A very special thank you goes out to the many parents and students who attended our “Meet the Teacher” evening on

September 15. The partnership with parents at Springfield Heights School is a source of valued support and encouragement for

all SHS staff. We remain committed to providing quality learning opportunities for all students.

Each year, a school improvement plan is developed to address the diverse learning and social/emotional needs of the students in

our school. School priorities for the 2011-2012 school year are:

1. Improve school climate and safety for all.

2. Improve technology skills for teachers and students to enhance teaching and learning.

3. Improve student reading and writing skills.

Each school priority includes a list of indicators to determine if we are making progress as well various forms of

collecting data to collect evidence of progress.

A number of strategies are planned for the 2011-2012 school year to help us reach expected outcomes. Some of the strategies

include:

1. Monthly multi-age family group sessions involving mini-lessons that focus on kindness/love .

2. Teacher PD and learning will focus on the books “The Daily 5-Fostering Literacy

Independence in the Elementary Grades” and “The Café Book-Engaging All Students in Daily

Literacy Assessment and Instruction” to increase achievement in reading and writing.

3. K-Kids to plan various service projects for the community (Free the Children/We Day).

4. Staff will participate in Literacy with ICT lessons (Technology for Today’s Teaching

Project) Year 3. Staff will focus on Excel and creating class Web Pages.

5. Staff will develop and implement Phase #2 (halls, lunch hour) of a school-wide matrix for

behavior.

All staff work collaboratively throughout the year on three main priority-area committees to

achieve results through various innovative and creative strategies. Copies of our 2011-2012

School Improvement Plan are available at the office.

Halloween Activities

Springfield Heights School will be celebrating the fun and festivities of Halloween. On Monday, October 31st at 1:30 p.m. Kindergarten-Grade 3 students are

invited to dress in costumes for our annual Halloween Parade and assembly in the gym. Costumes must be appropriate for K-3 students within a school setting. Costumes and accessories cannot be violent in nature (i.e.: knives, swords, axes, guns, etc.) or appear scary to small children. Grade 4-6 students will be going to Wheelies for the afternoon. Parents are invited to our SHS Halloween Assembly at 1:30 pm

Safety Patrols

Children are crossed by Safety Patrols at busy corners at the following times: 8:40 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 12:35 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Each patrol will be at their post for 10 minutes. Patrols also supervise the Kindergarten entrance area at the front of the school. In addition, patrols provide assistance on school buses. Please emphasize to your children the importance of their cooperation with all patrols.

Superintendent announces his retirement

Dennis Pottage, superintendent and CEO of River East Transcona School Division, has announced he will be retiring Jan. 31, 2012.

Mr. Pottage came to River East Transcona in March 2006 from Regina Public Schools, where he was superintendent of school administrative services.

“Mr. Pottage’s retirement announcement didn’t come as a complete surprise, but we are sorry to see him go. He has been a very fine educational leader for this division, and we are grateful for his service,” said Peter Kotyk, chair of the board of trustees. Mr. Kotyk said the board of trustees has launched a nationwide search for Mr. Pottage’s replacement. “We are optimistic we will have some excellent candidates who will want to lead Manitoba’s second largest school division, a division that takes pride in fulfilling its promise to educate students to be inspired, skilled, responsible citizens.”

On Thursday, September 29th our Cross Country Run Club represented Springfield Heights School at the RETSD Turkey Trot. It was a beautiful fall day and there were no wild turkey sightings this year in Birds Hill Park, however, many of our students gobbled up top ten place results. This year our Cross Country Club had 158 students participate in this event. The students had 6 practice runs at lunch hours in September in preparation for this meet. They worked hard, setting personal goals and learned the concept of pacing themselves when running. Congratulations to all students on a great overall performance!

Hello Springfield Heights Parents & Guardians, Do you know what the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is? It’s every single parent and guardian of a Springfield Heights student, working together to make sure our kid's experience here at Springfield Heights is great. You’re probably asking: “But, what does that mean?” As parents, we fundraise, we organize, we volunteer - we help. Because of PAC, we can pay for adult supervisors, for when their kids need to stay at the school for lunch (for a nominal fee of course). Because of PAC, our kids can get fresh milk with their lunches. Because of PAC, teachers can organize extra field trips during the year or order extra books and supplies. PAC also has several sub-committees dedicated to our trilingual diversity:

The EUBP, dedicated to the Ukrainian language and culture,

The FIPC, dedicated to the French language and culture, and

The EPAC, dedicated to the English language and the various cultures contained within the English Program. This year, if you want to help, or find out some more information, or give us feedback/ideas, come out to one of our meetings. Our next one is on Wednesday, November 2nd. 'EUREKA' Family Math & Science Fun Join us for a FREE family event on Thursday, Oct. 20th, 6:30 - 8:00 pm This will be the English Program's first event of the year. Welcome back to school everyone! Hello, my name is Mme. Finlay and I am the new K-3/4 music teacher here at Springfield Heights School this year. We have had a great start to our music classes so far! All students did a wonderful job singing “Run, Terry Fox, Run” at the Terry Fox assembly on September 28th – bravo everyone! Our K-4 winter musical may seem far away, but rehearsals will begin as early as November 1st. This year, our winter concert dates are December 19th and 20th. More details to follow in the next school newsletter. Thank you so much to students, staff and parents for welcoming me to Springfield Heights School – I am so happy to be here and I look forward to working with you all this year!

Join the Bag Up Challenge!

Springfield Heights School will again partake in Take Pride Winnipeg’s Bag Up Challenge. Please

send your unwanted plastic bags to school so that our K-Kids can recycle them. In turn, our

school will receive Wham-O Frisbees for use in physical education activities and

possibly a park bench. All bags need to be clean and dry.

Please help us to support this exciting recycling initiative!

The K-Kids

19 Springfield Heights grade 5 & 6 students are preparing right now for our

RETSD special concert with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. We are

working on choral pieces from the Lion King, Canadian composers, as well as

popular music from Beethoven! The concert contains music performers in choir and band from Grades 4

through 12 throughout our division. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster for $15, so come and enjoy

an evening of music on Wednesday, November 2 @ 7:30 in the Concert Hall!

CHILDREN’S LITERACY TUTORING

PROGRAMS WHAT IT IS:

The LDA Manitoba provides a literacy tutoring program for children aged 6 – 11 who are experiencing academic difficulties in school due to a determined or suspected learning disability. The program is designed to provide one-to-one tutoring to help improve reading, writing, spelling and comprehension as well as to heighten the child’s academic confidence. Social skills will be addressed based on the needs of the child. HOW IT WORKS:

The program provides each child with: a trained literacy instructor, individualized lesson plans and a place to meet peers with similar needs. Parents are also involved through training sessions as well as the opportunity to observe and learn strategies they can use at home. COST:

The cost of the entire 9 or 10-week program (dependent on which program is recommended) is currently $150.00. TIMES AND LOCATION:

Fall programs run from the beginning of October and run through to mid-December. Spring programs will begin right after the Holidays and run through to Spring Break. Tutoring takes place at the Learning Disabilities Association at 617 Erin Street, Erin Square, just east of Polo Park. TO REGISTER:
