SIA CARGO PERTH DISPLAYS ‘SCOOTITUDE’

Scoot launched services between Singapore and Perth on 12 December 2013 and this was met with much anticipation and excitement from the cargo community.

To celebrate the commencement of Scoot’s five times weekly B777-200 flights from Perth to Singapore, SIA Cargo Manager Western Australia, Mr Harry Bregger organized a “Scoot Monza” Go-Karting Event held on 11 December at Kart World Belmont, inviting around 30 freight forwarders from Western Australia.

Two pairs of Perth-Singapore Scoot return tickets were presented to the winners of the go-karting finals (Mr Rick Forgione from Powerhouse Clearances & Mr Quentin Marshall from Express Link won these top prizes). A third pair of tickets (door prize) was presented to Mr John Thompson from Toll Priority.

SIA Cargo Regional Vice President South West Pacific Mr Shum Velu and Regional Marketing Manager Australia/New Zealand, Fu-Jui Hsueh joined in the celebrations as well. Sales Supervisor Perth, Mr Geoff Povey informed the freight forwarders that the new flights departing Perth at 19:30 hours offer agents a later cut-off time. Customer Services Supervisor Perth, Wayne Boston led the Operations team and ensured that the first shipments on the outbound SQ7707 traveled smoothly.

GREAT SHIPMENTS

SIA CARGO OPERATES CHARTERS FOR WORLD RENOWNED CONCERTSSingapore Airlines Cargo completed a hat trick of charter operations for Beyonce’s 2013 Tour of Australasia, which played to sold-out shows in Australia and New Zealand, and received rave reviews along the way.

SIA Cargo played an integral part in transporting the band equipment for this series of concerts. Our South West Pacific team is proud to operate charter operations from Sydney-Auckland and Auckland-Melbourne in October and with the finale being a Perth-Los Angeles charter in November to return the stage equipment to its base in the USA after a very successful tour. Over the three charter operations, in excess of 240,000kg of event equipment was safely moved around Australasia and delivered on time for these concerts without a hitch.

These multiple charters of time definite, high profile cargo is a true testament of the expertise, flexibility and teamwork of our Sales, Operations & Marketing teams in the South West Pacific region. - By Fu-Jui Hsueh, Sydney and Tania White, Auckland

GREAT SHIPMENTS

SIA CARGO TRANSPORTS XBOX ONE FROM ZHU HAI IN CHINA TO AMSTERDAMXBOX ONE, the latest edition of the popular high-tech game console from Microsoft was released on the 22 November 2013. The SIA Cargo China team secured a total of 12 charters of XBOX ONE shipments to be moved from its production base in Zhu Hai, China, within six weeks.

SIA Cargo overcame numerous challenges and even met the high expectations of the customer by delivering the products before the release day.

The shipper required the first batch of XBOX ONE to arrive Amsterdam by 10 November 2013 for marketing purposes. Despite the tight timeline, we overcame the challenge with great teamwork and careful coordination.

As Zhu Hai is not SIA Cargo’s online destination, our Shanghai team helped the cargo department at Zhu Hai airport to familiarise with our procedures, including freighter operations, standard cargo build-up, safety and security requirements. Another challenge that the team had to overcome was to obtain traffic rights from Civil Aviation Administration of China for SIA Cargo to operate freighter services from Zhu Hai

airport. Our team in Shanghai and Beijing, together with our colleagues at the head office worked closely to apply for the traffic rights.

We were faced with another challenge when we were informed that a Chinese navigator is required onboard our flight for safety consideration. SIA Cargo’s local partner ChinaCargo Airlines, as well as the parent company China Eastern Airlines, agreed to offer the navigator service for this charter movement.

Against all odds, our first charter departed Zhu Hai and arrived AAmsterdam on 8November 2013, well on time to meet the Microsoft launch date!

OUR PEOPLE8

In this issue, we invite Oh Kexin from Financial Accountant to share her experience in joining the company and Financial Accounting department after graduating from school.

