Taking this to the level of everyday life, what about a per- son who has not had a stroke but who is mired in negativity, or anger, what can they do to change their circuitry or their thinking? Dr. Taylor: First they have to be willing to pay attention to their circuitry. Anger is a great example because anger is a group of cells in the limbic system, the more emotional part of the brain. A trigger gets hit and when this happens things from the past are renewed. An example is when I was tickled as a child, I got very angry. Now as an adult if someone tickles me, I get really angry. But I have the ability to make a choice in how I respond. My natu- ral response does not have to be the only response I have. In the book you talk about the 90 seconds it takes to make a change in our thinking/feeling. Dr. Taylor: It takes 90 seconds from the time we have a thought that is going to stimulate an emotional response. When we have an emotional response it results in a physiological dumpage into our blood- stream. It flushes through and out of our body in less than 90 seconds. From the time I think the thought to the time I trigger the emotional circuitry to the time I have the physiological response come and go is all less than 90 seconds. It’s totally amazing. We can stay angry longer than 90 seconds but what we’re doing is restimulating the physiological response. We have the abil- ity to say, “Wait a minute I’m restimulating this. I feel it in my body. I recognize I am running it. I can choose to observe it instead of engaging it.” As soon as I do that, I am stepping outside of just running on automatic and I actually have a say in what is happening in my brain. Does this have to do with what you mention in the book as “stepping to the right?” Dr. Bolte: The two hemispheres of the brain are two very different places and they don’t share any cell bodies. They are completely separate entities. They process different kinds of information in different ways. As a result, they look at the world through different filters and I believe they have very different personalities. By now you are no doubt familiar with the principles of law of attraction and conscious creation, and have seen or read The Secret, and you are aware of using the power of positively directed thought to improve your life. But let’s be honest. How often do you remember to apply these? Maybe once or twice a month? Or when you come across something you really want to manifest, so you get busy visualizing? Have you really made it a way of life? Are you impatient to see things become reality, but the slowness of the process is making you crazy?

Practical Conscious Creation: The Key to Becoming a

Better, Faster Manifestor

You can’t get there from here if you don’t know where you’re going. Be very clear about what you want, and that your heart and head are in alignment. (i.e. your subconscious beliefs aren’t undermining your forward motion.) True clarity allows the molecules to form into a specific reality related to your intention. • Checking Your Mindset for Negative Thinking You’ve got to root-out any vibrations (thoughts, emotions) that are sabotaging your

Well, I have news for you. Transforming your life through conscious creation is not a sometime thing. It requires rewiring your thinking and your lifestyle; and it requires consistency. It mandates becoming proficient at practical conscious creation, applying the principles of conscious creation to everything you do; in decision making, energy management, relationships, attitude, mindset, rituals, activities, habits, communication, self-care, and daily chores. And when you do, the reward is in becoming a better, faster manifestor, day-by-day. And ultimately, enabling you to live a life of your choosing. In writing my first book, The Art of Conscious Creation, I began to apply “frequency management” to my life – managing the frequency level of my thoughts and emotions so that I would increase my success at manifesting – and indeed I could directly see the correlation between that and the realization of positive, successful

developments in my life. But, I often got caught up in daily activities and let my vigilance slip. Lo and behold, so did my consistency of manifesting what I wanted. So I realized that there had to be a way to inculcate the key principles in daily life, so much so that it would become a way of life, not an occasional thing, when you just happen to have time for a little meditation. And so practical conscious creation was born.Practical conscious creation isn’t a system. It’s simply applying the wisdom of the process to your daily activities. What are some of the key elements in practical conscious creation? • Setting Intentions/Visions In starting any project you want to clear a smooth pathway. Setting an intention is like laying your yellow brick road. It gives you and the universe a shared direction and destination. • Being Clear on Where You are Heading or What Outcome You’d Like to See Continued on Page 5

pathway. Negative thinking comes in a whole rainbow of

colors: fear, anticipating all the reasons things won’t happen, limitations, distrust, lack of self-confidence, feelings of unworthiness, blame, remembering the past experiences, needing to control, anger, etc.). • Selecting Your Energy and Applying It

As I sit in my study this morning I look out the window and see fog through the trees. I think about how we can live our lives buried in the fog and not know it. I think about the various periods in my life when I felt like I couldn’t see anything clearly and didn’t really know which way to go. It feels scary and uncomfortable when this happens but I have found that when I can ride out the foggy conditions, things get better. It’s like some mornings when I leave home and the sun is out. I get 10 miles down the highway and the fog is so thick, I feel like I’m driving in pea soup. I turn on my lights so other cars can see me, slow down, and keep driving. Before I know it, the fog clears and the sun is shining once again. There are several kinds of mental fog and none of them help us live life in the most satisfying way. There is the fog of indecision where we can’t make up our mind about what we will or won’t do. There is the fog of depression where we feel so inward turned and sorrowful that we can’t see the wondrous things or people in our world. There is the fog of anger, the fog of jealousy, the fog of sorrow and grief. When I catch myself living in foggy conditions, the first thing I do is acknowledge I am in the fog. There’s no use pretending it to be otherwise. I let myself stand

do something about the situation, do it and trust yourself to know the best route to take. If you can’t do anything about whatever is going on for you, then accept where you are and wait until you can do something. Waiting can bring excellent results. Embrace the fog. Fog is not a bad thing. I actually love foggy mornings. They make me feel very internally oriented, thoughtful, and cozy. I don’t think I would want to live in the fog all the time, but a little bit of it from time to time is welcomed. There is a nice cleansing feeling that comes when the fog leaves and the sun displays itself once again. The next time your life feels foggy, embrace it rather than trying to run away from it. The fog will lift eventually, it always does. And when it lifts you will discover what was around you all the time. You just weren’t ready to see it or the fog wouldn’t have been there. Befriend the fog.

