October 2016 Delaware Valley NCRS Chapter Newsletter Chairperson’s Notes By John Kane For 2016 the NCRS Gallery at Corvettes at Carlisle returned to a tent on the fairgrounds after being held in the building next to Gate 1 for the last ten years. This change required the committee to get accustomed to a number of changes. The tent itself was a very modern high-tech design that was very attractive and convenient. It included skylights in the end panels that allowed light to enter the tent from as high as 30 feet from the ground on both ends. There were no large poles in the central area of the tent as is usual with such large tents. The side curtains were very easy to close and the Carlisle workers took over the responsibility of that duty from us which was very helpful. The weather was quite hot but a cool breeze from the north blew under the north side of the tent which kept the comfort index under the tent quite tolerable. The grouping of cars inside the building was amazing as usual. Frank Stech and Elaine Raisner did another superior job in organizing such a fine showing of top flight NCRS Corvettes. Thank you also goes out to the committee and, particularly, to all the Chapter members and friends who helped in setting up on Thursday and in staffing the facility all day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We want to also particularly thank Clancy Smith and his wife, Terry for their efforts in making this event so successful this year as they have done for many prior years. Thanks to all. Our Run for the Ribbons NCRS Corvette meet will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at County Corvettes in Westchester, PA. Note that this year the location is moving to a new location which is only two buildings south of the prior location on Westtown Road in Westchester PA. Please try to plan to arrive at County Corvette early on October 9 th , so we can get the judging underway early. For 2016 the NCRS Gallery at Corvettes at Carlisle returned to a tent on the fairgrounds after being held in the building next to Gate 1 for the last ten years. This change required the committee to get accustomed to a number of changes. The tent itself was a very modern high-tech design that was very attractive and convenient.

Delaware Valley Chapter – 2000 (Year 23) By Club Historian Bob Cook

At Corvettes at Carlisle this year, I saw Bill Vyn and asked him if he had any old newsletters. He got back to us later saying that he has issues from 1991 to 2003. If I can get them from him to scan, it will fill in our missing 1991 to 1998 issues and give us a pretty complete collection of newsletters, except for 1987 and 88. In the last newsletter we reviewed 1999, having skipped 87, 88, 91 through 96, and 98 (all of which I hope I can do later). For this newsletter we will forge on to year 2000. Officers in 2000 included: Chairman – Charlie Busnack; Vice Chairman – Dan Soldano; Secretary – Bill Clausen; Treasurer – John Keane; Show/Meet Chairman – Tim Raisner; Judging Chairman – Frank Stech; Membership Chairman – Tony Sagesse; Nominating Committee Chairperson – Elaine Raisner; Holiday Dinner Chairman – Paul Sedacca; Newsletter Editor/Web Site Administrator – Jim Jordan. The Chairman and Vice Chairman were the only officers to change from 1999 to 2000. (I have been listing the Chapter officers to show how we have maintained a lot of the same membership – and leadership – for a lot of years – which is unique compared to any other organization with which I have been involved. I think this makes the Chapter stronger and certainly gives us a long term perspective on NCRS issues.) The Chapter’s first web site was built in early 2000 by Jim Jordan. Speakers were lined up for the meetings in 2000 – February was Jonathon Barger from Frankford Plating; April was Tony Feil on engine building; and June was Bill Vyn presenting a judging clinic focusing on items such as the correct finishes on chassis parts on the 68 to 72 cars. (I don’t know about the August or October meetings.) The Chapter held a regional meet at Corvettes at Carlisle on August 25 and 26. (I guess the national NCRS changed its tune on having a regional at Corvettes at Carlisle after 1999 was rejected.) There were 115 cars on the show field, 57 were flight judged with 47 top flights and 10 second flights. Eleven cars attempted the Performance Verification Test with 7 passing. In addition, there were 9 Duntov Displays, 4 McLellan Displays, 9 Bowtie Displays, 23 Sportsman participants, 1 Founders Display, and 1 Operations Check. NCRS members in attendance represented 34 states and Canada. The banquet speaker was Dick Guldstrand, who shared stories that “captivated the audience”. And finally, the 20th anniversary of the Run for the Ribbons was held on October 15 at Bryner Chevrolet. Sixty cars participated – 32 for flight judging, 4 for Duntov Display, 1 for McLellan Display, 3 for Bowtie Display, 1 for Founders, and 20 for Sportsman. People came from as far away as Kentucky and Ohio to participate.

Tying the 58 to 62 Seatbelt Hambone Knot By Dave Zuberer / John Hinckley  Insert tag end through hambone and then through the tightener. Loop tag end up over the top of the tightener and then down around the top of the ham bone and back through it. Continue the tag end back over the top of the tightener and then down through the tightener and on through the hambone toward the belt. The tag end of the belt material will be between two earlier loops. Pull on the belt and tag simultaneously to snug the tightener up against the hambone.

Restoration TipsThat Experience has Proven to be Worthwhile By Dick Robinson

Replacement windshield glass is thinner than the original L.O.F. This causes many problems when trying to assemble a CI windshield. Use the gasket made by Corvette Rubber. Their gasket is made to compensate for the thinner glass. (ed: The new windshield glass is not only thinner but also shorter by up to ¼” in some areas. I compared my broken original windshield against the new replacement and noted these differences. That shorter length really comes into play when you have a tight convertible top pull the windshield frame back a bit and expose the edge of the windshield – don’t ask me how I know…)

If your C1 wiper transmission shafts will not compress to release the wind-up tension necessary to make up the cables to the motor drum, submerge them for a day or so in a 50/50 mixture of ATF and acetone in a covered container. This has worked every time for me.

