Clubhouse NewsClubhouse News

There’s a crisp autumn breeze blowing, and the sun is still warm and inviting. It’s nally Fall! The Clubhouse is always a cozy refuge when the weather is less ameniable, and we’re always working to make it grander and more inviting than it already is. We’re looking forward to new aromas from the kitchen, and festive adornments as holiday spirit begins to grow. Before you head to the mountains for a tour of Autumn’s grandeur, be sure to enjoy the splendor in your own backyard! There’s a vacation just minutes away, and a staff ready and eager to assist you in your recreational and gastronomic desires. Please stop by the reception desk and introduce yourself to our new Communications Director, Alisa Rawls Minshall. She is eager to meet all of you, and anxious to hear your thoughts on all things club related and beyond. Alisa is originally from Charleston, South Carolina, attended Elon where she earned a B.A. in Art (with a minor in Philosophy), and worked with the Tar Heel Olympic Sport coaches at UNC for eight years. She looks forward to getting to know all our members! If you’ve ventured to the back of the Clubhouse in recent weeks, you may have noticed the new umbrellas gracing the patio. We hope you will enjoy one of our many ne wines or Chef Reale’s enticing fall menu which features an array of fresh new selections either in the Dining Room, the bar, or on the patio!

! is isn’t your granddaddy’s country club. In his day, jackets for men were mandatory in the evenings and a necktie was preferred, if not required. Now, there is no time when jackets are a must, except for the rare special event, and neckties are seldom seen, outside of weddings and wakes.

Today’s country club is a more relaxed place, but that doesn’t’ mean we don’t have standards. And for those of you who don’t know what those standards include, and there are some of you out there, judging from what I’ve seen on occasion, here is a brief guide, lifted directly from the dress policy as approved by the house committee and passed by the board.

Our code is country club and business casual. For men, this means slacks, shorts, collared or dress collarless shirts such as mock turtlenecks. Business or sport jacket is optional. For women, slacks, skirts, capri pants and blouses may be worn. So may dress denim, and the best way I can explain that is if you look in the mirror and the person you see looks gorgeous, you’re probably dressed acceptably.

Now to the don’ts. ! at for sure includes short shorts, a fairly frequent no-no, judging from observation. (! e good news here is that with the advent of cold weather, this will dwindle as a problem.) You also shouldn’t wear pool attire, tank tops, sleeveless shirts (males), boxers, work jeans, ill-fi tting or overly graphic tees and any clothing that is ripped, torn or dirty in the clubhouse.

Males are not permitted to wear hats, caps or visors inside the clubhouse except for the locker rooms. Hats should never be placed on the dining tables or bars. Shoes are required in the clubhouse at all times. You’re supposed to clean your golf shoes before entering the clubhouse. Soft spike golf shoes are permitted.

! ere may be exceptions to these rules for certain events. Specifi c dress for such events will be described in the club newsletter.

It is the responsibility of individual members to make sure their children and guests follow the rules. If you don’t, you may be gently reminded by sta" of what those rules are, or even handed a copy.

On balance, we dress acceptably. Rules violations are far from rampant, or intentional. But they do happen.

So let’s remember our mantra: Stay classy.

On Tuesday, three inches of rain fell. This left a mess, to say the least. As everything dries, the course will be cleaned and mowed. All in all, the next few days will yield great conditions.

The green height continues to be lowered. Ball roll is better by the day. As the bermudagrass slows its growth, we will concentrate labor on detail work and landscape beds. Pine straw areas are being dressed up as well. Plans are in the works to make this kind of operation more consistent throughout the year.

Thank you,Craig S. Thompson

WGA NewsWGA NewsGreetings All from the WGA!

I keep hearing such great things about the Club’s program “Link up to Golf ” which was designed to instruct both new golfers and re-introduce former players to this great game. It was very well-attended and hopefully will yield some new members to the WGA and Nifty Niner organizations. Linda Johnston (is the WGA membership chair and would be happy to hear from you if you are interested in joining: [email protected]

Thank you to our September Play Day Chairs Carolyn Hightower, Diane Koenigshofer, Linda Johnston and Susan Weidener. Some of our winners for the month were Shere Stone, Suzanne Kozel, Barbi Dalton, Linda Johnston, Mary McCoy, Diane Koenigshofer, Carolyn Hightower and Lily Lee.

Of course the big news for the WGA in October is our Championship on Sunday, October 21st. The Stableford scoring system we’ll be using really does take the pressure off – so if you’ve never competed in our Championship this is the year to do it! And our Championship Chairs Barbi Dalton and Kelly Ross are planning a great post-match reception for all the competitors.

Fall is such fabulous gol ng weather in North Carolina. Hope you all can take advantage of it!

Laura EllgenWGA President

The SMGA Championship winner is Ed Kaiser with a two-day score of 159. James King was runner-up with a total of 165. The overall Net Score Champion was Benson Pilloff. There were also three ight net winners: Terry Flynn, Tim Smelzer and Benson Pilloff.

The President’s Tournament has been concluded with John Latimer as Grand Champion with a win over the First Flight winner Gus Conley.

On September 28th the SMGA had the pleasure of inviting the Ladies from the Women’s Golf Association and the Nifty Niners Golf Association to a day of golf and luncheon in the Clubhouse. This is always a special occasion for the SMGA and all enjoyed the spectacular fall day on the course.

Upcoming events in October feature an Interclub at CHCC on Wednesday the 10th and the annual Fall Breakfast and Superball tournament on Wednesday the 24th.
