Jets' Enunwa suspended 4 games for personal conduct (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press October 19, 2015

http://www.pro32.ap.org/article/jets-enunwa-suspended-4-games-personal-conduct

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa was suspended four games without pay by the NFL on Monday for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

The suspension stems from an incident last year in which Enunwa was arrested for simple assault on his girlfriend at a New Jersey hotel. Domestic violence charges were later dropped in the case.

In a statement, the Jets said they "support and respect the NFL's decision" to suspend Enunwa.

"The New York Jets share the NFL's ongoing commitment to raising awareness of the frequency and impact of domestic and relationship violence," the statement added, "supporting survivors and encouraging others to speak out and seek help."

Enunwa has become a key part of the offense as a blocking receiver after being a sixth-round pick out of Nebraska last year. He has eight catches for 94 yards this season after earning the role as the Jets' No. 3 receiver behind starters Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker.

Enunwa is eligible to return to the Jets' active roster on Nov. 13, following the team's game against the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 12. He'll miss New York's AFC East showdown with New England on Sunday, as well as games at Oakland and against Jacksonville at home. As per the league's personal conduct policy, Enunwa is not allowed at the team's facility during his suspension.

Coach Todd Bowles said he learned of Enunwa's suspension Monday, but was aware since the preseason that the NFL could make a decision at some point during the season.

Buzz off: Jets taking low-key approach to facing Patriots (Dennis Waszak) Associated Press October 19, 2015

http://www.pro32.ap.org/article/buzz-jets-taking-low-key-approach-facing-patriots

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — This is the week you could count on, at least twice an NFL season, to hear some pretty good trash talk all the way from New York to Boston.

Yep, it's Jets-Patriots.

Bad blood, memorable moments and players and coaches switching sides mark this AFC East rivalry.

So, with the latest showdown set for Sunday at New England with first place in the division on the line, the hype should be starting right about now, right?

"We're not trying to catch up on anybody," guard Willie Colon said Monday. "We're not trying to make any statements. We just want to win, and everything will take care of itself."

Wait.

What about the shots at Tom Brady? Or, that stuff about not kissing Bill Belichick's rings? And, the talk of knocking the Patriots off their throne atop the AFC East?

"You know the answer to that," Colon said. "You know why. New regime."

Rex Ryan certainly drove the narrative during his six years with the Jets, firmly establishing an us-against-them approach. Ryan always spoke of his respect for Brady and Belichick, but also made it clear that he wanted to beat them, and in a big way.

He wasn't very successful at it, though, going 4-9 against them with the Jets — although one of those victories came in the playoffs. That did little to stifle the chatter during the week leading up to the games against the Patriots.

Well, under coach Todd Bowles, the buzz is gone.

"Winning this game is not going to make us," Bowles said. "Losing this game is not going to break us."

Whoa.

But, Ryan used to say division games were worth 1½ games because of their potential effect on the standings.

"No," Bowles said. "It's one game for us."

These are certainly new — and boring? — times in the Jets-Patriots rivalry, with New York taking on the even-keeled and low-key approach of its head coach.

The spiciest of the headline-making comments might have come after the Jets' 34-20 victory over the Washington Redskins on Sunday. That's when Sheldon Richardson declared that the Jets are "licking our chops" at facing the defending Super Bowl champions.

Yawn.

Page 4: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

"You want them amped up on Sunday, but as far as playing the game or playing a specific person, you try to treat everybody the same and we go about our business the same way," Bowles said. "We don't let that (determine) what we do in practice or what we do on Sunday."

That includes not getting too high emotionally about facing an undefeated Patriots team that has won the division 12 of the past 14 seasons.

"Emotions is a tricky word," Colon said. "Because if you fall into it, you kind of lose focus on everything that needs to be done around you. The only way to keep emotions out of that is just focus on your job, and focus on the job at hand."

For the Jets (4-1), that means not having the type of sluggish starts that have been an early season problem, including their sloppy first half against the Redskins. New York had three turnovers in the first two quarters, leading to all of the Redskins' points as they took a 13-10 lead into halftime.

Ryan Fitzpatrick and the offense got their acts together in the third quarter, scoring 24 straight points and cruising to a win. Chris Ivory had another big game with 146 yards rushing and a touchdown, leading a Jets running attack that ranks first in the league.

"We have a lot of stuff to clean up," Fitzpatrick said. "The turnovers early obviously put our defense in a tough spot. Those are just things that aren't going to be able to continue to occur if we want to continue to win games."

The defense is ranked No. 1 overall in yardage allowed with 269.2 yards per game, and it has given up an NFL-low 75 points through five games.

In Brady & Co., the Jets will face the league's No. 2 overall offense, which also ranks second in passing.

"He's one of the ultimate quarterbacks of our time," Bowles said.

As a starting quarterback, Brady is 21-6 against the Jets, including 1-1 in the playoffs. So, he's an opponent the Jets know well — and can serve as an early season litmus test for New York.

Even if they're being hush-hush about it all.

"It's Week 6 and we just happen to be playing the New England Patriots," Colon said. "That's our mindset. We know it's going to be a tough team to go against. But for us, it's another chance for us to prove ourselves. The only thing we need to prove to ourselves is that we can win."

Jets not getting caught up in hype for Patriots game (Kimberley A. Martin) Newsday October 19, 2015

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/jets-not-getting-caught-up-in-hype-for-patriots-game-1.10984603

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Todd Bowles' unemotional approach is present even when he isn't.

On Monday, the Jets' expansive locker room resembled a ghost town. But the four players who did speak -- Ryan Fitzpatrick, Eric Decker, Willie Colon and Breno Giacomini -- echoed their coach's "it's just another game'' refrain. And each one refused to feed into the "Patriots week'' hype.

Page 5: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

5 | P a g e

"I think that's the way you guys look at it, personally,'' Giacomini said. "Every week's a test for us on Sunday. Right now we're 4-1, so we're doing pretty good.''

Bowles stressed the importance of winning division games but noted: "Winning this game is not going to make us. Losing this game is not going to break us.''

Reminded that Jets players often made "a huge deal'' in the past about playing the Patriots, Colon smiled and said: "You know the answer to that. I'm not going to fall into that. You don't have to [ask]. You know why. New regime. New regime. Next question.''

Former Jets coach Rex Ryan rode the wave of emotion throughout his six-year tenure, offering no apologies for his brash personality. Nor did he back down from his bold predictions, even though his words put a bull's-eye on his players. That fiery emotion came at a price, especially when Ryan's teams couldn't deliver on his grandiose statements.

"Good teams don't ride the emotional roller coaster,'' Colon said. "They stay steady, they stay straight ahead and they stay in their lane. They don't look left and right to see what the other teams are going through. We're trying to be that team.

"We don't have to look at what Buffalo is going through, what New England is doing. We've just got to worry about what the New York Jets have to do and be competitive and fight and play hard and play at a high level. And if we're able to do that, we're going to be fine. We're not trying to catch up on anybody, we're not trying to make any statements, we just want to win. And everything will take care of itself.''

For the first time since 2010 -- when they started 5-1 -- the Jets are on an early-season hot streak. According to defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, there's no better time to face the defending Super Bowl champions, who are 5-0.

"I'm kind of happy we get next,'' said Richardson, who returned from a four-game suspension Sunday and helped the Jets defeat the Redskins, 34-20. "[We're] licking our chops.''

Decker wasn't as colorful as Richardson on Monday, but he acknowledged this division game is critical. Said the receiver: "You've got to win those games to get into the playoffs.''

Notes & quotes: RB Stevan Ridley is eligible to play against his former team and could "maybe'' suit up Sunday, Bowles said. Ridley has been on the physically unable to perform list since the start of the season. "I'm hoping to get him in pads [Wednesday] and get him out there and let him run around,'' Bowles said.

Stevan Ridley might return to practice with Jets this week (Kimberley A. Martin) Newsday October 19, 2015

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/stevan-ridley-might-return-to-practice-with-jets-this-week-1.10984339

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - The Jets' running game could soon be getting a boost.

After starting the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, Stevan Ridley is eligible to return this week against his former team, the New England Patriots (5-0).

"Maybe," Jets coach Todd Bowles said Monday when asked if Ridley would play in Week 7. "I haven't seen anything. I can't answer that."

Page 6: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

Daily Clips Cont.