A poor clutch will make driving any Corvette an unpleasant experience, especially those clutches with excessive spring pressures. It is worth the extra money to buy a Centerforce clutch. The OEM GM clutches of the period used what is now an obsolete technology.

In the era when the cars were new, brake shoes were ground to produce a very close tolerance circular contact pattern. Relined shoes today use a higher metallic content than was used originally and are not ground true. The result is often pulling brakes that cannot be adjusted to provide an even stop. If the drums have been trued and the problem persists, usually with bonded linings, you may have to try a riveted set. These often use a softer lining that can be more readily bedded by the drum.

Ignore the factory specs for the spark plug heat range and use only 45s for single-carb engines and 46s for multi-carb and FI engines. Big blocks really need these hotter plugs. The factory must have thought that all the cars were going to be race cars or high speed desert runners to use the 43 cold plugs they specified

It bears repeating that the factory made no provision to lubricate the clutch pedal rod. It should be done at least once a year to avoid excessive wear to the rod.

Hubcap Rescue By Tom Hoyer

I attend auctions every now and then and sometimes come away with some real deals. A while back I was at an auction in Emmaus at an old auto shop. Poking around I wasn’t seeing much that interested me, mostly machining tools and such. I opened up one cabinet and found sitting on the shelf five 1963 Corvette Hubcaps and two 59 to 62 hubcaps. Four of the five 63 caps were the full stainless ones while the other two were the frosted type. A quick search on ebay told me that these may be worth sticking around for as they seem to fetch a good price.

When they came up for auction, it was only myself and another bidder who really didn’t seem too interested. It also helped that the auctioneer didn’t know what they went on – “Box of old Chevy hubcaps here……” Bottom line, I paid $45 for the set of 63 caps and $50 for the 59-62 caps. Not too shabby. After getting them home, I noticed that the four stainless 63 caps were in real nice shape other than being covered in years of dirt, The chrome parts had a nice green oxidation to them. The frosted one was not in as good a shape, having some dents and dings.

In order to clean them up I removed all of the screws holding the spinner and chrome parts on. The chrome parts were lightly cleaned under running water with a Brillo pad. They came up pretty good. After a quick coat of wax they were downright shiny!

Page 11: October 2016 Delaware Valley NCRS Chapter Newsletter · October 2016 Delaware Valley NCRS Chapter Newsletter ... 1965 Ermine White Convertible Frank Chicherchia - New York JUDGING

October 2016

 11

One thing I noticed when disassembling them was that one of the hub caps was missing a screw that held the spinner on. Upon closer investigation, they must have run out of screws that day at the factory. The screws used are thread cutting screws and the hole where the screw was missing had no threads in it. This indicated to me that there must have never been a screw put in when the hub cap was originally assembled.

The main part of each hub cap was in real nice shape. No curb rash and very minor, if any, dings from installing them. Cleaning these parts was done using Simple Green and a sponge along with lots of running water to keep from making any new scratches in them.

Page 12: October 2016 Delaware Valley NCRS Chapter Newsletter · October 2016 Delaware Valley NCRS Chapter Newsletter ... 1965 Ermine White Convertible Frank Chicherchia - New York JUDGING

October 2016

 12

Once each cap was cleaned up I proceeded to polish them by hand. This took several hours over the course of a few weekends. I used Maguires #6 polish / wax and it seemed to work out very well. Keep in mind that I am not a professional stainless polisher. Having the right buffers would have made these spotless.

Reassembly was just the opposite of assembly, but taking care to not let the chrome parts scratch the newly polished stainless. After cleaning / before polishing The finished product came out better than I expected. Eventually I put them up for auction and made a tidy profit for my initial $50 investment (more money to buy parts for the 58!)

FALL ROAD TOUR TO DON KLUMPP’S COLLECTION and

TRAILER SEMINAR by Dick Robinson

Sunday, October 23rd is the date for our fall driving tour in whatever car you care to drive—Corvettes preferred, of course. We will leave the Shriner’s Hall at 9 am. The tour will take us to see an outstanding train layout and collection and a local car collection in Delaware County. On the way to Don’s shop in West Grove Pa we will drive through some really interesting rural suburban scenery.

This cannot be a follow-the-leader-type tour, as we will at times be in congested areas. Each driver will have a printed route layout to follow. It will be helpful if each car includes someone acting as a navigator. GPS’s can be useful. This is the driving format used by all of the other touring clubs that I am aware of. Further details will follow as things are firmed up. This is a rain or shine event. Remember to start off with plenty of gas in the tank.

Newsletters Needed By: Bob Cook

The best way to retrieve our Chapter’s history is through the quarterly newsletters that have been sent to members since July of 1978. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find some of the newsletters. If you have any of the following issues, please bring them to any meeting. I will copy them and get the originals back to you.

Sept or Oct, 1978 – Newsletter Issue #2 Late 1986, all of 1987 and 1988 All of 1991 through early 2000

Also, if you have pictures or other memorabilia from “old” events, please let me make copies. Please note the event, date and the people in the pictures (if you know any of these).

2017 Board Election It is that time again to elect our Chapter Board for 2017. If you’d like to nominate anybody, including yourself, please let me know. Obviously, if you nominate yourself, consider yourself a volunteer to hold one of the offices, a very noble thing! Officer positions are Chairperson, Vice/Membership Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Meet/Activity Chairperson, Judging Chairperson, Website Administrator, Chapter Historian, Newsletter Editor. Elections will be held during the October chapter meeting and you must be a paid member and be present if you’d like to vote…..no absentee ballots! You can make a nomination at the meeting, but if you nominate someone ahead of time, it would be much easier for that person to make a decision concerning whether they want to be considered or not. For any questions, please email me at [email protected] or call me at 609-636-3333. Dan Soldano
