I was listening to a repeat broadcast of Live on 4 while drafting this foreword.

‘Hey! Who’s that soloist?’ I thought to myself. ‘This style of interpreting Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto is rarely heard today. I like the bold use of portamento, masterful treatment of space, subtle changes in pulse, dynamics and tone colour….’ The applause came and all was revealed. It was Anne-Sophie Mutter with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Riccardo Muti. The concert was part of this year’s Salzburg Festival recorded in mid-August.

The joy of listening to a concert recorded live is incomparable. It is as though you are there, inside the concert hall, the recording is usually little edited, and the presence of an audience is a stimulus to the performers, making it a truly spontaneous experience. I’m pleased to announce that more live recordings from this year’s Salzburg Festival are coming to this month’s Live on 4 on Thursdays.

In addition to live concerts from overseas, this month Radio 4 is proud to present recordings of performances from the LCSD’s current ‘Great Music’ series.

Vienna Boys’ Choir with conductor Jimmy Chiang, Singapore Chinese Orchestra with conductor Tsung Yeh, and the duo of tenor Ian Bostridge and guitarist Xuefei Yang will appear in Hong Kong in October. Our cover story has interviews of these artists so that we may know more about their artistry. This special Friday series of Live on 4 will be kicked off by the iconic master pianist Nelson Freire who gave his amazing Hong Kong debut recital early last month.

More live music-making will come from Poland as spotlights fall on this year’s International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. From now till the end of November, every Tuesday evening at 8pm, you can immerse yourself in the Competition’s spirit. There will be a two-part documentary on the mega event, in between six weeks of starlit performances, straight from Warsaw.

Finally, it’s a special month for Music of Friends. Not long ago the piano in Studio One was moved to Studio Two, which made it possible for pianists to come in to record piano duos. From 4 October, for five consecutive Sunday evenings, you can listen to works for two pianos. Find out more in ‘Programme Highlights’. You may like to know that one of the programmes involves eight hands!!

落筆寫今期「掌台人隨筆」之際,收音機正重播「第四台音樂會」。

「那位獨奏者是誰?」我問自己︰「今天已鮮有這種演繹柴可夫斯基小提琴協奏曲的手法。我喜歡當中仔細的節奏、強弱和音色變化、果敢的滑奏、空間的處理⋯⋯」掌聲響起,我的疑團亦解開,她是安蘇菲‧慕達,同台演出還有慕迪指揮維也納愛樂樂團。這是今年8月份薩爾茲堡音樂節其中一場亮點演出。

收聽音樂會現場錄音的感受實在無可比擬。你好像置身音樂廳中,錄音一般沒有太大修剪。由於有現場觀眾,演出者通常會更加投入。10月份逢星期四晚的第四台音樂會有更多來自今年薩爾茲堡音樂節的演出,對我來說,這是多麼令人雀躍的消息啊﹗

除了海外的現場錄音外,本月第四台更為你播放由康文署主辦的「音樂盛會」其中幾場精彩演出。由曾智斌指揮的維也納兒童合唱團、葉聰帶領的新加坡華樂團,男高音歌唱家博斯烈茲和結他演奏家楊雪霏將亮相本港舞台。在今期的封面故事,我們先刊載四個專訪,讓你更認識他們的藝術觸覺。這一系列「第四台音樂會」將於星期五晚播出,打頭炮的是鋼琴大師費艾亞,他於上月在香港的首演,實在叫人難忘。

續談現場音樂會。今年世界各國的目光亦會投向波蘭的國際蕭邦鋼琴大賽。10月至11月,逢星期二晚上8時,你可以安坐家中欣賞兩個與這項國際盛事有關的特輯,還有六場由華沙直送的演出,不容錯過﹗

International Fryderyk Chopin Piano

Competition Inaugural Concerts in Live

on 4 on 6 & 13 October, we hope you can

join us for a two-part documentary on

the Competition entitled Sharing Chopin

on 20 & 27 October presented by Oliver

Chou, featuring historical competition

recordings and recent interviews with

some past Chinese winners.

The 2015 Competition recitals will be

preceded by two inaugural concerts. On

1 October, Martha Argerich and Nelson

Goerner will perform with the Warsaw

Philharmonic under the baton of Jacek

Kaspszyk; and on 2 October, Garrick

Ohlsson with the Warsaw Philharmonic

Men’s Choir and Orchestra under the

baton of Wojciech Rajski. Krzysztof

Penderecki’s Polonaise for Symphony

Orchestra, a work commissioned by the

Fryderyk Chopin Institute especially for the

inauguration of this year’s Competition,

will feature in the 1 October concert.

Prelude to The 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition

The first Competition was held in 1927 with 26 pianists from 8 countries taking part. This year, over 450 applications were

received. 81 pianists were selected from 21 countries, with the most from the host country of Poland (15) followed by China (14).

Inspired by Fou Ts’ong

Fou Ts’ong was the first Chinese pianist to win a prize in the 5th Competition held in 1955. That year, increased demands

were placed on the participants with a more difficult programme than in previous years. Victory went to Polish pianist Adam

Harasiewicz. Vladimir Ashkenazy, who had been leading, performed less strongly at the final stage and ultimately came in

second. Third Prize went to Fou Ts’ong along with the Prize for the Best Performance of Mazurkas. Martha Argerich, winner of

the award for Best Mazurka Performance at the 1965 Chopin Competition, when asked where she had learned to play these

difficult miniatures responded: ‘From recordings of the Chinese pianist Fou Ts’ong!‘

In the 6th Competition in 1960, the audience favourite was

undoubtedly the Mexican pianist Michel Block, who, in the end,

failed to win a prize. Arthur Rubinstein, honorary chair of the jury,

(which was the largest in the Competition’s history), decided to

respond by awarding Block a ‘Hors concours’ prize. Maurizio

Pollini, then 18 years old, took First Prize, and Fourth Prize went

to Li Mingqiang. This was not Li’s first award - he won Third Prize

in the Smetana Competition in Prague (1957) and First Prize in

the Enescu Competition in Bucharest (1958). Li was a juror of the

Chopin Competition in 1995.

