This month’s scripture is from Colossians 1:10-12, “That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light”. Patience. Patience according to the bible means, "pleasing God in every way and every good work. Growing in the knowledge of God will give us the strength to have great patience". Patience according to Webster’s dictionary means, “the capacity, habit, or fact of being patient. Patient means bearing pains or trials calmly or without complaint, manifesting forbearance under provocation or strain, and not hasty or impetuous. We live in a society where everyone is always in a hurry. Always rushing. Rushing to work, rushing to school, rushing to church, rushing while driving, just rushing anywhere, and everywhere. Everyone is in a hurry. Try sitting at a green light for longer than 2 seconds and listen to the car horns blow from the drivers behind you. Try standing at the teller’s window and if you don’t move fast enough after your transaction, you’ll have the next customer standing right behind you. Try waiting for a bus and when the door opens in front of you, another passenger pushes to get on first. We are even in a hurry waiting for God’s blessings. Blessings do come. However, blessings come in God’s time. Not ours. We must wait on the Lord. And when we wait on the Lord, then we should have some patience for other things as well. Slow down. Take it easy for a change.

SLEEP ANSWERS FOR TIRED PARENTS AND KIDS

One of the most challenging times of a parent’s life is caring for a newborn. One of the best ways to handle this change is to make sure that the little one and the primary caretakers are getting enough sleep.

“Many parents feel alone in this process of determining how to get their children sleeping well,” said Andrea Elovson, certified sleep coach.

Elovson remembers that when she became a first-time parent, she was very blindsided by the sleep deprivation, and she was worrying about whether her child was getting enough sleep.

She started reading many of the books on proper sleeping, but she found that she was more confused after doing the research. Elovson decided to become a certified sleep coach in 2008, after which she created her own business “Sleepy Bug: Family Sleep Support, LLC,” based in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania.

“When you are suffering from lack of sleep, there is such a need to be able to talk with someone directly to give you a plan to follow,” said Elovson.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for families, and that is where a sleep coach comes in to help.

Elovson points out that some women experience postpartum hormonal fluctuations and that when they have postpartum blues and are overtired at the same time, they may inaccurately view themselves as failures as a mom.

Another problem that women have sometimes is shame associated with the need to take a rest.

“Many women had careers before they had babies, and they were accustomed to being organized and looking good;

that doesn’t translate when you become a mom necessarily,” said Elovson.

When parents lead busy lives, there never seem to be enough hours in the day, and many get their children to bed too late. According to Elovson, up to age 3 years, children should be in bed no later than 7 p.m. Kids in this range need at least 11 hours of sleep.

“Around 7 p.m., the stimulating hormones in a child’s body drop, and the sleep hormones start to rise,” said Elovson. “If sleep doesn’t happen at this time, their body will start pumping out adrenaline and cortisol to keep them going; it’s as if they are on 3–4 cups of espresso,” said Elovson.

If we are already forgiven, then why does Jesus teach us to pray, “Forgive us our debts”?

The very reason you would want your children to do the same. If my children violate one of my standards or disobey a rule, I don’t disown them. I don’t kick them out of the house or tell them to change their last name. But I do expect them to be honest and apologize. And until they do, the tenderness of our relationship will suffer. The nature of the relationship won’t be altered, but the intimacy will.

The same happens in our walk with God.

Confession does not create a relationship with God, it simply nourishes it. If you are a believer, admission of sins does not alter your position before God, but it does enhance your peace with God.

To this end Wednesday nights at Calvary are about to change, instead of Bible Study as usual Wednesday nights are now titled “Focus On The Family Nights”.

At this time we will have a homework corner set up where kids can complete their homework under supervision and may even receive help. The idea is to afford parents a measured mid-week break from the rigorous routine of school-age parenting.

Quick note: this homework help falls under the auspices of our education ministry but we encourage our educators, college students/graduates

Sneak Exercise into Your Daily Routine

To increase your physical activity doesn’t always mean going to the gym. Try putting it into your daily routine. If you do this, you are more likely to keep doing it because you don’t have to go out of your way to exercise. Some tips to improve your physical activity: Park your car at the far end of the aisle and walk. We battle for the closest parking places, but in reality those who get ones far away are getting the biggest prize. At the malls, try entering the mall away from your destination you wish to visit or make a habit of walking the mall before you begin shopping (it’s a good way to check out who is having sales). Take stairs whenever possible particularly if you are going four floors or less. Even if you work on the 60th floor, try climbing a few flights and then taking the elevator just shy of your floor and walk the rest of the way. Hand-deliver messages rather than using the phone, interoffice or e mail. Wash your own car on good days instead of the car wash. Take your dog for a walk. Don’t use the remote control, get up and change the T.V. channel. A fun way of encouragement for you and your coworkers is to have contests with

your coworkers on the most creativity ways of sneaking activity into a daily routine.

