Burnaby Parks… Time to Explore Your Own Backyard! No matter how long you have lived in Burnaby, chances are there are parts of our city that you haven’t yet fully explored. What better time than now to check out our numerous parks that offer something for everyone, and take advantage of viewing the fabulous Fall foliage. Our parks are numerous. With more than 130 parks, Burnaby ranks among Canada’s greenest cities. In fact, 25 per cent of Burnaby is designated as green space! Before the advent of settlers in the late 1800’s, the area now known as Burnaby was a land of tall trees and wilderness. If you have ever wondered why logging dominated the region’s economy for so long, there’s a chance to experience a magnificent coastal rainforest just minutes from Metropolis at Metrotown. Trees! Trees! Trees! Central Park is our ‘centrally’ located 86.4-hectare urban park notable for its immense Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock, Cedar, Poplar and Maple groves. Did you know that Central Park was part of a government reserve set apart for military use by the Royal Engineers in the early 1860s? Founded in 1891, this park has been a part of Burnaby since our 1892 incorporation and it is hard to imagine a Burnaby without it. Central Park is a serene oasis amidst the hectic pace of city living. A network of well-marked trails makes it a great spot for exploring the forest by foot. Geese and ducks flock to the park’s two ponds, and the park is home to a wide variety of other bird species as well. It is not unusual to see eagles in Central Park perched high above in the towering trees. Gardeners can test their knowledge of varietals at the pretty Earl and Jennie Lohn Perennial Garden. The Central Park playground, opened by Prince Charles and the late Diana, Princess of Wales, during their visit in 1986, is an integrated play area that provides fun and challenges for children of all ages. Central Park is also known for its excellent sports and recreation facilities: tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool, horseshoe pitch, a pitch-and-putt golf course and numerous walking trails, - all popular draws. Anchoring the park is Swangard Stadium, host facility for many sporting, cultural, corporate and fundraising events. For those looking to relax and enjoy the outdoors in a garden environment, Burnaby certainly fits the bill. Why not plan an outing and visit a Burnaby park? Central Park is waiting! Be sure to take your camera! ~ by Cheryl Fiddis, a local ‘Burnabian’ Summer Garden Adventures! A few more stories from our members! I observed in my garden that my fireweed plant was trying to bloom, but it was infested with aphids. I tried blasting them off with the hose but they seemed to really stick. Each day I monitored how it was doing, and the fireweed was looking very sad. Enter the ladybug – one morning I went out to find a ladybug had landed on the fireweed flower stem and was munching on the aphids. After a couple of days, the aphids were annihilated, and the fireweed perked up and started to open its flowers. The ladybug moved on to other duties, and the fireweed actually grew more and developed another flower stem. ~ By Janice Bobic ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This summer I visited the world famous Butchart Gardens in Victoria. I hadn't been there for many years, but my dear old dad who just turned 93 wanted to take me. He had some free tickets he had been hanging onto so off we went. I was driving his car; following his instructions we got lost along the way but eventually got to our destination. He pulled out a handicapped parking pass he had for my disabled mother who is now in a care home, and hung it on the mirror. This allowed us to park in the front row of a very large parking lot. He smiled and said "Don't October 2014 Volume 12, Number 8 www.brags.ca

worry, - I'll limp when I get out". I knew he had Mum's walker in the trunk and said we should take it. It gave him some added stability as he won't use a cane, and I didn't feel as if we had used the handicapped pass fraudulently. He was OK with it as long as it didn`t show in the photos I took of him. It was a perfect summer day. We had a lovely tour of the gardens which were so perfect they seemed surreal, and then had a nice lunch afterwards in the restaurant.