The Drama Continued…

The 60s and 70s brought more controversy with Martha Argerich

defeating runner-up Arthur Moreira-Lima. The rivalry between

Argerich and Moreira-Lima stirred huge emotions among the

critics and the public, and not everyone agreed with the jury’s

decisions. In 1975, Krystian Zimerman became the first Pole to

win for twenty years.

In 1980, the 10th Competition was won by the Vietnamese pianist

Dang Thai Son. It is worth emphasising that in the final, Dang Thai

Son was playing with an orchestra for the first time in his life. He

also won three other prizes. Among the competitors not included

among the prize winners was the Yugoslavian, Ivo Pogorelich.

After the third round Martha Argerich (as juror) quit, unable to

reconcile herself to the elimination of Pogorelich.

In the 90s, in two successive competitions, the jury failed to

find anyone among the candidates deserving of first place.

That changed in 2000. That year, many talented pianists from

the Far East appeared on the concert platform of the Warsaw

Philharmonic Concert Hall. The prize for the Best Performance of

a Polonaise went to First Prize winner Yundi Li and to Fourth Prize

winner Chen Sa. In 2010, Chen Sa was awarded the prestigious

Chopin Art Passport by the Polish government in recognition of

her achievement in Chopin’s music during the Chopin bicentennial.

Celebrated for his ‘wondrous colourings of many Chopin recitals’,

(China Daily) Yundi’s latest recording features the complete Chopin

Preludes. He is a juror in this year’s Competition.

The Winner Takes It All

In 2005, the Polish pianist Rafał Blechacz became the most

decorated pianist in the history of the Competition, winning not

only First Prize, but also all the special prizes, as well as the

prize funded by Krystian Zimerman for the Best Performance of a

Sonata, and the Audience Prize. It was this year that Colleen Lee

took sixth place. She became the first Hong Kong pianist to reach

the final round of this prestigious Competition.

Finally, there was more controversy in 2010. Austrian pianist Ingolf

Wunder was among the favourites for the 16th Competition from

the very beginning, but ultimately, came second, a prize shared

with Lithuanian pianist Lukas Geniušas. The jury awarded First

Prize to the Russian pianist Yulianna Avdeeva – the fourth woman

to be crowned winner of the Chopin Competition.

Only time will tell what we can expect from this year’s Competition.

這項著名的鋼琴大賽於1927年首辦,只有來自八個國家共

二十六位樂手參與。今年報名人數超過四百五十人,共有

八十一人入圍。

傅聰是首位得獎的中國鋼琴家。他在1955年的大賽上獲得

第三名以及「馬祖卡最佳演奏獎」。1965年,亞嘉莉殊贏

得同一獎項後,自稱深受傅聰影響。1960年的冠軍由年僅

十八歲的普連尼奪得,第四名是中國鋼琴家李明強。李明

强在1995年更担任國際蕭邦鋼琴大賽的評審哩!

七十至八十年代,傳奇繼續。亞嘉莉殊的獲獎頗具爭議;

齊默曼1975年奪冠,打破波蘭人二十年無緣冠軍的「魔

咒」。1980年,冠軍鄧泰山進入決賽時才首次與樂團合

作。因波哥利殊被擋在決賽門外,評審亞嘉莉殊請辭,以

示憤怒。

李雲迪2000年贏得首獎,結束了比賽頭名空缺十五年的歷

史。另一位中國鋼琴家陳薩亦獲得第四名。2005年,波蘭

鋼琴家布雷查茲不但贏得首獎,更包攬其他特別獎項,成

最大贏家。香港鋼琴家李嘉齡獲得第六名,為香港首奪殊

榮。2010年的冠軍爭奪同樣激烈。最終,俄羅斯鋼琴家阿

芙蒂耶娃奪冠,成為國際蕭邦鋼琴大賽的歷史上第四位女

適 逢第十七屆國際蕭邦鋼琴大賽在波蘭舉行,第四台在10月20日及27日推出由樂評人周光蓁以英語主持的「分享蕭邦」特輯,節目中會帶來多段珍貴錄音,並有他與前度得獎者的訪談片段。

今屆大賽將由兩場特備音樂會揭幕。10月1日,鋼琴家亞嘉莉殊與高爾拿同台,聯同卡斯帕斯奇指揮華沙愛樂演出。10月2日,鋼琴家奧爾遜與華沙愛樂及男聲合唱團合作,由萊斯奇執棒。此外,10月1日更會演奏由蕭邦協會委約作曲家班特維斯基為交響樂團而寫的波蘭舞曲。第四台分別在10月6日及13日晚上8時,為你帶來這兩場星光熠熠的演出。

Nelson Freire 費艾亞 Last month, we recorded the legendary Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire’s recital. He is

a champion of Chopin’s music, and is a long-time collaborator of Martha Argerich.

Surprisingly, the 70-year-old maestro at the keyboard had not previously played in Hong

Kong until he gave that sensational recital.