Walking

One of the best cardiovascular exercises is walking. It requires little but a pair of good walking shoes. No need to drive to the gym, join an exercise class, buy fancy clothes or expensive equipment and it can be done where ever you are. Take a walk a day and keep the cardiologist away! Walking Shoes

It is important to invest in a good pair of walking shoes since a poorly fitting pair of shoes can cause blisters on your feet. Look for the following in your walking shoes: Shoes that fit snugly on your feet Have a well cushioned heel Have good arch support Have adequate toe room Have flexible slip resistant soles Before you Walk

Don’t immediately charge into a fast walk. Begin by stretching to loosen and warm up your muscles. Also it is a good idea to make the time enjoyable. Pick out your favorite music tape or learn a language while you walk. Also when you can, try walking with a friend. Start Slowly Don’t overdo on you first day you’ll regret it by the next day. It will also keep you from staying with your exercise. Start off very slowly and gradually increase your pace. Begin by walking at 105 steps per minute and slowly increase your pace to 114 steps per minute for 20 30 minutes. Then slow your pace back down to 105 steps per minute to cool down for about five minutes.

FARMERS MARKET

NUTRITION PROGRAM

Low income Pennsylvanians can now apply for vouchers to purchase local produce at farmers markets and farm stands across the state through the Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP).

Eligible older adults and WIC participants can use four $5 vouchers to buy fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables at qualified farm market stands through the $7 million state and federal program. The funds cannot be used on processed foods like jams, honey, nuts, cider or baked goods, or on citrus or tropical fruits.

“Our farmers produce an abundance of fresh, local produce,” Agriculture Secretary George Greig said. “The Farmers Market Nutrition Program gives all Pennsylvanians the opportunity to enjoy this bounty while supporting local farmers.”

“I encourage anyone eligible for the program to take advantage of it and enjoy a taste of Pennsylvania this summer,” Greig said.

Pennsylvania is one of only a few states that provide state funding in addition to federal grants for the program. As a result, all of Pennsylvania is covered by the program.

To qualify for the program, individuals must be 60 or older by December 31, 2013, with a total household income before taxes of less than $21,257 for a single person and $28,694 for two people.

A second program, the WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program, provides vouchers to WIC recipients. The WIC program provides supplemental foods, health care referrals and nutrition education to low-income pregnant and postpartum women, and to infants and children, up to age five, who are found to be nutritionally at-risk. Eligibility for this program is determined through local WIC agencies.

Statewide, 207 farmers markets and 897 roadside farm stands participate in the Farmers Market Nutrition Program; which operates from June 1 to November 30.

Residents should contact their local Area Agency on Aging or WIC agency for additional information, including locations, dates and times of voucher distributions. Vouchers are offered on a first come, first served basis.

Marriage advice I wish I would have had:

Obviously, I’m not a relationship expert. But there’s something about my divorce being finalized this week that gives me perspective of things I wish I would have done different… After losing a woman that I loved, and a marriage of almost 16 years, here’s the advice I wish I would have had…

1) NEVER STOP COURTING. Never stop dating. NEVER EVER take that woman for granted. When you asked her to marry you, you promised to be that man that would OWN HER HEART and to fiercely protect it. This is the most important and sacred treasure you will ever be entrusted with. SHE CHOSE YOU. Never forget that, and NEVER GET LAZY in your love.

2) PROTECT YOUR OWN HEART. Just as you committed to being the protector of her heart, you must guard your own with the same vigilance. Love yourself fully, love the world openly, but there is a special place in your heart where no one must enter except for your wife. Keep that space always ready to receive her and invite her in, and refuse to let anyone or anything else enter there.

3) FALL IN LOVE OVER and OVER and OVER again. You will constantly change. You’re not the same people you were when you got married, and in five years you will not be the same person you are today. Change will come, and in that you have to re-choose each other everyday. SHE DOESN’T HAVE TO STAY WITH YOU, and if you don’t take care of her heart, she may give that heart to someone else or seal you out completely, and you may never be able to get it back. Always fight to win her love just as you did when you were courting her.

4) ALWAYS SEE THE BEST in her. Focus only on what you love. What you focus on will expand. If you focus on what bugs you, all you will see is reasons to be bugged. If you focus on what you love, you can’t help but be consumed by love. Focus to the point where you can no longer see anything but love, and you know without a doubt that you are the luckiest man on earth to be have this woman as your wife.

5) IT’S NOT YOUR JOB TO CHANGE OR FIX HER… your job is to love her as she is with no expectation of her ever changing. And if she changes, love what she becomes, whether it’s what you wanted or not.

6) TAKE FULL ACCOUNTABILITY for your own emotions: It’s not your wife’s job to make you happy, and she CAN’T make you sad. You are responsible for finding your own happiness, and through that your joy will spill over into your relationship and your love.

7) NEVER BLAME YOUR WIFE IF YOU GET FRUSTRATED OR ANGRY AT HER, it is only because it is triggering something inside of YOU. They are YOUR emotions, and your responsibility. When you feel those feelings take time to get present and to look within and understand what it is inside of YOU that is asking to be healed. You were attracted to this woman because she was the person best suited to trigger all of your childhood wounds in the most painful way so that you could heal them… when you heal yourself, you will no longer be triggered by her, and you will wonder why you ever were.