1. Hi Ke Xin, what made you decide to pursue a degree in finance and accounting?

I prefer numbers but did not have a chance to do a business related course in Polytechnic. Hence, when I had the chance in University, I decided to choose something that suits my interest and went ahead to pursue a degree in Accounting & Finance.

2. What are your job responsibilities and which departments do you usually work closely with?

One main responsibility as a Payment Accountant is to ensure prompt payments toour vendors. It may sound simple, but this requires much effort from various departments and people to keep the whole process going smoothly. Flight Operations, Cargo Engineering, Services and Freighter Planning are some of the main departments I liaise with the most and I am thankful to have great colleagues assisting whenever I am in doubt.

3. In your opinion, what are the requirements essential as an Accounts Payable Accountant?

Meticulousness and Patience.

OUR PEOPLE9

4. Can you share with us what do you like best about your job?

As cliché as it sounds, I would still say it’s having some of the really nice colleagues around.

Through the various courses and attachments that the company has planned for the newly joined administrative officers (AOs), I got to know a group of great and fun colleagues who joined around the same time as me. Even though we work in different departments, I am glad that we are able to get along well and learn from each other, be it within office hours or outside the office.

Not forgetting my own teammates, the Financial Accounting seniors, who have been really nice and patient with me since my first day of work. Despite the “serious and hardworking” look which most of them portray, they are actually very fun-loving as well!

5. Lastly, what are some of the key challenges that you have encountered and how did you overcome them?

Prior to joining SIA Cargo, I did not have any experience in handling Accounts Payable work and some of the terms and procedures may seem foreign and overwhelming. However, I try to seek help when in doubt and always be conscientious in my work.

ACTIVITIES

SIA CARGO CHRISTMAS PARTYSIA Cargo organized a Christmas luncheon for all staff on 23rd December 2013 as a form of appreciation for their effort in 2013. The event was held at SATS Airfreight Terminal (AFT).

Our hosts for the day were Hui Xiang and Jie Kai and they brought much cheer and joy to all attendees at the party. The organizing committee also created a special and professional photo booth with interesting props this year. The photo booth was well received by our staff and they had fun taking candid photographs with colleagues and friends.

The party commenced with exciting team games, where divisions were grouped to pit against each other in charade and treasure hunt. Everyone was high-spirited and the games were excellent opportunities for staff to bond and display team spirit.

The organizing committee then conducted a mini lucky draw, while everyone had lunch. Last but not least, we had a grand lucky draw, which was highly anticipated by our staff. There were attractive prizes up for grabs such as television, movie vouchers to Golden Village theatres, cameras, etc. Our colleague from the Network Profit Management Department won the top prize, a 32” LED television.

The function was successful and made possible by the dedicated work of the organizing committee and advisor, Mr John Tay (Manager Crew Planning). Thank you all who helped out in one way or the other in contributing to the success of this party.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

SIA Cargo Corporate Citizenship Programme jointly organized a year-end graduation party with the teachers from Henderson Students’ Care Centre for our adopted charity.

The event, with the theme “Growing Up with Students' Care Centre“, was held on 14 December 2013 at Bukit MerahPublic Library. The objective was to give the children who were leaving Henderson Students' Care Centre after Primary 6, a memorable and happy end to the program, before they move on in their lives. Their parents, alumni children and the non-graduating children were invited to the party as well.

When the teacher-in-charge approached the committee with a request to support this graduation party, the management and our committee kind heartedly agreed. Staff generously contributed cash, snacks, stationery, hampers and goody bags for the party to help make this meaningful event a successful one. With the contributions, the committee purchased household appliances and grocery vouchers as lucky draw prizes for the beneficiaries and catered lunch reception for all guests. We also engaged a balloon

sculpturist and magician to entertain the children. In addition, the committee also set up a photo booth together with the teachers. The photo booth was a great hit amongst the children and their families.

The children were not only well entertained throughout the party, they also enjoyed the valuable bonding opportunity with their family. The children, their families and the charity organization were very appreciative of the support provided and we were glad that we played a part in bringing such joy to them.
