“If you don't like something, change it.If you can't change it,Change your attitude.Don't complain.” — Maya Angelou

Change is inevitable and in many instances, we welcome it. I prefer change to come upon me in an expected way, bringing with it the shiny certainty of better, happier days. Change is a given entity in a middle school life. Mainly it is of the unexpected nature. SURPRISE! Your best friend

now thinks you're lame. SURPRISE! Your body is changing and your clothes can't catch up. SURPRISE! You suddenly realize everyone else's bodies are changing and you look like a grammar school kid. SURPRISE! Your school is closing and you're completely clueless as to what the next phase of your school life will be!

Talk about feeling out of control! Changes are happening so swiftly, there is barely time for attitude adjustments. This assembly is not about complaining. Well, there may be a little of that, but mostly it is about sharing feelings and ideas and stories that will help make change a little easier — even if it just serves to remind us that all of us are in the same life raft.

I thank Tubbs, JB, Augie and Chloe, Dr. K, Dr. J (and also July and Sari) for gifting us with their stories, games, songs, humor and wisdom. I am also grateful for the countless number of middle school students and campers who have so graciously shared their thoughts and emotions with us. They are the heart and core of all of our assemblies.

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Inspired by the recent plan to close seven Atlanta schools, including two middle schools, the Alliance Theatre asked area middle-school students

to reflect on what a school closing might mean to them. Their responses have helped shape The Real Tweenagers of Atlanta: The Final Assembly and are a reminder that demographics and redistricting affects flesh-and-blood sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders all around town. Here are some of their responses.

edited by celise kalke

Khang Tran:“If the school closed for any reason, I would be a little sad because I won’t see all my friends if I went to a new school. It wouldn’t be very cool to leave because I’ve been to a lot of schools because my parents needed new jobs. I’ve been bullied a lot in the new school. It feels better now to be home and with my friends.”

ramTin mahmoud Khani:“If my school was closed down I would stay up all night making signs saying, “If we didn’t go to school how would we know when, why and how to close the school?” I would lock and handcuff myself to the benches. I would ask the neighborhood to come and make a huge circle around the school while holding hands.”

I would then get all my toys, video games, computer, TV and my video game consoles and throw [them] at the

people who are closing the school down. I would then finally recite Shakespeare and all the information in my binder and in my textbook. My deadliest weapon would be my little sister. I would make her cry for the entire day because my sister’s cry is very annoying and she will cry at anything.”

BecKy KonTyKo:“Where would my memories go? I wouldn’t be able to come back when I’m really old, and say, “That’s me, my lacrosse team won the state championship,” and then have my grandkids make fun of the old (ugly) style. That used to be the cutest. Or I wouldn’t be able to come back to my school when I’m a senior, and see my favorite middle-school teachers. LIFE WOULD SUCK IF MY SCHOOL WERE CLOSED DOWN. DON’T TAKE THE SCHOOL.”

REAL TWEENAGERS RESPOND TO REAL SCHOOL CLOSINGS

Page 9: October 2012: Real Tweens at the Alliance Theatre

Seven Atlanta schools will close next year and boundaries will move at dozens of others after the school board approved a controversial redistricting plan late Tuesday night.... originally, 10 schools were slated for closure, but the boaard decided to close Parks and Kennedy middle schools and capital View, White, cook, East lake and herndon elementary schools.

APS has enough seats to serve 60,000 students but has roughly 47,000 enrolled in traditional schools. This redistricting has been in the works for almost two years. it started with a demographic study, has included

numerous revised scenarios and been the subject of more than 100 meetings.

“i think that our superintendent and board members are more focused on how we can close schools instead of focusing on how we can save these schools,” said Alexus means, an eighth-grader at King middle School. She said the board and superintendent should try to figure out why some neighborhoods are losing enrollment.

E verybody settle down! School’s in session. And it’s going to be fun.The Real Tweenagers of Atlanta: The Final

Assembly puts you inside a school assembly, the final assembly at a school that’s closing. Hundreds of real Atlanta tweens wrote essays about what they’d do if their school closed, which gives the improvisational musical its voice. Onstage, four actors represent as many of those voices as possible — in dialogue, dance, songs, poems and a few high-tech surprises.

The franchise, conceived by Rosemary Newcott, the Alliance Theatre’s award-winning Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth and Families, is in its fourth and final year. It began with Middle School: The Musical, which ran for two seasons, and continued last year with the first Real Tweenagers. It tours schools in the metro area and beyond in addition to its run at the Alliance. As far as Newcott knows, it’s the only program of its kind anywhere in the country.

“The whole point originally was to create something that was really about this age group,” she says of those ages 10 to 14. "It’s so hard to be there. They’re not adults. They’re not kids. They’re really stuck in a transitional stage.”

Actors Bernard D. Jones and Jacob York have been in Newcott’s class since the beginning. Danielle Deadwyler and Claire Rigsby are back for a second session. All are channeling their own inner middle-schoolers.

“We represent a diverse collective identity, and not only with regard to ethnicity, but likes, talents, hobbies, personalities,” says Deadwyler, who plays tomboy and twin Auggie March. “She’s the girl who stands up for herself.”

Everything you’ll see onstage is there because Newcott and the actors want it there, because they are the playwrights, too, their characters and story lines honed during the early weeks of rehearsal.

“It’s more collaborative than anything I’ve been involved in,” says York. “No good idea is left unused. Plus, where else can you name your character after your two best middle-school friends? Shout-out to Brandon Howell and Josh Tubbs.”

As an audience member, don’t be surprised if you’re pulled onstage or visited at your seat.

“It’s not message theater,” Rigsby says. “We involve them. We are tweens with them. If you really understand them, you become a tween, too.”

Synopsisit’s the final assembly at an Atlanta middle school that will be closing. The kids are trying to figure out who they are individually and as a group if/when their school is no longer there. They question social ties and neighborhood definition, and try to find a voice for not only their own individual rites of passage into high school but also the closing of the school that they are passing through.

about the alliance theatre

AlliANcEThEATrE.org 19

Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. in 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta children’s Theatre (1929) to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. in 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. in 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, Artistic Director, the Alliance received the regional Theatre Tony Award®.

The Alliance has created a large body of new work: world premiere musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions; the plays of early career playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National graduate Playwrighting competition; work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community; and original plays for young audiences at every age level.

The Alliance takes great pride in our educational programming through the institute for Educators and Teaching Artists, community education including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development. Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to arts access.

The Alliance Theatre strives to set the highest artistic standards and create the powerful experience of shared theatre for a diverse audience. Above all else, we value excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration.404.733.4650 or alliancetheatre.org