Gwen couldn’t help remembering how her grandmother used to tell her to, “Act like a perfect little lady.” She had hated to have her grandmother constantly nagging at her to sit properly, speak properly, walk, chew, and sneeze properly. However, the lessons she had been taught had stayed with her, and they had helped her many times. She had gotten the job at the gallery because they had been impressed by her manner and poise. Perhaps she wasn’t a “perfect little lady,” but she made a good showing, nonetheless.

Our behavior is important. People see us in many situations at many different times, and the way we act can be a powerful witness to the power of Christ in our lives. Christ calls us to a perfection that we cannot achieve on our own. Rely upon the Lord, and He will give you the capacity to live an upright, holy, and pleasing life.

PRAYER: Lord, You are the author of perfection. You have created me to be an example of Your image, a light of the world. Fill me with the brilliance of Your holy light, that I might shine forth in beauty and power. Amen.

A WELL-PLANNED RETIREMENTFrom The London Times:

Outside England’s Bristol Zoo there is a parking lot for 150 cars and 8 buses. For 25 years, its parking fees were managed by a very pleasant attendant.....The fees for cars ($1.40), for buses (about $7).

Then, one day, after 25 solid years of never missing a day of work, he just didn’t show up; so the zoo management called the city council and asked it to send them another parking agent. The council did some research and replied that the parking lot was the zoo’s own responsibility. The zoo advised the council that the attendant was a city employee.

The city council responded that the lot attendant had never been on the city payroll.

Meanwhile, sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain, or France, or Italy, is a man who’d apparently had a ticket booth installed completely on his own and then had simply begun to show up every day, commencing to collect and keep the parking fees, estimated at about $560 per day -- for 25 years. Assuming 7 days a week, this amounts to just over $7 million dollars ......and no one even knows his name.

The church at Pergamum was praised by Jesus, the risen Lord. Yet, He also had a few things against His followers there, namely, some of their beliefs.

They had fallen prey to some unbiblical teachings of certain semi-Christian groups. And Jesus would have nothing to do with them.

Unless the Christians of Pergamum turned away from the false and harmful doctrines, He said He would come to fight against the falsehoods. And His words-the truth, the Word of God-would cut like a sword.

Jesus expects His children to know the truth-the truth that will set us free. And when we meander from it, willfully or ignorantly, He cares about our straying. In fact, He’s willing to take action to prevent it.

Jesus is concerned about what you know and believe. How well do you know the truth? How well are you living it?

EXCERPTS FROM...ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS A LAND

WHERE THINGS WORKEDOnce there was something called a paper bag. In some parts of the country it was called a sack, but whatever it was called, it worked. Groceries were put in it and, when emptied at home, it could be used to start fires in the fireplace or as a garbage bag.

Then someone invented the plastic bag. It cannot be burned since the fumes cause chipmunks in the woods to fall over and die. It’s too small to be used as a garbage bag, and full of groceries, it topples over in the trunk of a car. This is called progress.

Once there was an airline industry. Its rates and routes were regulated by the government, but service was good and there was such a thing as a nonstop flight. Then someone invented a better airline system. For almost a week, airfares dropped. So too did maintenance, and service remained the same.

Then the airlines abolished most nonstop flights. Now, to get to almost anywhere, you have to change planes in Atlanta. This is called progress.

Once there was something called a street address and mail came to that location in a timely fashion. Then someone invented the ZIP code and insisted that it be added to the street address. Now mail that once took a day to reach its destination takes a week and very often includes a notice that a check you mailed a week before never arrived. This is called progress.

Once there was a rule. It was “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Then someone decided that the rule was silly, and so all sorts of things that worked perfectly well were fixed so that they don’t work well anymore. This is now called progress. It used to be called stupidity.

While you certainly don’t want to be a pushover -- and “flexible” shouldn’t define your salary negotiation -- show your potential employer that you’re interested in results that work for everyone.

The Company’s Own WordsBefore your interview, become familiar with the company’s website and literature. Pay attention to the words used -- what’s important to the organization?

“In your interview, hit key words that appeared on the company website or brochure,” says Olivia Ford of Adeptio. “These key words might include team, leadership, simplistic, culture or growth.”

Mixing these keywords into your answers can provide a subtle hint that you are plugged in to what the organization is looking for.

“That’s a Good Question.”Use this phrase instead of blurting out “I don’t know” if the interviewer stumps you with a surprise question. It can give you a few moments to come up with an answer and, in the meantime, strokes the interviewer’s ego a little bit too.

Avoid the “I don’t know” answer when possible, but of course don’t lie about your experience or training.

Reasons You Want the Job.Knowing a job prospect’s motivations is important for managers who are hiring.

During your interview, talk about how this position fits into your future plans and the ideas you have about your career, how it fits with your values, and what you would like to learn from it. Talk about how you see yourself in relation to the company and what you believe you can bring to the position.

These kinds of thoughts show who you are as a person, and go a long way toward giving the hiring manager an idea about how you might fit in the company’s culture and values.

DON’T BE DISCOURAGED

Have you ever tried really hard to change, but failed? Have you tried to see change in others; or, maybe to help that change occur; but, saw no results? Expecting change but seeing nothing can be extremely frustrating.