Vienna Boys’ Choir 維也納兒童合唱團The Vienna Boys’ Choir (VBC), famed for their angelic and lyrical voices, is also making a

stop in Hong Kong. Boasting Haydn and Schubert as former members, the Choir added

Jimmy Chiang to their membership roll, their first conductor from Hong Kong. Although

the VBC has visited Hong Kong on numerous occasions, this performance is particularly

meaningful as it will be Chiang’s Homecoming Concert!

天使般的歌聲,使人心醉。維也納兒童合唱團歷史悠久,其成員甚至包括海頓和舒伯

特。2013年,他們加添一員 ─ 曾智斌。他是合唱團首位來自香港的指揮。雖然合唱團

Another world-renowned artist making his debut in Hong Kong will

be British tenor Ian Bostridge, famed for his opera performances and

song recitals. He will be teaming up with UK-based Beijing guitarist

Xuefei Yang who is a favourite of Hong Kong’s music lovers.

另一位在港首次演出的名家是英國男高音博斯烈茲,他在歌劇與藝

術歌曲的領域上同樣大放異彩。在這個星級的演出中,有本港樂迷

熟識和愛戴,來自北京、現居英國的結他演奏家楊雪霏同場獻技。

Tsung Yeh is no stranger to the Hong Kong audience. Before taking

the helm at the SCO, he was Music Director of the Hong Kong

Sinfonietta from 1999 to 2002.

新加坡華樂團成立於1997年,可說是一個年青且成就卓越的組

合。他們曾到訪蘇格蘭、匈牙利、中國大陸、台灣和澳門等地,

卻從未踏足香港。除演奏傳統中樂作品外,樂團更努力開拓新視

野,特別是展現具東南亞風貌的作品。指揮家葉聰成為新加坡華

樂團的音樂總監前,曾在1999至2002年擔任香港小交響樂團的

音樂總監,相信本地樂迷對他相當熟識。

Singapore Chinese Orchestra 新加坡華樂團 Established in 1997, Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) is a youthful and accomplished ensemble. They have been invited to

perform in places such as Scotland, Hungary, China, Taiwan, and Macau. Yet, they have not set foot in Hong Kong. While preserving

traditional arts and culture, the Orchestra also explores new compositions and works with a Southeast Asian flavour. Music Director

Vienna Boys’ Choir and conductor Jimmy Chiang 曾智斌與維也納兒童合唱團

The upcoming visit of the Vienna Boys’ Choir will be the choir’s first with

conductor Jimmy Chiang who was born in Hong Kong and has been

living in Vienna for 15 years. In the US, he was a student of the renowned

piano pedagogue Krassimira Jordan. Jordan has regular masterclasses

in Vienna and she brought Chiang with her. Chiang’s goal was to be a

conductor and, since Vienna has produced more than its fair share of

renowned conductors, Chiang decided that it was the right place for him

to study conducting. Chiang sees his work with the Vienna Boys’ Choir as

a summation of his previous training. He also feels that he learns a great

deal by teaching.

A father of two sons, Chiang feels that European children are more

independent and proactive than Hong Kong kids who tend to be less

independent and more passive. His choirboys in Vienna are eager to

respond and feel okay to talk about what is bothering them. This is very

important to Chiang as he believes that to sing properly you have to sing

from the heart. Music from an unsettled heart sounds unsettled. In rehearsal

Chiang is quite a disciplinarian. He attributes that to his own efficient and

methodical teachers. But although he may be very demanding in rehearsal,

on stage, they are equal partners.

Chiang’s sons are aged 6 and 8. Both are studying at the choir’s elementary

school and the elder is expected to join his father’s section soon. Chiang

is keen to cultivate the individuality of his sons, and he notes that this

may sound inconsistent with the aims of a choral conductor. In Chiang’s

view, the coexistence of individuality and unity is not just the challenge of

a choral conductor but also the challenge of a society. One may exercise

his or her freedom, but one must bear in mind that the freedom of others

should not be infringed.

首次帶領維也納兒童合唱團來港的曾智斌在香港出生,於

維也納定居至今十五年。他曾在美國主修鋼琴,老師佐頓

是位鋼琴教育家,定期在維也納舉行大師班,曾智斌亦有

陪同。成為指揮是曾智斌的志願,維也納也曾孕育不少名

指揮,促使曾智斌到維也納深造。教育對於曾智斌是一個

平衡點,教人的同時亦能教導和認識自己。

身為兩子之父,曾智斌留意到歐洲的小孩較獨立主動,香

港的小孩倚賴性較強和較被動。他的團員勇於回答問題和

說出心中感受。他相信唱歌亦是唱出自己的內心,內心不

開放,唱出來也是這樣。曾智斌秉持他老師的嚴厲風格,

有效率、按部就班、學生可以錯但不能重覆犯錯。曾智斌

排練時非常嚴格,然而在台上表演他會視團員為同等的藝

術家。

曾智斌的兩個兒子今年六歲和八歲,就讀於合唱團的附屬

小學,長子即將加入曾智斌的小組。父親很注重培育他們

的獨立個性,這似乎違背合唱團的合作精神,但曾智斌認

為個體和群體如何共存,不單是合唱團,更是社會的運行

準則。行使個人自由的前提,是不能侵害別人的自由。

Tsung Yeh and the Singapore Chinese Orchestra 葉聰與新加坡華樂團

The Singapore Chinese Orchestra will soon be making its Hong Kong debut. At the

helm is their long-serving Music Director Tsung Yeh. Hong Kong music lovers will

surely remember Yeh’s tenure at the Hong Kong Sinfonietta.

