FROM THE MANAGERLeslee Jones

Will it ever cool off? I’ve lived in Venice for 26 years and don’t remember it ever being this hot this long. A reminder to our Homeowners that rent their homes on a seasonal basis. All renters must go through background screening (forms available at the office) before coming for their seasonal stay. Please remember that if your home is not located on a pet site your seasonal renters are not allowed to bring their pets. If your home is on a pet site they must obey all rules as to size, leashes and picking up after their pet. As the homeowner your are responsible for making sure that your seasonal renter knows the community rules. Please don’t let your seasonal renter move in without knowing these rules. It will cause problems for them and for you as the homeowner. Notices for rule violations will be sent to both your occupant in Bay Lake and to you at your alternate address. If you have questions regarding rentals, please call me at the office (941-485-2555).

We have had our new fountain installed in our lake this summer and hopefully by the time this newsletter is printed we will have had road work completed and the ADA door controls installed at the Clubhouse.

Our “Home of the Month” award has continued throughout the summer. The winner for June was Suzanne Robinson-Jones of 26 Orange Blossom. July’s winners were Kathy McCoy and James DeFalle of 205 Flamboyant and the August winners were Jesus Febres and Toni Summers of 65 Hyacinth. September’s winners were Mike and Ginny Grunzweig of 49 Orange Blossom. The judges chose these homes for the summers’ awards along with a $50 gift card. Make sure that you take a ride by these homes. Good luck

to next month’s winner! Remember that homes are being judged on the overall appearance of your home - not just the landscaping.

Get ready for our 2012 ELS Sarasota Expo March 5th thru 9th! Bay Lake Estates will host “Jazz on the Green” on March 8th - watch for posters and sign-up information! The date for the “Manager’s Annual Lunch” has not been set yet - more info to come!

FROM THE PRESIDENTCarla Hannay

Hello and welcome back to our early returnees and newcomers.

I had planned on a lengthy article for this first newsletter but due to family situations I did not

Page 4: October 2011 The Bay Laker - baylakeestates.org for a special transport to bring Babs in her ... side of 776 just short of the Jacaranda traffic ... our hot summer patrol shifts May

Page 4

have the time to accomplish same.

Possibly by the time you read this newsletter our handicap door will be installed at the clubhouse and more work completed on Oleander Street. These were two of the objectives that were set forth in last May’s article.

Sadly we have lost two of our long time residents…..Elizabeth (Betty) Parisi and Jan Sherman. Our hearts go out to the families of these very unique ladies.

HEADS UP: For those of us that have old medicines and don’t know how to dispose of them, you can bring them to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Building on Rt. 776, 24 hours/ day, 7 days/week. They are located on the left hand side of 776 just short of the Jacaranda traffic signal. If you’re not sure where this is or need assistance, please call me at 484-1371.

CITIZENS SECURITY PATROLCarol Gilchrist

Just as we are all beginning to be a little weary of our hot summer patrol shifts May thru October - I received a phone call from - - -

Volunteer Gary Fugate asking if anyone does EARLY MORNING 5 AM ISH? Which he is willing to do in addition to his regular Friday night shift. It has been approved and we will now have random early morning patrols. Please alert your Neighbors and friends - and - if YOU wish to do any early morning time slots, please call me.

Also - kudos - to Rick Bedat who does an amazing job of keeping the cart in good Repair - ready to roll condition.

The dedication of each of you to assist with this safety project is so much appreciated. As the Booking person, I am grateful for your help. I encourage you as residents to Remain involved in watching for anything unusual and report same. We have a great Community here and cooperation is the key to any endeavor.

BAY LAKE ESTATE PAPER BOYS & GIRLSCarol Gilchrist

Did you ever wonder how your monthly Bay Laker gets to your door?

It begins with residents submitting articles to Janice Van Dyke by the 15th of each month. Herb & Janice do a lot of typing and editing before our new printers “Community Media” pick it up and prepare it for delivery. The cost for printing is paid for by the advertisers within and is done at no cost to the association. The finished copies are delivered to Herb and Janice who then deliver them to Dick Feltz. Dick sorts them into delivery packets for the volunteers who walk them to your home.

