Sermon Sept 21, 2014
Matthew 20:1-16
Who doesn't like a generous person? Our gospel passage shows us how very how quickly our humanity shows its sinful face. Who doesn't like a generous person - We don't! - if that same generosity isn't being extended to us. Jesus says - hey folks come on in and work. You will get paid a fair wage. Then he says at 9 hey folks come on in and work. You will get paid a fair wage. He does this at noon and at 3 and again at 5pm! Come on in and work. You will get paid a fair wage. The assumption of course being that the early morning workers get the most money and everyone else gets a pro-rated amount based on how much they worked. That would be fair - generous even of Jesus. We can all be ok with that arrangement. But then Jesus goes beyond generosity - he goes too far. He offers the same wage to everyone. The fair daily wage wasn't just given to the early morning worker but to all the workers. What? The scandal! How could he do that? How could he justify that kind of kindness. And what about the hard work of the early

morning workers! Did he not appreciate them enough to give them more than the 5pm workers? Then we might wonder - did Jesus verify the financial needs of the late comers? Did he check their excuses for being late? Because if he had, maybe we could live with his generosity. Maybe they have a sick child. Maybe the worker is ill and can only work for a few hours at a time. Maybe there was an emergency with their neighbor. But what if the latecomers were just lazy. What if they were hungover, indefinitely idle, or carried a false sense of entitlement. What if they didn't feel they had to work for their living like everyone else. What then? We are appalled by Jesus' kindness. By his handout. By his being taken advantage of. Who doesn't like a generous person? We don't. Because so many of us so much of the time have assumed that we are the early morning workers. Or at least, the workers arriving by noon. We have decided so many times that we are being slighted because we receive the same gift as the undeserving one beside us.

We feel we have not been extended the same portion of generosity for our good works. Or maybe we get grumpy with this kind of out of control generosity because we don't feel we are able to be equally generous. Perhaps we feel like we don't have the emotional capacity to give beyond what our brain tells us is reasonable. Or maybe because the world has told us that there are folks deserving of generosity and those who aren't. And those who aren't deserving are those who aren't willing to help themselves. But whatever the reason why our brain tells us Jesus crosses a line we are wrong. Jesus does exactly what we should hope and pray Jesus does for us. While so often we feel like we have worked longer than others and should receive proper compensation for said work, truly we haven't. Because God's time clock doesn't work the same as ours. God wants to pay everyone the same - God's utmost desire is to give everyone an eternal payday. I'd even say God is willing to give that same payout to someone who didn't work at all.

God values us all not because of the work we do or the length of time we work but because we are God's children and God made us. Therefore God is willing to gift us the pay of a faithful laborer despite our good or bad work. Despite our hardened or generous heart. The hardest part about this passage I've decided is realizing we are in need of a handout. Coming to grips with the fact that we are the ones who will receive more than we have earned. That is not the American way. But it is in fact the Christian way. To receive more than we deserve because who could possibly deserve the love of someone willing to die for them. This Bible passage is about radical generosity - about generosity that extends beyond logic and reason and beyond human ability. This is not generosity that we can emulate. It is generosity that we receive but it would be impossible for us as humans to replicate it. So Jesus asks us to work on wrapping our heads around needing it. And then maybe even work on accepting that generosity daily. I just wonder what our lives, our work places, our churches, our families would be like if we all knew how much we need Jesus. If we all

knew all the time with our very beings that we need Jesus' generosity just as much as the next person. If we realized that truth be told all of us started work at 5pm. None of us worked long and hard enough for a day's wage. How might our lives be different? How might our relationship with this very generous man who is our savior be different? I mean really. Who doesn't love a generous person? Thank you to . . . . . . . . . . Thank you to George Trout for organizing movie night this month! Our very own drive in was a big hit!! Additional Thank You to

REDCAP provided a table at the Lewisberry Chili Cook off to distribute information about our services on Sept. 20. We also gave away extra school supply kits at the event. Our location here at Lewisberry Community Center is also used for many other activities which benefit our clients as well as other community members. The WIC (Women Infants and Children) program meets here 2 days a month and the OVR(Office of Vocational Rehabilitation) conducts appointments here for clients in the area. Our Case Management office also meets clients here. This program is for people with multiple issues who may be in danger of homelessness. We are very pleased that our GED program has resumed classes here on Monday and Wednesday evenings and has started out with 8 students on the first night. This program is free and is run by Tri County OIC. Any interested students can stop by on Mondays or Wednesdays at 5:30 to be assessed for the program. Thank you all for your generous contributions to REDCAP and for all the services you provide to the community. We are happy with the cooperation between all the churches, organizations and individuals who work with us to serve the low income families in the area. Please continue to refer anyone who needs help to our agency and call us for information on services which may be available. If we cannot help someone, we will make every effort to refer clients to another agency. We hope you enjoy the fall season and have a safe and happy Holiday season. Our next newsletter will be in 2015. The Staff of REDCAP Mitzi Roth, Director Eileen Rusinko, Intake Worker Dot Hartman, Office Volunteer