Yeh is quick to point out the contribution of the Singapore government in

developing the cultural scene there, including the building of the Esplanade arts

complex and enabling the Singapore Chinese Orchestra to become a professional

ensemble. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong isn’t just the Orchestra’s Patron, he

has also personally contributed 750,000 Singapore Dollars to the Singapore

International Competition for Chinese Orchestral Composition. Although Yeh isn’t

from Singapore, he champions local composers just as he did in Hong Kong and

in the US where he is serving as Music Director of the South Bend Symphony

Orchestra.

Trained as a pianist, Yeh wasn’t acquainted with Chinese music initially. Now he

feels comfortable in both Chinese and Western repertoire, and he treasures his

experience with Chinese music for giving him an extra dimension to his music

activity. To Yeh, the conducting technique for Chinese and Western music is

essentially the same. But when rehearsing a Chinese orchestra a conductor has to

consider the fact that Chinese instruments are stronger in character. It is more of a

challenge to blend them into a harmonic whole.

Another difference lies in the nuances of Chinese music, and not just how these

may be different from those of Western music. There are many different schools of

Chinese music. Traditional Cantonese music, for example, is different from Beijing

opera. Still, Yeh acknowledges that his training in Western classical music has been

of great help in shaping a Chinese orchestra into a harmonious and flexible unit.

Orchestra members are not only from Singapore but also, increasingly from China

and Taiwan. Following the recent appointment of Hong Kong sheng player Cheng

Ho-kwan Kevin, Yeh hopes that more players from Hong Kong will join their ranks

in future.

跟香港有深厚感情的葉聰,將帶領新加坡華樂團首

度來港。他特別感謝新加坡政府對藝術的支持,包

括興建濱海藝術中心,以及撥款讓新加坡華樂團職

業化。李顯龍總理不單是樂團的贊助人,還個人出

資七十五萬坡幣資助主辦新加坡國際華樂作曲大

賽,支持創作帶有南洋特色的新作品。葉聰雖然不

是當地人,但也像過去在香港和現時在美國出任南

灣交響樂團音樂總監一樣,全力支持本地作曲家。

葉聰學習鋼琴,中樂本來不是其專門。他喜歡指揮

西樂和中樂,中樂能給他一種特別的空間。即使在

技巧上,指揮中西樂並無區別,但中國樂器的個性

較強,指揮要將不同樂器融合,排練時要花相當的

工夫。另外,不同的中樂有不同的韻味,例如廣東

音樂和京劇就有不同的味道。然而葉聰認為西樂的

訓練對他指揮中樂有很大幫助,讓他知道如何把不

同樂器帶到融和及富彈性的境地。

新加坡華樂團團員以當地人為主,也有來自中國大

陸和台灣的樂手,最近亦招聘了香港土生土長的笙

演奏家鄭浩筠。葉聰期望日後有更多香港樂手加入

樂團。

A frequent visitor to Asia, tenor Ian Bostridge is delighted to be coming to China with Beijing guitarist

Xuefei Yang. For the Britten centenary the two collaborated in a recording of Songs from the Chinese.

It will be included in their joint recital programme in Hong Kong, as will Stephen Goss’ Book of Songs.

This piece, like the Britten, was written for the unusual combination of tenor and guitar.

Bostridge is aware of the fact that Britten frequently wrote his pieces with specific performers in mind, but

that not every singer can do the same things, despite belonging to the same vocal type. Audiences, on the

other hand, tend to look for consistency between performances by different artists and can be disappointed.

For Bostridge, though, it makes perfect sense to find your own way around a piece that has been tailor-made for another artist.

As a noted Britten interpreter, Bostridge surely acknowledges the influence of tenor Peter Pears, who inspired many of Britten’s pieces for

tenor voice. Yet when Bostridge first performed Songs from the Chinese as a student he didn’t listen to Pears’ recording as he and his guitarist

partner weren’t even aware of its existence. It was actually Pears’ recording of The Holy Sonnets of John Donne that first made an impact

on the young Bostridge. Bostridge took Pears’ Britten recordings as an important reference when learning those pieces. In recent years,

however, he has put them behind him and approaches the music in terms of his own technique and feelings as to how to bring out the music

and poetry.

博斯烈茲和楊雪霏曾於2013年,即是在布烈頓百歲誕辰紀念時,合作灌錄布氏的《中國歌曲集》。當時他們同屬一間唱片和經理人公司,

合作順理成章。這套歌曲集相信會是他們在香港演出的重點曲目,音樂會還會多演一首同樣以男高音配結他的作品 ─ 高斯的《詩經》。

博斯烈茲留意到布烈頓有不少作品都是為表演者度身訂造。他從歌唱家的角度指出,聽眾通常以為所有歌唱家都做到相同的事,但事實不

然,所以作曲家就個別演出者的長短來譜曲是有其依據的。只是他去唱這些為別人而寫的歌曲時,也要想想自己聲音的特性。有弱點不一

定是壞事,因應自己的弱點去調整演繹,是表演者的一大挑戰。

博斯烈茲是知名的布烈頓歌曲的演繹者,原來《中國歌曲集》是他第一套公開演唱的布烈頓作品。男高音皮亞士是布烈頓創作的對象,但

博斯烈茲初唱《中國歌曲集》時卻沒聽過皮亞士的錄音,反而皮亞士灌錄的《鄧恩神聖十四行詩集》令他深深愛上。之後他演唱布烈頓作

品時也有參考皮亞士的錄音,但近年博斯烈茲主要從自己的技巧和感覺出發,去思考如何帶出作品的曲韻及詩意。

Xuefei Yang first met Ian Bostridge backstage after her solo recital at Wigmore Hall, London. Having the same

record company and agency back then, they eventually came together to work on a CD of Britten songs. The

recording was to be done in a small church, but on the day the background noise from strong winds made

that impossible. To her delight, Abbey Road Studios became the alternative location – a place Yang always

wanted to record in. She loves working with singers and to her, Bostridge is a knowledgeable partner and

a very nice ‘British gentleman’.

