W h a t t h e y n e e d . . .What would you think of as a home? A comfortable and

cozy place to live? Or a place where you found love, warmthand security? All of them probably are the answer to all of us,and to the ex-mentally ill persons as well: when the ex-men-tally ill persons discharge from half way house (residentialhome) and return to the society, what they need are practicalguides and assistance to rebuild their home, and the supportand acceptance from the community.

W h a t t h e y o f f e r . . .The IKEA volunteer team holds the belief that 'a house

becomes a home' only when there is human touch such asconcern, understanding and support within it. So, understand-ing the need of the ex-mentally ill, they launched "No PlaceLike Home" project with New Life Psychiatric RehabilitationAssociation by making use of their expert knowledge on homedesign and management to help ex-mentally ill persons to re-build a real home.

P r o j e c t H i g h l i g h t :The IKEA volunteer staffs provided "Train the Trainers" work-

shop regularly to staffs of half-way homes and persons that aregoing to be discharged. They also offered professional consul-tation on design, home management, home furnishing and in-kind donation on need basis.

The volunteer team hopes that the Project helps to im-prove the quality of life of the ex-mentally ill persons; at thesame time, conveying their corporate vision of "to create a bettereveryday life for the many people" to the community. In fact, the involvement of the IKEA staff volunteers is already a gooddemonstration of community integration and acceptance.

The group, with little or no art experience, spent two Satur-day afternoons painting the mural. You can find a giganticrainbow, vividly-colored flowers, funny insects and smiling facesin the mural, representing the students' happy and energeticschool life.

Ms Mak Lai-fun, project co-coordinator and school teacher, said that the mural was jointly created by the children and ChanTung-mui, a local physically handicapped artist. It was thentransferred onto the wall with the assistance of the schoolprincipal. "The activity is a great success. The children's cheerfullaughter tells you that they are having lots of fun. Though suf-fering from physical disabilities, the students are willing to tryand participate actively. I am very proud of them."

Winnie Shiu, co-ordinator of Wayfoong Volunteers Scheme, said that since the establishment of the Wayfoong VolunteersTeam in 1993, consistent efforts have been made in servingpeople with mental handicap and physical handicap. "The ac-tivity is something more than a simple art project. Apart fromcreating a better learning environment for the children, it helpsdevelop the children's skills in arts and their creativity.” Inaddition to mobilising volunteers to participate, the HongkongBank Foundation District Community Programme supports theproject with a funding of HK$20,000.

HSBC's staff volunteer group, Wayfoong Volunteers, has morethan 1,500 members who give up their own time to help andbefriend the elderly, mentally handicapped people, single-par-ent families, new arrival families, psychiatric patients and ter-minally ill patients. Each year, some 50 community serviceprojects are organised.

New Elderly Squad

In face of the aging population in HongKong, the SHKP Volunteer Team set up an Eld-erly Squad in Chai Wan in partnership withSAGE on July 17 to help the carers of the eld-erly and seniors.

Project Highlight

Statistics show that over 70% of the carersare seniors with 40% of whom are above theage of 70. To help alleviate their stress anddifficulties in taking care of the old people,Elderly Squad was set up on 17 July 2004 toprovide a range of support services includingregular concern calls and visits, outing andpersonal care support (such as measuringblood pressure, haircut, etc). Now, our Eld-erly Squad have more than 60 trained volun-teers and we expect over 500 carers will bebenefited.

Jardine OneSolution (HK) Limited, a corporate in Kwun Tong,is a member of the Kwun Tong District Co-ordinating Commit-tee on Promotion of Volunteer Service. Their volunteer team,JOS Care, has been working hand in hand with the Kwun TongDistrict Social Welfare Office to serve the deprived familiesand unemployed youths with their computer expertise since2003.

Kwun Tong District Social Welfare Office and JOS Care havejointly set an example to illustrate the complementary role be-tween the business and welfare sector in serving the needy. While JOS Care contributes their computer expertise, our staffprovide strong back-up throughout programme planning andimplementation. Apart from coordinating suitable referrals fromnon-governmental organizations and departmental service units,we also provide advice and logistic support in launching thefollowing two major programmes:

(1) Training to unemployed youth - Between July 2002 andDecember 2003, volunteers of JOS Care provided a totalof 14 training sessions on application of personal com-puter to 100 unemployed youths in Kwun Tong with a viewto raising their employability.

(2) To donate second-hand computers to deprived students -volunteers of JOS Care collected second hand personalcomputers, refurbished them and distributed for use to stu-dents from deprived families in Kwun Tong. They also pro-vided personal guidance and a half-year maintenance sup-port for the students to ensure that they could acquire thecomputer knowledge and application skills.

Apart from making contribution to serve the deprived groupsin Kwun Tong, JOS Care also has substantial gains in develop-ing positive life values, enhancing self-confidence and teamwork among their staff volunteers. We are grateful for theirdedication in volunteer service and hope that more corporateorganizations in Kwun Tong could follow suit the good work ofJOS Care to serve the community with their expertise.

Feedback from Mr. Bennet Lee,Senior Marketing Manager,Jardine One Solution (HK) Limited

"Social Welfare Department helps us a lot in implementing theVolunteer services in Kwun Tong District. Their outbound volun-teers are professional, helpful and successfully introduced the tar-get beneficiaries to us in our PC donation program. Our volun-teer team learns a lot of valuable volunteer service experience, which we could not get in our job."

2001. Over 40,000 pieces of second-hand computer hard-ware were donated by nearly 1,000 commercial firms, whilesome of the Properties Management Companies assisted to col-lect the computers which were then refurbished and donatedto the deprived. Some companies even provided voluntarycomputer training to the deprived groups. Recently, Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft Hong Kong have donated printers andOS license to the users of refurbish computers. This really helpedmore deprived people to access to the world of informationtechnology.

The ECO Professional Sound and Production Ltd. has beenthe partner of Services for the Elderly in organizing numerousmass programmes ever since 1985. The Company has contrib-uted much in the stage design, provision of professional soundequipment and technical support in the territory-wide Proseand Poetry Recitation Competition, Elderly Talent Show andthe first centralized Volunteer Award Ceremony held in March2004. Their valuable contribution helped to make theprogrammes a great success.

The partnership between the business sector and the wel-fare sector has developed stronger and more dynamic ap-proaches in meeting the needs of the community. Caritas willcontinue such collaboration to advocate corporate citizenshipand develop social capital.
