HOW TO CHOOSE A GYM

Choosing a gym can be difficult. Here’s how to sort through the contracts, classes and confusion.

Once you’ve made the decision to join a gym, you might be bursting with enthusiasm to get started. But take the time to weigh up your options. Choosing the right gym will maximise the physical and mental rewards that come from regular exercise. Who knows, you might even meet some new people and have some fun!Location and hours

The rule of location, location, location certainly applies when you are deciding which fitness centre to join. A gym needs to be accessible and convenient if you are going to get value from your membership. Ideally, it should be within

five or 10 minutes of your home or work, otherwise it’s easy to find excuses not to go.

Also investigate the hours of operation, including holidays and weekends. Make sure the facility will be open at the times you intend to train.

Layout and feelIf you feel a little anxious about visiting a gym, you’re not

alone. Embarrassment has been identified as one of the major barriers to exercise. It’s important to feel comfortable in the centre you intend to join.

Look at the type of people who are already members, and see if you would be willing to puff and sweat alongside them. Check to see if staff are friendly and helpful.

Large gyms can be a little impersonal, and have a ‘fish bowl’ feel. Some people seek out this kind of gym; others prefer a smaller centre that caters for overweight or inexperienced members. For example, some gyms are women only, or have rooms set aside just for women or personal training.

Each centre will have its own unique culture, staff profile and membership base, so don’t be discouraged if the first

place you visit is not what you had in mind.

WHY HAVE A PET?

Pets can be many things to their owners, and there are many great reasons to have a pet. The most common reason for a person to have a pet is for companionship. Pets make wonderful companions, because they are generally loyal and affectionate. However, there are many other reasons to get a pet.

Some pets can be kept as hobbies. You can get a pet that is a show animal, and make a hobby of caring for it, training it, and taking it to different dog shows. This is a great way to spend your time, and can be very beneficial to your pet as well.

Getting a pet can also be a step toward personal growth. You can learn to share love, give affection and attention to a pet, which can in turn teach you much about your own

relationships. It can also prepare you for the trials of having a child, and how to give love and affection and also discipline to someone or something that you love.

Another reason you should have a pet is for your physical and mental health. It is estimated that people with pets, particularly dogs, live up to ten years longer than people who never have a pet. This is because when you have a pet you are much happier than when you do not have a pet. Having a pet allows you to experience less stress, which can play a major role in poor health. You will also find that you have an excuse to get up and about and get some exercise when you have a pet, particularly a dog. The animal needs exercise also, and you can enjoy the time together.

In addition, a pet will allow you to have a sense of security. The pet will be able to notify you if a burglar is about to enter the house. Dogs can also offer security when you are out walking alone at night. Pets of nearly any kind will make some type of noise when they see a stranger, so most any pet is good for a sense of security.

Finally, pets are great for children because they are a huge responsibility. You can get a pet for your child to teach them responsibility. They must be put in charge of caring for the pet, such as taking it for walks, making sure it is let outside to use the bathroom, feeding it, and bathing it. This will teach them how to care for another living being, which will prepare them for parenthood in the future. It will also teach them about having responsibility that must be met in order for rewards to occur.

All in all, having a pet is one of the best things you can do for you and your family. It is recommended that everyone has a pet. Even if you do not get a dog or cat due to space or time commitment issues, there are other pets you can have that make great hobbies or interesting conversation pieces, such as snakes or fish.

Individuals and businesses throughout Gippsland have rallied to support Sale self-employed builder Andrew La Porta after became critically ill six months ago.

So far more than $14,500 has been raised through a number of community fundraising events to help support Andrew and his family, as he waits for a heart transplant.

In January this year, Andrew was frustrated he didn’t seem to be recovering from a bout of the flu.

He ended up in hospital and a few days later suffered sudden heart failure.

At just 38 years-old, Andrew was fit and healthy, a hard working builder with his own business. He and wife Joanne had twin boys, Ashley and Josh who were only 18-months-old at the time.

Andrew spent three months in the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where he had open heart surgery to insert a pump into his heart – which effectively did all the work of the heart, so that his heart could rest and recover.

Cardiac specialists discovered the cause of Andrew’s sudden heart failure was simply a case of a virus he randomly caught which for some reason attacked his heart.

They have since found that despite months of surviving with the assistance of the pump, Andrew’s heart hasn’t healed enough to function unassisted again.

Andrew is now waiting for a heart transplant.

Family friend Wendy Reeves (whose husband is also a Sale self-employed builder) launched a fundraising campaign in March called “Andrew’s Little Friends” which started out as a small craft challenge, that quickly took off into a series of fundraising events that have not only been well patronised by the Gippsland community, but also has participants from around Australia.

All the fundraising events have attracted large crowds and Wendy has also used these gatherings to promote the importance of local businesses supporting each-other to keep their local economies healthy and also the more specific message about organ donation.

Wendy is in the process of finalising a major raffle for the cause, with prizes including a very impressive stainless steel barbecue, stylish floor rugs, homewares, plumbing and electrical gift vouchers.