Too many times, people try to make moves, sometimes big ones, while in the fog. Then they hope everything works out okay. As a general rule, things don’t work out. We need to have some degree of clarity in our lives before making important decisions. Sometimes when we’re in the fog and can’t see anything, our other senses become stronger. Spend some extra time listening in meditation or journaling, or drawing. Do something that will allow your guidance to come through for you. It’s only when we know where we are

that we can begin to think about being somewhere else. Too often we spend

our hours and days wistfully wanting to be anywhere other than where

we are. This is self-defeating behavior.

If you find yourself in a situation that feels foggy, give yourself some extra space rather than rushing into making a decision. Most of the time decisions can be delayed until clarity arrives. I have found that when I’m not clear on something, it means I don’t have enough information. If I wait awhile, the fog clears and the way becomes known to me. If an immediate action

is required and you can

in the fog and look around. Can I see anything through the fog, or is it so dense I can’t see anything? Can I move at all, or will I step into something or off a cliff? I have found that if I just stand in the fog and wait, eventually there will be the slightest clearing and I’ll be able to make out my surroundings.

The Meaning of Moles“Dear Jean, I’ve always been self-conscious about a mole by my eyebrow. My sister has a mole on the smile line near her nose. Do moles on people’s faces have any meaning?”

Jean’s reply: In Chinese face reading, moles are said to be signs of enhanced power. What kind of power depends on the meaning of the part of the face that they mark. First we need to understand that in face reading, a mole needs to stick out and be flesh-colored in order to be called a mole. If it’s a flat dark spot on the face, it’s not considered a mole. For Caucasian people, moles have to be the same color as the skin on the rest of their faces. For people of other races, often moles are slightly darker than the rest of their faces, but are still defined as moles. To understand what a mole near your eyebrow means, we first need to understand the messages the eyebrows reveal. The eyebrows show your drive, intensity of focus, self-confidence, and how action-oriented you are. If your eyebrows are full and/or long, these qualities are emphasized in your nature. Strong eyebrows also indicate an inherent practicality and desire to get things done – to set goals and achieve them – and the potential for feeling frustrated or angry if you’re blocked from moving forward. If you already have strong eyebrows and also have a mole there, you probably work hard and play hard. In work, you’ll focus intently on any project, though you really love short-term jobs when you can get something done and move on. In play, you may develop a hyper-focus on things

like computer games and find it hard to pull yourself away. Overall, you may well be someone who wants to make this world a better place and has some good ideas for how to do that. If, on the other hand, your eyebrows are sparse, a mole there can help empower you with a greater supply of confidence, drive, and practicality than you’d have otherwise. As for your sister, what you call “smile lines” (nasolabial folds), the Chinese call “Purpose Lines” and they are examples of good wrinkles, the kind we’re all supposed to get. Purpose lines develop as an indication that someone is on their path in some way, being true to themselves and creating an authentic life. They don’t mean that everything is perfect in that person’s world, but at least they’re going in the right direction. These wrinkles are not

due to aging; you can see them on young people who’ve found their way early in life, such child actors, for instance, if that’s their

life path. A mole by the Purpose Lines increases that person’s attention to their need to live meaningfully. Professionally they’ll yearn to find their real life purpose, and in personal relationships, the desire to be true to themselves and not compromise is enhanced. But the boost in

power that moles provide also creates potential for challenges. Your sister may struggle with perfectionism, or not being able to settle into a certain career or relationship because of the lingering doubt that this is the absolute right one, that the one that’s really for her is around the next corner. A mole by the eyebrow increases the possibility that you’ll struggle with frustration and anger in your life, or can turn into a workaholic, and not allow enough downtime in your life. You may put too much emphasis on being practical and not give your emotional nature enough of a voice in your life, or find it hard to relate to people who are more right-brained in their approach. Sometimes, when people hear that a mole can contribute to problems, they worry that they should have the mole removed in order to avoid any issues. But every personal characteristic you have provides both strengths and challenges in life. I’ve found that just gaining an awareness of your natural tendencies is often all that’s needed to help you navigate life in a way that’s more balanced and healthy. We’re also influenced by our culture, which has certain standards of beauty

that come and go, and right now moles are often judged as unattractive, so people have them removed. It’s not a disaster to have a mole removed, but it’s best to avoid ending up with a scar where the mole used to be. In that case, you’ve gone from having enhanced power to a depletion of that kind of energy in your life. What face reading teaches is that you were born with all your specific features for a reason. Your face is a blueprint that shows your true inner design; every detail has important information for you about who you came here to be and what your life purpose is. So rather than removing a mole, understanding its messages can empower you for the rest of your life.

YES WE CAN - THRIVING NEW EARTH

The right hemisphere is more about the right now-right here experience where everything is an enormous collage of all the sensory systems flooding into our brains. My saying to “step to the right” is my saying to step into the consciousness of our right hemisphere when we know we’re stuck in the left hemisphere.