Paper “Boys and Girls” are Jack and Carla Hannay, Sosh Wopinsky and Phyllis Tippner, Ray Miner, Agnes Kroll, Toots Cronin, Carol Gilchrist, Mary Ellen Mittler, Bob Kreidler, Ruth Doll, Bruno Dell Angelo, and Joan Zimmerman.

Please be sure you have a clothespin attached to your doorway so the papers do not fly around the yards in the wind.

THE LIVING FENCECarol Gilchrist

During the past year, our Bay Lake Estate Association and ELS provided funds for the Bougainvillea plants which I planted along the fence row at the end of Carissa Street. All was fine until Mother Nature challenged us with a heavy frost and the plants were compromised and a few did not survive. I pruned and prayed – and the Association came to the rescue providing funds for the special fertilizer administered thru the summer. ELS have also provided the round up I spray behind the plants to keep weeds away.

Blooms are now appearing and in addition we have been blessed with two new replacement plants by longtime residents Bruno and Harriet Dell Angelo. We thank all for their generosity with this project and hope the beauty may being pleasure for each of you.

BAY LAKE ESTATE RESIDENT ON CAPITOL HILL

Bay Lake Estate resident Carol Gilchrist visited Capitol Hill Sept. 13 and 14 along with Dr. Melanie Helfman of Miami; as the only Florida representatives for the National Osteoporosis Foundation Strong Voices - Strong Bones Event to raise awareness of osteoporosis and bone health.

The foundation had arranged for them to present to Senator Bill Nelson, Senator Mark Rubio, Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Representative Mario Diaz-Balart and Representative Vern Buchanan in separate sessions. NOF brought together 15 patients and other health professionals from across the country for this event to encourage sponsoring of the bill for the Bone Health Promotion and Research Act. Also to implement a comprehensive National Bone and Health Program reducing the physical and economic burden for millions of Americans. Also included in the presentations were requests for continuing the DXA funding presently set to expire at the end of next year, and consideration of an increase in funding for the National Institute of Health.

During her visits on Capitol Hill, Carol presented the views and needs of her osteoporosis community and those at risk for this silent disease. Osteoporosis is a disease in which the bones become weak and are more likely to break. One in two women age 50 or older

and one in four men will break a bone because of osteoporosis in their lifetimes. 44 million people have or are at risk with low bone mass. Osteoporosis related fractures cost 19 billion in 2005 and estimates are that figure will rise to 25 billion by 2025. A woman’s risk of hip fracture is equal to the combined risk of breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer. In Florida, a more senior population, 58% are afflicted with osteoporosis.

Carol is also a member of the Englewood Education/Support Group of 200 members under the leadership of Pat Burkey which is sponsored by the Englewood Community Hospital.

MEMORIAL DAY LUNCHEON

Rosemary Parker chaired the Memorial Day luncheon. Rosemary and her committee served us a lunch of salad and pizza. Dessert was ice cream cups and cookies. It was an enjoyable luncheon.

JULY 4, 2011 LUNCHEONBonnie Gates

Bonnie Gates chaired the 4th of July luncheon. Bill & Donna Reese, Carol Gilchrist, Joan Goering, Barbara Hopkins and Lisa Godsoe were on her committee. We served 60 people pulled pork, potato salad, rolls, baked beans, potato chips and homemade cupcakes for dessert. It was a beautiful 4th of July.

I want to thank my committee for helping me make this a success. Everyone had a good time.

PEANUT BUTTER PIEJanice Van Dyke

Ingredients1 graham cracker crust2/3 cup peanut butter1 cup powdered sugar1 4.6 oz. cook & serve pudding & pie filling (chocolate or vanilla)3 cups milk1 container cool whip

Combine peanut butter & powdered sugar in a small bowl. Mix until very crumbly. Can add more powdered sugar if necessary. Put ½ of mixture in the bottom of the graham cracker crust.

Cook pudding as directed on the box for making a pie using the 3 cups of milk. Pour into pie crust over the peanut butter/powdered sugar mixture. Refrigerate.

Before serving top with cool whip and the remainder of the peanut butter/powdered sugar mixture. Enjoy.

This is very much like the pie served by Yoder’s.