Tickets for this raffle will be sold all over Gippsland and will be available soon.

Wendy is currently collating a list of volunteers who are interested in selling books of tickets in their particular pocket of Gippsland.

To register your interest please phone Wendy Reeves on 0488 586 330.

Further information about the Andrew’s Little Friends fundraising events can be found at www.andrewslittlefriends.com.au or www.facebook.com/andrewslittlefriends .

One of just 100 of its type built One owner from new One of 11 ‘no reserve’ classics

An Australian ‘Muscle Car’ with a unique Sicilian connection is one of 11 interesting classics being offered with no reserve at Shannons Sydney Spring Classic Auction on Monday October 10.

The rare and original Leyland P76 Targa Florio sedan was one of 900 limited-edition P76s built in 1974 to commemorate the stage win of a nearly standard P76 in the 1974 World Cup Rally. Driven by Australian rally driver Evan Green, the Australian-built, Rover V8-engined P76 surprised many with its speed in the event’s ‘Targa Florio’ stage held in Sicily, Italy.

Each Targa Florio model came with a 4.4-litre all-alloy V8 engine, automatic transmission, power steering and a limited-slip differential, but only 100 were finished in Aspen Green like the very original example that Shannons are auctioning.

The car’s original owner worked with BMC-Leyland for over 30 years and purchased his Leyland P76 Targa Florio in October 1974.

Still in excellent original condition, the vehicle has been garaged all its life and is believed to have travelled just 71,450km since new. It is being sold with a many of it original documents including its comprehensive workshop and owners manual.

History records that the P76 was the right car at the wrong time. Built by Leyland Australia to compete head-on with the large Ford Falcon, Holden Kingswood and Chrysler Valiant family cars of the era, it won the coveted ‘Wheels Car of the Year’ award in 1973 before the global fuel crisis put large cars of its type out of favour with buyers.Today however, the P76 is as much a symbol of 1970’s style as big collars, flared trousers

and platform soled shoes and is gaining appreciation as an automotive icon of the Muscle Car era.

The P76 Targa Florio is one of 29 vehicles and 26 lots of automobilia in the Shannons Spring Auction on October 10, where it is expected to sell for $8,000-$12,000.

It is one of 11 unreserved vehicles in the sale, with others including a rare 1969 right hand drive Ford Torino GT Convertible ($16,00-$22,000), a ‘project’ 1977 LX Torana SL/R 253 V8 automatic and a two-owner from new 1924 Dodge Tourer – the latter two estimated to sell in the $8,000-$12,000 range.

If you are considering purchasing a coffee machine here are a few tips to

hopefully help you to make the right choice.

Firstly, purchase your machine from someone in the coffee industry who knows what they are talking about and can give you the correct advice. If you speak to someone who is an expert in the coffee industry, they will be able to answer any questions you may have, and you should ask lots of questions!

At The Bean Scene we will happily answer any

questions you may have and make your choice of machine as simple as possible. There is a huge range of machines available on the market these days, making choosing a machine sometimes a little confusing, like manual vs automatic, volumetric vs lever and so on. Look for brands such as Bezzera, Expobar, Simonelli, Giotto, Rancilio to name a few. These are commercial brand machines, extremely well made, reliable and will last you for many years. Quality machines are mainly manually operated. They are very easy to use and in most cases quicker than an automatic machine. Manually operated

machines are very low maintenance, and cleaning is simple and quick.

The advantage of buying from a reputable person in the coffee industry is the backup service and expert after sales advice when you need it, from choosing beans, to maintaining your equipment etc,

which is rare in this day and age. At The Bean Scene in Cinema Arcade

Warragul, we pride ourselves on our customer service, industry knowledge, and

our after sales service is second to none. Our staff are available to assist you with your purchase of a machine from our range in store. The last thing you

RFor as long as most of us can remember owning our own home has been the great Australian dream and with some good financial know how, you can own your piece of Australia all that bit sooner. At the end of the day when it comes to owning your new home sooner, it is not rocket science - pay more than you have to and you will own your home sooner, however there are some other financial tips which can also help you achieve this goal.

Another great positive when considering paying off your home sooner, is that once you have your first property (or even part of) under your belt the opportunities for more investments may continue to blossom, with each property potentially giving you greater leveraging power and opportunity to invest further.

Here are a few tips to help you cut years off your mortgage.• Most mortgages are structured so that you pay off most of the interest in the early years. So if you’re able to make larger repayments in the earlier years of your loan, you’ll save a bundle on interest.

• Unless you have an interest-only loan, you usually pay both principal and interest on a home loan. On a typical 30 year mortgage, anything extra you pay in the first 5 to 8 years (when most of your payments go towards paying off the interest) will cut your interest bill and shorten the life of your loan.

• Assuming you have a mortgage that lets you pay extra, you should pay more and pay often. The interest charged on a $300,000 home loan at a rate of 7% over 30 years with monthly repayments is over $418,500. By paying off an additional $50 a month, you’ll reduce the interest bill by $38,000 and your loan term by 2 years and 3 months.

However, check if your loan allows you

to make extra payments, and if there are any fees for doing so. You may not be allowed to make extra payments on home loans with fixed rates. Even if you can make extra payments, there may be a limit on how much you can repay over the life of the loan. Find out if there are any fees or penalties if you pay off the loan early. Obviously, your Club consultant can assist with any of these enquiries.

• Every good plan should start with a budget and once this has been established, the simplest way to slice one third off the life of a 30 year loan is by changing the way money gets managed. To really knock 10 years off the life of a mortgage and save thousands in interest you could consider cancelling all ordinary savings accounts and streamline everything directly into your mortgage (salary credit). The mortgage can be used as a transactional account as well. ATM cards, credit cards and even cheque books can be linked to a mortgage account. By doing this all the additional funds deposited from each and every pay cycle start to reduce the interest being charged on the home loan account. Interest is being charged daily on the home loan, so the lower the balance the lower the interest charged at the end of a month. Rather than allow your mortgage to reduce at a principal and interest rate designed by your lender, which suits them, restructuring a mortgage to live out of allows the borrower to make principal repayments that include the entire pay packet. Your money sits in redraw so you can pull it out to cover your living expenses.

• Choosing a loan with a 100% Offset feature, can save you on your interest paid over the life time of home loan. Similar to our previous tip, this account will reduce the interest being charged on your home loan.

How to Cut Years off the life of your Mortgage

Howdy Folks!

What a beautiful start to October! Everybody is so energetic – vegies are being planted like crazy........don’t forget to stagger plantings so you lengthen your harvest time. Enjoy!

Guess what has reared their ugly heads again? – Yup, the Black Peach Aphid, those horrible little lice (yes, lice) that devastate our peaches and other stone fruit by sucking their blood (sap), excreting ‘honeydew’, infesting the roots and spreading both viral and fungal diseases to other plants. Yuk!Some say that after they have slurped the juicy young flower buds and leaves they move to your veggie garden an, where in warm climates this can happen all year. At least here in a chilly town they pupate in bark crevices and the base of the trees. Those of us who have met them know the look – dark coloured, clustered together on part of the tree. Double Yuk!So what do we do about this very serious pest? Prevention is a good place to begin. Keep weeds away as they often host aphids and disease. Encourage birds and predator insects to your garden. We have noticed Jenny wrens love our roses. Perhaps they like the aphids? ...... Nasturtiums, tansy, lavender, garlic, wormwood, marigolds are just some of the herbs that were mentioned....so maybe a blend of lots of different herbs and flowers and a few natives as a border to an orchard would

work well, remembering not to interfere with the ‘feeder roots’ at the trees drip line.

Keep your tress reasonably fed and watered and don’t ‘blow them out with too much tucker’ – they will get soft and more open to attack.Your nurseryman will help you with a good fertilizer program, but manure and organic material make wonderful mulch.

As for cure – WOW! To break it down, I guess there are 2 choices to be made- systemic or contact? Chemical or natural? Toxicity to other insects. (Not to mention us?)An oil spray in winters very beneficial. There are lots of these eco-oil products now. They are contact sprays (must cover insect to kill). You could try one of them but watch you don’t spray a predator insect by mistake. For a systemic (keeps killing), you might try confidor; it is one of the newer safer sprays. Apply after the bees have gone to bed. As hard as it is read the directions, or talk to your nursery person.

Good luck! Let us know how you go with the little beasties. I’m off to plant some prize tomatoes!

Happy gardeningCheers, Nancy

When choosing a machine, consider what you need and expect from a machine.1. Do you entertain a lot? 2. How many coffee’s do you need to make at a time?3. Will you be making mainly milk based coffee’s?4. How much bench space and height do you have?5. Measure up first6. Do you need to have a hot water arm for making long blacks or tea?Bezzera Gea 7. Your budget.

When deciding to purchase a machine you should also at some time, plan to purchase a grinder, either at the same time or in the future. The grinder is every bit as important as the coffee machine. A grinder gives you control over the grind of the coffee which directly impacts on the taste and flavour of the coffee. It allows you to keep your coffee fresher as you can then buy your coffee as whole beans and grind as required.

Nothing smells better than fresh coffee!

All machines purchased at The Bean Scene are covered by a 12 month warranty. We also offer ongoing service of your machine. Now you can have quality coffee at home……anytime!

Many people are finding it increasingly difficult to cope with the rising cost of living. The ‘EZY-GRO’ FOOD GROWING KIT has been developed to help meet that need.

There is also a growing concern about the amount of chemicals that are being used to produce the food that we buy. The ‘EZY-GRO’ kit gives you the practical know-how in simple terms and pictures so that anyone with even a very small space can grow fresh food with

practically no outlay, no chemicals and with minimum effort. The kit also includes 12 packets of seeds to get you started.