Did you know that a Begonia will germinate in as little as two days? However, if you’ve planted Evening Primrose, you’ll have to watch for up to 30 days to see the first sprout. A mouse can have a mischief of pups in 19 days but you’ll have to wait 645 days to see an Asian Elephant calf. Sometimes change can be seen quickly; but, other changes may take much longer to become visible.

Have you ever tried really hard to help someone find the way to Jesus but they just wouldn’t budge? I’ve been talking to a friend and praying for him for years; but, he seems to be further from the Lord now than before. Or, so it seems to me.

The Lord said, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways.” (Isaiah 55:8) Rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return without watering the earth so that it flourishes and yields fruit. The Word of the Lord also does not return to Him empty, but will accomplish what He desires and achieve the purposes for which He sent it. (Isaiah 55:8-11)

Sometimes it’s better to be patient and wait on God than to be a warrior. (Proverbs 16:32) Be zealous and keep your spiritual fervor; however, stay joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer. (Romans 12:11-12) Continue to warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, and help the weak; but, be patient with everyone and kind to each other. (1 Thessalonians 5:14-15)

When you become impatient, remember, “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” (Psalm 27:14)

Father, when we are filled with impatience and hurry, help us to be strong, take heart and wait on You. Help us to remember that just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are Your ways higher than our ways, and Your thoughts than our thoughts. Father, in the name of Jesus, help us to trust in You and do good; to delight ourselves in You so that Your Spirit will dwell in us and give us peace. Amen

What is Church Etiquette? Webster’s standard dictionary describers Etiquette as rules for socially acceptable behavior. How does that apply to church? There should be order and reverence in God’s House. We welcome God when we pray and conduct ourselves in such a way that invites His presence. When we talk needlessly and walk in the middle of the sermon, we disrespect God. To help maintain respect and order in God’s House. Listed below are a few etiquette suggestions:

Dorothy Jones was born December 11, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Joseph Benjamin and Alberta Williams. Dorothy was educated in the Philadelphia school system.

Dorothy met the love of her life her childhood sweetheart, Edward M. Jones in the Elmwood section of Philadelphia. They married on April 24. 1945. From this union, five children were born: Edward Jr ., Elaine, Joanne, Dorothy, and Carmen. Dorothy was a stay at home Mom. She found joy in raising her children as well as other children.

Mother Dorothy Jones accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at an early age at Galilee Baptist Church. When Bishop R.T. Jones, Sr. organized Christian Tabernacle, she was the first member. She held various leadership positions. Dorothy was a member of the choir and later became its President. She was a Prayer Warrior, President of the Deaconess Board; member of the pastor’s Aides; altar Worker, mother’s Board, Office worker and Church mother.

Along with her parents, Mother Dorothy Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Miller Jones, Sr.; son, Edward Miller Jones, Jr.; Sisters, Mary Wilson, Eleanor Black,

and Lillian Graham; Brothers, Clarence, Albert, Louis, Ernest, and Robert Williams.

She transition from labor to reward on Wednesday, September 4, 2013.

Which of the four authors of the Gospels was a medical doctor? Whose meticulous, methodical writing style gives him away? It was Luke.

This thorough biblical writer handed down parables and details about Jesus’ life that are found nowhere else. For example, Luke sought to convince readers that Jesus Christ came back to life physically after the Crucifixion.

To accomplish this the writer pointed out that the resurrected Savior ate fish with His disciples. This unique bit of evidence emphasizes a physical resurrection.

Luke also wrote the book of Acts as a continuation of his gospel. It chronicles the spread of Christ’s church during the first century. Luke accompanied the apostle Paul through Asia and Macedonia. This book of New Testament history shows how the early Christians struggled not only to spread the Gospel, but to understand how the Gospel applied to their world.

Tradition says that Luke met a martyr’s death, hanged on an olive tree in Greece.

Roosevelt L. Austin was born to Libon and Syleena Austin on May 15, 1925. He was raised in the North Philadelphia section of the city.

He attended and graduated from the Philadelphia School System and entered the military service during World War II. Roosevelt was released from military duty in 1943 with an honorable discharge.

He was a devoted employee of General Electric where he retired after many years of employment. Not feeling ready to completely retire he began his next occupation with the United States Postal Service where he worked for 9 years.

He met the love of his life Jeanie Austin in 1975 where they were joined in marriage together for 37 years.

Roosevelt loved entertaining and family get-togethers. He looked forward each year to his visits to family down south. He was an avid pool player and would enjoy most times with friends in his home playing a game of pool. Roosevelt was most loved for his wit and his outstanding knowledge of world events.

Roosevelt went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 29, 2013.

Roosevelt leaves behind his cherished wife, Jeanie, brothers-in-law, James Holder (Juanita), Kenny Holder (Melissa), Garfield Holder, Anthony Holder, God Daughters, Tina Lewis and Kendra Riddick, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

John E. Dawson Jr. was born July 18, 1949 in Richmond, Virginia to the late John E. Dawson Sr. and Clara Mae Dawson.

As a child John attended the public school system of Philadelphia of which he graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School. He attended some college before deciding to enlist in the United States Navy from August 6, 1968 to August 5, 1974. Here he served his country faithfully before gaining his honorable discharge.