6 | P a g e

It seems unlikely Ridley will play, given that he hasn't practiced all offseason. But his return is fast approaching and that should mean good things for the Jets, who are 4-1 and boast the NFL's top rushing attack (146 yards a game).

Ridley, who tore his ACL and MCL last season with the Patriots, hasn't played in a game in more than a year. So the plan is to get him on the practice field Wednesday.

"I'm hoping to get him in pads and get him out there and let him run around," Bowles said.

And once Ridley steps on the practice field, the clock starts ticking. The Jets will have a 21-day window to add him to the active roster.

Skrine status unclear. Cornerback Buster Skrine is in the concussion protocol and it's unclear if he'll be able to play against the Patriots.

"He said he's feeling fine but saying it and doing other things is a different deal," Bowles said, adding that Skrine will be evaluated Wednesday "and we'll go from there."

The coach did say he's seen "quite a few" players return to action a week after suffering a concussion.

Jets' Quincy Enunwa suspended four games by NFL (Kimberley A. Martin) Newsday October 19, 2015

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/jets-quincy-enunwa-suspended-four-games-by-nfl-1.10983447

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Jets receiver Quincy Enunwa has been suspended without pay for the team's next four games for violating the NFL Personal Conduct Policy, the league announced Monday.

Jets coach Todd Bowles confirmed that the suspension stems from Enunwa's Aug. 31, 2014, arrest. He was charged with "domestic violence simple assault," according to the arrest report from Florham Park police, following an alleged altercation with his girlfriend inside a hotel room.

On the 911 call, which was obtained from the Florham Park police, a hotel staffer was heard telling the operator that the "domestic incident" resulted from "a heated argument" and a "woman was injured."

Enunwa's girlfriend chose not to pursue the charges, according to the prosecution, and Enunwa was cleared of the domestic violence charge. Both sides reportedly reached a conditional agreement, in which there could be no contact between Enunwa and the woman for 90 days.

Enunwa will miss the games against the Patriots, Raiders, Jaguars and Bills. He'll be eligible to return to the Jets' active roster on Nov. 13.

"We support and respect the NFL's decision to suspend Quincy Enunwa," the Jets said in a statement. "The New York Jets share the NFL's ongoing commitment to raising awareness of the frequency and impact of domestic and relationship violence, supporting survivors, and encouraging others to speak out and seek help."

At the time of the incident, Enunwa was a member of the Jets' practice squad. A year later, however, he's playing 50 percent of their offensive snaps. He has eight catches for 94 yards in five games.

Jets report card against Redskins (J.P. Pelzman) The Record October 20, 2015

http://www.northjersey.com/sports/football/jets-report-card-against-redskins-1.1436519

Run offense: A+

RB Chris Ivory has back-to-back 100-yard rushing games for the first time in his six-year NFL career. After gashing Miami for 166 yards on Oct. 4, he rushed for 146 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries Sunday. Give credit to another great effort by the offensive line, but Ivory also should be commended for making quick and decisive cuts to wherever the hole might be. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick contributed an 18-yard TD on a scramble.

Pass offense: B+

Fitzpatrick compiled his highest passer rating of the season (113.1) despite throwing one interception. He threw for 253 yards and two TDs, both in the second half. WRs Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker each lost a fumble in the first half, leading to a pair of Washington field goals. But both caught second-half TD passes. Decker also atoned with a 35-yard catch to set up a touchdown, and Marshall made an outstanding adjustment to catch an underthrown ball from Fitzpatrick, turning it into a 35-yard score.

Run defense: A+

The Jets completely shut down the Washington running game, limiting the Redskins to 34 yards on 17 carries, with a long gain of a paltry 8 yards. FS Marcus Gilchrist and ILB David Harris stuffed Redskins RB Chris Thompson for a 1-yard loss on third-and-goal from the 1 in the fourth quarter, keying a successful goal-line stand.

Pass defense: A

Star CB Darrelle Revis allowed an easy 2-yard TD catch to Pierre Garcon in the first quarter, but that was the only major blemish in this area. Revis made up for that mistake with a momentum-turning interception of Kirk Cousins in the third quarter, setting up the go-ahead touchdown. Gilchrist also picked off Cousins, whose longest completion was 20 yards. DL Sheldon Richardson and DL Muhammad Wilkerson shared the Jets’ lone sack.

Special teams: D

The Jets were guilty of an incredible gaffe that could have been costly in a closer game. They had only 10 men on the field for a fourth-quarter punt by Ryan Quigley from his own end zone. The Redskins blocked the kick and recovered it for a TD. K Nick Folk connected on two of three field-goal attempts, missing from 49 yards. Jeremy Kerley had a 22-yard punt return, his longest of the season.

Coaching: B+

The failure of coach Todd Bowles and special teams coordinator Bobby April to notice they were a man short on that punting situation lowers the grade. Otherwise, Bowles and his staff were solid. He and DC Kacy Rodgers did a good job of getting Richardson back into the mix in his return from a four-game suspension, using a lot of 4-3 fronts to do so. OC Chan Gailey wisely stuck with a good thing by continuing to utilize Ivory extensively, even dialing up three screen passes to him for 50 yards.

October 19, 2015

http://www.northjersey.com/sports/jets-quincy-enunwa-suspended-four-games-1.1436264

FLORHAM PARK – Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa has been suspended for four games, effective immediately, for violating the NFL’s policy on personal conduct.

The discipline stems from Enunwa’s involvement in a domestic-violence incident last year, in which he was charged with simple assault of his then-girlfriend.

Enunwa, a 2014 sixth-round draft pick from Nebraska, was arrested Aug. 31 at a hotel near the Jets’ complex. The criminal complaint accused him of “grabbing the victim by her ankle and pulling her off a bed and causing her to strike and injure both her head and finger.”

The charges eventually were dismissed when the woman declined to pursue the case. Enunwa spent most of the 2014 season on the practice squad but was active for the season finale and made his NFL debut in that game at Miami.

He won the No. 3 wide receiver job in training camp this year and has eight receptions for 94 yards in five games. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Enunwa has been a force in the team’s running game with his blocking.

Jets coach Todd Bowles, who found out Monday about the suspension, admitted he was “surprised” by the timing of the decision, adding the Jets were aware since late in the preseason that Enunwa might face discipline from the league.

In a statement, the Jets said, “We support and respect the NFL’s decision to suspend Quincy Enunwa. The New York Jets share the NFL's ongoing commitment to raising awareness of the frequency and impact of domestic and relationship violence, supporting survivors, and encouraging others to speak out and seek help.”

Enunwa will miss games against New England, Oakland, Jacksonville and Buffalo. He is eligible to return to the team on Nov. 13, the day after the Thursday night game against the Bills.

Jets’ Quincy Enunwa Is Suspended for 2014 Assault Allegation (Ben Shpigel) New York Times October 19, 2015

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/20/sports/football/jets-quincy-enunwa-suspended-for-four-games.html?ref=football&_r=0

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — In its continuing clampdown on domestic violence, the N.F.L. suspended Jets receiver Quincy Enunwa for four games for violating the personal conduct policy.

Enunwa’s suspension took effect Monday. He will be eligible to rejoin the Jets on Nov. 13, the day after they play Buffalo in Bills Coach Rex Ryan’s return to MetLife Stadium.

Enunwa, 23, was a sixth-round draft pick out of Nebraska last year. He has eight receptions for 94 yards in five games this season.

In a statement, the Jets said they supported the league’s decision to suspend Enunwa, who was arrested Aug. 31, 2014, and charged with simple assault at a hotel near the Jets’ complex here. The police said that Enunwa pulled a woman off a bed and that she hurt her head and finger, but that she opted not to pursue the case. Charges were dismissed in municipal court last October.

Jets Coach Todd Bowles said he learned of a possible suspension about six weeks ago, but he was not notified until Monday.

“I’m surprised it happened so late in the season, being it’s something that happened last year,” Bowles said. “That’s the process they went through, and they took their time going through it, so we respect the decision.”

In December, the N.F.L. adopted a revamped personal conduct policy, which included more stringent guidelines for players and league employees involved in domestic violence cases — suspensions of six games instead of two for first-time offenders. But the league has applied the rule inconsistently.

ESPN.com, citing an anonymous source, reported that Enunwa’s suspension was reduced to four games because he cooperated and expressed remorse during the process.

