From the Chiefs Desk By: Chief James Trzaski

Cooler weather and shorter days always remind me of Fire Prevention. This year BeaconHose Company No. 1 has been busy putting the show together for this years event. Thewinners of the Coloring Contest will be having breakfast with "Sparky" and getting a ride toschool in a fire truck. During the day we will be visiting the schools followed by our OpenHouse at 6:00pm. Please make an effort to stop by and help on this very rewarding day.

We have been meeting with the Membership Committee and have complied a list ofmembers activities from the previous year. We will be sending out letters to ask members,

that have not made their minimum requirements, what can be done to help them achieve thisthis goal. Our intent is to set a path for each member to meet their required commitment.

Department Physicals and Fit Testing will continue throughout October. If a member hasnot completed their Physical and Fit Test, they will be removed from Active Firefighter Status. If you need to make arrangements for your physical, please contact the Chief's Office.

While meeting with the Finance Board and our Treasurers we have identified the need toincrease fundraising to complete this years activities. Several fundraisers are being plannedincluding a Breakfast, Cow Chip Raffle, Casino Trip and, of course, the Christmas Tree Sales. Please commit some time to "Your Beacon Hose". We are trying to highlight the FUN in

FUN-draisers.Looking at our value statement, the first word that is highlighted is SAFETY. When askedto use a single word to define safety I think of the word "Courage". As emergency responderswe are often times confronted with incidents that require immediate action. Although weneed to respond quickly...there is never an excuse to jeopardize the safety of the public weprotect, our crew members and ourselves. Beacon Hose Company No. 1 prides itself in being acompetent and professional organization. Take responsibility for your actions. Think andoperate safely. So how does the word "Courage" define safety? Have the courage to identifyand stop an unsafe act. If youre in a vehicle and someone is not belted...tell them to buckleup!! If someone is driving too fasttell them to slow down!! Officers cannot be everywhere and

everyone must become an advocate for safety....OUR LIVES DEPEND ON IT!!!Thanks to everyone for your help this past month. Beacon Hose Company No. 1 was

represented at the 2014 State Fireman's Convention and we brought a trophy home!!!Hope to see you around the station.

BHCS MONTHLY SAFETY TIP Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives

Fire Prevention Week occurs annually in October during the week in which October 9 falls, commemoratingthe Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a fire, but they need to be

working. Unfortunately, many home fire deaths result from fires where a smoke alarm is presentbut does not operate. This years Fire Prevention Week theme focuses on motivating people

to test their smoke alarms each month to make sure theyre working properly.

**Having a working smoke alarm in the home cuts the risk of dying in a fire in half.**On average each year, three out of five home fire deaths result in fires where there are either

no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.**In one-quarter (23 percent) of the home fire deaths, smoke alarms were present but did not sound.
