more posters are needed, more will be printed. The Show

contacts need to be updated.

Advertising: Rosemary Bennett has turned this committee over to John Abbot

and Linnea Hannigan. We stress to the membership to help get the word out

Page 15: OCTOBER 2016 NEWSLETTER · The day after Bastille Day and the atrocity in Nice, France, I was so troubled. I was experiencing a kind of emotionless, intellectual grief. I hadn’t

15

through social media networks and to their own customer lists. This committee is

asking for volunteers and assistance. We need someone from the membership

who has contacts with people in the media. The Mayor will be invited to the

Friday membership celebration event on October 28. He will need to know if any

special guests will be at the celebration, and if the media will be there. He also

needs to be informed on what he should talk about, if we want him to speak.

We can’t advertise directly with Earl Grey Club members and we can’t put

posters up within the Club area.

The topic of a mail drop off was discussed and if it should be considered. Judie

will be looking into the mail drop off option. Also, advertising in the community

papers should be considered.

Two Door Prize Paintings: We will offer one door prize painting to be drawn each

day of the show. Members need to bring “ready to hang” paintings for

membership voting to the October 18 General Meeting. Successful artists will

receive $200 for their donation. Rex Beanland has donated a piece that will be

drawn at the Sunday show as the “grand prize” for the weekend.

Charity Donation: We will not include a charity donation at this show.

Pre-show Signage: After considerable research and weighing our options, we

have decided to continue to use the Magnet signs that we have used for a

number of the past shows. We would like to double our pre-show signage. Thank

you to Janie Lockwood who helped with our research and for taking on the job

of organizing this pre-signage. Anne requested that the pre-show signage

budget be increased by $1,500 to cover the additional signage.

Nadine Johnston moved that and additional $1,500 be approved for additional

signage. Seconded by Terry Finnegan. Motion carried.

Casandra Arnold moved that funds of $1,000 be approved for a mail out.

Seconded by Caran Magaw. Motion carried.

Easel Delivery: We are planning to have easels delivered on Thursday, October

27 at 9:00 AM. Our driver is bringing a helper this time so the actual unloading of

the truck will be easier for the membership. Help will be required with bringing in

the easels and setting up the tables. This job will be included on the sitters list.

Page 16: OCTOBER 2016 NEWSLETTER · The day after Bastille Day and the atrocity in Nice, France, I was so troubled. I was experiencing a kind of emotionless, intellectual grief. I hadn’t

Set-up: Will take place for the show on either Thursday or the Friday morning. We

will confirm with Earl Grey closer to the show dates to see if we can get in early

for set-up as the delivery takes place. Judie and Anne will be on site to take

delivery and we are asking for volunteers to assist especially if we can go ahead

and structure the rooms for the show.

Artwork Delivery: Members are to bring their paintings to the facility on Friday,

October 28 at 3:30 PM by the main door. Only the hanging committee can be in

attendance from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Doors open for the Members’ party at 6:00 PM.

Judie lead the discussion on acceptable framing. Wide gallery wrapped

paintings (2” or so in width) are acceptable, but they must be finished along the

sides and be hanger ready. Unframed ¼” and ½” panels will not be accepted.

Volunteers: Sitter’s list will be at the October General Meeting but you can

contact Dawn Heinemeyer before that to sign up for jobs. There will be 2 sitters

lists, one for each day of the 2 day show.

Note to Members: There is no artist lounge available at this venue. You cannot

bring your own food or drinks into the facility. Please keep any extra items you

brought to the show in your car. The Club restaurant is available for participants

of the show by reservation. You pay your own bill.

Music and Microphone Options: Tammy Fisher has done some research for us

about possible sound systems for future shows. Thanks goes to Tammy for doing

this. Earl Grey has a system that will play CD’s. They also have a wireless

microphone but we will be looking at purchasing some sort of sound system if

needed.

Tickets for the October 28 Member Celebration: Paula Hawkes indicated that

tickets for members for the Friday evening celebration will get them for free.