We hear a lot about whole brain thinking – is this what you’re talking about? Dr. Taylor: Exactly. I’m an advocate for whole brain thinking. I’m not an advocate for the right brain or the left brain. I am an advocate for the whole brain. This is where you find your freedom. If I can choose who I am in the moment, then I can choose to

Brainpower: Dr. Jill Bolte TaylorContinued from Front Page

Once you’ve recognized your negative thoughts, you have the ability to choose an alternative vibration. What’s it going to be? Optimism, trust, assuming the best, faith in self, faith in the universe, cheerfulness, love, compassion, willingness, acceptance, or a combination of these? • Being Cognizant of Your Words You must be vigilant about the words you use both in your mind and in

the world because these have a tendency to become your reality. As you go about your project, what are you saying to yourself, to your colleagues, to your partner, to your friends, to your family and to others you’d like to influence? • Opening Yourself to Assistance Too often we think of ourselves as lone wolves, everything falling on our shoulders, but if we only open ourselves to assistance, or call it forth, it can be ours. This can be in

the form of tangible aid from others – people pitching in – or the universe putting exactly what we need in our path to help us. • Being True to Yourself We must be honest with ourselves and others, and be true to our desires and our values in order to fulfill our goals and our destinies. We can’t live a life of compromise for others, because that diminishes our true passion. It is the energy of passion that manifests and moves us in the direction we seek.

• Allowing What Happens to Be Okay and Being Flexible Where many aspiring conscious creators fall down is in their rigidity of holding to a chosen outcome or expectation. While setting intentions and visions is important, being flexible with what manifests is even more important. Learn to adjust, accept, and flow. Without resistance you can maintain a positive, gracious, and happy outlook. • Accepting the Wisdom of the Experience Find the gift in the experience, no matter how it turns out. What lesson, benefit, positive spin can you derive from the experience?

These are just some of the key elements, but there are so many ways to apply them. You can apply practical conscious creation to money, to relationships, to love and romance, to work,

The Key to Becoming a Better, Faster Manifestorto family life, to health and healing, to all of the things that hold you back, to living life more deliciously, to anything. And here’s the fun part. You can feel the difference in the flow of everything. If you are like me, you’ll soon start seeing things manifest far more quickly for you in all phases of your life; small daily things, large achievements, wishes, hopes, dreams. There is something so delightful in thinking you’d like to see someone you’ve been missing, and the next minute they are calling you to say they are coming for a visit. Or pondering where your next client might come from to fill the gap in your cash flow, and you meet someone at a party who has the perfect project for you. Or, as in my case, I asked the universe for a free vacation, and a month later a girlfriend invites me to stay at her new house in the Bahamas for a week. Practical conscious

Can we do them both at the same time? Dr. Taylor: Can we think more than one thought at the same time? Most of us know we can’t do that. Both hemispheres are always working all of the time. But one of them is always dominant.

You are always looking for more people to donate their brains for research. Are brain donations up since the book came out? Dr. Taylor: Yes, they are, but we still need more normal brains for control studies and some from people with schizophre-nia and bi-polar disorders. We need to be able to look at the cells of the brain and the only way we can do it is through post-mortem research. People can call 1-800-BRAINBANK for information. I’ll be in Seattle in November. If you’re remotely curious about what’s going on inside your head, you will learn more about the wonder of what we are and how to capi-talize on our power as human beings and what are we doing here.

On Nov. 2, 7 p.m., Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor will discuss the human brain and stroke recovery at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall. Tickets are $30, $45 and $60; 10% dis-count for seniors, students, and groups of six or more. www.benaroyahall.org or (206) 215-4747. While there are many forms of arthritis, the most common are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. The common features of the arthritic illnesses include joint pain, stiffness, and inflammation. Nearly one in three adults are affected by osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease, which is the most prevalent. The primary risk factor is aging. The second most prevalent form is rheumatoid arthritis which affects three to four percent of the population, including children. Gout affects the small joints of the hands and feet and is more prevalent among men. Less common forms of arthritis include psoriatic arthritis, infectious arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.

What causes arthritis? There are many factors contributing to arthritis and that combination is individual. • Leaky gut syndrome or intestinal permeability • Food allergies • Dysbiosis • Accumulation of toxins in the body • Parasites, bacterial and yeast infections • Nutrient deficiencies • Immune dysfunction leading to an

autoimmune reaction, which means the body becomes allergic to its own tissues. • Biomechani-cal stress Osteoarthritis causes a breakdown of cartilage. Cartilage protects the ends of bones from rubbing against each other. Early symptoms begin with mild pain, stiffness, and crepitus, a grinding sound, which can in turn lead to the development of bone spurs, causing more pain and joint breakdown. While it is commonly thought that wear and tear is the cause of osteoarthritis, research points to biochemical processes contributing to changes in the biomechanics of joints and muscles. Free radicals are a major cause of damage to healthy connective tissue in all kinds of arthritis. Free radicals are generated by stress including biochemical, physical, emotional/mental and environmental toxins. Excess body weight affects the joints, especially the knees and hips. For each excess pound of body weight, three pounds of pressure is added to the

knees and six pounds added to the hips. When there is chronic stress, the adrenals produce high levels of cortisol instead of DHEA. Prolonged exposure to steroids can result in bone degeneration, accumulation of fat, and muscle breakdown. Nutrient deficiencies may be involved as a direct or indirect result of cartilage deficiencies. For example, when joints lose their full range of motion, OA is more likely to develop. Compromised mobility decreases the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the cartilage, which then leads to breakdown. Diet significantly affects pain and inflammation. Decreasing fried foods and increasing omega-3 fatty acids decreases inflammation. Many people who suffer from arthritis have an allergy to the nightshade family, which includes peppers, tomatoes, eggplant and potatoes. Other common food allergies include dairy, gluten, soy and eggs. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease where the immune system attacks the joints and connective tissue. In the early stages, the synovial membrane swells and the joint becomes both inflamed and swollen. Commonly, RA affects both sides of the body. Symptoms include chronic aches, stiffness, muscle weakness, fatigue, and depression. As the disease progresses the joints become thick and deformed. The cause of RA is multi-factorial