There are many reasons people give for not growing food; ‘I know nothing about gardening’, ‘everything I plant seems to die or the pests get it, ‘my soil’s no good’, ‘I live in a flat or a caravan’, and so the list goes on. The book explores these reasons which it calls ‘challenges’ and provides

‘solutions’. All you need is the will to do it.

Topics covered include:•Site analysis•How to improve your soil•Types of garden – ‘no-dig’, container, etc.•Easily grown vegetables and how to grow them•Saving seed•Controlling pests and diseases•Crop rotation•Kids activities…and much more

As the weather warms up this month there is a lot more things that can be prepared for or planted. Unless you are wanting a crop for preserving, such as tomatoes, smaller plantings at regular intervals is the best option. This will ensure a more consistent supply and spare you from a glut of produce.

1st WEEK• Sow seed of carrots and parsnips, lettuce, peas and spring onions.• Carrot seed is very fine and is loved by ants. To stop ants pirating seed mix it with some pepper before you sow it. Mixing some sand with the seed will make it easier to sow the seed more thinly.• Plant seedlings of cabbage, silver beet, lettuce• Prepare a spot for your first sowing of beans.

2nd WEEK• Sow seed of pumpkins, zucchinis and cucumbers in small pots or the bottom tray of an egg carton. Put one or two seed per pot or space. Keep the pots in a warm, sheltered spot outside and protect from possible late frosts. This will give you a head start when the weather is a bit warmer. Pumpkins, etc. resent any root disturbance so transplant carefully. If you are using egg cartons just separate and plant the whole cell. As with all seed/seedlings make sure that the soil in the containers does not dry out. Tomatoes and capsicums can also be raised the same way. They can be sown singly in egg cartons or a number of seeds in a larger pot. Sow the seed so the plants will be about 25mm (1”) apart when they grow. Just sow the seed on top of the soil mix and cover with a thin layer of mix. Press down with your hand and then give a soft watering. Tomatoes

are also very easy to grow from cuttings. We will get to that in later notes.• Prepare places for planting tomatoes.

3rd WEEK•Sow seed of peas and lettuce. Bush beans, sweet corn can be sown in warmer areas of Gippsland.• Plant early varieties of tomato if all danger of frost has passed.

4th WEEK• Plant seed potatoes. ‘Certified’ seed potatoes are best as they are certified to be free of diseases that affect potatoes. If you are unable to get ‘certified’ seed you can use pieces of ordinary potatoes. Make sure they have 3-4 ‘eyes’ on them. To reduce the risk of diseases building up in your soil do not plant a new crop of the same thing in the same spot for at least two seasons.• Prepare any available areas for later plantings.

FURTHER NOTESYour local nursery or garden centre will normally carry a good range of seeds, seedlings and ‘certified’ seed potatoes a t

this time of the year. There are many varieties of available: some for small spaces and some for large, some are bushy or ‘clumping’ and some need stakes or a place to run, some are ideal for fresh eating and some are good for preserving. Read the labels and then if you’re still not sure, ask for advice.

These notes are a general guide and some areas of Gippsland will be warmer and other areas will be cooler. Local knowledge is valuable so do not hesitate to talk to other gardeners or your local nursery for ‘local’ advice.

What’s On WhenCALLING ALL LOCAL CHEESE MAKERSThe Maffra Show is delighted to be having a cheese feature at this year’s show on October 22rd.

Local amateur cheese makers are invited to submit any type of home made cheese or yogurt and be in the running for the title ‘Champion Cheese maker of the Maffra Show.’ Cheeses will be judged by teacher Isobel Piper.

‘We have organised some great prizes and we know a number of talented locals do make their own cheeses. However, what is really exciting is that two cheese making lessons will be happening throughout the day.’ Said

event organiser Mark Humphris.

The Food and Wine court will be buzzing this year with Celebrity master Chef Peter Kritikides cooking with local students and demonstrating his prowess with local Buxton Beef..

‘We are looking forward to a fantastic day and ask the communitee to get behind a great event,’ said Mark.

CALF COMPETITON FOR JUNIORSA celebration of the tradition of farm children rearing calves and taking responsibility for their husbandry will be held in Maffra on October 22th with the town’s annual calf rearing competition. Held at the Maffra Show, the competition aims to reward animal husbandry and stockmanship rather than the finer points of the breed.

Children parade their calves and must have genuinely looked after them. The competition takes place at approx. 11 am on the day. “Now is the time

for children to begin selecting their calves for the competiton.” said event organiser Dennis Proud. “It is great to see the children recognised for the love of their animals.”

You’ll traverse changing landscapes – valleys, farmlands, old and regrowth forests, bushfire regeneration, managed forests. See abundant wildlife, including koalas, wallabies, echidnas and possums. Explore primeval rainforests of delicate tree ferns and towering mountain ash.