Loss of Quincy Enunwa will not hurt Jets' passing game (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York October 19, 2015

http://espn.go.com/blog/newyork-jets/post/_/id/55168/loss-of-quincy-enunwa-will-have-no-impact-on-jets-passing-game

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- A few thoughts on Quincy Enunwa's four-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal-conduct policy:

1. This isn't a crushing loss for the New York Jets. After all, we're not talking about a Sheldon Richardson-caliber player. Frankly, I don't think it hurts them at all in the passing game. Enunwa is a liability as a receiver -- only eight catches in 17 targets, including three drops. The coaching staff is infatuated with his size (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) and blocking ability, preferring him over the more accomplished Jeremy Kerley. Maybe now Kerley will get more reps; that would be a good thing.

2. The suspension came down one day after Enunwa played a season-high 73 percent of the offensive snaps in the win over the Washington Redskins. He replaced struggling rookie Devin Smith as the No. 3 receiver, but it's possible the Jets made that move to improve their perimeter blocking on running plays -- a big part of their game plan for the Redskins. It's not known if Enunwa had surpassed Smith on the depth chart or whether it was simply a one-week move.

3. It leaves the Jets with only four healthy bodies at receiver -- Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Smith and Kerley. Chris Owusu (knee scope), sidelined the past three games, is close to returning, but his status for Sunday against the New England Patriots remains uncertain. Still, it's not cause for alarm. If Owusu isn't ready, they can go with Marshall, Decker and Smith as the top three, with Decker in the slot. Kerley could play in four-receiver packages.

4. This season, the Jets have had almost as many suspensions (three) as wins (four). Not good.

We'll miss the quotes, but Jets are better off without Rex Ryan's bluster (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York October 19, 2015

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The most compelling figure in the recent Border War rivalry is 3,500 miles away from home, preparing his team for a game in London. Yep, old Rex Ryan sure was a lot of fun when it came to talking about the New England Patriots. He was part football coach, part carnival barker, always calling out Bill Belichick and raising the stakes to Armageddon levels. Ryan spent six years hammering the same theme: I'm not here to kiss Belichick's rings.

The headline-loving folks in the audience, including yours truly, will miss Ryan's sound bites this week.

The New York Jets will not.

Want extra hype for this Sunday's Jets-Patriots matchup? Sorry, Jets fans. Todd Bowles has made it clear that you shouldn't count on him for any. Brad Penner/USA TODAY Sports

Ryan's departure to Buffalo will hurt from an entertainment standpoint -- even his players enjoyed the bluster -- but the Jets will be better off with the even-keeled Todd Bowles, who refuses to buy into the hype surrounding this Sunday's first-place showdown. He won't bury a football (see: Ryan, 2010) or punch a wall (2014) if he loses, and he won't plan a parade route if they happen to upset the defending Super Bowl champions.

Instead of asking his players to make a huge emotional investment in the game, as Ryan often did, Bowles continues to invoke the boxing analogy he unveiled at the start of the season. Each game is one round, and the season is a 16-round fight. Sunday is Round 6.

"Winning this game is not going to make us, losing this game is not going to break us," Bowles said Monday in a monotone that sounded a lot like Belichick.

Ryan's rah-rah approach can work in small doses. After all, the Jets rode that emotion to a few pulsating wins over the Patriots in the coach's early years. No one will ever forget that epic playoff game in January 2011, the franchise's biggest win since Super Bowl III. That was vintage Ryan who provided us with a week of fire and brimstone. The following week, he took a subdued, business-like approach for the AFC Championship Game and, not surprisingly, the Jets came out flat, falling to a Pittsburgh Steelers team they should've beaten.

Manufactured emotion is like unrefrigerated milk. It doesn't stay good for long.

"Good teams don't ride the emotional roller coaster," guard Willie Colon said. "They're strong, steady and they're staying straight ahead. They're staying in their lane. They don't look left or right and see what other teams are going through.

"We're trying to be that team," he continued. "We don't have to look at what Buffalo is going through and what New England is going through. We just have to worry about the New York Jets, be competitive, fight and play at a high level. If we're able to do that, we're going to be fine. We're not trying to catch up with anybody. We're not trying to make any statements. We just want to win."

It's a delicate balance, of course. You don't want a team of robots, but you also don't want a team of frothing, over-heated wackos. The latter leads to inconsistency, wild swings of emotion and performance issues. Classic example: In 2013, the Jets upset the Patriots in overtime only to show up comatose the following week in Cincinnati, suffering an embarrassing 49-9 loss to the Bengals.

Such was life on the Rex Coaster. It was fun, but dangerous.

Let's not be naive: The players know this week is different, that it's not just one of 16. If the Jets (4-1) beat the Patriots (5-0), they'd move into a first-place tie -- a mere 10 months after one of the worst seasons in franchise history. So, yeah, it's important. Sheldon Richardson said that Jets players will be "licking our chops," a point of view that conflicts with Bowles' mantra, but there probably won't be too many of those

Page 11: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

quotes emerging this week from the locker room. They will manage their emotions better than in the past because the man in charge -- Bowles -- knows how to manage himself.

It might be a dull week for headline writers. At least they have the Mets.

Jets' Quincy Enunwa suspended four games due to 2014 arrest (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York October 19, 2015

http://espn.go.com/newyork/nfl/story/_/id/13926339/quincy-enunwa-newyork-jets-suspended-four-games-nfl

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa was suspended Monday for the next four games without pay for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, stemming from a domestic violence arrest at a New Jersey hotel in August 2014.

The arrest occurred one week after the NFL implemented a new domestic violence policy that included a six-game suspension for first-time offenders. Enunwa avoided a six-game ban because of his cooperation and remorse, according to a league source. The policy allows for the possibility of mitigation.

According to a high-ranking NFLPA source, Enunwa's suspension was a negotiated settlement between the NFL and the NFL Players Association. As such, there won't be an appeal. This is the first time the league and union have cooperated with any domestic violence-related discipline since the new personal conduct policy was released.

At the time the charge was dismissed, the NFL office indicated it still would review court documents, but the league anticipated no discipline for Enunwa, an NFL spokesman said at the time.

He will be eligible to return to the active roster on Friday, Nov. 13, the day after the Jets face the Buffalo Bills.

The woman involved decided not to pursue the matter, and the case was dismissed in court last October after Enunwa agreed to have no contact with the unidentified woman for 90 days.

Coach Todd Bowles, who heard at the end of the preseason that Enunwa was facing a likely suspension, was puzzled by the timing.

"I'm surprised it happened so late in the season being that it happened last year," Bowles told reporters. "But that's the process they went through and they took their time going through it. We respect the decision, and we're going to move forward."

Enunwa was charged with domestic violence assault after "purposely, knowingly or recklessly, causing bodily injury," according to the criminal complaint. He was accused of "grabbing the victim by her ankle and pulling her off a bed and causing her to strike and injure both her head and finger," the complaint said, not mentioning the severity of the injuries.

The incident occurred at a hotel less than a mile from the Jets' facility.

Soon after the suspension was announced, the Jets released a statement, saying, in part, the Jets "share the NFL's ongoing commitment to raising awareness of the frequency and impact of domestic and relationship violence, supporting survivors, and encouraging others to speak out and seek help."

Enunwa, a sixth-round pick in 2014 who spent last season on the practice squad, played well in the preseason and earned a role in the wide receiver rotation. On Sunday, he was the No. 3 receiver, playing in 49 of 67 offensive snaps in the victory over the Washington Redskins. He also was a gunner on the punt team.

Bowles said he learned of the suspension Monday morning.

Enunwa, 23, has eight catches for 94 yards. The suspension will cost him $102,000 in game checks.

The former Nebraska standout is the third player on the Jets to serve a suspension in 2015. Defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson returned Sunday from a four-game marijuana suspension, and he could face additional discipline under the personal conduct policy because of a July arrest. Guard Oday Aboushi, since released by the team, was suspended for the first game for violating the substance abuse policy.

For a change, Jets-Patriots will have impact on standings (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York October 19, 2015

http://espn.go.com/blog/newyork-jets/post/_/id/55159/for-a-change-jets-patriots-will-have-impact-on-standings

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Welcome to Patriots week.

To whet your appetite for Sunday's first-place showdown, easily the biggest New York Jets-New England Patriots game since the 2010 AFC Divisional Playoffs, we provide five things you need to know about the recent rivalry.