including food allergies, toxicity, intestinal permeability, and microorganisms causing inflammation. Many viruses and bacteria have been implicated in RA including Borrelia burgdorferi (the spirochete involved in Lyme disease). In addition to the nightshades, both brewers and baker’s yeast, as well as gluten, corn, and eggs have been known to trigger RA. Gout is caused by a buildup of uric acid, which deposit crystals in the joint spaces between bones. Crystals typically appear in the great toe, however they can also appear in the ankles, wrists, knees, and elbows. Raised bumps can be seen on the affected joints. Gout is characterized by episodes of excruciating pain, redness, and inflammation. Moving the joint is severely uncomfortable. The main cause is high levels of uric acid. This can occur as the result of poor diet, underlying kidney disease, biochemical abnormalities, or genetic factors.

How do I know if I have arthritis?

Osteoarthritis is most commonly diagnosed by symptoms. Rheumatoid arthritis is typically diagnosed by several tests conventionally, RF factor (present in 70% of cases), elevated CRP, increased homocysteine, elevated hyaluronic acid level, high levels of various immune markers.

What can I do to begin to heal my arthritis?

• I recommend that you begin with dietary changes and eat primarily a vegetarian, whole foods (unprocessed) diet high in vegetables and fruits, raw seeds and nuts, fish (trout, salmon, cod, halibut, sardines) and grains (quinoa, buckwheat,

Voodoo, magic spells, talismans, essential oils? Can they offer assistance for growing or maintaining business growth? Perhaps.Whether you realize it or not, in addition to your time, you share energy with coworkers and the workplace. What follows are techniques to ensure that the strength and power of the soul permeate our daily routines. The magic of quartz and crystals can be found in even the smallest of pieces. Quartz acts as an amplifier of energy and is good for healing and communication. From as far back as the days of the legendary city of Atlantis through ancient Mayan civilizations, including Far Eastern and Native American cultures, crystals and gemstones have been used in spiritual and healing methods. Today, the practice of using crystals and gemstones continues. How they work is not known, but their power to restore and amplify energy is widely accepted. Skeptics of the power of crystal quartz should consider magnets. While magnets enable us to produce electrical power, amongst other things, we still don’t fully understand the source of their power, or exactly why they exhibit such power. Using crystals in the workplace is an ideal method to affect the atmosphere surrounding us and the people who enter our space. By placing a crystal on top of your computer, its energies will cleanse, heal, and amplify positive vibrations. If you have a plant in your office, place a crystal in the pot to keep it healthy. Keep a crystal on your phone to encourage new sales. Try it. Most importantly, tell your crystal what you would like it to do; this is referred to as “programming.” Crystals work by introducing specific energies into a person’s energy field, which may be helpful for growth, healing and

other purposes. Just as we are all unique individuals with our own personal methods of relating to energies, our experiences of how and when crystals work can vary. Quartz is invaluable in business because it stimulates the mind. It is ideally suited to wear as jewelry close to your head, such as a short necklace or earrings.

It is best to activate your new crystal by keeping it with you, in your pocket, for at least a week to allow it to absorb your “essence.” This synchronizes the crystal to the energy of your body and helps relieve daily stress. Natural quartz has characteristic cracks, especially in larger specimens. Perfectly clear spheres of crystals with no imperfects are likely to be ordinary glass. Every stone has a specific energy, which may be helpful in growth and healing. The term “crystal” was originally used to refer to quartz crystal; however, many people today use the term broadly to describe all stones used in healing and metaphysical work. Crystals respond to the power of our thoughts and intentions. They also respond positively to the nourishment of other aspects of nature such as the sun, moonlight, water and earth. It is best not to let anyone touch your crystals. To clear any stored energy, before use, each crystal should be cleansed, either by soaking or burying it in the ground.

our very DNA, and one of the most esoteric and yet practical systems for expanding our consciousness and unfolding our spiritual gifts and awareness. The miracle of the Tree of Life is that it transforms us from a false and imbalanced state to our real and eternal spirit. Many are familiar with Jewish kabbalah, but kabbalah is really universal. It is the uniting system that underlies every major religion, philosophy, and mysticism, and by understanding the Tree of Life, it is possible to understand any other system through its correspondence. The Tree of Life maps out the relationships between all the energies of life, utilizing astrology, numerology, psychology, as well as ancient myth and symbols, and the four elements. This is great for seekers who study

all walks of life, because everything fits on the tree. The tree is made up of static spheres called sephiroth, and connecting lines or paths between the spheres. Each sphere on the tree represents the archetypes of different planets, gods/masters, archangels, stones, animals, herbs, and so on. For example, the sphere known as the Foundation represents the archetype of the moon, of Atlas or Ganesh who hold up the world, lavender, amethyst, the number nine etc., and by using these correspondences, you can interact with the energies of the Tree through the practices of any number of traditions. You can use the herbs and stones like a shaman, pray to Ganesh, invoke the archangel, or work with the changing tides of the moon. Besides the spheres and paths, the Tree of