Take in amazing views of Bass Strait, South

Gippsland and Latrobe Valley. Discover hidden creeks, mossy gullies, picturesque waterfalls and pristine rock pools. And ponder forgotten moments of our early exploration, settlement, farming and logging history.

However, don’t wait until it’s finished if you want to visit now. There’s so much that you can do and see today. Grab your hiking boots and come see for yourself.

My aim as an Abstract Expressionist is to bypass self-censoring thought; this allows me to be influenced by layers deeper than the surface. I enter the studio without a preconceived idea and over time have learnt to trust in the process itself and be guided by instinct.

Mark follows mark, a rhythm is inspired and I become fully absorbed ‘in the moment’. The mark making is instinctual and spontaneous, though ’spontaneous’ slows right down and within it I work to a point of resonation, a climax which in turn will let me go.

At times I feel overwhelmed by ‘my place’ within the universe and I find myself working through this on the canvas, the process itself a spiritual comfort. On reflection I see that my work is strongly influenced by my environment and what is occurring in my life at the time.Through gestural movement, gravity and paint, the ‘essence’ of these moments is captured and offered as a form of communication to others. My journey within continues and I sense myself evolving through the work.

Many believe that my work is influenced by the great painter Jackson Pollock but if they looked more closely it would become clear that my own personal journey and studies in Transpersonal Art Therapy provide a powerful influence to my approach.

I work from my studio here in Crossover Victoria (West Gippsland), approximately 15 minutes from Warragul and 1.5 hours from Melbourne CBD.

My husband Chris helped me renovate the old dairy which is approximately 100 years old, into a truly wonderful and workable studio.

We have used a mix of new and recycled building materials, put in windows, levelled the floors, fixed the leaking roof and even added some insulation… WOW!

I just love coming down here in the morning with the dogs, I light the fire and feel completely within my element to create. It’s much harder walking back up to the house to put dinner on at the end of the day…

I geneally open by appointment but also partake in the ‘Open Studios’ here in West Gippsland held three times a year which is a great opportunity to do a studio hop.

So the cold has hit and your wondering what is the best thing to keep me warm during these cold winter days and nights. Well there’s a few little options for you to choose from that will warm your cockles and keep your toes from turning blue.

For starters wool is a great and traditional way to stay warm and cozy during winter. But these days wool isn’t just wool, there are different blend, mixes and types. From bamboo infused to Pure Marino and hand made sweaters. But does this mean there’s a difference between them, well yes, either it will be warmer pound for pound, cooler and more breathable or just smell less at the end of the day. Wool does have it’s draw back though. It’s weight, slow drying time and ability to make you itch can annoy you no end. But for a tried tested and true way for staying warm, even when wet, wool is a

great choice.

Say you wanted something light weight and fast drying for those travel or expedition purposes, Polar Fleece is your best friend. This light weight synthetic material is perfect for keeping you warm and insulated from the elements. Although it’s not so flame retardant (they tend to melt when burnt), they are reliable, long lasting and have a huge variety in styles and colors. They are also now being use as liners for other types of jackets, like snow or waterproof jackets. So the Polar Fleece is here to stay for a long time.

But say both of those options are no good for you, the wool itches you and your getting cold in your Polar Fleece, then Down is the way to go. Not only the warmest in terms of weight to warmth ratio, it’s the most

insulating garment of all three and will keep you warm through the worst mother nature can throw your way. It doesn’t like to get wet though so making sure that you keep it dry while you wear it is a must. For the traveler it becomes a no brainier as it packs up to almost nothing and is as light as a feather (no pun intended).

But should none of these work for you for any reason, I find the best solution is a hot cup of hot chocolate and an open fire. So don’t forget this winter, rug up and stay warm.

If you need anymore advice on this or any other hiking related questions please come check us out in our new place at Factory 1/12 June Ct Warragul, just opposite Dahlsens.

Happy WalkingChris

Optical CollusionDonna Kendrigan and Chris Henschke25 June - 24 August 2011Optical Collusion is a collection of pre-cinema optical devices, reworked with post-cinema technologies. The aesthetics of pre-cinema are placed within contemporary contexts. Tricks of perception mediated by technology are not new – magic lanterns and stereoscopes were popular entertainments in the Enlightenment and Victorian eras. Artists Henschke and Kendrigan employ these old techniques to subvert current optical and imaging technologies, and vice versa with an exhibition of hands-on, interactive artworks. The exhibition displays new works, funded by the Australia Council Visual Arts Board and Screen Australia.

You are invited to observe, describe, interpret and make connections while learning what to look for when approaching an artwork.

This is a free, family friendly event for all ages. No booking necessary and refreshments provided.

Following the launch on 2 October Slow Art Sundays will be held on the first Sunday of every month at the Gippsland Art Gallery, 68-

70 Foster Street, Sale at 2.00pm.

AVIATION MUSEUMSRecently two local aviators travelling to England spent some time visiting ex Royal Airforce airfields that had developed museums on these old bases. The museums were outstanding. These organisations are in the most part run and administered by volunteers and are a credit to the people involved.

