Please advise the office by 3.00pm on Friday 25 September if you wish to have a meal for catering purposes. Entertainment for the meeting will involve Graham Boulter conducting a round up of all things Lobethal. Come along and hear all about the event which by then will have just happened. Annual General Meeting Results At the Annual General Meeting held on Wednesday 2 September the following members were elected to the Board: Rob Thompson Geoff Chennells Eric Ozgo Congratulations to these people and we look forward to a successful working relationship. Many exciting events are being planned for that day – among them road closures, displays of cars, parades of cars, and much, much more. If there are any members who wish to be involved in the planning of this day, please contact the office. Bay to Birdwood Catering Due to the efforts of Jan Hurd, a SCCSA member who is also on the Bay to Birdwood committee, the Club was successful in tendering for the judges luncheon. A big thank you goes to Margaret and Kingsley Hoff, Di and Jon Pyle and Vicki and John Considine who cooked a great B-B-Q and provided fruit and cheese platters for approximately thirty judges on Sunday 27 September. This was great exposure for the SCC as all our volunteers wore Club apparel and aprons and interacted well with their guests. Distinguished guest judges included Isobel Redman (State Opp. Leader), Martin Hamilton – Smith MP, Mark Goldsworthy MP, Dr Jane Lomax- Smith MP, Police Commissioner Mal Hyde and Andrew Daniels, CEO Motor Accident Commission. I believe all the guests thoroughly enjoyed their meal. The Bay to Birdwood committee has enquired if the Club would be interested in catering for the Early V8 Fords National meeting on the Sunday long weekend in June 2010. This could be a huge fundraiser for the Club as we would be required to cater for a B-B-Q for perhaps 300 to 350 people! To cater for such an event would require some planning and no doubt depend on the number of volunteers willing to help out on the day – can you help? More details later. Library News Highway driving doesn’t come much easier than cruising the Freeways of the USA. This came home to me recently on some ‘timeout’ driving in the USA. I must say I had forgotten how easy it was, particularly now that the cars are a bit smaller but the spaces are as big as they were for the big ones. In the Library we have many travel books on a motoring theme including some on epic journeys. Prepare yourself before you go anywhere by ducking in to the library and having a look at, or borrowing, some of our many motoring travel adventure stories. One up to date book on USA travel covers the famous Mother Road, ‘ROUTE 66’ from Chicago to the Pacific. Even travelling on parts of it is a rewarding experience as you can still quaint restaurants, the neon lit motels and special museums. For plane travel we have quite a few pocket sized novels which are fictional accounts of motorsport as it used to be. One I can recommend is ‘BRAKING POINT’ by Andrew Neilson which was once described by Derek Bell “as the most exciting and technically accurate piece of motor racing fiction that I’ve ever read.” Another is ‘CURVE’ by Bob Judd, described by Sir Jackie Stewart as a “Dick Francis on wheels.” A book that has been a long time coming and which you should put your name down to reserve is, ‘ALMOST UNKNOWN- TONY GAZE’ by Stewart Wilson which describes Tony Gaze’s two careers, firstly as a decorated Spitfire fighter pilot and then as a very successful racing driver, which included Formula One and being the driving force behind establishing Goodwood racing circuit. His talents and adventures were amazing. We are very fortunate to have acquired a series of early ‘Autocar’ magazines. We even have Volume 1 which covers 1895-6. Most interesting but not for borrowing. Michael Gasking – Our Library connecting people

HRR News The Historic Commission met the weekend12-13th of September, Peter Hall attended and an Independent review committee put forward their recommendation regarding the cut of dates for Historic Formula Ford. The date for the VHRR Phillip Island Classic has been set for March 19-21st 2010. It has been identified that there is pressing need for more Historic Eligibility Officers to share the load in South Australia, not only is our sport growing but the loyal and faithful are thinking of retirement. Good discussion at the last HRR meeting regarding preparation and maintenance of cars, racing experiences etc. The people present enjoyed the discussion to such a degree that we closed up shop at 10 p.m. The HRR would like to pass on their best wishes and thoughts and a speedy recovery to Kevin Shearer. Don’t forget the Lobethal Grand Carnival Scheduled for the October long weekend 3-4 which will celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Australian TT and Grand Prix meetings held on the famous 8.65 mile circuit. 1939 AGP winner Allan Tomlinson, the event patron is expected to make the trip from New York where, aged 93, he now resides with his daughter. Featured marques for 2009 are MG and Alfa Romeo. Vintage aircraft will also be a feature at Lobethal in 2009 with negotiations underway. Next HRR meeting November 10th