John later met and married Mary Dawson, who preceded him in death. From this union was born Aisha, along with two stepchildren Joy and Dane.

As time went on he met Linda McCray. They would travel constantly to such places as New Orleans, Key West, Tampa, Paradise Island, along with many other places. From this union was born John John III.

John was a connoisseur of jobs. He believed in working hard for what you want. He had many jobs such as shoe-shiner, bag boy, etc. If you named it he probably did it. He worked for Penn Central Transportation, Conrail, Amtrak and Septa of which he retired after 36 years of service.

He enjoyed sports and racing horses (betting). One of his favorite quotes “I’m a betting man!”, along with walks on the beach, bike riding with Linda and fishing.

On Tuesday, August 20, 2013, God saw fit to call John home after 64 years and a fight with cancer. He leaves behind to cherish his memories; his wife Linda; a daughter Aisha (George); son John III; sisters Clare Yvonne Robinson and Debora L. Richardson; brother David Ronald Dawson; grandchildren Ayana, Nashti, and Jayden; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Just prior to his crucifixion, [Jesus] told his disciples that he would be leaving them. “Where I am going you cannot follow now, but you will follow later” (John 13:36 NCV).

Such a statement was bound to stir some questions. Peter spoke for the others and asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now?” (v. 37).

See if Jesus’ reply doesn’t reflect the tenderness of a parent to a child: “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father’s house; I would not tell you this if it were not true. I am going there to prepare a place for you ... I will come back and take you to be with me so that you may be where I am going” (John 14:1-3 NCV)

Reduce the paragraph to a sentence, and it might read: “You do the trusting, and I’ll do the taking.”

POTATO CHIPS

A little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with a bag of potato chips and a six-pack of root beer and started his journey.

When he had gone about three blocks, he met an old man. He was sitting in the park, just staring at some pigeons. The boy sat down next to him and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when

he noticed that the old man looked hungry, so he offered him some chips. He gratefully accepted it and smiled at him.

His smile was so pretty that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered him a root beer. Again, he smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word.

As twilight approached, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave; but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the old man, and gave him a hug. He gave him his biggest smile ever.

When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, “What did you do today that made you so happy?” He replied, “I had lunch with God.” But before his mother could respond, he added, “You know what? He’s got the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen!”

Meanwhile, the old man, also radiant with joy, returned to his home. His son was stunned by the look of peace on his face and he asked, “dad, what did you do today that made you so happy?”

He replied “I ate potato chips in the park with God.” However, before his son responded, he added, “You know, he’s much younger than I expected.”

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime! Embrace all equally!

Allow your woman to JUST BE. When she’s sad or upset, it’s not your job to fix it, it’s your job to HOLD HER and let her know it’s ok. Let her know that you hear her, and that she’s important and that you are that pillar on which she can always lean. The feminine spirit is about change and emotion and like a storm her emotions will roll in and out, and as you remain strong and unjudging she will trust you and open her soul to you… DON’T RUN-AWAY WHEN SHE’S UPSET. Stand present and strong and let her know you aren’t going anywhere. Listen to what she is really saying behind the words and emotion.

9) BE SILLY… don’t take yourself too seriously. Laugh. And make her laugh. Laughter makes everything else easier.

10) FILL HER SOUL EVERYDAY… learn her love languages and the specific ways that she feels important and validated and CHERISHED. Ask her to create a list of 10 THINGS that make her feel loved and memorize those things and make it a priority everyday to make her feel like a queen.

11) BE PRESENT. Give her not only your time, but your focus, your attention and your soul. Do whatever it takes to clear your head so that when you are with her you are fully WITH HER. Treat her as you would your most valuable client. She is.

12) BE WILLING TO PLEASE HER SEXUALLY. Let her melt into your arms so she can trust you fully.

13) DON’T BE AN IDIOT…. And don’t be afraid of being one either. You will make mistakes and so will she. Try not to make too big of mistakes, and learn from the ones you do make. You’re not supposed to be perfect, just try to not be too stupid.

14) GIVE HER SPACE… The woman is so good at giving and giving, and sometimes she will need to be reminded to take time to nurture herself. Sometimes she will need to fly from your branches to go and find what feeds her soul, and if you give her that space she will come back with new songs to sing…. (okay, getting a little too poetic here, but you get the point. Tell her to take time for herself, ESPECIALLY after you have kids. She needs that space to renew and get re-centered, and to find herself after she gets lost in serving you, the kids and the world.)

15) BE VULNERABLE… you don’t have to have it all together. Be willing to share your fears and feelings, and quick to acknowledge your mistakes.

16) BE FULLY TRANSPARENT. If you want to have trust you must be willing to share EVERYTHING… Especially those things you don’t want to share. It takes courage to fully love, to fully open your heart and let her in when you don’t know if she will like what she finds… Part of that courage is allowing her to love you completely, your darkness as well as your light. DROP THE MASK… If you feel like you need to wear a mask around her, and show up perfect all the time, you will never experience the full dimension of what love can be.

