COBDEN DISTRICT PUBLIC SCHOOL OCTOBER 2014 Dear Parents, Staff & Students, Thank you to everyone (students, parents and staff) for all your hard work to help CDPS off to a fantastic start. A huge thank you to our dedicated custodial team (at right) who made our school “sparkle” over the summer months. We have much to be proud of at CDPS. Our Cross Country and Flag Football teams are into the season preparing to represent CDPS with pride. I am impressed with the dedication that our students have shown as they continue to train. After the first cross-country meet, we are celebrating several top ten finishes and a show of sportsmanship that makes us all so very proud. If you haven’t already heard about it...ask a member of cross country team. Our Meet The Teacher Night this year was held on September 17 th . Once again, our halls and classrooms were filled with students proudly displaying their work to their parents/guardians. This is an important eve- ning...one that gives us all a chance to connect early in the school year. Thank you to those who were able to be part of it. Connected to Meet the Teacher Night was our Book Fair, organized once again by Mrs. Jennifer Bell. Students had the opportunity to tour the book fair with their classes and again with their parents. Thanks for supporting your children and our school with this worthwhile event. In September every year, the school is provided the results from the previous year’s EQAO testing. Parents and the students who participated have received their results. We are proud to report that once again, Cobden performed well. We were above the board average for Reading, Writing, and Math in both grade 3 and grade 6 testing. Finally...September 26 th was our day to celebrate the efforts and journey of Terry Fox. It is inspiring to see our students continue to acknowledge Terry’s ef- forts to raise awareness for such a devastating disease. It is inspiring...but not sur- prising. CDPS is just a fantastic school community. Peter Burnette, Principal N E W S L E T T E R Thanks… For supporting the Scholastic Book Fair! We made over $1,100 to put towards books for the library and classroom resources. Our Awesome Custodians! Junior & Senior Kindergarten students get off to a great start for the new school year. EQAO

…A Look at Results Worth Celebrating

Our Grade 3 & 6 students once

again performed well during the EQAO

tests last year. Below is a chart of the

results. The chart shows the percentage

of students who achieved at, or above,

the Provincial Standard.

It is worth noting that our Grade 3 & Grade 6 results are above the Board

average in all areas.

Grade Reading Writing Mathe-

matics

Gr. 3 76% 85% 70%

Gr. 6 85% 76% 52%

Grade 7's are sampling the naturally fermented pickles they prepared as part of their

study of the interactions between living and non-living elements in an ecosystem.

CDPS Staff got wet on

a nice warm day in

early September for a good

cause with the

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge,

helping to raise millions of

dollars around the world.

Here at CDPS,

we raised

$252.20.

Glebe Run Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

A group of CDPS students travelled to Mooney’s Bay, Ottawa to

take part in the “Glebe Gryphons” Cross Country Championship. The

students ran very well throughout the day.

Ryan McIntyre showed amazing sportsmanship when he stopped running to

help a fellow runner who was injured in a fall on the course.

In 2010, September 25th was named Franco-Ontarian Day to officially recognize the contribution of Ontario’s Francophone community to the cultural, historical, social, economic and political life of the province. This year, the Grade 7 & 8 Immersion Classes celebrated by making flags (above), which we then paraded around town. Upon our return, we also indulged in some traditional French foods and culture.

Playground Fun!
