Every month I sit here staring at a blank screen wondering what on earth to write to you all about. There is always so much going on in Christchurch and hopefully it’s mainly covered here within these pages so how about I tell you about my life and me this month.
Well, My youngest son has gone into Year 8 at Twynham and finally looks like he actually fits into his blazer looking like the proper, young handsome chap that he is. We’ve recently moved closer to the school so he is over the moon that he gets those extra ten minutes in bed each morning! My eldest boy has started college over in Poole and is finding it quite a trek each morning and evening so the days are now much longer for him. I feel he’s grown up way too fast and I hardly seem to see him anymore. My youngest is 18 months now and having two older children has made me realize how precious every moment is with her so although I work full-time hours, I try and squeeze these into the evenings and the two days I have help with looking after her so that I can spend as much time as possible with her walking around Christchurch and going to the swing park etc. We always find something to do here in Christchurch together come rain or shine and since doing so, I’ve really come to appreciate even more now, how lovely a town we truly live in. And lastly and by no means least, my husband, amongst working every hour and putting in his training for cycling the Etape du Tour again next year, he has a long list of jobs that he has to live up to for our new home which is one huge project we have taken on.
With such a busy household, there’s never a dull moment in this house I can tell you! Oh, and I forgot to mention the newest member of our family ‘Socks’ our little kitty. I couldn’t resist popping a piccie of him in this edition so, here he is!
Well until next month readers, please enjoy this month’s magazine.
All the Best,
CherylCheryl DennettEditor & Publisher

The 8th Christchurch (Burton) Scouts have been in existence since July 1933 and now
provide activities for over 75 children in Burton.
The Group have a dedicated team of volunteer Leaders who run an active programme of events for the Beavers, Cubs and Scout which include camping, sports and community activities. The programme helps Burton Village retain its community feel and helps make life in the Village more pleasant.Without our volunteers, supporters and Friends, the Scouts would not be able to run.
The Group meets regularly at Burton Scout Hut which is a relic of the Severn Bridge Building project where it was once used as a Site Foreman’s office. The building has been on its current site since the fifties and despite several major renovations is now coming to the end of
Burton Scouts Group its useful life and it needs to be replaced. The Scout Group has now raised more than £20,000 but they are looking to meet a rebuilding cost of £120,000. The Group Leaders, supporters, parents and friends are confident the target will be met.The Scouts also organise a Carnival each year, usually in July but due to the weather this year will be on September 15th the proceeds go towards keeping scouting activities running in Burton. The Carnival is one of many fund raising events including being at the Fireworks in Stanpit and this year we have been involved in the Torch Relay and the Jubilee Event on the Quomps.

With the school holidays well
behind us and school back in full swing, the next on the list to look forward to is Halloween! There’s something nice about eating all those sweets, opening the door to the children who have dressed up for their trick or treating and watching good old Halloween films.
Tammy Moss
Whether it’s a night in with the family or a night out on the town there are some places in Christchurch offering entertainment. For families, the Christchurch Rowing Club are hosting a fundraising party on the 28th from 7pm and are welcoming everyone. But if you are someone who prefers not to dress up, then this is the year for you to embrace it! All they are asking is a £2 donation on the door.
There is also a guided walk on the night of Halloween. Susan Stott, a Paranormal Researcher will walk and talk to you about many haunted tales of Christchurch. Join her if you dare! The ‘Ghost, Ghouls and things that go bump in the Town’ guided walk is £4 per person and you can get tickets from Christchurch Information Centre. Under 16’s go free!
This year, why not carve a pumpkin? Always a great way to entertain little ones. Searching the internet for ideas of a uniquely scary face is a great way for inspiration!
This year I’ll be celebrating Halloween up in Winchester where I’m studying, but I will be sure to have my pumpkin carved, my sweets at the ready and be fully expecting whatever Halloween tricks will be played on me by my housemates!
Happy Halloween!!!

Congratulations to Cheryl for initiating a fantastic
new addition to the local ‘Eye’ publications offer, the Business Awards. Awards schemes are not only good for business, but for the consumer also.
Awards schemes are a fantastic way for businesses to let the world know what they do and just how well they do it. Awards provide opportunities to promote the business and can offer the consumer confidence in the goods and services provided.
Once established, awards schemes encourage competitiveness. A good existing example locally is the Food Festival’s Best of the Best Awards, which are now sought after prizes and used in marketing and promotion of the winning establishments. In an effort to win, local eateries raise their game and therefore standards rise within the trade.
Local Eye magazines’ Business Awards will be open to local businesses of all kinds and importantly be voted for by local consumers. Monthly winners will not only have some great publicity but can look forward to being in with a chance to win the prestigious title of Business of the Year.
Another way for businesses to promote themselves and also support the local community is through getting involved in local events. In last month’s edition of the Eye was a double-page spread promoting this year’s Highcliffe Christmas Carnival – check out the website for details of sponsor opportunities. Local events like this present a great chance for businesses to put themselves in the limelight. In fact, many local events would not happen but for the support of local businesses.
Businesses provide goods and services and, importantly, local employment so successful businesses are essential for communities to thrive. So, whether a business or a customer – why not get involved with local events and schemes like the Local Eye Magazines’ Business Awards and get your nomination in!