The aircraft and equipment from times long gone have been preserved, and indeed some aircraft are still flying, even some dating back to pre 1920. Visitors arriving by the bus load spend hours wandering around absorbing the aviation and other military memorabilia, can buy light snacks, coffee, etc and gifts or souvenirs at most of these venues. It is very likely that the visitor will spend many hours in such a fascinating environment and leave with much respect for the aviators of that bygone era.

West Sale airfield is an ex- military airfield and has the potential to have this type of facility established on its grounds. The Gippsland Armed Forces Museum is already established on the airfield.

It would be interesting to see what support could be available from the Wellington Shire, volunteers and contributors. We only need to visit the Motor Museum at Maffra to see what can be done in our region.

LATROBE VALLEY COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL This year we have two outstanding local artists performing as well as other respected artists of renown. The feature act McAlister Kemp supported Alan Jackson on his tour of Australia January. We look forward to attracting visitors to our as well as bringing talented artist here. Federation Picnic at Maffra – Sunday, 23rd. October

Last year, Gippsland Vehicle Collection hosted the first ‘Federation Picnic at Maffra’. GVC is a member of The Federation of Veteran, Vintage & Classic Vehicle Clubs. The Federation’s objective is to foster, assist and promote clubs & organizations involved with Veteran, Vintage & Classic vehicles.

Last year was a great success, and we are looking forward to consolidating on that this year. The Picnic is an opportunity for owners of Veteran, Vintage & Classic vehicles to bring their vehicles along to GVC, 1a Sale-Maffra Road, Maffra; to enjoy a relaxed family orientated picnic in our grounds. Entry to the Picnic will be free to all entrants. There is a discounted entry fee to our Museum on the day. As well as the display of vehicles in the grounds, there will be presentations from some of our local Heritage and Craft groups and private individuals, as well as a woodworking display from Gippsland Woodcraft Group.

We are also running the annual ‘Melbourne to Maffra’ (‘M 2 M’) rally on the same weekend; Saturday, October 22nd. and Sunday, October 23rd., to give the rally entrants a chance to join our picnic as well, likewise

giving our ‘Picnic’ participants an opportunity to see the ‘Rally’ entrants & their vehicles.

We will again be seeking the assistance of as many of our volunteers as possible to make this a good weekend & a great ‘Picnic’ on Sunday. Do not miss this event: Mark your diary now !

A lot to see at Maffra Shed“The Maffra Shed” Is becoming a regular must do visit for Gippsland residents as well as tourists, with its changing displays each four month’s and an increasing number of Car Clubs and Vintage Rallies now coming to Gippsland to visit this attraction, it is really worthwhile watching out for their special events. These are a treat for all visitors not just car enthusiasts.

Their current “Sensational Seventies” display will run throughout October and this display is a

ripper. With local product from Holden, Ford & Chrysler, a variety of Japanese imports which first became popular during the 70’s and a smattering of British & European performance and luxury imports. The vehicle display is nearly upstaged by the recreated seventies kitchen & lounge room, a real trip down memory lane for those who can remember the time.

October is a busy month at the Museum with their Melbourne to Maffra Rally (M2M) beginning at Akoona Park, Berwick at 8am on Saturday 22nd, and the Federation Picnic at Maffra on Sunday 23rd Oct. This

would be a great time to visit as you get the bonus of seeing a lot of visiting vehicles.

Early in November the display will change over to a “Fabulous Fords” display with some really exciting cars promised for this display. With such a broad range of vehicles produced by Ford this should also be a must see, and after their 70’s display we have high expectations.

Gippsland Vehicle Collection who run “the Shed” are growing

quickly with over 350 members and attracting over 10,000 visitors last year. The committee are now considering the purchase of the building they have been leasing from dairy Co-Operative, Murray Goulburn. This small not for profit group have now won Wellington Regional Tourism awards 3 years in a row, they are a real success story right here in Gippsland, drop in and have a look.

2011 sees the allocation of an extra meeting on Caulfield Cup Day in Traralgon on Sat 15 Oct. The Cargo Lounge Club’s Celebration Raceday is set in a very casual environment with a sports club theme. Shorts and thongs are fine! It’s part of Country Racing’s Team on the Turf Raceday promotion so we will have lots of fun including an all inclusive area for all of our football and netball friends, bucks and hens parties. We’ll also have the TR FM netball shoot out and a mechanical bull riding competition with $300 cash up for grabs for each

Caulfield Cup Day is one of Australia’s great racedays and a day at Traralgon offers the opportunity to enjoy the day in a less stressful and busy environment that’s affordable for everyone.

This is a day, still early in the Spring Racing Carnival. This raceday offers patrons the opportunity to get to the track and enjoy some great racing and oncourse entertainment. It’s only two

days after the Moe Cup so the Valley’s interest in racing is alive and well. It’s a great alternative if you can’t get the day off on Moe Cup Day.

