2 - MBA DIMENSIONS

For years I have attended the Building Industry Association of

Washington Board Meetings as a representative for the Master Builders

Association. Over and over people ask me the same questions. What are you guys doing over there and how does our association do the same? The truth is, as an Association and its members are pretty committed to working together to achieve goals. This unity has gotten us through the past few years and will continue us on a strong path for the future. A great example of how our members can come together was our first Annual Chili Cook-Off held September 18. Our Board of Directors and Strategic Plan was looking for a low-cost, high impact incentive for members to learn more about our member benefit partners. After a lot of brainstorming, we emerged with a very successful and fun event.

This event could not have been done without the help of our Committee and Council members who volunteered to make the chili and take the opportunity to promote themselves, and the hard work of Committee Chair Cathi Mahan. I would also like to thank the evening’s drink sponsor AAA Kartak Glass & Closet Corp. Thank you to our Committees and Councils for participating:

There were also many Benefit Partners in attendance. Please take a look at their discounts, programs and rebates in Joe Zehnder’s article this month or by logging onto mbapierce.com.

So many members put time into creating this successful event. It’s not something you see at every association. The energy in the room was exciting, and it was one of our best attended events of the entire year. I encourage you to attend our next meeting on October 18th at the Varsity Grill. The PR Committee will be holding an Oktoberfest networking event, with games and prizes. RSVP today!

4 - MBA DIMENSIONS

The Master Builders has been part of my life for the past ten years

and it is truly hard to leave such an inspirational group. Through good times and bad, the Master Builders

has given me a lot of great memories. When I first stepped into the role of Executive Officer, I was very pleased to be a part of an industry that shares my view that everyone should be able to own their own home. As I learned more about the inside workings of the Association, I was impressed by the dedication many of our volunteers have to support the MBA in working with local government to help builders keep homes affordable for the consumer. I’m most proud of the political stature the MBA has in Pierce County and feel that I had influence in creating that. This is a good organization with a great staff-please continue to support it. While Tiffany may not have my affinity for sweater vests (At one board meeting someone asked Mike Fast how many vests he thought I owned, his answer was “all of them”.) I know she will lead this association well. I could not think of a better successor. You have a strong staff behind her as well, who have made my job much easier! As I said before it hasn’t always been easy. When Duke York was encouraged to run for President he was assured that his year would contain nothing but blue skies. After about six months and numerous encounters with the then leadership at BIAW he left me a very short voice mail saying only “blue skies my a_ _”. Still, we’ve been through a lot together as an Association and I look forward to seeing what you can do in the future. Thank you to everyone who attended my farewell party on September 30th. It meant a lot to me to see so many faces, especially those of you who are already retired that came by! I am excited to be joining you. For those of you who weren’t able to attend I still plan on being involved in the community and on a smaller level MBA, so please feel free to say hi anytime. Thank you.

“Don’t let Mike hold your raffle tickets – and don’t ask me why!” - Dave Graff

“The MBA has benefitted from Mike’s talents and standing in our community during his time at MBA. He brought the association to a new level and cultivated a strong staff that will keep MBA in good stead into the future. Mike will be missed by our members as well as those who worked with him as elected leaders and industry allies. “- Rick Hjelm

“Interesting math at times and sweater vests. That is all Mike and I have to say. Thank you Mike! Best wishes to you.” - Michael and Carolin Fast

Prescription drug abuse

is an epidemic in Washington state.

There are more deaths annually from prescription drug abuse than from meth, cocaine, and heroin combined. What’s causing this epidemic? Drugs like OxyContin, Vicodin, and Methadone are now commonly prescribed for pain. Painkillers offer relief to millions of Americans but present a hidden danger. These kinds of prescription drugs are called “opiates.” The American Heritage Dictionary defines “opiate” as a sedative narcotic, “[C]ontaining opium or one or more of its natural or synthetic derivatives.” In a way, these drugs are the cousins of a better known—and more feared— drug: heroin. But unlike heroin, most people don’t know how potentially addicting and dangerous prescription opiates can be. Some recreational users crush prescription painkillers and then ingest them in order to bypass the time-release function of the medications. This provides a somewhat immediate, and sometimes deadly, high. When overdosed, prescription painkillers can cause a significant decrease in lung function and death. They can also be lethal when they’re combined with other prescribed or over-the-counter drugs. High-profile deaths include actor Heath Ledger, who died from a lethal combination of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine. Teenagers are increasingly experimenting with drugs commonly found in their parents’ medicine cabinets. According to the Healthy Youth Survey, 12 percent of 12th graders used prescription pain medications to get high in the past 30 days. The same survey also shows that an alarming number of younger kids experiment with these drugs. That’s why it’s critical to learn how to properly safeguard and dispose of your medications. It is all too easy for a substance intended to help us to cause us harm. If medicines are kept in the home, they

need to be kept under lock and key. Whether you are a remodeler or new home builder, consider installing a locked cabinet in the home where prescription drugs can be safely stored. Remodelers need Green Education

Now more than ever it is time to start re-evaluating our craft and

to make sure we are offering the most value to our client’s remodels. Which makes me ask, why haven’t so many of us considered building green?