17) NEVER STOP GROWING TOGETHER… The stagnant pond breeds malaria, the flowing stream is always fresh and cool. Atrophy is the natural process when you stop working a muscle, just as it is if you stop working on your relationship. Find common goals, dreams and visions to work towards.

18) DON’T WORRY ABOUT MONEY. Money is a game, find ways to work together as a team to win it. It never helps when teammates fight. Figure out ways to leverage both persons strength to win.

19) FORGIVE IMMEDIATELY and focus on the future rather than carrying weight from the past. Don’t let your history hold you hostage. Holding onto past mistakes that either you or she makes, is like a heavy anchor to your marriage and will hold you back. FORGIVENESS IS FREEDOM. Cut the anchor loose and always choose love.

20) ALWAYS CHOOSE LOVE. ALWAYS CHOOSE LOVE. ALWAYS CHOOSE LOVE. In the end, this is the only advice you need. If this is the guiding principle through which all your choices is governed, there is nothing that will threaten the happiness of your marriage. Love will always endure.

In the end MARRIAGE isn’t about Happily ever after. It’s about work. And a commitment to grow together and a willingness to continually invest in creating something that can endure eternity. Through that work, the happiness will come.

Marriage is life, and it will bring ups and downs. Embracing all of the cycles and learning to learn from and love each experience will bring the strength and perspective to keep building, one brick at a time.

These are lessons I learned the hard way. These are lessons I learned too late.

But these are lessons I am learning and committed in carrying forward. Truth is, I LOVED being married, and in time, I will get married again, and when I do, I will build it with a foundation that will endure any storm and any amount of time.

If you are reading this and find wisdom in my pain, share it those those young husbands whose hearts are still full of hope, and with those couples you may know who may have forgotten how to love.

A teenager seeks permission from her parents to attend a rave party for young people her own age. The parents begin by pointing out the obvious dangers of being exposed to such entertainment; they proceed to highlight their obvious concern of promiscuity among young people nowadays and not to forget the dangers of drug abuse. Once they’re done with the lecture, they finally grant consent, reluctantly. I ask you, did the teenager pay any attention to the cautions, and the concerns raised? No, all she wanted to hear was either “yes” or “no”. You see children have what is called “selective hearing,” the ability to tune out an adult’s voice whenever they want. Either they are absorbed in their own activities and do not want to be disturbed, or they do not like what they are hearing so they ignore the voice. The adult is speaking, but you would never know it by the child’s response. Come to think of it, even adults are guilty of the same from time to time.

More importantly, we behave the same way toward our heavenly Father. The Lord speaks to us through the Word today just as He always has. His Word contains the complete revelation of His will and was written by His

chosen people under the anointing of the Holy Spirit. If we are inattentive to the Scriptures, then we have turned away from our major source of hearing from God. But if we open His Word, we will hear how much He loves us, how much He wants to fellowship with us, to express His love to us, and to receive our love in return. However, many of us are like Saul, obsessed with our own plans. We receive a mandate from God that ought to be duly executed. So we set off to comply and fulfill the instructions in stages, beginning with what is easy and then moving to the more pleasant aspect of it all. The “difficult” and “not so pleasant” stuff can wait, or at best be ignored. This is precisely the trap King Saul fell into. After executing what he thought was the more important aspect of the command, he spares the life of king and the beasts, much to the disapproval of God. From Scripture, we receive definite direction for our lives. God knows that the world, our own selfish nature, and Satan’s cry is for us to choose their ways over His.

So what does God use to get our attention? Circumstances. For Paul it was a Damascus road encounter, for Jonah, a great fish, and Pharaoh had to entertain a host of creatures! More often than not, His tool is a restless spirit, which might appear as some vague dissatisfaction with our life. Other times God uses another person’s words to help us recognize that He is speaking to us. In each case, we are to stop and ask, “Lord, are You trying to say something to me?” God sometimes allows our prayers to go unanswered in order to get us to sharpen our focus on Him. Or, He may say no to our request in order to gain our attention. He occasionally allows disappointments, difficulties, and failures for the same reason. If we are wise, we will quickly seek Him out. Let us ensure that we are not guilty of selective hearing.

SLEEP ANSWERS FOR TIRED PARENTS AND KIDS◄Continued From Page Five

Elovson encourages parents if at all possible to extend the age at which the child sleeps in the crib. Lots of parents believe that 2 years old is the time to move them to a toddler bed, but Elovson disagrees.

“Unless your child is climbing out of the crib, leave them there for as long as possible,” said Elovson. “Children ages 2, 3 and early 4’s have very undeveloped impulse control, so it’s best to keep them in the crib to get the best sleep possible,” she said.

Another point that Elovson likes to clarify is that children are early to bed, early to rise; they do not tend to sleep late.“I tell my clients that if your child sleeps until 6 a.m., anything after that is gravy; most kids will be up and raring to go by 6 a.m.,” said Elovson.

Elovson says that she does not see any problems if the children sleep with their caretakers as long as everyone is getting enough sleep.

Elovson thinks also that you can do sleep training and breastfeeding training at the same time. Many moms need to learn whether their babies are waking up hungry during the night or simply going through a lighter sleep pattern. Elovson said that a sleep coach can help parents figure out these answers.