Life is composed of three vertical pillars: the masculine pillar of force, the feminine pillar of form, and the balanced middle pillar. By using the pillars and spheres in unison, we can activate new sources of empowerment to enrich our lives. Take the example of money: • At the bottom of the tree, known as the kingdom, we start with the physical body, energy, talents, and drive to make money. • Then we climb to the foundation to build ourselves a solid base of financial stability to start looking for new ways of financial fulfillment. • The next two spheres balance each other on the outside pillars, representing the mind (on the left), and the emotions (on the right). Here we start working through mental

Spiritual seekers look to many different sources for inspiration. Perhaps you were raised going to church regularly, and you loved the spirit of worship. Then maybe you found Buddhism in college, and felt so uplifted and empowered by the realization that we are all one. Then a couple years later, became mesmerized by earth-based shamanic practices using herbs and essential oils for healing. Perhaps you’ve dabbled a bit in Wicca, Hinduism or New Age spirituality, and after tasting the beauty of all these great traditions, found it hard to leave anything

behind. There is often a hunger to incorporate the wisdom that these traditions share, and incorporate the teachings they don’t share, but that still resonate deeply within your soul. For anyone who can relate to this illustration, finding the Universal Kabbalah can feel like coming home. Passed down through the ancient mystical traditions, yet independent from any specific religion, the Universal Kabbalah helps you answer all the important questions that you need to ask in life, and it acts as the most powerful tool on the planet for manifestation, self-discovery, and empowerment. It serves as a simple system of understanding yourself and of reconnecting to the divine spirit and the divine essence within. Kabbalah uses a glyph known as the Tree of Life to engage understanding, and wisdom within, revealing treasures and wonders to enhance your life. The inner lights of hope, passion,

and emotional patterns that may serve us, or maybe don’t, and we can start replacing old habits with better ones.

• Then we reach the golden sphere in the middle, known as beauty. Here we find what our true life purpose is, and realize that living this purpose can bring us abundance and fulfillment into all parts of our life. • But wait; we are only half way up the tree now. Many people stop climbing at this point in the journey, and wonder why things aren’t what they hoped, because there is more. • The next two spheres (red and blue) balance our sense of holding our boundaries and standing up for ourselves, with our ability to give to and serve others. Now we start actualizing our life purpose in a responsible and empowering way; for

ourselves and others. And as we climb the tree more, we can refine this further. This is the pattern of creation used to create and grow, fully and abundantly. So, as an exercise, let’s work with the first sphere, the kingdom. This will help

you pinpoint your innate talents, so you can begin your own process up the tree. Burn some sandalwood and grab a piece of smoky quartz, then sit in meditation. When you are relaxed and ready, tone out loud the name “Malkuth.” Feel this energy wash over you. Think about what you’re good at, and how you can use these gifts. Feel how happy you are when you use these gifts. Be thankful for them, and excited that they bring you so much abundance. When you finish this meditation, write down your ideas and plans for using your gifts, and follow through on these plans. The Universal Kabbalah is a great system for empowerment and enriching all parts of

your life, and can help anyone, no matter what path they are on. The best part about this system is that it’s practical and easy for anyone to use and learn. Many blessings on your journey up the tree.

many people don’t have any knowledge or understanding of its philosophical underpinnings. This book would be a great place for someone to begin to read about some of these concepts and the book will be a trusted friend to those already familiar with the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, the Yoga Sutras, the Bhakti Sutras and the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and Sri Ramakrishna.

The Myth of the Great EndingWhy We’ve Been Longing for the End of Days Since the Beginning of TimeBy Joseph M. FelserHampton Roads

Have you noticed how there always seems to be some sort of prediction about the “end times,” or a global shift or some other sort of doomsday? Books are written, talks and seminars are given, movies are made. When the predicted event doesn’t happen, new predictions are made and so it goes. Is it possible there is something else going on? Professor Joseph Felser asks this: What if we haven’t recognized the true message of these myths? What if our preoccupation with world’s end masks something more primitive and profound; a desire for reconciliation between our inner and outer worlds? In this book he probes these myths and cites the ideas of people like Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung, Jane Roberts and Seth, and Robert Monroe. This is a fascinating book and could give you a new slant on

understanding such events as the Mayan Prophecy of 2012 and the Christian Apocalypse.

Knowing WomanNurturing the Feminine SoulBy Jo Mills GarceauIUniverse

Jo Mills Garceau was the first woman cabinet director in the State of Washington where she worked under Governor Dan Evans, who wrote the forward for this book. She has served as campus minister for the Evergreen State College, was an assistant minister at Ananda Spiritual Community in California, and is a practicing shamanic astrologer. This book is her spiritual memoir and relates her life experiences from childhood to present day. We move with her from childhood in the 1930s where women were subservient to men, through marriage and motherhood, to working in the political arena, to living in spiritual community, traveling to Israel and India, to following her own heart and soul vision in celebration of the divine feminine. Filled with an openhearted generosity of spirit, we are allowed to peek behind the curtains of a woman’s everyday persona

to feel and know her deepest questions, experiences, and spiritual explorations. To further the reader’s own process, the author gives a Workbook for the Soul that teaches six meditation forms and questions for self-reflection. It is rare to find a memoir that satisfies the reader when one doesn’t know the author. This one succeeds in doing just that.