Magnesium oil spray or flakes can be helpful in pain management, whether it is chronic muscle pain as in back pain or more acute as in cramp, sprains and strains. Magnesium enhances recovery from strenuous activity, and from injuries. Athletes have discovered the benefits. For example Greg Rutherford, gold medallist in the long jump in the Olympics, uses both the flakes and the spray, particularly for cramp and post-exercise recovery.
Cramp and Muscle PainMuscle cramp, muscle pain and muscle twitches may indicate low magnesium levels. Interestingly, pre-menstrual stress, migraines, moodiness, low mood, high blood pressure, osteoporosis and an increased risk of falls and fatigue also can relate to low magnesium levels.
Why you may need Magnesium
• The UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey of 2008-20010 has stated that:
• ‘80% of older people (65+) are deficient in magnesium, a deficiency known to promote high blood pressure, heart disease and falls.’
• ‘Half of our teenage girls have daily levels that indicate gross deficiency’
• ‘Among children and adolescents in the UK, the majority fail to get the basic reference nutrient intake (below the RDA) for magnesium.’
Magnesium levels in food have lowered over the years. Eating of fresh dark greens and other magnesium-rich sources has decreased. Medication such as contraceptives, asthma drugs, anti-depressants and indigestion and antacid tablets, are examples of the many drugs that prevent absorption or deplete magnesium levels.
A Help for Calcium Magnesium is needed for the proper use of calcium in the body. Many specialists believe the present high incidence of osteoporosis is more to do with low magnesium levels than lack of calcium.
What is the best way to Increase levels?Improving your diet is important; greens, nuts, seed, whole grains and so on. Supplementation is also advisable, particularly where there are problems such as mentioned above. Magnesium Chloride is an effective way to increase magnesium levels in a very easy way. Magnesium Oil can be sprayed anywhere on the body. It is ideal for application after showering. Capsules and tablets are also available.
Magnesium flakes in a foot soak or a bath are also an easy way of increasing your levels. Voted by Harper’s Bazaar Magazine as the winner in its ‘Best Overnight Destresser’ category in this year’s Hot 100 listings Magnesium Flakes are far superior option to Epson Salts. A soak in Magnesium Flakes helps detoxify and reinvigorate.
I hope you have found this information useful and interesting. Try it for yourself!

A popular club for older people in Christchurch faces closure unless more local people
come forward urgently to help out. Care charity Brendoncare has issued a plea for volunteer helpers to get in touch, so that it can continue providing members, most of whom are in their 80s and 90s and live alone, with a really valuable trip out of their home each week.
Brendoncare Locality Manager, Tony Hanson, explains: “Our club members thoroughly enjoy meeting their friends, guest speakers and entertainers, activities, outings and informative talks. But we really need to recruit more helpers and a leader to keep the club going. The leader role would suit someone who is well organised with a confident, outgoing personality. Volunteers are very special people, so I hope the local community will respond to this heart-felt plea for help.”
Popular Club for older people in Christchurch desperately need more volunteers
The Brendoncare Castle Club meets at the Waterford Lodge Hotel, Bure Lane, Mudeford, Christchurch weekly on a Monday from 2pm – 4pm.
Tony continues: “Our clubs are really popular, showing the enormous need there is for socialising and friendship for older people. If you feel you could help, please get in touch! Full training is given and it really is a thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable way to spend a few hours each week. ”
If you feel you could help us, please call Tony on 01202 722211 or 07900918017 or visit www.brendoncare.org.uk. New members also very welcome.

The boathouse veranda fills with visitors; three swans swoosh overhead. Black headed gulls fly, free as the wind; terns shriek amongst buoys.
Three swans swoosh overhead; a cat, poised, patiently waits. Terns shriek amongst buoys; the water gently laps the shore
A cat, poised, patiently waits. A man jumps over a low log, laughing, with his dog. The water gently laps the shore; a skiff, with shouting cox, glides towards Wick Ferry.
A man jumps over a low log, laughing, with his dog. Black headed gulls fly, free as the wind; a skiff with shouting cox glides towards Wick Ferry. The boathouse veranda fills with visitors. This poem is based on images gathered by CCC Poets during 2012 for the September Poetry Jamboree.
Avon and Stour
Christchurch in summer listen if you can,Avon maiden is embracing Stour Man.
See them rejoicing in the September heat, where they are betrothed is called Riversmeet.
What seems to be the ebb and flow of the tide, are the nuptial rhythms of Groom and Bride.
What
What is age?A turning of the page. The tempering of the fire.
What is age?A turning of the page.We are as old as our desire.

