start-ups. Their proprietary electric powertrain is being licensed to other automakers in the hopes of achieving better economies of scale and bringing costs down. Later this year Seattle will get the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt, two more electric cars. In 2013, BMW is scheduled to introduce its Mega-City Vehicle with carbon fiber created in Moses Lake. Will electric cars be mainstream in a few years? That’s hard to say, but it could happen. To get a glimpse of the future, make it to this meeting.

On Sunday, OctOber 17, we’ll be visiting the Tesla Motors showroom in Seattle. The meeting time is from 10 a.m. until noon. As the store doesn’t open to the public until noon, this will be an exclusive presentation to our Club. The store is located at 435 Westlake Avenue North in Seattle. This is about one block south of Mercer Street and about two blocks south of Lake Union. Coffee and light refreshments will be served. Tesla personnel will tell about the company and their products. The only model currently for sale is the Tesla Roadster. This is a Lotus Elise with proprietary electric powertrain. It is a full electric, not a hybrid. There are three charging options. The Roadster is $109,000 and performance is excellent. A second model, a beautiful sedan, is coming in 2012, with a projected price around $50,000. Later, a subcompact is

planned at around $30,000. All will be electric only. Each model is a step along the path to bringing affordable electric cars to the masses. About 1,200 of the Roadsters have been sold to date in twenty-five coun-tries. There are about fifty in owners’ hands in the Pacific Northwest. Tesla Motors was founded in 2003 by a group of Silicon Valley engineers and businessmen. The leader and visionary of the group is Elon Musk, who made his fortune by founding PayPal and then selling the company to eBay. Tesla Motors is headquartered in Palo Alto and has about 800 employees currently. The company is currently building the factory to produce the sedan, called the Model S. Tesla has tried to do things differently from the usual auto company business model in the U.S. Their approach has been closer to high-tech, Silicon Valley

BSCC Ladies Only Autocross

the bremertOn SpOrtS car club (BSCC) is having women’s only autocross practice day on October 24 at Bremerton Motorsport Park. This is the perfect chance to try out autocross in a low-pressure, high-fun environment. Female instructors will be on hand all day to guide and teach you the ins and outs of autocross for first-timers. This particular event is not a competition, just a fun time in your car. Not only will you get better on the track with each run, you will also increase your skills for daily driving on the street and become a better, safer driver for it.

Autocross is a low to medium speed driving skill contest. Each car is separately timed over a clearly defined forward moving course of slaloms, braking maneuvers, and obstacle avoid-ance. Primary emphasis is placed on driver skill along with car handling and maneuverability rather than raw power or straight-line performance. The low speed and “single car on course” aspects of the sport create a high level of safety for both car and driver. Guys, we need you too! We will need you to work course, help with set-up, timing and grid so we can get lots of practice. In return you’ll get free runs

October 24

at lunch and the end of the day. Talk to your girlfriend, wife, sister, daughter, mother, grandma, and encourage them to try it out. You may even want to loan them your car so they can see what driv-ing a BMW is all about.

MOTOR SPORTSOur 2010 mOtOrSpOrtS year has come to a close. Our last event was September 16. Both the Car Control Clinic and High Performance Driving School were close to being full, but with the economy as it is we are in the red for each event; still we had fun and a safe year on the track. So now it is time for the folks that put these track events together to work on some winter projects so that our 2011 events are better than ever. The Car Control Clinics at Pacific Raceway have been a big hit. We will continue to hold these concurrently with the High Performance Driving School at PR. Participants are thrilled by the chance to drive the big track at slow speed and a chance to ride in the afternoon with the instructors at a much faster pace. This provided a preview of the next step up the ladder of high per-formance driving. Several Club mem-bers took advantage and are moving up. We are working on fine tuning the Car Control Clinic curriculum to make it even more satisfying for participants. People are very happy this year but there is room for improvements. The online registration with MotorsportsReg.com again has been very successful for our students and we will continue to use this form to register next year. Prices for all driving events may be lower next year. That is good news! We

aS a high perfOrmance enthuSiaSt, have you ever wondered what kind of an adrenaline buzz commanding a 280-horsepower Subaru sliding on gravel induces? Now you can find out. DirtFish Rally School is a new training program; located on a one- of-a-kind site in Snoqualmie, staffed by a phenomenal team of instructors, and outfitted with the hottest rally cars in the nation.

Amazing VenueLocated just thirty minutes from down-town Seattle, the Old Mill Rally Park is a world-class adventure playground right in our own backyard. With over 300 acres of dirt, gravel, mud, tarmac and brush, one can blast over a range of terrain that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Amazing CarsThe cars used are the same Vermont SportsCar rally-prepared cars guys like Travis Pastrana and Dave Mirra use to compete on pro rally stages. These are not your father’s Subarus. They are 280-horsepower fully prepped Group N rally weapons. These turbo powered four-wheel drive monsters deliver a level of power and flickability (yes, flickability) rarely experienced by most high perfor-mance enthusiasts.