However, invited guests will be charged $25. Tickets were being sold at this

General Meeting, and the deadline for ticket purchases will be at the next

General Meeting. Members can also mail in their cheques to Paula. She will be

looking into providing payment on line on our website through PayPal.

For people who can’t pick up their tickets prior to the event, they will be made

available at the door the evening of the event. There will be appetizers served, a

cake, and a cash bar.

Other Items: The next Art Show is at Edgemont on March 4, 2017. We have the

hall also booked for March 3 for set-up. The show co-ordinators job is open to

applicants and Anne and Judie would like to use the March Show as a job

shadow opportunity to work with them and learn the ins and outs of the job. The

May, 2017 Show locations is yet to be announced. Earl Grey was being

considered, but we need to get the up and coming show experience

concluded to see how this venue works for us.

5. Workshops. Caran Magaw and Sheila Mitchell handled this item. The Workshops

are being handled differently now. All of the Workshops for the entire year

2016/17 have already been booked. Registration for a Workshop will start a

month before the Workshop is held. Pre-registration will be offered at the

General Meeting to give our members a bit of jump ahead of members from the

public registering. Registration will officially open on line 24 hours after the

General Meeting. Registration will only be available a month ahead of a

Workshop and not for ones off in the future beyond the up and coming

Workshop. Workshops can be paid for by cheque and casino vouchers. Cash

will no longer be accepted as it is too hard to track. Members are to let

members of the public know about our Workshops by word of mouth. We would

like to have our Workshops as well attended as possible.

A Life Drawing pilot project has started over the summer. Every Thursday evening

a live model was made available at Kensington Art Supply. The cost is $10 per

person for members and non-members. A space heater is needed as the studio

at Kensington can become cold. Bob asked if anyone had a space heater that

can be borrowed or donated. Co-ordinators will be needed to run the life

drawing sessions in one month durations, and anyone volunteering for this will get

that month free. Caran and Sheila will be too involved with the Workshops

coming up to continue to co-ordinate the Life Drawing sessions.

Bob announced that funding (scholarships) will be made available for members

with financial needs when it comes to covering the cost for Workshops and the

Life Drawing sessions.

6. Art Avenue Submissions. Maureen Flynn-Burhoe (ocean.flynn@gmailcom) is our

liaison with the Art Avenue Magazine published by our Vancouver headquarters.

Anyone who has archival material regarding our Chapter, and anyone that will

be taking photographs at our up and coming 35th Anniversary Celebration, are

to email this material to Maureen by a December 1 deadline so that an article

can be written up about our Chapter and the up and coming celebration.

7. Volunteers: As mentioned before, a Life Drawing coordinator is needed for one

month stints to handle the Life Drawing sessions. Also, an ART CHAT coordinator is

needed. For next fall we will need someone to handle the programs that occur

after the General Meetings are adjourned.

8. Other Items. Casandra Arnold is now handling the Newsletter. She will be going

on an extensive trip to Australia and Nepal. She will have email access while at

Australia, but spotty access while in Nepal. Please send in your Newsletter items

as soon as you can. The next Newsletter deadline is Sunday, September 25. If

anyone notices a correction to a Newsletter article, they should contact the

writer of the article rather than Casandra directly. This will reduce the number of

emails flying back and forth.

Dee Poisson handles our FaceBook Page. She indicated that there is a “red

banner” page where members can post information that only our own members

can see. Then there is public page where advertising and other notifications can

be made that the general public has access to.

Bob McAllister announced that there will be a Plein Air Retreat organized by the

Federation of Canadian Artists, Vancouver, at the Flying U Ranch in Cariboo, BC

on September 23 to 29, 2017. For more information visit www.artists.ca or call 604-

681-2744.

Bob McAllister received a thank you card from the Centennial Galley thanking us

for the donation that was made in support of that organization. It is very much

appreciated.

9. Adjournment. Bob McAllister adjourned the meeting at 8:10 PM for the social

break. Following that there were two breakout groups being run simultaneously,

one being handled by Dee Poisson on social media, and the second one being

handled by Bob McAllister on life drawing. There was no program following the

meeting, other than the breakout groups.
