Ms. Laura

Says Goodbye

Dear 4-H members, parents, volunteers, and community members: I have truly enjoyed revolutionizing the St. Martin Parish 4-H program into one of the best in the state. I was able to use my creativity to produce engaging programs for not only 4-H members, but the community as a whole. I'm very proud of the work I have done while working in St. Martin Parish. I have accepted a position in Mississippi where I will focus on my passions of healthy living, consumer science, and child development. Good luck to all of the youth in the program. Remember you get what you put into your 4-H experience. Make the best better! Ms. Laura

Meet … Olivia Orange In Florida, Olivia Orange grows on evergreen trees. Oranges can be grown anywhere that is warm. Florida produces the most oranges in the United States. How did oranges get to our country? Christopher Columbus brought the first orange seeds to the New World in 1493. Oranges grow on evergreen trees. It takes 5-7 years for the trees to grow edible fruit to enjoy. The trees mature in 27-30 years. Seeds need certain things to grow. Let’s learn about the seed life cycle to understand the process of oranges growing. Germination is the process where seeds begin to sprout or grow. There are four things that seeds need to germinate: Air, Soil, Water, and Sunlight. When oranges get these four things, we can enjoy the fruit. Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, which helps fight infections and heal cuts, bruises, and scrapes. From: Garden Heroes Activities, LearningZoneXpress