Amazing TrainingDirtFish has developed a one-day cur-riculum that provides the opportunity to throw dirt on their skid pad, slide through the slalom and put it all togeth-er through a challenging, adrenaline-generating stage. You’ll be fully wrung out, as you drive off with a new skill set and better understanding of what it’s like to be a high performance rally driver. By the end of the day you will be a left foot braking, hand brake turning, gravel throwing rally machine.

Open HouseDirtFish is hosting an open house for the BMW Club on Sunday, October 3, from 1 until 3 p.m. Come and see the cars, see the facility and see what this is all about. If you have already decided you want to try this, keep reading.

Exclusive BMW Club OfferOn October 9, Saturday, DirtFish will be providing a special BMW Club exclu-sive day to eight members. A special introductory price of $850 ($300 off the regular full-day price) is being offered. For a limited time, as a BMW Club member you’re eligible for this special introductory offer. BMW CCA mem-bers will be able to pay in three equal payments of $283.33. The first payment is due upon enrollment, the second

payment is due two weeks in advance of your program and final payment is due on the day of your program. Please note: there are just eight spots available. To enroll call 866-285-1332.

DetailsOpen House Date: October 3, SundayTime: 1 until 3 p.m.RSVP: Not necessary; just show up.Where: 7001 396th Drive SE, Snoqualmie WA 98065Note: Some GPS devices will misdirect the final mile—follow the directions below.

Driving DirectionsTake I-90 east from Seattle. Take the WA-18 exit, exit number 25, towards Snoqualmie Pkwy. At the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto WA-18. WA-18 becomes SE Snoqualmie Pkwy. Follow for 3.6 miles. At T-intersection, turn left onto Railroad Ave SE/WA-202 and go over the bridge. Turn right immediately after bridge onto Millpond Road. Stay right on Mill Pond Road. M Car Day: 170a great turnOut of 170 M Cars for our Fourth Annual M Car Day. Held at the new Griot’s Garage facil-ity in Tacoma, the event stayed dry all day like we expect in late August. M Car Day has been a great way to close out the summer car show season. After lunch was served for approximately 300 in attendance we were almost able to get everyone inside the Car Care Center for a bevy of raffle prizes! Special thanks to Griot’s Garage and Haury’s Lake City Collision for

co-hosting the event and making it a very special day for M Car owners. The BMW Club provided raffle prizes along with Griot’s Garage and Haury’s. Haury’s also made their E90 M3 Ulti-mate Loaner Car available for drives all afternoon for those in attendance. Highest mileage was a 1988 M5 with over 274,000 miles and lowest mileage was just off the boat with 400 miles! Furthest traveled went to an E46 M3 from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho! Hearty travelers also came from Salem, Oregon and Vancouver, BC.

The E36 M3 took highest total in the parking lot with 39 Ms in attendance. All M Cars were represented this year except for an M1. It’s fun to see the new Ms come on line from one year to the next. For example, last year we had eleven E90 M3s, this year we had seven-teen lined up and someone commented that there must have a million dollars in E90 M3s lined up. They sure looked like a million bucks! M Car Day 2012… can we hit 200 M Cars?

Change of Seasons: Rules Change of Seasons!

it iS ruleS change SeaSOn again here at PRO3 Headquarters and the room is abuzz with…not much, it would seem. Yep, it’s true; this year has been relatively quiet on the controversial component front. Sure, we had a lively discussion recently about control arm bushings, brackets and bric-a-brac, but nothing that would rival the good ol’ days of fisticuffs over differential ratios! I would go so far as to say that the PRO3 rules within the ICSCC competition regulations are stabilized and not requiring any further significant modification. But wait! What’s that light? Is it the end of the tunnel? No! Good Lord! It’s the train!

Just when I thought I was in the clear as the BMW CCA Contest Board Representative to ICSCC (and Rules Change Coordinator), along comes roughly a half-dozen rule changes to upset the E30 apple cart! Okay, maybe it’s not that bad. In fact, the proposed changes were not really changes in most sense, but were to be considered more “defining” in nature. Our rules are under constant scrutiny. Anyone who builds, buys, or rents a PRO3 car is going to be familiar with the rules (well, they better be!) as written and at some point, that person will be left to interpret a rule for a particular situa-tion involving his or her car. A person’s interpretation of the rules will differ based on that person’s past experiences involving race cars (or any competitive rules-based sport for that matter.)