Veteran News Coming Meetings October 16 – Leon Mitchell will speak on the Vivian Lewis company in SA November 20 – MGK3 & Singer Le Mans on stage – Philip Bradey & Rory Hope will speak on their vehicles. October 31-Nov 1 – Meander to Milang weekend rally, last chance to join with the other dozen entrants. November 21 – RAA Trophy Day December 6 – Club Christmas Picnic Past events – Watch the Waves Roll In - About 15 vehicles brought members to join this history tour around Port Adelaide area. We heard adventures of several members who were brought up around there and learned much of our state’s early history. Thanks to Kevin & Anna Fagan for organising this, it was most enjoyable. Australian FHMVC – Old Car Day, Tuesday September 1 – Gawler VV&C Club sent notice to many clubs about a lunch gathering of historically registered vehicles at Bethany on this day, so a group of 5 SCC vehicles took the scenic route to Bethany. Here there were about 80 vehicles assembled representing about 8 different car clubs, mostly from the northern side of town, so we had lots of “new” classics to view. The Association of Veteran Car Clubs in Australia Annual Conference was held on Aug 15, with all states being represented. Business agreed upon was to reprint the Veteran Member & Vehicle Register in 2010. The National Rally Roster was fixed for the next 7 years, so SA will have to organise rallies in 2014 and 2016. The National 1 & 2 Cylinder Rally for 2012 will be moved to 2013, as ACT is celebrating its centenary that year, (next 1 & 2 in 2014). Vintage News Previous events/meetings September 11 was our War birds meeting. A few lines in a newsletter can not possibly do justice to such a memorable event. A full report will appear in WheelSpin. Thanks to all those who participated. On stage were a Messerschmitt micro car, an Armstrong Siddeley Lancaster and a Ford Mustang, chosen for obvious reasons. September 6 was our run to Lobethal. The Hills were at their most spectacular! Following morning tea at Balhannah, we visited Melbas chocolate factory and the adjoining cheese factory, before travelling to Mt Torrens and then returning to the Lobethal markets for lunch. Thanks to Tony Rieger for organising this most enjoyable day. Coming Meeting October 9 is our metal /plastic polishing night. Kay Pilkington from Josco Products will demonstrate their products. Members please note that the meeting due for 13 November will be a joint meeting with Veteran Section on 20 November. Coming events October 5 (note this is the holiday Monday) is our Collingrove Canter. Meet at Bennett Memorial Reserve Bennett Avenue Manningham at 9 am for a 9.30 start. Fleurieu News Sunday October 25 The Fleurieu group are again inviting all to be part of our annual October day out. It is a BYO day finishing with lunch at Rick Medlyns home on Batson Parade, Hindmarsh Island. Meeting time is at 10.30 a.m. at the Goolwa wharf and we expect to arrive at Hindmarsh Island around midday. RSVP to Ali Roscrow at 85552029 or [email protected]. The Fleurieu Group is still finalising plans for our weekend of fun, commencing Friday 13 November. Plans so far are leave Adelaide on the 13th. Accommodation has been arranged at the Chardonnay Lodge with room prices commencing from $175 per four star double. For those with the luxury of time, we are suggesting a leisurely drive to the Keith Hotel for lunch, then onto the Chardonnay Lodge for a casual barbecue dinner. Saturday 14th, after breakfast, a mystery run is being organised by Margaret and Geoff Roberts. Their mystery run last year certainly created a lot of laughs so there is no doubt that this year's fun run will be just as confusing and a great tester of skill. Dinner has been arranged at the Chardonnay Lodge so all can relax and enjoy without worrying about a designated driver. Sunday 15th we have two options. Firstly, travel back to Adelaide at one's leisure. Secondly, participate in a bus tour visiting and tasting wines in the many wineries in the area. The second option would depend on the number of participants to make it a viable option. With option two it is suggested that Sunday night be spent at the Chardonnay Lodge and travel back to Adelaide on the Monday. Those people who have not yet advised their interest please advise Ali Roscrow at 85552029 or [email protected] or Judy Rainsford at [email protected].