Stephen Goss’ The Book of Songs, commissioned by the duo, is on the programme of their joint recital

in Hong Kong. Yang explains that other than sharing the same instrumentation of Songs from the Chinese

(featured on the Britten CD and in the recital), The Book of Songs also takes its lyrics from ancient Chinese

poetry. According to Yang, the theme of their programme is ‘From Ancient to Modern.’ ‘Ancient’ is represented

by Dowland and Schubert, while Britten, Goss, and Argento are the ‘Modern’.

A considerable part of Yang’s repertoire consists of her own transcriptions. She writes them for various reasons. She may disagree with some

of the fingerings or on other technical issues. Sometimes she just wants to do it her way. Yang always goes back to the original, then makes

her decisions on which details to keep or change. Another driving force to her transcriptions is her Chinese heritage. The guitar isn’t a Chinese

instrument, yet she wants to play Chinese music on it. She’s very happy to have added her arrangement of a Falla piece and the Chinese

traditional song Fisherman’s Song at Eventide to the programme.

Yang believes that one’s beliefs change as one ages. Still, she thinks that people should follow their hearts and do what they love. Just don’t

be too focused on one particular thing as life is rich.

楊雪霏坦言最愛與歌手合作,她眼中的博斯烈茲是位學識淵博的英國紳士,在倫敦威格摩音樂廳後台跟他首次見面。她還記得《中國歌曲

集》的錄音原本在小教堂進行,但因為天氣取消,最後改期於她夢寐以求的艾比路錄音室完成。

在香港演出的《詩經》是他們委約高斯所作,編制和《中國歌曲集》相同,歌詞就是出自中國的《詩經》,呼應了《中國歌曲集》的中國

淵源。楊雪霏指出曲目編排有「從古到今」的脈絡 ─ 杜蘭特和舒伯特的歌曲代表了古代,布烈頓、高斯、亞根圖代表了現代,加上《中

國歌曲集》和《詩經》以古代詩詞譜曲,體現了「從古到今」的方向。

楊雪霏為結他改編了不少作品,背後有多個原因。其一是她未必同意別人所寫改編曲中的指法或和聲,但無論她自己改編或是演奏別人的

改編曲,也會參考原曲去作出取捨。另一個原因是身為中國人,她很想用結他演奏中國音樂。她在香港的演奏會悉心編排了法雅的樂曲和

《漁舟唱晚》讓樂迷欣賞。

即使她相信人生在不同階段會有不同的人生觀,但她認為人應該隨心而活,做自己真正喜愛的事。不過也不要眼光狹窄,人生其實還有很

多東西值得細味。

4 October: Puccini’s Tosca

Tosca is perhaps the most successful suspense thriller in operatic form ever created, and yet its musical

quality stays on the highest artistic level from beginning to end, never descending to being mere theatrical

effects. With this work, Giacomo Puccini (1858 - 1924) arrived at full maturity and demonstrated his complete

mastery of compositional technique, innovative harmony, evocative orchestration and irresistible melodies.

The composer once again displayed his unfailing instinct for effective music theatre.

The premiere of Tosca in Rome in January 1900 was a sensational success. Puccini’s rich musical invention

provided some 60 specific dramatic motifs that propel the action swiftly on to the climax of each act with

stunning effect. The opera is destined to remain one of Puccini’s most popular works.

The intensely exciting plot is derived from a stage play by the French master-craftsman Victorien Sardou.

The heroine is cruelly victimised by the sadistic police chief Baron Scarpia, who manages to trigger a death

trap for her and her lover before his own death at the hands of Tosca in self-defense.

In our recording, the title role is interpreted by soprano Zinka Milanov; her lover Mario is sung by tenor Jussi

Björling; and the villain Scarpia is portrayed by baritone Leonard Warren. The Rome Opera Orchestra and

Chorus perform under the baton of Erich Leinsdorf.

Béla Bartók (1881 - 1945), a great creative genius of twentieth-century music and a

brilliant virtuoso pianist, completed his only opera, the single-act Duke Bluebeard’s

Castle, in 1911. Based on a French fairy tale retold by Charles Perrault, the libretto

was written by the Hungarian symbolist poet Béla Balázs, who gave the story a

heavy psychological meaning emphasising the protagonist’s desire for unquestioning

devotion from his young bride and his ultimate extreme loneliness. The music reveals

a marked dualism between romantic and impressionistic influences on the one hand,

and the search for a new musical language on the other.

With only two singing characters on stage, the orchestration is varied and complex, at

times achieving a powerful expressive sonority. The work is nowadays regarded as the

greatest masterpiece of Hungarian opera. Our excellent recording has bass-baritone

Siegmund Nimsgern as Bluebeard and mezzo-soprano Tatiana Troyanos as his bride

Judith. The BBC Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Pierre Boulez.

King Roger is an opera in three acts by the Polish composer Karol Szymanowski (1882 - 1937), set to a libretto by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz.

The work was first performed in Warsaw in 1926. Its music is considered to be of the highest quality, with exquisitely coloured and refined

orchestration imbued with evocative harmony and seductive oriental melodies.