1. The Patriots are 5-0, the Jets 4-1. As former Patriot Darrelle Revis said after Sunday's win, "We've been playing lights out." The last time the bitter rivals played a regular-season game with this much meaning was 2011, when both teams entered at 5-3. There was a lot of talk about how the Patriots were vulnerable, but they clobbered the Jets, 37-16. That quieted the vulnerability talk. From 2012 to 2014, the Jets pretty much stunk, draining a rivalry of its usual electricity.

Darrelle Revis' return to the Jets from the Patriots generated some offseason controversy between the rivals. Getty Images

2. Not only has Tom Brady "run the division," as Sheldon Richardson pointed out Sunday, but Brady has run the Jets. The Patriots have won seven of the last eight meetings, figuring out ways to win even in the games in which they were outplayed. Last year in Foxborough, the Jets did almost everything right, holding the ball for nearly 41 minutes, rushing for 218 yards and committing no turnovers -- and they lost, 27-25, when a long field-goal try was blocked as time expired. They became the first team in NFL history to produce those stats and still lose a game. Rex Ryan was so angry that he punched a wall on the way to his postgame news conference. Years of pent-up frustration were unleashed with that punch.

3. The last blowout occurred Nov. 22, 2012. You may remember that night as "The Butt Fumble" game, a 49-19 New England win. Mark Sanchez tried to make something out of an aborted play, he ran toward right guard Brandon Moore ... and, well, you know the rest. Since then, the rivalry has been extremely competitive, as the last four meetings were decided by three points or less. The Jets stole one of them, prevailing in overtime in 2013, 30-27, in what is remembered as "The Push Game." The Patriots' Chris Jones was flagged for a rare pushing penalty, nullifying a field-goal miss from 56 yards by Nick Folk in OT. That allowed the Jets to get closer, setting up the game-winning field goal. Ryan and Bill Belichick exchanged barbs through the media for a couple of days, but the Patriots got the last laugh, as they always

Page 13: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

do. In last year's nail biter in Foxborough, it was Jones who blocked Folk's kick, sans the push. Belichick took much joy in pointing that out after the game.

4. All things considered, the Jets have done a respectable job of defending the Patriots' two biggest stars, Brady and tight end Rob Gronkowski. In the last four meetings, they held Brady to five touchdown passes, keeping him under a 50-percent completion rate in two of those games. Gronkowski scored only one touchdown in the last three games, although he amassed 19 catches over that span.

5. The rivalry, of course, transcends football. The franchises have been bickering for the better part of two decades, the last dispute occurring last offseason when the Patriots filed charges against the Jets for tampering with Revis while he was under contract. It stemmed from Woody Johnson's end-of-the-season news conference, when he put foot in mouth by declaring he'd welcome a Revis return. After Revis signed with the Jets, they filed a counter charge against the Patriots, hoping to send a message to the league that the Patriots' claim was just as frivolous as theirs. It didn't work. Johnson was fined $100,000. Curiously, the league office never issued a public statement on its ruling. It just sort of went away.

Todd Bowles unveils defensive wrinkle, another look for Patriots to digest (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York October 19, 2015

http://espn.go.com/blog/newyork-jets/post/_/id/55151/todd-bowles-unveils-defensive-wrinkle-another-look-for-patriots-to-digest

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- There was a lot of speculation last week on Sheldon Richardson and how he'd be deployed in his season debut for the New York Jets. Would he play a lot or a little? Base or sub packages?

The answers: A lot and neither (kind of).

Reaching into the not-too-distant past, Todd Bowles employed a game plan from last season that worked for his Arizona Cardinals against the Dallas Cowboys. On Sunday, Bowles scrapped his 3-4 base defense in favor of a 4-3, adding Richardson at defensive tackle to the already formidable trio of Muhammad Wilkerson (end), Leonard Williams (end) and Damon Harrison (tackle). Richardson wound up playing 49 of 63 defensive snaps in the 34-20 win over the Washington Redskins, far more than anyone anticipated.

The immediate reaction to the tactical switch: This was just Bowles adding another defensive lineman to the scheme so he didn't have to cut playing time for one of his three regulars -- i.e. the easy way out. Afterward, he explained that wasn't the case.

"It wasn't just to accommodate Sheldon from a game-plan standpoint," he said. "Most of their run game is based off the double-team and people getting up to the linebackers on the second level. We thought we could take that away and put another guy down. They couldn't handle all of them. [It was] just to try to combat them."

It worked. Known for their power-running offense, the Redskins rushed for only 34 yards on 17 carries. Naturally, it helped that the Redskins were missing two starters on the offensive line, including Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams. What's more, the wrinkle will give the New England Patriots something else to think about this week as they prepare for Sunday's showdown.

Veteran Bowles watchers will recall he did the same thing last season as the Cards' defensive coordinator. Facing the eventual NFL rushing champion, DeMarco Murray, he used a 4-3 front against the Cowboys, straying from his beloved 3-4. That worked, too. They held Murray to 79 yards on 19 carries, and the Cards

won the game, 28-17. Naturally, it helped that Tony Romo was injured; Brandon Weeden started for the Cowboys.

On Sunday, Kirk Cousins played the role of Weeden, a non-threatening quarterback who didn't have his No. 1 weapon, wide receiver DeSean Jackson. The Jets intercepted Cousins twice, holding him to a 57.9 passer rating.

In their 4-3, the Jets deployed David Harris as a true "Mike" linebacker, with Calvin Pace (strong) and Demario Davis (weak) used as on-the-line linebackers. The odd-man out was outside linebacker Quinton Coples (nine snaps), who played only when they used a 3-4. In the nickel, Williams slide inside with Richardson, with Leger Douzable (subbing for Harrison) joining Wilkerson on the outside. On a handful of plays, Wilkerson and Richardson rushed from a stand-up position, allowing them a running start.

"Every defensive lineman likes to stand up," Richardson said, smiling. "That's a universal thing."

The Jets recorded only one sack (a Wilkerson-Richardson split) and five quarterback hits, but that could be attributed to Washington's short-passing game. Cousins got rid of it quickly, if not accurately. Richardson, returning from a four-game marijuana suspension, was credited with a half-sack and three assisted tackles in his return.

A look at the Jets' snap counts:

DEFENSE (based on 63)

Line: Wilkerson 59, Williams 57, Richardson 49, Douzable 33, Harrison 25, T.J. Barnes 5.

Secondary: Marcus Gilchrist 63, Darrelle Revis 63, Antonio Cromartie 63, Calvin Pryor 55, Dexter McDougle 25, Buster Skrine 23.

Chris Ivory backs up Brandon Marshall's boast with another big game (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York October 19, 2015

http://espn.go.com/blog/newyork-jets/post/_/id/55107/chris-ivory-backs-brandon-marshalls-boast

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. –- Chris Ivory keeps making Brandon Marshall's boast look better and better.

The best running back in the league, according to Marshall, rushed for 146 yards and one touchdown in the New York Jets' 34-20 win over Washington on Sunday. And he did that on 20 carries after being rested for a good portion of the fourth quarter while the Jets led big.

Page 15: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

"Everybody laughed at me," Marshall said of his Ivory declaration from last Wednesday. "There were a couple of guys, I wish I could remember all their names, they laughed at me when I said Ivory is the best. And he is. And he proved it again today.

"Eight-man box, nine-man box ... [Washington] came out and said, we don't care about the wide receivers, we are going to stop the run. And Ivory again put up over 140 yards. He is amazing and he is the best in the league."

Ivory was his usual physical self, but he also showed terrific vision in seeing the open running lanes and where to cut for big chunks of yards. He had a 54-yard run early in the second quarter and was a threat in the passing game with three receptions for 50 yards.

Ivory's 196 yards from scrimmage marked a career high, topping the 175 he had in a game with the Saints in 2010.

Marshall wasn't too shabby himself Sunday. Despite losing a fumble early in the first half, the Jets' physical receiver had seven catches for 111 yards and a touchdown. Marshall became the first Jets receiver to post four straight 100-yard-receiving games since Don Maynard in 1968.

"Man, people just making up any kind of records," Marshall said. "It's like, 'Hey, he had over 100 yards on turf on Sunday before the sun went down.' Anyone can make up any kind of stats. I am just trying to do my best and prove my worth."