She also points out that many moms hear from their friends how their child slept through the night the second night they brought them home from the hospital. If their own baby isn’t doing that, they feel there is something wrong with them, explained Elovson. One of the biggest things Elovson reminds her clients is that they should not compare themselves with other parents.

According to Elovson, 40 percent of kids simply cannot sleep without some help or coaching.

“Most babies are more sensitive to external and internal factors, and this means nothing about your parenting,” said Elovson.

Another intimidating factor in sleep training is the crying associated with these changes.

“When it gets to that point where it’s affecting their daily lives and they can’t take it anymore, that is when I typically get a call from parents asking for help,” said Elovson.

Elovson suggests not bringing a sleep coach in until a child reaches 6 months of age or older. Before that time, it is too hard to work on behavioral techniques, for patterns are still being established.

Dorothy Ashby (1932-1986): Jazz Harpist, Conductor and ComposerBy Dorothy G. Kapenstein

Jazz is a form of popular music that has been with us since the early years of the twentieth century. Music historians

believe that it began in the black community of New Orleans and spread to other big cities. Some music critics regard this form of music as the ancestor of a number of other kinds of popular music such as swing and bebop. Many people now think of jazz as an art form and it has been worked into symphonic music. When people think about instruments used to play jazz, the classical symphonic harp is usually not one of them. Most jazz combos and bands rely heavily on drums and horns along with piano and string bass. Fans love the sounds of the brass horns such as the trumpet and the trombone and are equally thrilled by the melodies played by the reeds (woodwinds) such as the clarinet and the saxophone. However, it was only in later years that harpists, violinists and similar instrumentalists became welcome additions to jazz performances.

Fans are still delighted by the recordings of the great bandleaders like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and others and they still idolize the great instrumentalists like John Coltrane, Dizzie Gillespie and Charlie Parker. They hold on to memories of great drummers like Kenny Clarke, Max Roach and Cozy Cole. They sing the praise of great vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. Not very many fans are likely to come up with the names of a jazz harpist or cellist or violinist.

However, many more fans are being attracted to jazz and its history and there is now more interest in the string players.

Dorothy Ashby was a magnificent jazz harp player and a popular recording artist who was not much remembered after her death. Historians of jazz and fans of this music style are now appreciating her talents more. Alice Coltrane, the wife of Jazz star John Coltrane was also a great jazz harpist around the same time. There were a few male players as well. Dorothy Ashby was not the first jazz harpist of her era, but she was one of the best.

She was born into a musical family in Detroit, Michigan and grew up there. She was the daughter of Wiley Thompson, a jazz guitarist. He was her first music teacher and he began to give her piano lessons when she was a very young child. He often brought other jazz playing musicians home to practice or to hold impromptu concerts. Before very long, the little girl was joining in by playing with them on the piano. Thompson also gave his little daughter lessons on harmony and other music topics. She attended public elementary school and then went on to Bass Technical High School of Detroit. There she became a music major and continued to study piano. She also studied String Bass and Saxophone and she played all of them from time to time in the school orchestra. She became the rehearsal pianist for the school choir. At the same time she took voice lessons and was introduced to the harp, which would become her favorite lifelong instrument. She began to take lessons and soon was playing the harp in the school orchestra. She loved the instrument immediately. However, the school owned only five harps and she was one of fourteen students taking lessons. She determined to become a harpist and to own her own instrument some day. Three of her fellow

students, Donald Byrd, Gerald Wilson and Kenny Burrell, later became jazz musicians.

After graduating from Bass Technical, she went on to Wayne State University. She decided on a double major in Piano and Music Education. She continued to take harp lessons and was drawn more and more to the instrument. She got part time work and saved her money until she had enough to buy a harp of her own. She studied the classical techniques of harp playing seriously and deeply and she loved the instrument. She was the daughter of a jazz musician and she was a brilliant jazz pianist. She came to believe that the harp could be an excellent medium for playing jazz. Later she wrote that “This isn’t just a novelty, though that is what you expect. The harp has a clean jazz voice with a resonance and syncopation that turn regular jazz phrasing inside out.”

After graduating from Wayne State, she knew she wanted a career as a professional musician. She looked for work in the Detroit music scene. Her first jobs had her playing jazz piano, but as her interest in the harp grew and flourished and her skills on this instrument increased and matured, she decided to make playing the harp the focus of her musical career.

At first many of her fellow jazz performers were reluctant to recognize that the harp could be used for jazz. They thought of it as being strictly a classical instrument for formal concerts played by symphony orchestras. Others considered the harp to be a frilly, lightweight kind of instrument, although harps are actually heavy in weight and very tall, often much taller than the players who perform on them. Many jazz musicians believed the roar of the drums, the blare of the brasses and the bright mellow tones of the woodwinds would drown out the music of the harp. Continued on Page Twenty-Two►

Dorothy Ashby had her work cut out for her but she made plans and in the end she had a fabulous career with her unusual jazz instrument. She married John Ashby, a musician who played drums. He also became a successful theatre producer and playwright. They formed a jazz trio with Dorothy playing the harp and John Ashby on the drums. A list of other players filled the third slot from time to time. Dorothy was the conductor. They began in a small way, playing at private dances, weddings and banquets for reasonable fees. Sometimes they gave free concert just to become known and remembered. People began to appreciate them. They were getting many professional engagements. After some successful work in Detroit and the surrounding area, they began road tours, particularly in the Midwest and northeast sections of the nation.