18 October: Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte

The final crowning achievement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) for the opera

stage, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) was composed to an inconsistent libretto by the

entrepreneurial impresario Emanuel Schikaneder. Under Mozart’s treatment, the work

became a lively Singspiel full of colourful characters, with amusing scenes alternating

with serious episodes. Its music combines joyous tunes, expressive arias, noble choruses

and ensembles, and includes two tour-de force showpieces for coloratura soprano in the

character of the Queen of the Night. At a deeper level, the opera symbolises the freemasonry

ideal of universal brotherhood.

The first performance in September 1791 in Prague was highly successful. Barely a month

later, however, Mozart’s health collapsed, and he was buried in a mass grave without mourners.

Within just one year. The Magic Flute was given more than a hundred performances.

This extraordinary contemporary opera about a momentous turning point in modern world

history is perhaps the most original operatic composition in the past quarter of a century. It is

a superb collaborative effort initiated by the avant-garde stage director Peter Sellars, bringing

together composer John Adams (born 1947) and writer Alice Goodman.

The opera covers the five days of President Richard Nixon’s visit to Beijing in February 1972,

beginning with Premier Chou En-lai greeting the Nixons on arrival, followed by a meeting with

Chairman Mao, a state banquet, a guided tour for Mrs. Nixon and a ballet performance hosted

by Madam Jiang Qing. The final act concentrates on the inner thoughts and emotions of the

main characters as they retire to bed on the last night of the visit.

The work had its world premiere in Houston in October 1987. It moved to the Brooklyn

Academy of Music two months later. It was during the Brooklyn run of performances that

the opera was recorded under the baton of Edo de Waart, who later took up appointment as

Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic.

Other principal artists include baritone James Maddalena in the role of Richard Nixon, tenor

John Duykers as Mao Tse-tung and baritone Sanford Sylvan as Chou En-lai. Edo de Waart

conducts the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.

The story concerns the enlightenment of the Christian King Roger of Sicily by a young shepherd who represents pagan ideals and whose

identity is revealed to be the Greek deity Dionysus. The Shepherd’s charisma inspires both the King and his young queen Roxane to begin a

new life of devotion.

King Roger is sung by baritone Andrzej Hiolski, the Shepherd by tenor Wiesław Ochman, and Roxane by soprano Barbara Zagórzanka. The

Polish State Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus are conducted by Karol Stryja.

We will offer our listeners a fine recording featuring soprano Margaret Price, tenor Peter Schreier, baritone Mikael Melbye, coloratura Luciana

Serra, and bass Kurt Moll. The Leipzig Radio Chorus and the Staatskapelle Dresden perform under the baton of Sir Colin Davis.

Composers have long been inspired by folk music, or music

from other cultures and lands — think about the Jannisary music

of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, inspired by the Turkish military

who had fought the Austrians for centuries. Chinoiserie was all

the rage in Europe, as evidenced in music in a work such as

Purcell’s Fairy Queen of 1692, with its scene set in a Chinese

garden. Brahms and Dvořák are well known for their Hungarian

and Slavonic Dances, and Dvořák was further influenced by the

folk music he heard in the New World. None of these inspirations

was particularly subject to rigorous study at the time, though. The

formal, academic study of various kinds of musics of the world

began only about 150 years ago. Originally called Comparative

Musicology, the field of Ethnomusicology generated quite a lot

of interest following the 1889 Paris Universal Exposition, where

Claude Debussy was inspired by the gamelan music from Java.

Perhaps more than any other composer, Béla Bartók conducted a

rigorous study and transcription of the music of Eastern Europe,

Asia Minor, and even North Africa. This study was so important to

him that he learned both Turkish and Arabic languages.

Keeping Folk Music’s Integrity

Bartók’s respect for the music he studied was not always matched

by other ethnomusicologists, who routinely ‘Westernised’ the

music they transcribed — forcing pitches into the equal tempered

scale, simplifying rhythms, and even adding traditional classical

harmonisations. In order to rectify some of these discrepancies,

of a half step (the smallest interval of the equal tempered scale)

into 100 parts, allowing ethnomusicologists to discuss tunings

that deviated from the classical norm in a precise language. It is

often said that music is a universal language, and the search for

these universals has been a Holy Grail of ethnomusicology in the

same way the unified field theorem has been for physics — and

both remain equally elusive. Ellis’ research into folk instruments

and traditions across Europe demonstrated conclusively that

there is no universal ideal tuning. The widely held idea that tunings

arise naturally from the physical properties of the overtone series

is only true for a limited number of cultures.

Music with a Sense of Place

Although Ellis died in 1890, the hegemony of Western classical

music lasted well into the 20th century. Musics that deviated from

this ideal were often considered ‘primitive’ and inferior, no matter

how sophisticated. Gradually, however, as ethnomusicologists

began to study not only the music itself, but the place of

music in a society, this sense of superiority has waned, if not

disappeared entirely. With the advent of post-modern thought,

ethnomusicologists have discovered a new humility. Many now

argue that as outsiders to a culture and a tradition, they cannot fully

understand it, nor do they seek to judge it. Instead of attempting

to force some sort of impossible ‘universal truth’ — even the

concept of a tonality itself, although widespread, is not universal

— they act as mere observers, attempting to be as impartial as

they can. Along with this new attitude has come a distancing from

the very word ‘ethnomusicology’, which some believe smacks of

colonialism. In its place has been suggested ‘World Music’ — and

that term itself has been expanded to include all music, including

the music of ‘dead white male’ composers — who unquestionably

have had their own subcultures and traditions.