Reserve the heels etc for our next meeting – CreditCollect Ladies’ Day in two (Sat 29 Oct). Dress to impress on this day as Fashions are a highlight including Jeremy Fleming Jewellers Fashion on the Field. There is nothing to be gained by acting like children… so, one afternoon two sets of parents sit down to discuss a playground fight between their sons. If you enjoy beautiful sacred music, we are presenting a concert with the broad theme of Peace as represented in music from across six centuries.

The major work will be the moving mass by contemporary English composer Karl Jenkins : The Armed Man Suite- a Mass for Peace. Powerful in its simplicity, it contains four movements based on the traditional Latin mass and concludes with a stirring chorus in English which underlines the futility of war.

From a simple sixteenth century introit presented a capella by 3 young women from our chorale, to a repeat performance of the rhythmic and exciting Ramirez Gloria with percussion and mandolin with a duet from 2 of our tenors; from American spirituals to an early Magnificat by Buxtehude, we move through a variety of inspiring pieces

Small groups and solos feature in this concert. A highlight will be Christina Finley singing and playing her celtic harp. Joy

Parker and Janice Eshuis will sing a duet from Vivaldi’s Gloria, and there will be a mixed voice quartet from our younger members.

We promise you an enjoyable and inspiring concert, and hope you can come and bring your friends on either Friday evening October 14 at 8pm or Sunday October 16 at 2pm in Wesley of Warragul. Please see accompanying flier for further details or phone Jan on 56235650 or any Chorale member.

History Built in 1919, Lake Glenmaggie Dam is in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range in Gippsland at the junction of the Macalister River and Glenmaggie Creek in the Wellington Shire.

The Lake Glenmaggie Weir with deep arms and a surface area of approximately 15 square kilometres, was built primarily for irrigation, and today is very popular for water sports such as skiing, powerboat racing, canoeing, sailing and fishing.

The remains of the original township of Glenmaggie remain under the Lake, fences and cattle yards visible when the Lake is at its lowest.

•The Glenmaggie Township is located on the North West edge of the lake with approximately 175 dwellings. •The Coongulla Township on the Eastern side has approximately 256 dwellings.•Both boost of their Community halls and the activities provided for the young and the old. •Although Coongulla and Glenmaggie are less than 3ks apart as the crow flies, it is a 20km by road between the townships.

Places to See and Things to Do •The Lake Glenmaggie Weir Wall area provides a pleasant picnic area with BBQ’s and children’s playground. There is also an Information Centre that provides interesting historical information and photos. When the Weir Wall Gates are opened it makes a spectacular site spilling into the river valley below.

•Fish are plentiful

throughout the Lake and Rivers: - Bass, Eels, Spiny Freshwater Crayfish, Blackfish, Redfin and Brown Trout are all common. Bass and Trout fishing is usually at its best in early spring and late autumn. Annually many slower streams are stocked with fish, but most are self-sustaining. •The Macalister River at Licola (45 minute drive) is regularly stocked with Trout to ensure good fishing in throughout season. There is easy access by vehicle to most of the rivers meandering through some spectacular scenery.•The views from the Pinnacles with its unique firetower are breathtaking (Not suitable for small vehicles).•A drive on Billy Goats Bluff Track will be forever etched in memory (Experienced 4x4 only). During the winter months, the snow is often accessible just beyond Licola and offers a fun family day. The construction of Gippsland Centre Sale’s new Parents Room facility has been named the Small Commercial Project of the Year by the Housing Industry Association and the Building Commission.

Sale company PR Custom Builders took out the coveted award at Friday night’s South East Victoria Regional Housing Awards.

It is the second year in a row PR Custom Builders has won this award for its commercial building projects.

PR Custom Builders director Peter Reeves paid tribute to his small team of builders and local sub-contractors who worked long hours and provided a high quality of workmanship.

“We were on tight deadlines for this project, so without the co-operation of all the trades we simply wouldn’t have been able to deliver on time,” he said.

“Our staff and sub-contractors worked into the early hours of the morning on a few occasions, so we could have the facility safe and open during the day for shoppers.

“It was a juggling act at times, but with fantastic support from Centre management and the trades, it’s now a great facility.”

The HIA-Building Commission annual awards recognise and reward excellence in the building industry throughout Australia.

Entries are judged by a team of highly experienced building

experts and include on-site inspections of the building works to see for themselves the quality of workmanship and care taken when considering all relevant aspects of a building project.

The Parents Room project will now automatically vie for the Victorian Small Commercial Project of the Year Award against other projects throughout the state.

The winner of that award will be announced at Crown Palladium on 4 November.

PR Custom Builders was also a Runner-Up for the Custom Built Home $350,000-$500,000 category for a home in Starlings Rd, Woodside which was completed earlier this year.

These two are a couple of icons of the food and catering business with over 35 years of experience in restaurants and function venues from Frankston to South Melbourne to East Drouin and now to Cowwarr.