The lady with the jazz harp began to be noticed and heard with interest, through the late 1950’s and the 1960’s. A number of companies asked the trio to make recordings with them. Then Dorothy Ashby was asked to play her harp for records made with big time jazz combos and orchestras such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Woody Herman, Richard Davis, Terry Pollard and Art Taylor. Down Beat Magazine was founded when jazz music began to be popular. It is loved and read by fans, performers and music critics and respected by recording companies. Among its many interesting features, the magazine polls its readers every year. The fans are asked to list their favorite performers and a list of the top stars is put together and published in the magazine. Dorothy Ashby’s name appeared on the on the 1960 list of fans’ favorites and in other years as well. Dorothy and her trio had made the national scene.

She was equally busy on the local scene in Detroit. She played a very active role in the Detroit Public Schools Harp program, giving harp and piano lessons, talking about music and perhaps turning some of the students on to future careers in music. Several of her biographers say that at this time she began to write a book about harmony for the jazz harp and other string instruments. It was later published.

She joined Detroit Radio Station WJR in 1960 and she appeared on radio music shows there until 1966. She was the emcee for some shows of her own. She also played the harp and sang. On other shows devoted to concerts, she played jazz harp in the orchestra. At the same she began to compose and arrange songs. Later she began to appear on television, sometimes with the trio, occasionally as a soloist, and once in a while playing in the orchestra pit with a big band. . It was during the years they were so busy while living in Detroit that Dorothy and John Ashby launched a program that was dear to their hearts and it proved to be a very successful one. They founded their own theatre company. John Ashby was writing plays. Some were musical show and Dorothy wrote the music and lyrics. Husband and wife worked as a team in both writing and production. In the company, which they called “The Ashby Players.” They tried to produce shows that would have meaning for the black citizens of Detroit. In addition to writing for the theatre company, Dorothy Ashby led the band numbers and played harp and piano when needed. The Ashby Players productions also gave black actors and actresses a place to perform. For instance, the actor Earnest L. Hudson was a featured actor in Ghostbusters I and II. He was known as Ernie Hudson when he acted with the Ashby Players.

Dorothy and John Ashby decided to move to the West Coast in 1970, possibly for health reasons. Dorothy played in concerts and recorded with Dionne Warwick, Barry Manilow and Stevie Wonder. She also found a new instrument that intrigued her so much that she took lessons and learned to play it well. It was the Japanese koto. This stringed instrument has been known and played in Japan for well over a thousand years. It is a relative of the harp. Instruments similar to the koto are played in China and Korea, countries that are neighbors to Japan. There is no doubt that Dorothy’s brilliant harp playing skills enabled her to learn to play the Koto quickly and easily. The koto is a very big instrument, sometimes six feet in length and it is shaped like a rectangle. It usually has 23 strings and it is played by being plucked like the harp. Dorothy made a recording of koto music called The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby. The text is based on a group of poems by Omar Khayyam, a medieval Persian astronomer and mathematician who wrote poetry on the side. A number of writers have translated the poems from Persian into English, and they have also been translated into many other languages as well. Edward Fitzgerald, A 19th century English, scholar did one of the most liked translations. Dorothy Ashby set this translation to music. The koto and the accompanying instruments make this recording a masterpiece.

This recording, like many early recorded jazz works, was not long remembered after the original production. There is now a call for them to be redone and made available again. It can’t be too soon!

WHERE DID I COME FROM?

A little boy had to write a report for school, so he went to his mother and asked, “Mom, where did I come from?”

Surprised at hearing such a question from her child, the mother - discreetly answered, “Um, the stork brought you.”

“And where did YOU come from?” the boy continued.

“Well, the stork brought me, just like he brought you. Now go to your room. No more questions, please.”

But the boy persisted. “What about grandma? Where did grandma come from?”

“Look, the stork brought grandma, the stork brought me, the stork brought you! Now go to your room. I do not want to talk about this anymore!”

So the little boy went to his room and began writing his report. “Our family hasn’t had a normal birth in three generations.”

Do you ever wonder how you got here”? The world sometimes gives you answers that are about as stupid as “the stork brought you.” Don’t believe it. You didn’t get here by accident. You’re not just a highly developed monkey. The Bible tells us that you were “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 739.14).

Reducing the mysteries of the universe to something that we can measure is like parents telling small children tall tales so they’ll stop asking questions. Don’t let tall tales invented In the name of science rob you of your faith. No one knows exactly how God did it, but we know that God created everything, including you and I--and he knows each of us by name. Not only that, he loves and desires a personal relationship with each person he has created He wants to have a personal relationship with you.

TO DO LIST FROM GOD

I ran my life in search of worldly things;My time and will were firmly in control.