自香港主修鋼琴的劉永康合作。葉詠媛在維也納完成博士課程後打算四出闖蕩,而

後者則在倫敦修畢鋼琴演奏碩士及藝術商業碩士後,選擇在國際知名拍賣行工作,

但對音樂的熱誠卻未減退。

19/10 兒童合唱的音樂 唐少偉和何崇志都是童聲合唱的推動者。唐少偉當上國際合唱聯盟副主

席,何崇志創作的〈麥兜〉歌曲則唱到家傳户曉。因為多與兒童接觸,

兩人都滿有童心,對生命充滿熱誠。

無法接受,或者把他的作品當作印象主義/表

現主義的音樂來聽。以上都是普遍對史嘉爾亞

賓後期創作的誤解,這一集會建議你以合適的

角度和方法,來欣賞史嘉爾亞賓的音樂。

這一集我會介紹史嘉爾亞賓創作的成熟時期,

同時也是轉折時期的風格。從這時期開始,史

Faubion Bowers, Alexander Scriabin’s biographer. Scriabin was a Russian composer, pianist, and one

of the most innovative and most controversial of the early modern composers. To commemorate the

centenary of his death, Scriabin Unveiled (in Cantonese) hosted by Wu Sheng-chung will be broadcast

every Sunday at 10am.

史嘉爾亞賓的最終創作計劃 ─《神秘》(Mysterium) 更史無前例地結合了所有藝術形式:音樂、舞蹈、色

彩、香氣和文學,融合成一種有末世意義的宗教儀式。通過《神秘》的演出,人類就能得到拯救和昇華。

雖然這些思想並非一般人能明白和接受,而《神秘》這首作品,亦因作曲家在創作高峰期突如其來面臨死

亡而告終。然而,史嘉爾亞賓留給我們的音樂,已經有足夠的啟發性。除開啟了聽者的想像力、豐富音樂

的表現力之外,也引導人追尋靈性的超越和昇華。

今年是俄羅斯作曲家兼鋼琴家史嘉爾亞賓 (Alexander Scriabin, 1872 - 1915) 逝世百週年。史嘉爾

亞賓生於聖誕節,在復活節離世。他是一個傳奇,長期遭到誤解和忽視,同時也受盡爭議,逝世後

卻轉眼被遺忘。「揭開史嘉爾亞賓的神秘面紗」一連四集節目,除了為大家介紹這位個性獨特、原

創性極高的作曲家外,也向史嘉爾亞賓致以最崇高的敬意!

從第二集開始,我們會探索史嘉爾亞賓不同時期

的風格,先會細談他早期的音樂,特別介紹三首

早期鋼琴奏鳴曲的創作歷程。這些作品的思想和

內涵,已續漸轉移到精神的層面上。

第四集 (25/10) 神秘之火

《普羅米修斯》(Prometheus) 可以說是史嘉爾亞

賓創作的另一高峰,標誌著他後期風格的開始,

這部作品結合了聲音和色彩。史嘉爾亞賓的作品

都帶著火一般的不穩定性。火除了象徵著人類的

理性和創造力,也代表重生、轉化和昇華。希臘

神話中的普羅米修斯除了是人類的啟蒙者,也是

叛逆精神的象徵。對史嘉爾亞賓來說,普羅米修

斯(即是他自己)還背負著彌賽亞的使命,到世

間來是要以藝術拯救世界。

The 8th annual Dvořák Prague International Music Festival was held in September. Each year the organiser, the Classical Music Academy, awards the Antonín Dvořák Prize to a lifelong devotee who promotes and popularises Czech classical music. This year, Yo-yo Ma was named the winner of the 2015 Antonín Dvořák Prize, and is the first non-Czech recipient of the prize.

Ma launched this year’s Festival, and performed one of the most celebrated works in cello literature, Dvořák’s Concerto in B minor in the opening concert. He was accompanied by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra under Jiří Bělohlávek, who himself was awarded the Antonín Dvořák Prize last year.

This year, the 17-day Dvořák Prague International Music Festival included a line-up of world-class ensembles including the Philharmonia Orchestra led by Christoph von Dohnányi, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Emerson Quartet, as well as top soloists such as Sabine Meyer, Piotr Anderszewski and David Garrett.

第八屆德伏扎克布拉格國際音樂節於9月舉行。音樂節啟動之先,大會宣佈馬友友為2015年度德伏扎克大獎得主。此獎項由捷克共和國布拉格市文化部的古典音樂學院頒發,以肯定得獎者對推廣捷克音樂的貢獻。馬友友更是首位得到此獎項的非捷克音樂家。

音樂節的揭幕音樂會邀請馬友友擔任嘉賓,所演奏的是大提琴曲目的不朽名作 ─ 德伏扎克的B小調協奏曲。與馬友友同台演奏的是捷克愛樂樂團,而擔任指揮的更是去年德伏扎克大獎得主貝勞拿域。

今年為期十七天的德伏扎克布拉格國際音樂節,亦邀請了多隊世界頂尖樂團,包括杜南意領導的愛樂樂團、聖馬田室樂團、愛瑪遜弦樂四重奏,並有知名演奏家如莎邊娜‧美亞、安德撒夫斯基和加力特等。

In early September, Riccardo Chailly announced his resignation from the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra at the end of the 2015/16 season – four years earlier than expected. Just as the news led to speculations of Chailly’s successor, the ‘Who’s the Leader’ game was over within a week. On 9 September, it was reported that 36-year-old Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons is to take over the Orchestra from 2017 with a five-year contract.