The Time TunnelA Story for All AgesBy Donald Walters (Kriyananda)Crystal Clarity Publishers

Sometimes it’s fun to learn complex ideas and principles through stories. That’s exactly what world-renowned spiritual teacher Donald Walters, now known as Kriyananda, does in this book. Using the technique of story-telling, Kriyananda shares timeless ideas and techniques he learned from his guru, Paramhansa Yogananda. One can wonder how much of the story is a mixture of fiction with the non-fiction. While exploring in Rumania, two boys named Donny and Bobby, discover a ruined laboratory with a mysterious tunnel. Entering into it, their bodies shrink and they emerge into a beautiful countryside and meet Hansel, whose father invented the “time tunnel.” They learn how to encase themselves in time-light spheres and they visit the Middle Ages, ancient Greece and Egypt while also forwarding into the future.

The Power of PrayerGuidance, Prayers, and Wisdom for Listening to the DivineBy Caroline MyssSounds True

I love this CD set. If you have any experience with Caroline Myss, you know she is a no-nonsense sort of teacher. She is a leading voice in the field of energy medicine and in human consciousness. Imagine my delight to hear her talking about true prayer, calling on grace, and union with God. Depending on where you are in your journey, you might be insulted when she talks about humility and acknowledging that it isn’t your right to have a trouble-free life. You might not like hearing her talk about letting go of prayers that are nothing more than a list of “stuff” you expect God to produce for you. She has moved into definitely mystical territory, even citing St. Teresa of Avila as one of her favorite spiritual teachers. If you think you’re ready to take the leap into some new and rewarding spiritual territory that might challenge some of your dearly

held beliefs, get this program. Begin to live it and watch your life unfold in ways you didn’t think possible.

Business MojoAchieving Success Through Mystical ExplorationBy Judy Smith and Dan SmithDog Ear Publishing

This is an impressive book. The authors have managed to take just about every metaphysical principle and technique, apply it to the world of business, and get it in 198 pages. They cover everything from using astrology and feng shui, to numerology, color, essential oils, meditation, and affirmations. Whether you own your own business or you work for someone else, you will find something here to apply to your working life. Even if you already know a lot about many of these topics, it is nice to have them assembled here in one place in an easy to reference format. In order to do this, these folks had to do a lot of study and then figure out how to present it all in a useable format without publishing a book the size of the New York phone book. Well done.

The story is a good one and filled with knowledge about history and human behavior. This would be a great way to introduce children of all ages to some great spiritual truths while also entertaining them. It’s a fun read while offering deep insights.

The CodeUnlocking the Ancient Power of Your BirthdayBy Johanna Paungger and Thomas PoppeBeyond Words

For a long time, students of astrology have known that the date of birth holds a lot of information about a person. This book reveals a divination system based on secret Celtic knowledge that is only now being revealed to people in the United States. Reading the story about co-author Johanna’s childhood and her family of Tyrolean farmers is fascinating, as is hearing how she learned all of this from her grandfather. By using the date of one’s birth, one can learn how this influences your abilities, personality and relationships. By integrating the power of your birth date with colors you can discover how to find balance as well as your hidden talents, strengths and weaknesses. Understanding all of the information and being able to apply it to your life will take some effort because it is a little more complicated than it seems at first. I am looking forward to digging deeper into this and suspect it will be a hit.

The date was Sept. 16 and the Westin Hotel was surcharged with uplifting words of Radhanath Swami and the melodious chanting of Gina Sala, a popular Seattle kirtan artist. The American swami, born in Chicago, traveled overland from Europe to India when he was 19 years old. It became an incredible journey of discovery. He described his extraordinary odyssey in search of meaning and fulfillment in life. It was a miracle how he entered India without a passport and no money. After 40 years of his spiritual quest, he has become one of India’s most recognized holy preceptors of Vedic spirituality. He charmed the audience with the description of his fascinating encounters with India’s holy saints who inspired him to relish the sweet pastimes of Lord Krishna, the deliverer of India’s most renowned holy book, the Bhagavad-Gita. Radhanath Swami was initiated by Srila

A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of the Hare Krishna movement. He learned from his guru how to recognize the presence of the God in the heart of every living being. This universal vision of the God’s presence everywhere and in everyone eclipsed any sense of prejudice or fear in his heart. This understanding and faith empowered him to undertake daring acts of goodness that benefited hundreds and thousands of people in India and now the world. He came with nothing but he learned to use everything in the service of God and share his good fortune with all. Practically, Radhanath Swami has guided his large following in India with spiritual insight and amazing energy to perform organized charitable and educational projects. He has been the inspiration and the driving force behind social welfare endeavors such as Midday Meal, a food relief program which feeds 250,000 indigent school children per day. Bhaktivedanta Hospital is a groundbreaking initiative to provide quality healthcare to the underprivileged. It operates clinics for pregnant mothers, campaigns to combat HIV/AIDS, and its emergency relief teams provide support during disasters. Barsana Eye Camp performs 1,000 free cataract operations per year to keep destitute villagers from going

blind in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. To promote rural development, Govardhan Ecovillage is an environmentally sustainable community meant to serve as a working model of localized economy. Radhanath Swami’s message has inspired his followers to practice the Yoga of the Heart which is opening one’s heart and mind to acts of compassion and sharing love without discrimination. Such a deep commitment to respect the presence of God in the heart of everyone has become his valuable message. People who know Radhanath

American Swami Initiates Thousands Swami speak of his lightness, compassion, simplicity, and sense of humor. Visitors and friends are inspired by his unassuming nature

and his genuine appreciation of the service of his multitude of volunteers for his projects. Radhanath Swami came to Seattle as part of his world tour promoting his book, The Journey Home, in which he narrated how he found the hidden treasures of the Yoga of the Heart. His book is an impelling read that will enthrall the reader. Such an inspirational narrative evokes the yearning in heart to make the world a better place by social activism without any selfish motive. To achieve such purity of heart and actions one needs to transcend petty material motives and replace them with genuine acts of compassion. Thank you, Radhanath Swami and Gina Sala for sharing

your heart-warming messages. For more information visit www.Radhanathswami.com.

