Pastor’s Corner
I was glad when they said to me, "Let
us go to the house of the LORD!"
Our feet are standing within your
gates, O Jerusalem. – Psalm 122:1-2
Just 4 days ago my feet were standing within the
gates of the Old City of Jerusalem. Through the
“Palestine of Jesus” course at St. George’s College, I
spent 15 days in the Holy Land and visited sites in Jerusa-
lem, Galilee, Samaria, even the Judean wilderness. We
experienced what our instructor called “the fifth Gospel.”
What is that? It’s the land. The land upon which Jesus
proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God.
The course was a pilgrimage, not a tour of holy
sites. We didn’t just visit places. We read Scripture that
described events that took place where we were standing.
We prayed, we sang, we listened to reflections that con-
sidered this intersection of God’s word with the land.
Very early in the morning on the last full day of the
course, 40 of us followed a wooden cross through the
streets of old Jerusalem, stopping at 14 stations to read
and pray about Jesus’ journey to crucifixion and death.
No one spoke except in prayer. It felt as if the whole
world had suspended its usual commercial bustling and
was holding its breath.

(cont. from page 1)
This pilgrimage was a deeply moving experience, sometimes profoundly com-
forting and just as often deeply unsettling. Landmines dot the landscape around the
Jordan River where John baptized Jesus. The wall dividing Jews from Palestinians
separates Jerusalem from Bethlehem. Tension is constant, peace an unrealized
dream. Jesus’ words still ring true: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, …How often have I de-
sired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings,
and you were not willing!”
Unpacking my suitcase from the trip took minutes. Unpacking the spiritual
effects of this trip is going to take weeks, perhaps months. Thank you, people of St.
Francis’, for this opportunity to be a pilgrim in the Holy Land. I look forward to
sharing the experiences of the trip with you, as we continue our spiritual journeys
together.
Pastor Sally†
Eureka Days Thank You Thank you to all who volunteered at our Eureka Days booth. A special thank
you to Jack Lauless for chairing this event on behalf of St. Francis’.
Our Building Fund is Growing
Even though we haven’t officially launched a capital campaign for our new

both members and non-members of St. Francis’ — a Eureka business owner, and
memorials in honor of Jake Barger.

Pet Blessings at the Lodge – Oct 3
We are holding the pet blessings at the Lodge
this year on Saturday, Oct 3. We thought about having
them on our newly acquired property, but we have nei-
ther access to bathrooms nor an escape from rain there.
So next year we’ll have the blessings at 602 Brewster
Rd.
The pet blessings will be held by the porch of
the Lodge (616 Stockell Dr.) at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on
Saturday, Oct 3.

Consecration Sunday Is Coming
Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a Biblical perspective do
not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills.
Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow
spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church’s mission and
ministry with a percentage of their incomes.
Our congregation’s Finance Committee has selected the New Consecration Sun-
day Stewardship Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of
generous giving in our stewardship education emphasis this year.
New Consecration Sunday is based on the Biblical philosophy of the need of the
giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the
church to receive. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who
should pay dues, we will treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give
unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages people
toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, “What per-
centage of my income is God calling me to give?”
During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, we are asking our attendees
and members to make their financial commitments to our church’s missionary, be-
nevolent, and educational ministries in this community and around the world.
Every attendee and member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so
voluntarily by attending morning worship on Consecration Sunday. We urge people
to attend who feel strongly opposed to completing a card. The procedure is done in
such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill
out a card.
We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning
worship our guest leader will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration,
climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship.
We will encourage participation in Consecration Sunday events through the Con-
secration Sunday team and Bishop’s Committee members. Since we will make no
follow-up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to
inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday worship.
Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday
events.

Earthy Soul
?? Throwing in the Trowel??
Lately I have been thinking a lot about perceptions, about balance and about per-
spective in my life and in our common life as well. In June, I was so hopeful and so
proud about the gardens I was/ we were working
in. I had visions of abundant flowers and herbs in
my own yard; of a small but perfect instance of
green and floral growth on South Central that
would let all of Eureka know St. Francis’ cares for
creation; of a small but fruitful vegetable bed in
our community garden that would bring enough
yummy tomatoes and peppers to feed the clients of
the food pantry and feed ourselves, too.
Those three gardens started out well enough, on
clear trajectories to grow the vision into reality. Yeah, well, the visions are not a re-
ality today. All three of the gardens, frankly, are looking wretched. And I’ve been
feeling wretched. It must be All My Fault. I had to squash that kind of thinking!!
I think I’ve gained an understanding of what happened and why. Now I’m trying
to look at our gardens from a long-term perspec-
tive, and to look at the balance of success and
failure in our gardening ministries.
How should I attack this problem? To start with,
I, attack, and problem are non-starters. I am just
part of this ministry, not all of it. It is not solely
my concern. Attack is a violent sort of a word im-
plying that we are at war with the gardens. And finally, this unrealized vision may be
a challenge, and not be a problem. It may be a clear indicator that we need to move
on from the gardening ministry to something more effort-efficient. Or it may be
that, for a variety of reasons not likely to come together again for a while, 2015 was
a bad year for our gardens. But the decision to throw in the trowel or to regroup for
next season is not mine. It is ours.
I know now how to pray on this, how to convene the gardeners for their thoughts,
how to discuss the issue and plan with whoever needs to consult on this.
And I’m wondering…. can St. Francis’, by its process or its products, reflect the
kind of collaborative work that the world’s communities are doing and need to do
to garden the globe?

Recipe of the Month
Autumn Root Vegetable Gratin with Herbs and Cheese
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups whole milk
2 cloves garlic
Pinch freshly grated nutmeg
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
3/4 pound butternut squash
3/4 pound white potatoes
1/2 pound parsnips
Salt and pepper
1/4 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves
1/4 teaspoon finely chopped fresh rosemary
1 cup grated Gruyère
1 cup grated Pecorino
Directions:
1. Heat the oven to 400° F. Put the milk in a small heavy saucepan and peel and
smash one of the garlic cloves. Add it to the milk and then heat the milk over low
heat until it just starts to bubble at the edges. Remove from the heat, add the nutmeg
and let steep while you continue with the recipe.
2. Peel the second garlic clove, cut it in half and rub the cut side around the inside of
a 6-cup baking dish no more than 2 inches deep. Rub 1 tablespoon of the oil all over
the inside of the dish.
3. Peel the squash, potatoes and parsnips and cut them into very thin slices (1/8-inch
thick). If you have a mandoline, now's the time to use it.
4. Layer the vegetables into the baking dish, alternating between squash, potato and
parsnip, and fanning them into concentric, overlapping circles. Season generously
with salt and pepper and sprinkle a third of the cheese and a third of the chopped
herbs over the slices. Repeat twice, making the top layer as neat and tidy as you can.
5. Remove the garlic clove from the hot milk and pour the milk evenly over the
vegetables. Drizzle the remaining olive oil over the top of the gratin and bake for
about 50 minutes, until the top is browned and bubbly and the vegetables yield easily
when you poke them with a sharp knife. If the vegetables are tender but the top isn't
as brown as you'd like, turn on the broiler for a couple of minutes -- watch it care-
fully so it doesn't burn! Let the gratin cool for at least 5 minutes before serving.

St. Francis’ Episcopal Church
Bishop’s Committee Minutes, August 16, 2015
Members present: Joe O’Reilly; Kevin Broom, senior warden; Rebecca
Barger, deacon; Sylvia Ahmad; Donna Bernert; Sally Weaver, vicar; Sally
Hader; Suzanne Jones, treasurer; Jack Lauless; Jackie Selle, clerk.
Opening Business
Joe O’Reilly opened with prayer
Joys and concerns; temperature check
Joe O’Reilly moved and Donna seconded that we accept the minutes from the
July meeting. The motion passed.
Treasurer’s Report:
The finance committee met and reviewed the 2015 budget. We still seem to be
behind in terms of pledges. It appears that we will end the year in the black, but it
does not appear that we will meet our pledge income goal. Suzanne indicated that
the stewardship committee will encourage people to pledge realistically for next
year.
Kevin recommended that we develop some guidelines for the finance commit-
tee and the upcoming stewardship campaign so that as we begin our capital cam-
paign we have a clear sense of where we are financially, our financial challenges,
and a plan for addressing them. Joe O’Reilly moved and Donna Bernert seconded
that we approve the June and July treasurer’s reports subject to auditor approval.
The motion passed.
Vicar’s Report
Sally reported that the farm clean-up is nearly complete on the new property.
We hope to close on the property by the end of the month. The seller has requested
that she be allowed to remain on the property for up to 45 days after closing.
We are working on finding someone to mow the property.
Signs will be posted on the property indicating that it is the future home of St.
Francis’ Episcopal Church. We will be featured in the next Eureka newsletter.
On Oct. 3 we will host the pet blessing on the new property. When we do the
actual groundbreaking we will have a formal ceremony and dedication with par-
ticipants from the diocese and community.
The executive committee will be speaking with representatives from two differ-
ent companies about the capital campaign. One is local and will address the execu-
tive committee.
Sally spoke with Glen Trematore of Church Development Services this week
about doing a consulting visit about church development. Prior to his visit he
would review the guidelines for building in St. Louis County and the building site.
He will present on the process of moving from concept to building and how to
(Continued on pg. 21)

(Continued from pg. 20)
avoid common errors in that process, in addition to calculating the total cost of the
building project. Kevin moved that we allocate up to $1500 for this consultation. Joe
O’Reilly seconded the motion.
Deacon Rebecca will be on vacation for two Sundays and then Sally will be gone
for three Sundays after that.
Wardens’ Reports:
Kevin had nothing additional to share.
Closing Business:
Our next meeting is on September 27.
Temperature check; closing prayer led by Sally Weaver.

Book Group Meets November 12 The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman
"After four harrowing years on the Western
Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and
takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock,
nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this
isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a
season, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife,
Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one
stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on
the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a
dead man and a living baby.
Tom, who keeps meticulous records and
whose moral principles have withstood a horrific
war, wants to report the man and infant immedi-
ately. But Isabel insists the baby is a “gift from
God,” and against Tom’s judgment, they claim her
as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two,
Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are re-
minded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of
them." (www.amazon.com)