The current Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Nelsons has only recently extended his contract through at least 2022. One may question how he is going to handle both orchestras. Nonetheless, the two orchestras are already planning transatlantic collaborations, taking the advantage of sharing the same director. The Boston Symphony will be performing in Leipzig and the Gewandhaus Orchestra at Symphony Hall in Boston. Joint commissioning programme and educational activities will also be launched.

Nelsons will be the 21st Gewandhauskapellmeister of this historical Orchestra founded in 1781, following the footsteps of numerous great maestros such as Felix Mendelssohn, Bruno Walter, and Kurt Masur.

沙爾於9月初宣佈將於2015/16樂季辭去萊比錫布業大厦樂團總指揮一職,較原定時間提早四年。消息傳出引起樂界對新指揮的猜測,但在短短一星期內已有報導指,現年三十六歲的拉脫維亞指揮尼爾森於2017年起出任新指揮,為期五年。

現時為波士頓交響樂團音樂總監的尼爾森,亦剛續約至2022年。尼爾森雖然要同時兼顧兩大樂團,但樂團表示會把握共享同一指揮的優勢,宣佈跨國合作計劃。波士頓交響樂團將到萊比錫演出,而萊比錫布業大厦樂團則到波士頓舉行音樂會。另外,兩個樂團亦會聯合委約新作品和推出教育計劃。

尼爾遜將成為萊比錫布業大厦樂團第二十一任指揮。這隊歷史悠久的樂團成立於1781年,歷屆指揮包括孟德爾遜、華爾特以及馬素亞。

踏入10月,「樂在神州」會來一個雙翼齊飛,弦絲樂與吹管樂各展姿釆,務求讓樂迷盡享絲竹妙韻。

先談拉弦樂,我們除了聽到閔惠芬和趙寒陽演繹劉天華的二胡曲外,也會讓板胡出場。板胡是從胡琴體系

衍生而流行於北方的一種拉弦樂器,與戲曲的梆子體系劇種關係極為密切。簡單來說,板胡就是各個梆子

劇種的文場領奏樂器;久而久之,板胡不再囿於戲曲而成為獨立的拉弦樂器。大家會在節目中聽到一些取

材自戲曲的板胡樂曲如《秦腔牌子曲》,以及不涉及梆子戲的板胡曲如《月牙五更》。

同樣,京胡既是京劇的領奏樂器,但也可以成為獨立的拉弦樂器。大家可從《夜深沉》和《春夏秋冬》,

細味這件樂器尖亮剛堅的音韻。此外,我們也可以在節目中欣賞由余其偉以高胡領奏的粵樂。

至於彈撥樂,我們當然會繼續享受古箏音樂,只不過,重點會稍為移向南方,尋探潮州箏和客家箏,細味

當中《粉紅蓮》、《福德祠》、《秋芙蓉》等名曲。此外,本月也該輪到中阮和琵琶出場了。大家會聽到

從古琴改編的中阮曲《酒狂》以及衝出傳統樂思的《無所事事》,而琵琶則有浦東派大師林石城和該派傳

人楊帷演繹的名曲。大家亦有機會淺嚐箜篌的樂韻,細聽這種狀似豎琴的樂器所演奏的《湘妃竹》,沉醉

於傳說中舜帝與兩位愛妃的淒美故事。

吹管樂方面,我們會將重點轉到笙、簫、笛、塤。一直以來,笙較少獨當一面,而多數發揮配搭功能。為

了突顯笙的器樂特色,我們將會聽到以笙領奏的《春夏秋冬》、《寒梅傲雪》等,也會聽到塤曲《寒江殘

雪》、《陽關三疊》,細味這種樂器所營造的沉鬱氣氛。當然,節目中豈可少了簫笛音樂?我會與大家分

享《霓裳曲》、《妝台秋思》、《姑蘇行》、《朝元歌》等不同風格的樂曲。

為了有效展示弦樂與吹樂這兩大門類的樂韻,我會在其中兩集節目舉行「弦樂專場」和「吹樂專場」。屆

時大家可以逐一了解這些樂器有何特色。

本月節目結束之前,我亦會邀請大家淺嚐流行於粵東客家地區的漢樂,還有閩南的北管樂,以體驗這些仍

被保留的傳統文化。

everything about classical music’, the Southbank Sinfonia brings together

香港電台弦樂四重奏 ─ 第二度出訪歐洲

繼「法國五月」的演出後,香港電台弦樂四重奏再度與豎琴家

黃士倫合作,在7月底於中環花旗銀行廣場舉行了一場免費音

樂會,演出全套法國作品。

四重奏的成員三年前曾到訪法國,今年又獲得香港經濟貿易辦

事處邀請,於10月中到比利時首都布魯塞爾亮相。他們將與笙

演奏家盧思泓合作,世界首演香港作曲家陳慶恩的新作《廣東

音樂兩首》。之後,他們又會在明年1月份參與香港作曲家聯會

的多媒體音樂會,首演二十首本地作曲家的樂曲。

After their appearance at Le French May Concert in late May, the

RTHK Quartet teamed up again with harpist Ann Huang and repeated

the entire French programme at Citibank Plaza in July.

The Quartet will perform in Brussels later this year and will have

other performances in Hong Kong. At the invitation of the Hong

Kong Economics and Trade Office, the Quartet will give the premiere

of Hong Kong composer Chan Hing-yan’s work Two Pieces of

Cantonese Music in Brussels with sheng player Loo Sze-wang in

mid October. They will also give the premieres of new works written

by local composers in a multi-media concert organised by the Hong

Kong Composers’ Guild in January 2016.