By the time you read this it will be October! Yikes, where has the summer gone? Since summer finally did arrive here in my neck of the woods in August, I am hoping for it to last well into fall. Anyway, it feels appropriate to update you on my dealing with outdoor creature adventures this summer and to share some other related odds and ends. As I am writing this it is Labor Day and my mole saga continues. I have continued religiously all that I have written about in my last two columns except that I have not done the home remedy repellent. I believe I am down to just one young mole left around here. It remains at the perimeter of my grassy areas, which is better than in them, but I want it gone. It obviously hasn’t taken

the poison bait but it definitely does not like the commercial repellents that I have written about. I seem to be chasing it around the perimeter of my property. I remain diligent and undaunted, however. I just spoke to a friend in the area and she told me she got rid of her moles by putting dog poop down the tracks and that they have been gone for a very long time. I would be all over that except I do not have

a dog friend in my life at this time. Good reason to start looking, I suppose. I just can’t see myself asking my neighbor if I can come scoop and take his dog’s poop but you never know, I just might. Turns out that giving one rosebud to the aphids that came to my rose bushes this year was a very good call. My roses have bloomed and continue to bloom like crazy now and they still have remained aphid-free since that time. Maybe they won’t come at all next year. I’ll have to let you know on that one. Now, as for the slugs. I still have an unopened jug of Sluggo and some old Deadline on the shelf in my garage as I have not had to use anything to kill the slugs all season this year. I told you that I talked to them and asked them to stay away from my flowers. I also let them know that I purchased the Sluggo and that I would use it if they did not respect my wishes. They have. I see them occasionally in the grass. When I do see them, I say hi, thank them for staying away from my flowers and tell them they can eat as much grass and whatever else is in there as they want. Seems like a deal they can live with as they haven’t even bothered my pansies in ground level planters that they used to destroy. I love it when these deals work out. After my September column hit the streets, I got a call from a reader. She thanked me for the home remedy mole repellent recipe I shared, and wondered if I had a natural way to get rid of yellow jackets. She said she had a nest in or very close to her organic vegetable garden so did not want to use chemicals to kill them. Since this can be a common problem, I’ll share what I know. When I discovered a wasp nest right outside of my front door in Seattle, just as I was getting ready to put the house up for sale, I could not let them stay there. I called my wasp expert, Dick Cheney, (425) 485-0103. If you are within his travel range, he will come and collect them. He kills them humanely and they are used to make anti-venom serum for humans. I liked this idea much better than just plain killing them. After talking it over with my wasps, they agreed to cooperate and the story was so miraculous to me that I wrote an entire column, maybe two about it a couple of years ago. If it is you or the wasps, you can certainly kill them. I believe that is okay, but they are beneficial, so if you can work out a deal

Our Animal Friends

by Martha Norwalk

for them to stay, I prefer that. If not, I prefer a quick kill rather than a longer, lingering kill that in my opinion is cruel. I am talking about the wasp/yellow jacket traps that attract them into it and then they cannot get out. It is a slow death. Just for fun, I did a Google search “natural wasp killer.” Wow, there are tons of listings. I had remembered Dick talking about a natural wasp spray and it was there as well as natural wasp repellents and killers of many types. Even do-it-yourself recipes for repellents and killers were abundant. Now, if you encounter a honeybee hive in a place that is not acceptable, please, please, please do not kill them. They are having a difficult time surviving these days and we need as many of them as possible to be safe. Google search “bee keepers” in your area and one will come get them. Finally, a friend of mine and her husband were almost killed when a deer ran into their car on the highway recently. She posted about it and many wrote to tell her about their success with deer whistles. Since I live in deer, coyote, and critter country, I went to the local auto parts store and bought some. They were only about $6 for a set of two and very easy to stick onto my bumper. You do not hear them inside the car so they are an inexpensive and easy thing to have, just in case.

Updates, Odds and Ends

But this may be too high for adults who are chronically ill, disabled, or sedentary. And it’s too low for most children. No matter what fitness level you’re starting from, you can gain health dividends simply by increasing your daily steps. Here’s how to get started: First, get your doctor’s okay if you’re unaccustomed to exercise. Second, determine your baseline number of daily steps. Third, pick a personal step goal appropriate to your situation that you think you can sustain. Fourth, gradually increase your activity beyond your baseline. Lastly, enjoy the health benefits that increased exercise can bring.

Tomorrow is another day. Hurrah! See how easily negative and limiting beliefs about money push it straight out of your universe? As Rikka said, “If you truly want to know whether or not you love money, just look at your bank account!” Ouch. So whatever that brings up, times a godzillion, do you wish to destroy and uncreate it all? By clearing out all the false and limiting beliefs you have about money, you won’t keep recreating a life based on them. Then begin to ask yourself “What else is possible?” and “How does it get better than this?” When I started asking

those questions, and stayed open to possibility with no judgments or conclusions limiting my receiving, I was blown away by how quickly money and other resources showed up in my world to support the life that I truly desired. What if you didn’t judge yourself for your financial situation? What if you began to live into the question of “What else is possible?” or how about this one: “What can I be, do, have, create, generate, choose or change today that would bring me more money today and in the future?” If you were willing to keep asking questions, could you create any limitations in your life? Or would your life just be an ever-expanding universe of

possibility?