He certainly made up for his fumble with some spectacular catches. He made a one-handed grab with his left hand going across the middle. And his 35-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter was not only a terrific adjustment around a defender to an underthrown pass by Ryan Fitzpatrick; Marshall also caught the ball just before it hit the turf.

But Marshall seemed a lot more impressed with Ivory, who has rushed for 312 yards and two touchdowns in his past two games.

Does Ivory agree with Marshall's assessment of him?

"Yeah, I feel like I am one of them, you know?" Ivory said.

What might surprise Marshall is that Ivory doesn't even think this is the best football he has ever played.

"One of the better years," Ivory said of how he's playing. "I can say that, but I don't think it is the best football I've played."

Chop-licking Jets need to play better for longer to beat Patriots (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York October 19, 2015

http://espn.go.com/blog/newyork-jets/post/_/id/55118/chop-licking-jets-need-to-play-better-for-longer-to-beat-patriots

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- On one side of the locker room sat Sheldon Richardson, young and ultra-confident. He had just played his first game of the season, yet he already was feeling the positive vibes surrounding the New York Jets' 4-1 start. The brash defensive tackle said the Jets are "licking our chops" at the prospect of facing those bad-boy champions from Foxborough, Massachusetts -- the New England Patriots.

Across the room stood veteran guard Willie Colon, who has been around the block more often than most Uber drivers. He's not shy on confidence -- he can out-swagger just about anyone when he feels like it --

Page 16: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

but he also recognizes the enormity of the challenge. The Patriots are good, very good, and they can make you look bad, really bad, if you forget to pack your A-game.

"When they smell blood," Colon said, "they kill."

The Jets should heed Colon's words, and they should use their 34-20 win against the Washington Redskins as Exhibit A on how to prepare for the Patriots: If they repeat what they did against Redskins -- not show up for the first half -- they will get punched in their licked chops. The Patriots aren't the Redskins, and they will make the Jets pay dearly if they pull another stinkeroo by committing three first-half turnovers.

Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets have plenty to celebrate at 4-1 but face the defending champion Patriots next. Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

"The Pats are still king, not only of our division, but of the league," Colon said. "They're the Super Bowl champs. It's going to take all of us on deck, ready to go. ... If we're not on our P's and Q's, we're going to get embarrassed."

In a way, Sunday was the ideal tuneup game for the Jets. They were bad enough to provide plenty of teaching points for coach Todd Bowles and his staff, yet good enough to inflate their confidence to the necessary level. Next Sunday will be their biggest game in four years, and their minds should be in the right places after burying the banged-up Redskins (2-4) by scoring 24 unanswered points after halftime.

"Our confidence is really high," Richardson said. "We're not on no high-horse, but you're supposed to have confidence in yourself."

With Chris Ivory doing another Earl Campbell impersonation, and with Ryan Fitzpatrick having his weekly pitch-and-catch with Brandon Marshall, the Jets racked up a season-high 474 total yards on offense. For the first time in years, they have two big-time weapons on offense, Ivory and Marshall. Ivory (20 carries for 146 yards) became the first Jets' player since Freeman McNeil (1985) to rush for at least 140 in back-to-back games. Marshall (seven catches for 111) became the first since Don Maynard (1968) to have four consecutive 100-yard receiving days.

Maynard and McNeil? We're really digging into the archives, but that's the kind of year it has been for Ivory and Marshall. Eric Decker didn't show it in this game (he lost a fumble and dropped two passes), but he's a solid No. 3 option in this offense.

"They're great players," Fitzpatrick said of his "Triplets."

They weren't great in the first half, as Decker and Marshall -- who also lost a fumble -- played hot-potato with the football. Fitzpatrick contributed to the poor start with an interception. The three turnovers led to 13 points for the Redskins, who actually led at halftime, 13-10. Bowles didn't get mad, according to players, but he called out his veterans and demanded leadership.

"The [halftime] message was energy, energy, energy, and see what we're made of," Bowles said. "The veterans were going to lead us, and they did."

Darrelle Revis made a game-changing interception, Marshall scored on a shoestring catch-and-run and Crazy Legs Fitzpatrick scored on an 18-yard scramble -- the longest run by a Jets' quarterback since Richard Todd (1980). There you go, more archives.

The Jets are off to their best start since 2010, playing for a chance to grab first place in the AFC East. Colon smiled when he heard that.

"What would y'all say then?" he asked reporters.

Yeah, they're cruising now, but be careful. They've defeated only one team with a winning record and, as Sunday showed, they have a lot to clean up.

"I think we're getting better," the understated Bowles said. "We have a chance to be a decent team."

Stevan Ridley’s Jets debut could be his revenge game (Brian Costello) New York Post October 19, 2015

http://nypost.com/2015/10/19/stevan-ridleys-jets-debut-could-be-his-revenge-game/

The Jets expect to have running back Stevan Ridley back at practice this week, and possibly for Sunday’s game against the Patriots.

Ridley began the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, but is eligible to practice this week. Once he practices, the Jets have a 21-day window to add him to the active roster.

“I’m hoping to get him in pads and get him out there and let him run around,” Jets coach Todd Bowles said of Ridley practicing.

Ridley is recovering from knee surgery last year, when he was with the Patriots. The idea of him returning against his former team would be a juicy subplot to this week’s game. It seems unrealistic to expect him to play off of three days of practice, but Bowles did not rule it out.

“Maybe,” he said.

The Jets also can allow cornerback Dee Milliner to practice this week, but Bowles sounded unsure if that would happen. Milliner has been on short-term injured reserve after wrist surgery in August. Bowles said he needed to check with Milliner before making a decision on whether he could practice. Milliner is not eligible to play in a game until Nov. 8, when the Jets face the Jaguars.

Bowles did not have a good read on how long CB Buster Skrine (concussion) will be out. Bowles said Skrine told him he felt fine on Monday, but that does not mean a doctor will agree. Skrine left Sunday’s game in the second quarter with the head injury. The Jets would miss him greatly if he could not play against the Patriots.

Second-year cornerback Dexter McDougle played in Skrine’s place Sunday. Bowles said he liked what he saw from McDougle, who played his first NFL defensive snaps.

“He did some good things,” Bowles said. “He’s quick. Dexter’s a scrappy guy. He fights. He’s getting experience as we go. I thought he played well. The moment wasn’t too big for him.”

The Jets only had 10 players on the field in the fourth quarter when the Redskins blocked a punt for a touchdown.

“It can’t happen,” Bowles said.

Bowles did not identify which player should have been on the field. Judging from a prior punt, it appeared Zac Stacy was the culprit. But Bowles shouldered the blame for the screwup.

“We busted,” Bowles said. “They didn’t count them. We, as coaches, didn’t count them. We messed it up. I messed it up. It’s my responsibility.”

Jets show how far gone Rex Ryan is in Patriots showdown prep (Brian Costello) New York Post October 19, 2015

Over the past six years, you could always tell when it was Patriots week around the Jets’ locker room. The bluster was flying, the adrenaline was flowing and the feeling was always that Sunday’s game was the biggest of the year.

Those days are over.

Coach Todd Bowles wants the Jets to treat Sunday’s AFC East showdown with the undefeated Patriots like it’s just another game on the schedule. This, of course, is the direct opposite approach of his predecessor, Rex Ryan, who treated visits to Foxborough like a mini-Super Bowl.

“Winning this game is not going to make us. Losing this game is not going to break us,” Bowles said Monday. “We’re going to take the same approach we’ve been taking. You don’t get up or down for one game. That means you haven’t been playing hard in the first place. We’re going to continue to do our job and get better as a team and we’ll go forward from there.”

It does not make for interesting headlines, but maybe it will change the results. The Jets have lost seven of their last eight games with the Patriots. Their last win in Foxborough came in the 2010 playoffs. To be fair to Ryan, the Jets came awfully close to knocking off the Patriots a bunch of other times, but usually fell short.

Sunday’s meeting feels like the most important Jets-Patriots game in four years. As the Jets began to lose in the final years of the Ryan era, the games always had special meaning, but rarely actually meant much in the standings. You have to go back to 2011 when both teams were 5-3 to find a game that has the feeling of this one. The Patriots won that one 37-16, and the Jets wound up losing five of their final eight games.

This time, the Patriots are 5-0 and atop the division, as usual. The Jets are 4-1 and feeling good about themselves. But they are not pounding their chests.

