FRONTLINE: League of Denial The NFL’s Concussion CrisisTuesday, October 8 at 9pm

The National Football League, a multibillion-dollar commercial juggernaut, presides over America’s indisputable national pastime. But the NFL is under assault as thousands of former players and a host of scientists claim the league has covered up how football inflicted long-term brain injuries on many players. In a special investigation, FRONTLINE joins prize-winning journalists Steve Fainaru and Mark Fainaru-Wada to reveal the hidden story of the NFL and brain injuries.

POV: 56 UpMonday, October 14 at 10pm

Return to England for the eighth film in a series that’s followed the same group since age seven. It all began 49 years ago when UK-based Granada’s World in Action team interviewed a diverse group of seven-year-old children from all over England, asking them about their lives and their dreams for the future. Michael Apted, a researcher for the original film, has returned to interview the “children” every seven years since. In this latest chapter, more of the original group takes part than ever before.

THE AFRICAN AMERICANS: MANY RIVERS TO CROSS Tuesdays, October 22 - November 26 at 8pm

Presented and written by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the series draws on some of America’s top historians and heretofore untapped primary sources, guiding viewers on an engaging journey across two continents to shed new light on the experience of being African American.

WAR OF THE WORLDS: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Tuesday, October 29 at 9pm

On Sunday, October 30, 1938, the night before Halloween, millions of Americans gathered around their radios and heard a news bulletin about strange explosions on Mars, followed by other reports that led them to believe an alien invasion was in progress. Relive the thrill of Orson Welles’ infamous radio dramatization of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, 75 years after it set off one of the biggest mass hysteria events in U.S. history.

WFIU Fund Drive 2013WFIU’s annual Fund Drive runs from October 25th to November 5th, and we have an array of special Fund Drive programming in store. Here are some highlights.

On the October 25th edition of Afterglow, WFIU Jazz Director David Brent Johnson presents “Bennett, Brubeck and You.” He’ll play selections from a featured Fund Drive CD: a 1962 Washington D.C. concert featuring Tony Bennett and Dave Brubeck.

On Saturday the 26th at 1 p.m., WFIU debuts a special Fund Drive documentary profiling one of the 20th-century’s greatest operatic voices. Tito Gobbi, Master Singer – A Centenary Celebration features interviews with acclaimed singers, conductors, opera managers, and others along with archival recordings of Gobbi himself singing excerpts from operas by Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, and Berg.

For the Sunday, October 27th installment of Harmonia, host Angela Mariani presents “Early Music for All Seasons.” This fundraising edition will explore units of time, and ask you to take some time to support WFIU.

On Monday the 28th at 10 p.m., tune in for a program of music from Indiana organists, in support of the home for organ music on the radio, Pipedreams.

For the Fund Drive edition of Ether Game, what could be more appropriate than a show titled “Dollars and Sense”? Money can’t buy us love, but it can buy us some more Ether Game as we raise support for WFIU’s game show of musical fun and frustration. That’s Tuesday the 29th at 8 p.m.

Find us on:

The first documentary miniseries to examine the dawn of the comic book genre and its powerful legacy also traces the evolution of the characters who leapt from the pages over the last 75 years and their ongoing cultural impact worldwide. The “disposable diversions” were created in large part by the children of immigrants whose fierce loyalty to a new homeland laid the foundation of a multi-billion-dollar industry that became an influential part of our national identity.

Truth, Justice, and the American Way (1938-1958) During the Depression, the popularity of dozens of superhero characters opens the door for a new generation of artists and writers. World War II creates a patriotic fervor for star-spangled adventurers to represent the American spirit at war and on the home front, but in the 1950s, superheroes are caught in the fire of government scrutiny and regulation. With the thrilling new medium of television, America’s first and greatest superhero leads the entire comic book industry to renewed strength. Repeats 10/20 at 1pm.

Great Power, Great Responsibility (1959-1977) In the 1960s, a new breed of superhero emerges, inspired by the age of atomic energy and space

travel and, in turn, inspiring the pop culture and pop artists of the time. Spider-Man, the Hulk and others are the first to have “problems” with which an adult audience can identify, and contemporary social issues make their way into comic books. Black powerhouses appear on the scene, and the pages of “Green Lantern/Green Arrow” explode with relevant storylines as comic books are forced to confront the reality of an increasingly complex world. Repeats 10/27 at 1pm.

A Hero Can Be Anyone (1978-Present)Superheroes are enthusiastically embraced in all forms of media and by all demographics. In 1986, Batman is overhauled as The Dark Knight to reflect the nocturnal underside of his character, and Watchmen brings new sophistication to comic book narratives, illuminating a violent and politicized world. In the new millennium, superheroes have taken over popular culture with feature films, television shows and video games complementing a new generation of web-based comics that bring superhero adventures to every corner of the world. Repeats 11/3 at 1pm.