If Money Were Your LoverContinued from Page 15

By Elizabeth Smoots, MD

A tiny electronic gadget may encourage more of us to move. Called a pedometer, or foot measure in Latin, the device is worn on a belt or waistband and records the movement of the hip with each step. Over the course of a day it counts the number of footsteps you took. Can this simple and inexpensive measurement technique really motivate you to get more exercise? Some studies say it may, though it’s certainly not perfect. But I think anything that gets us out of our chairs and moving is a plus. Here’s why.

Physical inactivity killing us After smoking and obesity, lack of exercise is the third leading cause of premature death in the U.S. The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports estimates that physical inactivity contributes to 300,000 preventable deaths in the nation each year. Inactive people are twice as likely to develop heart disease. And they’re at increased risk for obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, arthritis, anxiety and depression. The same ailments affect children who get insufficient exercise.

How do pedometers help? Pedometers can help motivate people to move. A study conducted by Brenda Rooney, PhD, at the Gundersen Lutheran

Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis., provides some data on the topic. Dr. Rooney and her

colleagues followed 510 people over a period of eight weeks. Participants were instructed on how to wear a pedometer and were encouraged to walk at least 10,000 steps daily. They were asked to complete a survey at the beginning and at the end of the study. The results indicated

that 80% of the people gained an increased awareness of their daily activity. In addition, 66% recognized the need for more exercise, and 36% increased their level of physical activity during the study. Researchers concluded that “wearing a pedometer is a simple, non-invasive way to increase awareness of daily activity and does lead to increased activity.” Dr. Rooney and her colleagues noted that participants who set a step goal had a significantly higher increase in physical activity compared to those without a specific step goal. People with goals also noticed greater improvements in energy, had decreased stress and more weight loss, and found that their clothes fit better. Other research shows that taking more steps each day can lead to reductions in blood pressure and cholesterol and improvements in bone density and body composition.

Measuring your steps So, put on that pedometer and set it to zero. By bedtime the meter will tell you how many steps you took all day. If you took only 5,000 steps in a day, you’re quite sedentary. Most middle-aged adults take 6,000 to 7,000 steps a day, an amount that is considered insufficiently active. For good health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend a goal of 10,000 steps each day.

When I first heard that question posed during a class led by Rikka Zimmerman, Access Consciousness facilitator, I have to admit I laughed out loud. And then I got real uncomfortable as I realized, “Holy moly!” If you put it that way, my relationship with money was at the point that we were sleeping in twin beds. Truth be told, whenever my money situation needed some love and attention my response was, “Not tonight honey, I have a headache!” So how did that happen? Even more important, what could I do to bring the romance back? Good question. Can you relate?

One of the reasons I was drawn to Access Consciousness is that it offered a set of tools that could easily change anything that wasn’t working in my life. And trust me, as a psychotherapist for 20-plus years I was skeptical because I had certainly heard that one before. Few modalities or techniques had actually delivered. Access Consciousness is different because it doesn’t assume to know what is best for you, instead, it empowers you to know what you know, and chose for yourself what is true and works for you. It teaches how to achieve total clarity and awareness about how to change your life by asking questions that are generative, that unravel much of the consensus reality thinking that keeps you stuck and limited. By staying in question, new possibilities emerge and get set in motion that would never occur to you if you kept your focus on

what wasn’t working. Take the issue of not having enough money. What we typically do is make a lot of judgments and conclusions about our financial situation, which only serves to lock those limitations into place. Not only that, those limitations then define how much abundance we will allow ourselves to receive. Take credit card debt for instance; if you feel you are bad, wrong, or irresponsible for spending money you don’t have, racking up debt until you are drowning in it, will you want to be more aware of it? No. More

likely, you’ll avoid opening or paying those bills because you feel

they are evidence that you can’t live within your means or manage your money. And the more you avoid them, the worse you feel. So you end up constantly giving energy to your judgments about

your lack of money instead of how to make it work for you. Does this change anything about your credit card debt? In order to heal your relationship with money, the first thing you might want to try is to identify everywhere you’ve made money

bad, scarce, evil, or wrong. Try to uncover every judgment and subconscious agenda you have for sending money away, because it’s the false and limiting beliefs that make it impossible to turn your financial situation around, not you. So let’s play with the idea of “if money were your lover” and see how you might be pushing money out the door so that it can’t be the kind and nurturing, joy-producing partner it could be if you let it. Pretend your money, let’s call it “Mr. M “or “Ms. M,” is right in the room with you. What are some of the ways you think and feel about money so that it doesn’t want to stick around and procreate with you? Take for instance the thought that money is the root of all evil. If money were your lover do you think it would stay if you loathed its very existence? Right... not for long. Do you feel like money always lets you down? So that your empty wallet is one big fat reminder that money is “just not that into

you.” Do you feel that your money honey needs too much attention, that it’s “too high maintenance” and that you’d rather have less of it than deal with the demands of having it around? How many of you don’t trust yourself around it, fearing if you had it, you’d lose all respect for yourself, go completely wild out of control with it? What if you felt like you didn’t deserve it,

or that money pays way more attention to everyone else but you? Do you get jealous of others for having more money? Are you beginning to feel like you’re 16 again, with all that teenage angst and relationship drama, but this time it’s with your money? Would you let your teenage self be in charge of your bank or retirement account? Mine would make sure I spent every last dime on iTunes, cute clothes and vacations.