Veteran guard Willie Colon was asked why the Jets are not talking up the Patriots game like in years past and laughed, knowing reporters were looking for him to take a dig at Ryan.

“New regime, new regime,” Colon said with a chuckle. “Next question.”

But Colon then expanded on Bowles’ mantra to the team to stay even-keeled, just like its coach.

“I think good teams don’t ride the emotional roller coaster. They stay steady. They stay straight ahead,” Colon said. “They stay in their lane. They don’t look left or right and see what other teams are going through. We’re trying to be that team. We don’t have to look at what Buffalo is going through or what New England is doing. We’ve got to just worry about what the New York Jets have to do and be competitive and play hard.”

Bowles said he wants the Jets to only worry about what they have to do, not what the Patriots or any other opponent is doing.

“I think once you have your culture set, and we’re still working on that, the team just goes as you go,” Bowles said. “We learn how to take care of ourselves. It’s never about the opposition. It’s always about ourselves first. As long as we worry about ourselves first, we’ll worry about the other team on Sunday.”

That being said, Bowles did acknowledge the challenge the Jets face with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady on Sunday.

“I can’t sit here and give you any adjective that any other coach hasn’t given you,” Bowles said. “He’s competitive. He’s smart. He’s tough. He studies. He’s accurate. He gets the ball out quick. He’s one of the ultimate quarterbacks of our time.”

Jets rewind: When Todd Bowles’ mastery gets revealed (Brian Costello) New York Post October 19, 2015

http://nypost.com/2015/10/19/jets-rewind-when-todd-bowles-mastery-gets-revealed/

The Jets beat the Redskins 34-20 on Sunday to improve to 4-1, setting up a huge AFC East showdown with the Patriots this week. Here are a few thoughts and observations about the win:

1. To me, coaches can be judged by how their teams play in the third quarter. By that point, you have seen what the other team’s game plan is and have halftime to adjust. You also have halftime to light a fire under your team if it’s having a lackadaisical performance.

On Sunday, Todd Bowles’ halftime heroics were on display. The Jets were sleep-walking in the first half, but exploded in the third quarter for 17 points. Players said Bowles made it clear he was unhappy at halftime, but was not a crazy man. He challenged the veterans to pick it up and they did. Darrelle Revis, Brandon Marshall and Ryan Fitzpatrick were in the middle of the comeback — all players north of 30.

The Jets have outscored opponents 34-0 in third quarters this season. That is an impressive mark that speaks volumes about Bowles. It really is amazing it took Bowles this long to get a head coaching job. He is built for the job. He seems to hit all the right buttons week after week. The decision to play a four-man front against Washington worked perfectly, buttoning up their rushing attack.

Now, let’s see how he matches up with Bill Belichick.

2. Bowles said he went to the four-man front strategically because the Redskins like to run a lot of double teams and he wanted them to have more guys up front to deal with. But he must have also wanted to see what that front would look like with Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, Damon Harrison and Leonard Williams on the field at the same time.

One word: impressive.

The group had 15 quarterback hurries, four hits and one sack. They also shut down the Washington run game. Washington finished with 34 yards on 17 carries, with a long of 8 yards.

This foursome will give offensive coordinators nightmares. Whom do you double-team in that group? Richardson has fresh legs. Wilkerson is playing at the highest level of his career. Harrison is immovable in the middle. Williams already looks like he belongs.

Good luck.

3. There are plenty of positives to cite about the Jets this season, but one negative that keeps popping up is poor special teams play.

Page 20: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

The Jets gave up a blocked punt for a touchdown in the fourth quarter Sunday. It won’t get much attention because the Jets were in control of the game, but it was inexcusable if you look at it. The Jets only had 10 players on the field. This is a failure on so many levels. A coach should be counting players on the unit and someone (usually the personal protector) on the field should be counting, too.

This was just the latest gaffe on special teams. They have given up two touchdowns and accounted for none. The return games are barely existent. Jeremy Kerley had a 22-yard punt return, his longest of the season, among his three returns, but fair-caught the other two punts he saw. Zac Stacy as the kickoff returner does not scare anyone.

Special teams coach Bobby April is a veteran of the NFL. He will keep shaking things up until he finds answers, but right now his unit is the weak link.

4. The Jets are benefitting greatly from all those first-round picks they have used on the defensive line in recent years. Wilkerson (2011), Richardson (2013) and Williams (2015) are all playing well. But they have not all been hits. Quinton Coples (2012) is barely playing these days. On Sunday, he played just nine snaps (14 percent). That is the lowest total of his career, lowering the mark set in their last game against the Dolphins.

Bowles has pointed to personnel packages as the reason Coples is not playing, saying it is not about his play. He likely will say the same this week if asked about Coples. The Jets ran a ton of four-man fronts against the Redskins, leaving Coples on the sideline.

But Bowles has said since he arrived, the best players will play. Coples’ dwindling playing time tells me the coaching staff does not believe he is one of the best players on the defense. The Jets face a decision this offseason with Coples. They already picked up his fifth-year option for 2016, which will be about $7 million, but they can release him for any reason other than injury and not have to pay him. Right now, it looks like he is a goner.

Revealing number: The Jets’ passing game is all about Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. Out of 107 completed passes, 55 (51 percent) have gone to Marshall or Decker. If you zero in on just wide receivers, the duo has caught 71 percent of the 78 receptions.

Can the Jets thrive like this? So far they have, but you have to think they will need a third option to appear at some point. The Jets receivers look like this: Marshall 37 catches, Decker 18, Quincy Enunwa 8, Kerley 6, Devin Smith 5 and Chris Owusu 4.

Game ball: Chris Ivory continued his huge season with 146 rushing yards on 20 attempts and a touchdown along with three catches for 50 yards. The 196 total yards is a new career high for Ivory. He is third in the NFL with 460 rushing yards and first in yards per game at 115.0. There are a few early candidates for team MVP, but I would vote for Ivory.

Surprising snap count: Rookie wide receiver Devin Smith played just 16 of 67 offensive snaps. That is a big drop from the 59 he played against Miami and 64 against the Eagles. The Jets used Quincy Enunwa as the third receiver more this week. Smith has been unimpressive early in his rookie season, but it is too soon to make any judgments. The coaches have said they believe it will come for Smith, but it was telling he played so little on Sunday.

Darrelle Revis on defense after call-out as pothead, ‘d–khead’ (Bart Hubbuch) New York Post October 19, 2015

http://nypost.com/2015/10/19/darrelle-revis-on-defense-after-call-out-as-pothead-d-khead/

With “friends” like this, Darrelle Revis doesn’t need enemies.

A former member of Revis’ inner circle is tagging him with a range of potentially damaging allegations, putting the Jets star on the defensive while he’s been instrumental in the team’s 4-1 start.

While Revis was not available for comment Monday, sources close to the cornerback portrayed John Geiger — his childhood buddy and longtime marketing manager — as bitter and unstable, and gave no credence to the Twitter diatribe.

Apparently upset at being omitted from a “60 Minutes” profile of Revis that aired Sunday night, Geiger blasted Revis as a drug user and an ungrateful “d–khead” in a rambling, sometimes incoherent series of Twitter posts.

“When Revis was getting drunk and smoking every night where was the ‘team’” Geiger tweeted, referring to Revis’ mother, uncle Sean Gilbert and agents Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod.

“The team was me,” Geiger tweeted. “I made sure he was cool. I made sure the drugs came in. I made sure he was cool.”

Geiger then tweeted at the NFL to urge the league to test Revis for marijuana, saying he helped set up the Jets All-Pro and Gilbert with a drug dealer.

“Test them,” Geiger tweeted to the league’s Twitter account.

Geiger also directed his ire at “60 Minutes,” mocking the show for references in its story to Revis’ love of art and taste in clothes.

“you wrote a bs story based on a guy [that] lived my life,” Geiger tweeted to the show’s Twitter account. “That d–khead don’t look at art. That’s me. I dressed his ass.”

Geiger later claimed he was hacked and deleted the tweets early Monday morning, then implied that he had been fired as a result of the ensuing social-media firestorm.

“Both of my parents had cancer,” Geiger wrote. “I was called up saying I was fired by Revis. Not a care in the world.”

Geiger then tweeted: “I will get deleted. [Jets owner] Woody Johnson is paying to delete this.”

Geiger and Revis have been friend since grade school growing up near Pittsburgh, and Geiger had been Revis’ manager since the perennial Pro Bowl selection was a first-round pick by the Jets in 2007.