Helena’s philosophy is all about serving “Real Food”.“Over the years we have all watched all the food

fashions come and go.

Getting out of the city has been a life saver. No more of that nonsense with plates the size of football fields where you have to send out a search party to find some tiny morsel of something supposedly edible that you can barely recognise” says Helena “ Food is for eating, enjoying and sharing with mates and people you care about. And it’s especially about taste. There’s no point fiddling with some obscure ingredient for 12 hours if it ends up tasting like a piece of cardboard”.

“ We see the move to Cowwarr as the culmination of our lifelong ambition to own and run a good country pub.”

Our time in Drouin has reinforced all our beliefs about getting amongst people who share our approach to no nonsense dining. When you leave my table I want you to feel like the world is a happy place. Real Food for Real People” is the new direction for the Cowwarr Cricket Club Hotel.

This was the England of Queen Victoria and ‘Victorianism’ had its strict moral codes of earnestness, respectability, duty, character, hard work and thrift. It also had its social and moral evils, workhouses, slums, child labour, and harsh punishment for petty crimes, including transportation to the Australian colonies. While Sam was doing his apprenticeship in London, Charles Dickens was writing Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol, both stinging social

criticisms of the times.

On completing his apprenticeship in 1845, Sam married Jane Farnden, also from Godalming. Sam was 24 years old and Jane 22. For the next five years, until leaving for Australia, it is likely that Sam learned carpentry and building, a trade which was to serve him well in Australia.

The Lady McNaughton sailed from London on 2nd February 1850 and reached Port Melbourne on 5th August, a voyage of six months. With them went their young son George (b 1846) and daughter Grace (b 1847). Sam and Jane’s third child, a daughter, was born at sea on 20th March 1850. They named her ‘Oceana’ in honour of her place of birth at Latitude 8 N. off Cape Verd (sic)

in the Lady McNaughtin (sic). 7

At that time, the 19,000 kilometre voyage to the Australian colonies was the longest regularly travelled sea voyage in the world. Wooden ships were built to run before the wind, so did not take the most direct route. Coming south from Britain, they left the coast of Africa in the vicinity of Cape Verde Islands, then veered south-west before the trade winds taking them almost to the coast of South America before turning south-east to landfall at Cape Town, then further south into the roaring forties with raging seas to

bring them to Australia from the west.

Port Franklin … then and nowFather and son combinations on boats were a common occurrence as it was a matter of economics to have a son as a partner rather than splitting the catch with a hired hand. Across generations, many of the sons followed in their fathers’ footsteps and ‘extended families’ become prevalent with many fishermen becoming related through marriages within the fishing families.

The Port Franklin fishermen established territories and areas, known as ‘shots’, within the inlet, which they unofficially claimed as theirs. When they left port they would head off to the part of the inlet they constantly fished, and had a ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ within their ranks that this was their fishing ground, although there were times when this agreement was not observed for various reasons.

The Second World War once again interrupted the Victorian fishing industry, and Port Franklin was no exception, with several fishermen leaving to serve overseas in conflict. After the war Corner Inlet fishing reached its peak, and through the 1950s and 1960s Port Franklin fishermen consigned large catches to the Melbourne fish market. In 1958 the fishermen of Port Franklin, Port Welshpool and Port Albert supplied the Melbourne wholesale fish market with 75% of the flounder caught in Victoria.

Descendants of early fishing families such as the Cripps, Soderlunds, Averys, Pettersons and Mattssons followed in their fathers’ and grandfathers’ footsteps to take the industry into the 1970s and 80s. It was a changing era, with the Government continuing to show added interest in an industry that was becoming increasingly regulated and pressurised into reducing the number of professional fishermen operating on Corner Inlet. To order a copy of this book by Neil Everitt, call Noela Cripps on 5686 2459 or email [email protected]

WONTHAGGI.........They said Wonthaggi would become a ghost town after the closing of the mines in December 1968, but the town has prospered and keeps on growing year after year.

Wonthaggi, is a name said to be derived from a local Aboriginal language and means either ‘home’ or ‘to pull along’. Wonthaggi is located 128 kms south-east of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia-

less than two hours drive from Melbourne. Travel along the South Gippsland Highway from Melbourne,

turning on to the Bass Highway. Then follow the road through Grantville, Bass and

Kilcunda before reaching Wonthaggi.

The explorer William Hovell discovered black-coal deposits at nearby Cape Paterson in 1826, but early attempts at mining were unsuccessful. Coal deposits at Wonthaggi were known by the 1850’s, but development was delayed until 1909, when a

labour strike in Newcastle slowed the production of coal and undeveloped coal fields were opened up. Between 1910 and 1968, black coal was mined from Wonthaggi’s network of underground mines.

Parts of the old mine are now reopened for guided tours. The State Coal Mines created a thriving industrial settlement for miners and their families during those years. Since the mines closure, Wonthaggi has developed into a large commercial centre, Places of interest in the town include the former railway station which houses the Wonthaggi Historical Society.
