October 2015 So the sun sets on another brilliant day at N.H.Y.C. Drone photo by Mike Hojka The Season’s end is nearly here……….. North Haven Yacht Club has enjoyed a busy 50th anniversary year, with many well attended events and activities. Lots of hard work behind the scenes by many of our members have ensured that these social gatherings have been a huge success. The regatta N.H.Y.C. laid on for the Chernobyl’s Children Life Line was well received by the children, their host families, and embraced by our club members. The activities, surroundings and hospitality they enjoyed back in July will I’m sure be etched on their memories for ever. Our club’s committee have all voted in favour of holding this event next year, and the CCLL charity have been invited back to our club next year. Regarding charities… If at the end of the season you still have a few pennies left idle, please remember the charities North Haven are supporting, both local charities, details and the collection box are in the clubhouse. The Kids Club set off on a great adventure to Brownsea Island, camping, kayaking, and sailing, mums and dads went as well, and after the wet start, thoroughly enjoyed the expedition………. Sailing and fishing sections have had a mixed season, unfortunately the weather had it’s say on a few occasions. Racing and cruising has had steady support, and we need to encourage more of our shy fishermen and women to join in the competitions. Our Club newsletter has had good feed back, again lots of behind the scenes work involved. David Butcher is happy to accept articles of interest, and can be contacted via the address on the newsletter. Most of us nowadays carry a camera around, and I know there are members of North Haven who are very good amateur photographers. If there are any members who would like to start a camera club please email me, it may be just the tonic for the winter evenings. Please check your details on our Duty Man system you may add another email address, or your mobile phone number, and ensure your contact details are updated Don’t forget our club runs social events throughout the year, please keep a lookout on the notice board and website for forthcoming gatherings. I would like to thank everyone for their support and help in my first year as Commodore. Without the efforts put in by our committee and hard working members, who give their time freely, our club would not be as friendly and socially active, it gives many people a lot of pleasure, keep up the good work!!!

The Season’s end is nearly here………..

It was decided that the N.H.Y.C. Bay Race on Sunday Sept.20was run as part of "Barts Bash" the biggest yacht race in theworld. It is raced in memory of yachtsman Andrew "Bart"Simpson who died while training for the Americas Cup twoyears ago. All entry fees for the race go to the promotion ofsailing for young people who are not in a position to affordthe sport.

The race started at 12.30 at Poole head. Taking part were"Lazy Jacks" "Stitches" "Admiral Thomas" "Margherita""Karenzi" "Briffin" "Mystique" "Avocet" and an intrepid KevinFry in a Hobie Cat. We all got off to a good start in a fair SWbreeze, and the Hobie Cat disappeared over the horizonfollowed by Lazy Jacks and Karenzi. The rest of the fleetheaded further south east on a long reach. I lost sight ofKevin in the Hobie and Lazy Jacks was first to go about andhead west towards the first mark, Bar Buoy.

Soon the rest of the fleet turned west and followed LazyJacks to the first mark. Admiral Thomas had gone off in awesterly direction and was doing his own thing somewhereoff to my starboard side. Margherita was pushing us all frombehind but sailing well and looking a picture as always.

Heading for the next mark, South Hook, the field spread outand the race took on a familiar feel with Lazy Jacks pulling usall along and Karenzi pushing from the rear. At this point mycrew, Barry Swaffield, and I were deep in conversation, andeating a huge sticky bun each, and we found ourselves goingthe wrong way!

With this rectified, and another mug of tea we rounded thenext mark and headed for East Hook trying to catch an everdisappearing fleet. Sadly Margherita retired around this timefollowed by Avocet leaving seven boats to finish at PooleHead.

We all returned to the club house for the inquest, andamid much barracking and hoo ha, the result was postedby our race organiser Dave Hipkiss, and it was:-

£50 was raised towards the "Barts Bash" fund, and youcan go online to see more about the organisation.

Much fun was had by all, and Dave Stares is still resistingpicking up the last place "Plunger Trophy" for the first ofthe bay races. This could result in a special delivery as weknow where he lives! And no amount of scotch couldpersuade the handicapping this time.

Peter Brown

Enjoying the Bay Race made even better inthat it raised money for a really goodcause.

More from Bart’sBash.

Photos such as thesecould easily beentered for thePhotographicCompetition. Theremust have beenhundreds shotthrough the year. Nowis the time to getthose entries in!

Interested in aDrone?

I don’t know what set up Mike Hojka used for hisaerial photo of the club but it might just have stirredan interest. The quality and advantages of takingphotos from the sky are amazing and drones are inuse all over the place. Before leaping a word ofwarning, there are more and more incidents being

investigated by both thePolice and the CAA. If youbuy one, it’s worth knowingthe rules and even taking theCAA license.

Costs… The drone on the left costs £70 right throughto the 8 motor Drone which costs mega bucks, butwill take a full size DSLR or professional videocameras. They need a good gyro mount in order toget a steady picture and the better ones have GPSwhich will actually fly itself backif you lose contact.Camera… Take a good look atGoPro and others that come in awaterproof form for obviousreasons

Calumity… I wanted to knowwhere Jane is? We’re told Malcolm‘parked’ it here on purpose???

I dislike it,in a way dread it and for me it is only made easy by some special friends. The club have alsocontributed in the way the lift our is organised, these days at Salterns. There is still time to book in andthe more the merrier.

But what then? The boat’s on the hard… or in my case ‘soft’, (so much rain last year the trailer sank in).Obviously there are many jobs to carry out but some can be made just a little easier. Take for instance thechanging of gear box oil on an outboard. Am I the only one to get in a mess trying to squeeze the tube of

oil from the fill hole at the bottom so that you see the oil trickle out of thetop hole. Try this, I used an oil can with a flexible spout. Around the actualnozzle I made a ‘bung’ out of hot melt glue which is simply pressed tight tothe fill hole which makes a seal. Then it’s just a matter of pumping the oilcan. Need to refill the can, get the top plug in andvery little will leak out. Obviously a second pair ofhands will be a great help.

What else can you do during the winter? Well forme, I just cannot sit and watch television. I have to be doing or making somethingand there are so many simple things that can be made. Once it was a radarreflector, then a simple ball and cone set. (I only made the ball.) A throw line, thenlast year a Danbuoy made from a foam filled Coke bottle, and old fishing rod blankand a 2lb bell weight. The fishing section has lead moulds which you can use tomake our fishing leads (with care). Such projects just add to our sport, then look at shop prices and enjoy!

Other things though. Last month we featured Peter Edginton with his painting. I’m sure he would helpwith advice etc. The same goes with photography. There are some competent photographers in the club,we might even get together one evening and share tips. Another thing is writing. Don Small has amazed usall with his archive material. Why not start putting pen to paper with boating or club memories. Articlesabout the club will always be welcome for the newsletter. Submit them to [email protected]

It’s that time of the year again!

Now the season is almost over it istime to look at what is happeningwith club members boats over thewinter period.

With the exception of the deepwatermoorings the mooring fees paid toNorth Haven Yacht Club each yearcover the mooring from 1st April to31st October and any boat still on theClub mooring after the end ofOctober becomes liable for wintermooring charges. Any winter moves are temporary and the boat must be moved back to its permanentmooring by mid-March, ready for the new season.