With the pressing need to increase energy and resource conservation, green remodeling is quickly gaining in popularity. We also have one of the longest standing green programs here at MBA of Pierce County with our Built Green® program. A home can be considered green when energy efficiency, water and resource conservation, sustainable or recycled products, and indoor air quality considerations are incorporated into the process of home building. The increased availability of education to builders and remodelers, growing consumer awareness and the increasingly popular market for sustainable, environmentally friendly and recycled building products has created a huge need for green buildings in your business. According to a recent survey, more than half of the members of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), who build 85 percent of the homes in this country, were incorporating green practices into the development, design and construction of new homes by the end of 2007. The Certified Green Professional through NAHB is an exclusive designation is designed to teach building industry professionals strategies for incorporating green building principles into homes using cost-effective and affordable options. When you become a CGP, you gain a greater understanding of techniques, knowledge of methods to achieve higher energy efficiency, marketing and sales tools specifically tailored to the green building, and the business practices that foster success. You’ll

be able to demonstrate to consumers the enhanced environmental impact, increased performance and health benefits of green homes to potential buyers. Earning the CGP shows customers your commitment to staying current with industry innovations- including green building. Builders, remodelers, and other industry professionals must have at least two years of building industry experience to apply for the Certified Green Professional designation. I encourage all of you to look into the profitability of adding green building to your business. The MBA currently has openings in classes this November that can help you reach your green building goals. Contact Kawehi Marshall today for more information at 253.272.2112 ext. 105 or see this month’s inserts to register today!

There is much to report on in Spike land, hence the reference to

potpourri. First, thank you to all the

members who participated in the Chili Cook-Off on September 20th. It was a great event with much member camaraderie. The Membership and Spike Committees won the prize for Most Creative, the PR Committee won the prize for Best Chili, and the Design Professionals Council took home the prize for Team Spirit. Kudos to Cathi Mahan for heading up this event. Besides the tremendous member camaraderie and friendly competition, there was much to learn from the numerous Member Benefit Partners who set up booths and provided loads of information concerning the benefits they offer to our members. Many of the Member Benefits Partners provided generous raffle items to boot. The Member Benefit Partners included: EPK/Capital Benefit Services representing the BIAW Health Trust; the Group Retrospective Insurance Program (GRIP); Approach Management Services; SMART Education Centers; Colonial Life; Associated Petroleum Products; Building Industry Association of Washington; BIAW Rebate Program; Sunset Chevrolet (GM $500 rebate); Titus Will Chevrolet @ Parkland (GM $500 rebate); Lowe’s Home Improvement – Puyallup; Paychex; Liberty Mutual Insurance; Hertz Rental; Office Depot; Home Builder Purchasing Program; Staples Advantage; and TalentWise. We appreciate your participation. Second, the continued efforts of our members in the recruitment of new members should be recognized. As of late September, there are: 37 Spike Candidates, i.e. members who have recruited at least one person, but less than six; 13 Spike Members working their way to achieving Life Spike status, which is achieved at 25 Spike credits; and 46 Life Spikes. And, two of our Life Spikes have more than 500 Spike credits – Dave Graff with 584 and Steve Garitone with 507.75. Thank you to all you recruiters as your efforts are essential in maintaining and continuing to improve the association. Finally, we are presently planning our annual Spike Party, which will actually take place in January 2012 to avoid the busy upcoming holiday season. On Saturday, January 21st we are going to have an evening social at the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts (located at 9th and Broadway in

Spike Potpourri

downtown Tacoma) and attend the hilarious show: Late Nite Catechism: ‘Til Death Do Us Part. The show offers lessons on the Sacraments of Marriage and Last Rites, including a wacky version of The Newlywed Game. So, bring along your sweetie and your sense of humor for a session with the feistiest couples counselor around. Created in 1993, this is the longest continuously running show in Chicago history, and the longest one-character comedy in off-Broadway history. We are fortunate to have the show here in Tacoma and we hope you will join us.