“I’d say the easiest way to describe it would be that I’m the middle man,” Geiger told the Jets’ fan site Gang Green Nation in 2010. “You can’t get to Darrelle unless you talk to me.”

Bowles’ new Jets facing same old Belichick-Brady problem (Steve Serby) New York Post October 19, 2015

The driven traitor head coach, who walked out on the NYJ and became a genius four-time champion on the northern side of the hate-fueled Border War.

The driven cheater quarterback, still tormenting Jets fans growing old as they wait for him to grow old, the same way Knicks fans grew old waiting for Jordan to grow old.

There have been fleeting successes — Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez beat this Evil Emperors once in the playoffs after the 2010 season — but the light at the end of the tunnel is still a runaway train, engineered by Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, barreling down yet again on a Super dream last realized on Jan. 12, 1969.

And now it is a rookie HC of the NYJ, Todd Bowles, who gets his first crack at Brady and Belichick Sunday in Foxboro.

A loss won’t end the season, and a win won’t offer you a trip through the Canyon of Heroes.

But it is a game that will tell you who and what you are and may be able to become.

Bowles is not unlike every other coach not named Mike McCarthy who brings a team into the belly of the beast: his quarterback cannot measure up to Belichick’s quarterback.

It remains the single biggest roadblock keeping Belichick between the Jets and the Lombardi Trophy.

It doesn’t mean the Jets can’t win this game with Ryan Fitzpatrick.

It doesn’t mean Bowles and the Jets have to play the part of Villanova against Georgetown and play the Perfect Game.

But it would sure help if they could.

Brady appears to be on some post-Deflategate quest to defend his championship and have Roger Goodell hand him his fifth Lombardi Trophy. He has the Patriots on pact to win their seventh consecutive AFC East crown by cutting a swath of destruction through Goodell’s NFL.

Bowles doesn’t blink, and doesn’t want a team that blinks. He isn’t here to talk about the past. And why would he anyway?

Look at where the Jets were a year ago, and look where Bowles has them now.

The 2014 Jets were 1-4 with a four-game losing streak on their way to 4-12 following a 31-0 debacle in San Diego. Geno Smith went to the movies, lost track of the time and missed the Saturday night team meeting. And was yanked at halftime for Michael Vick. It was after that game the reign of GM John Idzik began to come under raging fire. Ryan blamed himself and said: “First off, I apologize to our fans — those that are left.”

He returned home and fielded a Jets team that lost 31-17 to Peyton Manning’s Broncos. Chris Ivory rushed eight times for seven yards. Four nights later, the Jets dropped a 27-25 heartbreaker in Foxboro.

Bowles will bring a disciplined, tough, smart, unified team to Foxboro. He will bring a pair of difference-makers who are among the best and brightest at their respective positions in Darrelle Revis and Brandon Marshall. He will bring a new and improved Chris Ivory, Beast Mode East, rampaging behind a bludgeoning, feisty offensive line. He will bring a defensive front the likes of which Brady has never seen from the Jets.

He will bring a team that is not afraid of the Big, Bad Patriots, or intimidated by them.

Fitzpatrick has to play a clean game, or close to it, bottom line. The good news is he won’t have to concern himself with Revis, who is Brady’s concern again, in case you haven’t heard. Except Brady (14 TDs, 1 INT) doesn’t take what the defense gives him, he takes what he wants. He’ll likely yawn and target Rob

Jets lose their No. 3 receiver to 4-game personal conduct ban (Brian Costello) New York Post October 19, 2015

http://nypost.com/2015/10/19/jets-lose-their-no-3-receiver-to-4-game-personal-conduct-ban/

The NFL suspended Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa for four games without pay on Monday for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

The suspension stems from an arrest on Aug. 31, 2014, on a domestic violence charge that was later dismissed. Enunwa, a 2014 sixth-round pick, was accused of causing injury to his girlfriend by “grabbing the victim by her ankle and pulling her off a bed and causing her to strike and injure both her head and finger,” according to the criminal complaint.

The woman later decided not to pursue the charges.

But the NFL must have felt there was enough there to suspend him. His suspension begins immediately. He is eligible to return to the team on Nov. 13, the day after they play the Bills.

“We support and respect the NFL’s decision to suspend Quincy Enunwa,” the Jets said in a statement.

“The New York Jets share the NFL’s ongoing commitment to raising awareness of the frequency and impact of domestic and relationship violence, supporting survivors, and encouraging others to speak out and seek help.”

Enunwa had played 50 percent of the team’s offensive snaps this year. He has eight catches for 94 yards.

What's the deal with the Jets' slow starts in games this season? (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media October 20, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/10/whats_the_deal_with_the_jets_slow_starts_in_games.html#incart_river

The Jets are 4-1, so there's not a whole heck of a lot for their fans to gripe about. But slow starts in games have been one big-picture issue for the Jets this season.

They can't afford to stumble out of the gates in Sunday's game at 5-0 New England. Jets coach Todd Bowles knows this better than anybody.

When asked for areas in which he'd like to see the Jets improve, Bowles on Monday pointed out the slow starts.

Page 24: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

"We still have to come out faster," Bowles said. "We have to come out and play a lot faster in the first half. We can't afford to do these things going forward. We just have to come out and get ourselves going a little bit earlier."

Here's what he means:

In the season-opener win over the Browns, the Jets led just 14-10 at halftime, before winning 31-10. Neither team scored in the first quarter.

In the Week 2 win at the Colts, the Jets had a better start. They led 7-0 after one quarter and 10-0 at halftime, on their way to a 20-7 victory.

In Week 3, the Jets trailed the Eagles 3-0 after a quarter and 24-7 at halftime. The Jets were down 24-0 at one point in the first half. The Eagles won 24-17.

The Jets played a reeling Dolphins team in Week 4 in London. The Jets led 10-0 after a quarter and 20-7 at half. The Jets won 27-14.

And this past Sunday against undermanned Washington, the Jets were tied at seven after one quarter and trailed 13-10 at halftime. The Jets pulled away in the second half and won 34-20.

So when you add it all up, the Jets have outscored their opponents 24-10 in the first quarter this year, and have been outscored 44-37 in the second quarter.

But in the third quarter, the Jets have a total 34-0 lead. And in the fourth quarter, the Jets have outscored their opponents 34-21.

In terms of the total half numbers, the Jets are up 61-54 in first half scoring, and 68-21 in second half scoring.

Jets promote ex-New England Patriot Kenbrell Thompkins from practice squad, source confirms (Darryl Slater) NJ Advanced Media October 19, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/10/jets_promote_ex-new_england_patriot_kenbrell_thomp.html#incart_river

As wide receiver Quincy Enunwa begins his four-game domestic violence suspension, the Jets are promoting receiver Kenbrell Thompkins from the practice squad to the 53-man active roster, a league source confirmed Monday.

The move was first reported by NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

Thompkins' promotion comes just in time for him to face his former team, the Patriots, whom the Jets will visit Sunday.

Thompkins, 27, joined the Patriots as an undrafted rookie in 2013. They released him last October. He quickly joined the Raiders, and was with them until early September this season. When the Raiders cut him, the Patriots brought him back, onto their practice squad.

In late September, the Patriots cut him off their practice squad. The Jets added him to theirs in early October.

Page 25: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

25 | P a g e

In Thompkins' 14 games with the Patriots, including nine starts, he made 38 catches for 519 yards and four touchdowns. His career stats are 53 catches for 728 yards and four touchdowns. He has played in 26 games, with 15 starts.

It is unclear if the Jets will have receiver Chris Owusu on Sunday in New England. He has missed the past three games, due to arthroscopic knee surgery. Owusu was the Jets' No. 3 receiver, and then Enunwa replaced him in that role after he got hurt. Now, Enunwa is out for four games.

If the Jets don't get Owusu back this week, their receivers besides stars Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker will be Thompkins, rookie Devin Smith, and now infrequently used veteran Jeremy Kerley.

Thompkins, who is 6 feet and 195 pounds, isn't really a big-bodied receiver like Enunwa, who is a skilled blocker. Owusu, Smith, and Kerley also lack Enunwa's bulk, so it might be hard for the Jets to replace Enunwa's blocking.

Enunwa's four-game suspension began Monday, so the first game he'll miss will be Sunday's trip to New England.