St Faith’s Fair
31ChristchurchEYE
St Faith’s Fair
On the 1st January 1257 the twenty-one year-old Baldwin de Redvers came of age and King
Henry III subsequently installed him as the Lord of the Manor of Christchurch and numerous other manors. This position had been held by the de Redvers for over 150 years, and for all of that time the town had been served by a single annual fair. Being held eight weeks after Easter on the holy feast day of the parish church this was known as Trinity Fair.
However, later in 1257 the King granted Baldwin two charters permitting him to hold markets and fairs on eleven of his manors scattered throughout Hampshire, Wiltshire, and Devon (the de Redvers were Earls of Devon). The latter of these charters, issued shortly after Christmas, gave permission for a second fair to be held in Christchurch on the vigil, feast, and morrow of the maidenly St Faith. It is not known why St Faith’s day was chosen - her feast day (6th October) may have already been another local holiday, or it might simply have been to provide an autumn complement to the early summer Trinity Fair. The original charter is presumed lost, but it is almost certain that it would have included the standard restriction that St Faith’s Fair should not be ‘injurious to neighbouring fairs’. Even in the 13th century it was acknowledged that a new ‘shopping centre’ could cause problems for existing traders – even if it was located a two hour ride away rather than a ten minute drive to an edge-of-town supermarket.
Baldwin de Redvers seems to have been generous with the revenue he was due from St Faith’s Fair because he subsequently granted ‘the entire toll and stallage and all customs of merchandise’ – a good proportion of the profit - to the burgesses of Christchurch. The burgesses were the prominent people of the town, usually about twelve in number, who acted as an unelected town council. The list of witnesses to Baldwin’s charter
indicates that it was almost certainly drawn up in Christchurch, possibly in the upstairs hall of the Constable’s House. The burgesses obviously valued this privilege because some fifty years later they applied to King Edward II, and paid a fee of 100 shillings (the equivalent of over £3,000 today), for a confirmation of Baldwin’s charter.
From 1752, when eleven days were omitted from September to bring the calendar into accord with Pope Gregory’s reforms, St Faith’s Fair was held on the 17th October. It continued on this date as a livestock fair until abolished, along with Trinity Fair, in 1872 – ironically, at the request of the Mayor and burgesses.
In 2007, to celebrate the 750th anniversary of the royal charter for St Faith’s Fair, a ‘medieval’ fair was held in the historic courtyard of Ye Olde George Inn (Photo). A similar fair has been held at Place Mill on Christchurch Quay every year since. This year St Faith’s Medieval Fair, featuring music, crafts, and games, will be held at Place Mill and the Red House Museum on Saturday 6th October – St Faith’s feast day - from 11.00am until 4.00pm. For more details contact: www.facebook.com/StFaithsMedievalFair or [email protected]
For more historical information about St Faith’s Fair refer to the well-researched booklet ‘The Medieval Markets & Fairs of Christchurch’ by local historian David Eels, available locally at £3.50.
The Christchurch Local History Society produces a quarterly journal for its members (also available to purchase at Christchurch Information Centre) and organises a series of talks from September to May. These take place at Christchurch Junior School in Clarendon Rd, on the first Tuesday of the month.

Business Awards
Awards Celebrating Local Business Excellence
Local Eye Magazines are proud to announce the recent launch of our Business Awards, to recognise and celebrate business excellence through the successes and achievements of it’s local businesses in Christchurch & Highcliffe.
ALL businesses in Christchurch & Highcliffe have an opportunity to win our Business of the Month Award. There is one award each month for the Highcliffe Eye magazine and also one each month for the Christchurch Eye magazine.
Each winner of the monthly Business Awards will be highlighted in a following edition of the magazine, appear on our ‘Wall of Fame’ on our website, receive a framed certificate and will also have permission to use our branded award logo on any merchandise/advertising to help promote their business, therefore raising their profile within the community.
We have decided that all businesses
within the BH23 area may now be nominated by our readers via the website. Entries are monitored so that a business is unable to keep nominating for themselves. Businesses found to be abusing the system will be withdrawn from the awards and we will publicise the withdrawal. The Business of the Month
Awards are chosen from the nominations by our Editor.
As well as our ‘Business of the Month Award’, we will also be awarding our ‘Business of the Year Award’ with results being taken from the overall nominations of the year. A panel consisting
of representatives of local impartial organisations, plus one representative of Local Eye magazines management team overlooks the ‘Business of the Year Awards’. All our advertisers are automatically entered into our Business Awards.
To nominate your favourite business, go to our website
www.localeyemagazines.co.uk It takes just two minutes!
“Awards are one of the most powerful and cost-effective
marketing tools and winning a prestigious Business of the Month Award will help your business to stand out from the crowd, send a positive message to your existing
customers and attract new business.”