And therein lies the trouble. If we were left to our own devices, and too many of our rules were left open to individual interpretation, then we could risk the cohesive and competitive spirit of the class. Sound Armageddon-like? Well, it may actually not be too far from the truth. Take, for example, the lowly skid plate. You and I might picture some-thing rather benign in our minds. A skid plate that covers the oil pan back to the steering rack; you know, like most “skid plates.” On the other hand, it’s possible that someone with greater experience in racing may see “skid plate” and immedi-ately think of a large plate of aluminum that would stretch from the radiator clear back to the rear subframe! What’s the big deal? Well, that becomes an aerodynamic aid and would potentially

The PRO3 Line

give an unfair advantage to that person. So, to help prevent such unnecessary liberties being taken of our rules, we are going to be voting on a few items that will help clarify, rein-in, and otherwise focus the real intent back to what this class really should be about: driver de-velopment, not car development. This is not to say that the intent of the class is being preserved to the letter of the rules, as there have been plenty of instances where the rules are being stretched (legally) and cars are being developed to their full potential, expense be damned. It’s racing; this is going to happen even if we spec’d the entire car to specific equipment. It’s in our very nature as competitors to attempt to one-up our neighbor in the paddock and if we can’t do that with our driving skills, then maybe we can get a little help from the car. And that’s okay to an extent. I would like to see greater emphasis on the driver development vs. car development aspect though. That is why our class continues to grow and attract competitors from other classes to join our ranks.

Proving once again that the BMW M3 knows the way to victory lane at Road America, the BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team won the ultra-competitive American Le Mans Series GT class for the second consecutive year at the clas-sic Road America circuit. No. 90 BMW M3 GT drivers Joey Hand and Dirk Müller completed 66 laps of the 4.0-mile circuit in today’s two-hour-and-forty-five-minute Ameri-can Le Mans Series race, winning by 2.6 seconds. The outstanding result gives BMW a six point lead in the all-im-portant Manufacturer point standings. Hand and Müller move up to a tie for second in Driver points before the last two races of the season.

BIMMER CUPCAKES FOR STEVEThese cupcakes were made for my 53rd birthday by Lacey Bingham-Ramos, a post-doctoral scientist in the laboratory. Lacey said that she spent over five hours doing the decoration for the cupcakes. I was floored when they presented the cupcakes to me! I probably should give everyone in the lab a joy ride in the 318is!

The Man Behind the Curtain II (Continued)

Last month I Left you wIth part one of my article in which I had some drive line issues and replaced some u-joints that were designed not to be replaced. If you remember my mechanic (The Man Behind the Curtain, Phil Radke of Rads Auto Repair) took me on a tour underneath my car while it was on the rack. I highly recommend this. Now for the upgrades and go-fast goodies. What I found on my personal tour of the belly of the beast was worn out tie-rods, upper and lower bushings and worst of all missing rubber in the rear trailing arm links and rear sway bar links. Anyone who knows anything about BMWs, especially the E28 knows that bushing maintenance is the road to happiness. My 535is was due, actually overdue, for bushings. The front upper and lower bushings as well as the rear trailing arm links were either worn out or under-designed. I did some research and found what I consider to be some of the best bushings on the market. They are called PowerFlex and they are the cat’s meow. PowerFlex leads in the develop-ment and manufacture of a wide range of high performance automotive polyurethane bushings. Their website is extremely easy to navigate and does not leave you wondering if you ordered the correct parts. They also give you a wonderful visual of the parts in question as well as the different components you may want to consider replacing. I knew I had scored when my mechanic said how cool they were and how easy they were to install due to their two part

design. The front end of my car is now very happy and feels like new again. The tie-rods were fairly inexpensive and wear causing odd tire were because they needed replacing. This required a front end alignment after replacement but it was due anyway. Before I took my car in to have these components replaced I could be going down the road and shake the steering wheel quickly back and forth and my car felt like the body was going one direction while the wheels went the other. It was irritat-ing, scary and dangerous. Upon my underbelly tour I found that the bushings in the rear trailing arm links and rear sway bar links were not only worn out but in some cases missing altogether. The dog bone links were there but there were no bushings in them. This is what was causing the feeling of the body disconnected from the wheels. You may ask how this could happen; it happens very slowly over time. If it happened all at once you would know it immediately but over the course of years it just slowly gets worse until it gets to a tipping point of you noticing, hey my car feels like an AMC Pacer, what gives? Anyway after replacing these parts with links sourced through Bavarian Auto, oh my gosh, what a difference!! I would highly recommend that if you have an older BMW you replace these parts; they are easy to get to and they are very inexpensive compared to the front bushings. Next on the list is shocks and I can hardly wait to feel that difference.. God Bless the Man Behind the Curtain..

fIfteen or so Z Coupe owners gathered in Federal Way after M-Car Day on August 22 for their own SIG event. Over snacks and beverages we got to know new members of the group and re-connect with long-time owners. Cars ranged from older Zs to newer Zs. Clyde brought out his rare low-mileage 2001 3.0 and Behan drove his track-ready 2007 Z4 M. Enthusiasm around these cars is intense and it was great to learn about different modifications and common maintenance items and solutions. I am looking forward to hosting another get together next summer. I think we will have our own day next time.
