Advancing HVAC&R to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world.

President’s Message

We had a great start to this year last month at our first chapter meeting. Mr. Wayne Kirsner of Kirsner Consulting Engineering Inc. gave a great presentation on a water hammer accident. We all learned some valuable lessons from a tragic accident and the potential dangers we face in our industry. He discussed some steam design guidelines that left the audience thirsty for knowledge as the meeting ended.

Looking ahead to this month’s presentation we will be hosting a lunch meeting in

our usual location at ASHRAE Headquarters on Tuesday October 11th starting at 11:30AM. This month’s topic is titled “Geothermal Heat Pump Fundamentals”. Our presenter will be Mr. Chuck Hammock of Andrews, Hammock, & Powell, Inc. who has worked on both conventional (full) Geothermal and hybrid applications. After lunch, Mr. Hammock will provide a more detailed discussion on “Geothermal Heat Pump (GHP) / Heat Exchanger (GHX) Engineering”. For those engineers looking to go beyond the basics and have a more in depth course this is the place to be. This seminar will start at 1:30 PM and is a two and a half hour course.

Our October meeting will have an emphasis on Research Promotion. Research Promotion is the lifeblood of our organization. Last year the Atlanta Chapter raised over $44,000, and our goal is to exceed on that mark this year. We look forward to recognizing all of our supports for the 2010-2011 campaign year and welcome all support for this year’s fundraising efforts.

The Chapter will be hosting our semi-annual golf tournament this fall at River Pines Golf Course. The event will be held on Tuesday October 25th at 9AM. I encourage all members to support this event whether you are an avid golfer or a spectator there are plenty of ways to get involved. We have plenty of hole sponsorship opportunities for members who are just looking to give a contribution to ASHRAE Research or ways to volunteer for the event. So get you’re A-team together and come out to support ASHRAE research. Please contact Mr. John Pruitt, the research promotion chair for more information at [email protected].

We are in the process of finalizing the new 2011 Atlanta ASHRAE product directory. If your company has not submitted its application, please send it in ASAP as we will be going live with the new searchable on-line directory. Applications can be sent directly to me and payments can be made at http://www.ashraeatlanta.org/ProductDirectorySignup. Make sure that you also make plans to attend the Holiday Party on December 8th at Opera in midtown, the ASHRAE Winter Conference in Chicago at the end of January, our monthly YEA event on October 20th, and much, much more… Don’t forget to RSVP for all these events by logging onto the Atlanta ASHRAE website at: http://www.ashraeatlanta.org I look forward to seeing you at our next chapter event. Chapter Meeting Notice Tuesday, October 11th, 2011 – 11:30 AM Geothermal Heat Pump Fundamentals

Lunch Meeting

Mr. Charles W. Hammock Jr., P.E., LEED AP, CGDAndrews, Hammock, & Powell, Inc.

Macon, GA  During the past 30 years Mr. Hammock has been extensively involved in the engineering of mechanical HVAC systems for governmental, industrial, commercial and institutional clients and facilities throughout the United States and beyond. Systems designed and installed for these projects range from small DX split system heat pumps to the installation of large central chilled and hot water systems and steam plants. His specialty and passion in the HVAC systems arena is centered on innovative deployments of Geothermal Heat Pump (GHP) systems for governmental, institutional, and commercial clients. He is one of the three founders of Andrews, Hammock and Powell, Inc., a Consulting Engineering firm established in 1988 and located in Macon, GA For the last several years, Chuck’s efforts have been focused on functioning as Principal-in-Charge, Project Manager and Department Head for the Geothermal Engineering department of AH&P’s HVAC Division. Projects have included both conventional (full) Geothermal and hybrid applications. He has been involved with the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA) and successfully passed their Certified Geothermal Designer (CGD) exam and accordingly is one of a few Professional Engineers (PE) in the US or Internationally that also holds the CGD credential. His is actively involved with the American Ground Water Trust (AGWT) in their pursuit of insuring GHPs are deployed around the country in a responsible manner. He lectures around the country for AGWT on the Fundamentals of GHP systems and has lectured internationally. In 2010, he was nominated and elected to serve on the AGWT’s National Board of Directors, a position he gratefully accepted.

ASHRAE, AHR Expo Return to Chicago for 2012 Winter Conference

ATLANTA—Registration is open for ASHRAE’s 2012 Winter Conference in Chicago where attendees have the chance to discuss and examine the latest topics in the building industry, such as high performing buildings and integrated design, as well as participate in technical tours; attend ASHRAE Learning Institute courses; earn professional credits; and obtain ASHRAE certifications.

The 2012 Winter Conference takes place Jan. 21-25 at the Palmer House Hilton. The International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Expo®, held in conjunction with the Winter Conference, will run Jan. 23-25. The Expo, www.ahrexpo.com, is held at the McCormick Place.

In keeping with ASHRAE’s goal of continuing education the Conference offers over 200 Professional Development Hours, as well as Continuing Education Units, which can be applied toward a Professional Engineering license.

The technical program features more than 90 programs and 300 speakers addressing energy modeling applications; integrated design; healthcare, laboratories and data center applications, among others; operations and maintenance; high performance buildings; as well as refrigeration and systems and equipment sessions. Additionally, there is a new “mini-conference” on Installation, Operation & Maintenance of HVAC Systems built within the Technical Program. The O&M mini-conference is scheduled on Jan. 22-23. The full Technical Program, which will be announced later this month, offers the opportunity to earn a year’s worth of PDHs, NY PDHs, AIA LUs and LEED AP credits.

The Chicago Virtual Conference is included with a paid Conference registration—comp and single day registration excluded—and includes on-demand access to all speakers’ audio presentations synced to their presentations. Attendees and speakers can post comments on the presentations for a two-week period. Those not attending the Chicago Winter Conference in person may register for the Virtual Conference only. Register at www.ashrae.org/chicagovirtual.

Five Professional Development Seminars and 15 Short Courses are offered to help industry professionals stay current on HVAC technology, including how to apply the newest ASHRAE standards. The ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI) is offering a new half-day short course on the basics of combined heating and power systems, as well as updates to the full-day professional development seminars focusing on Standards 62.1, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality, and 90.1,

Additionally, ASHRAE offers a special administration of all six certification examinations on Jan. 25: Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP), Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP), Commissioning Process Management Professional (CPMP), High-Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP), Healthcare Facility Design Professional (HFDP) and Operations & Performance Management Professional (OPMP). ASHRAE’s certification program recognizes industry professionals who have mastered knowledge and skills reflecting best practices in certain aspects of building design and operations. More information on each certification can be found at www.ashrae.org/chicagoexams.

ASHRAE Conference technical tours include the North Central College Residential and Recreation Center, Loyola University Information Commons, the University of Chicago Mansueto Library and Rush University Medical Center Central Energy Plant.

To register and for complete Conference information, visit www.ashrae.org/chicago.