Buster Skrine, Stevan Ridley, Dee Milliner | Jets injury update to begin New England Patriots week (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media October 19, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/10/buster_skrine_stevan_ridley_dee_milliner_jets_inju.html#incart_river

FLORHAM PARK — Jets coach Todd Bowles on Monday provided an update on his injured players, coming out of Sunday's win over Washington. The Jets visit the Patriots this Sunday, so they ideally want to be at full strength.

Of course, that's not a realistic notion five games into an NFL season.

Here's a look at where the 4-1 Jets are at:

• CB Buster Skrine (concussion): He got hurt late in the first half against Washington, and was replaced by Dexter McDougle. Skrine is essentially a starter, as the Jets' slot cornerback. He is currently in the NFL's post-concussion assessment protocol, so that alone will determine when he can practice and play again. Bowles said Skrine will be evaluated Wednesday, when the Jets resume practice, after their off day. "He said he's feeling fine [Monday], but saying it and then doing other things are a different deal," Bowles said. But Bowles doesn't think it's impossible that Skrine could play in New England, based on what he's seen in these concussion situations before. (Then again, they are all different.) Bowles said he's "seen quite a few" players come back just one week after a concussion and play. As for how Skrine was injured, Bowles said, "I don't recall seeing it on tape. Somebody told me it was a pick play. I didn't see that much damage on that play, but I can't feel what he felt right there, so I'm not sure."

• RB Bilal Powell (ankle): He sustained a regular/lateral (non-high) ankle sprain against Washington and did not return to the game. Zac Stacy replaced him as the Jets' third-down back. "I don't know how sore he's going to be," Bowles said of Powell. "We'll see as the week goes forward."

• CB Marcus Williams (hamstring): Williams missed the Washington game after getting hurt in practice last week. He would've replaced Skrine if he was healthy on Sunday, Bowles said. So Williams is ahead of McDougle in the Jets' backup cornerback pecking order. "He's coming along," Bowles said. "I'll see if he can run around this week." It doesn't sound like a serious hamstring injury, but these things can linger,

Page 26: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

Daily Clips Cont.

26 | P a g e

especially for players who need to sprint, like corners. Being without both Skrine and Williams could hurt the Jets against the Patriots, since McDougle is an extremely inexperienced second-year pro.

• WR Chris Owusu (knee): He has missed the past three games after having his knee scoped. Bowles said he needs to see Owusu run around before determining if he will play Sunday. Owusu was the Jets' No. 3 receiver before he got hurt. Quincy Enunwa took over that role in Owusu's absence. But now, Enunwa is out for the next four games (domestic violence suspension). So the Jets need to hope Owusu can get healthy and return soon.

• RB Stevan Ridley (knee): He tore his ACL and MCL almost a year ago, last Oct. 12 against the Bills, when he played for the Patriots. Ridley began this season on the physically unable to perform list, so this is the first week he is eligible to both practice and play in a game. Bowles said Ridley "maybe" will play Sunday at the Patriots, but Bowles hasn't seen enough yet from Ridley to make that determination one way or the other. It looks like Ridley could practice at least on a limited basis Wednesday. "I'm hoping to get him in pads, and get him out there and let him run around," Bowles said. According to NFL rules, once a PUP list player starts practicing, his team has a 21-day window to put him on its 53-man active roster. So Ridley can practice this week and still not play Sunday. If he practices Wednesday, he could spend, at most, three more games off the 53-man roster. He'd have to be added by the Nov. 12 game against the Bills, at the latest.

• CB Dee Milliner (wrist): The injury-plagued former first-round draft pick is coming off wrist surgery. He is on short-term injured reserve. Since Week 6 has now passed, Milliner is eligible to begin practicing. He isn't eligible to play until after Week 8 (the Jets' seventh game). So he'll have to miss at least two more games. Bowles said he's thinking about trying to practice Milliner this week, but he needs to see how Milliner feels. Bowles sounded more hopeful about the possibility of Ridley practicing this week than Milliner practicing.

• S Jaiquawn Jarrett (knee): The backup safety missed the Washington game. It was his first missed game this season. "His knee is banged up," Bowles said. "I just know he can't run." Bowles said he won't know until Wednesday or Thursday if Jarrett will be able to play this week. Dion Bailey is the only other backup safety on the Jets' active roster. Rontez Miles and Ronald Martin are on the practice squad. Bailey is technically the backup strong safety behind Calvin Pryor, while Jarrett is Marcus Gilchrist's understudy at free safety.

Jets' 'new regime' means less emotional prep for New England Patriots, says Willie Colon (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media October 19, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/10/jets_new_regime_means_less_emotional_preparation_f.html#incart_river

FLORHAM PARK — Rex Ryan never minced words about Patriots week. Facing the Patriots is obviously a big deal for the Jets, because the road to the AFC East crown goes through New England. Ryan didn't mind acknowledging that truth — or even saying this game loomed larger than the rest.

With Ryan off coaching the Bills now, the Jets' new head coach, Todd Bowles, has brought a less emotional demeanor to his first Patriots week. So what's the reason for this steadier approach to Patriots week in 2015, as opposed to previous years?

"You know the answer to that," said veteran right guard Willie Colon. "You know why. New regime."

Page 27: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

27 | P a g e

Colon didn't name Ryan specifically, but it's clear what Colon meant. Colon made a similar point at the end of training camp. Bowles ran a tough camp. Colon said the Jets obviously needed it.

"It's been about business," Colon said of this year's training camp. "It's been about getting this team out of its bad ways and setting the pace for this team to be where it needs to be, and what we expect us to be."

On Monday, Colon said this when asked about the new approach to Patriots week: "I think good teams don't ride the emotional roller coaster. They stay steady, they stay straight ahead, and they stay in their lane. They don't look left and right, and see what other teams are going through."

You don't have to read too much between the lines there. Look, Colon isn't ripping Ryan. But Ryan is an emotional coach, and that comes at a cost sometimes, even though it's not like the Jets were entirely terrible in Ryan's time with them.

"Where we're trying to be at as a team, we don't have to look at what Buffalo is going through, what New England is doing," Colon continued. "We're not trying to catch up on anybody. We're not trying to make any statements. We just want to win. And everything will take care of itself."

Bowles outlined his approach to a big game week like this: "You want them amped up on Sunday. But as far as playing a game and playing a specific person, we try to treat everybody the same, and we go about our business the same way."

Players aren't robots. They can get too wrapped up in the emotions of a game, especially if that excessive gusto is evident in their head coach all week leading up to an important game. That was an issue at times for the Ryan-coached Jets.

"Emotions is a tricky word, because if you fall into it, you kind of lose focus on everything that needs to be done around you," Colon said. "The only way to keep emotions out of that is just focus on your job, and focus on the job at hand."

There has been a more business-like, even-keeled mindset around the Jets ever since Bowles arrived. So it came as no surprise Sunday and Monday to hear Jets players say they don't have anything to specifically prove in this Sunday's trip to New England, even as the Jets are 4-1 and the Patriots are 5-0.

The players roundly rejected the notion/reality that this is the Jets' first big test, a game that, if they win, could cement them as a legitimate playoff contender.

Whether the players actually believe this (and at least some probably do), they've stuck to the company line that this game is no more special than the rest.

(But of course it is, since it's a division game, the Patriots are in first place, and the Jets are nipping at their heels.)

You wouldn't hear Colon say that on Monday, though.

"It's Week 6," he said. "We just happen to be playing the New England Patriots. That's our mindset. We know it's going to be a tough team to go against. But for us, it's another chance for us to prove ourselves. The only thing we need to prove to ourselves is that we can win."

FLORHAM PARK — Jets coach Todd Bowles said Monday he was "surprised" by the timing of wide receiver Quincy Enunwa's four-game suspension, which the NFL announced shortly before Bowles' Monday press conference.

The suspension, without pay, stemmed entirely from Enunwa, the Jets' current No. 3 receiver, being arrested in August 2014 after an alleged domestic violence incident involving his then-girlfriend.

"Surprised it happened so late in the season," Bowles said of the suspension, "being that it's something that happened last year. But that's the process they went through, and they took their time going through it. So we respect the decision and we're going to move forward."

Enunwa's charge of domestic violence simple assault was eventually dismissed, because the woman decided not to pursue the case. But the NFL reserves the right to suspend a player after doing its own investigation.

Enunwa's initial suspension was for six games, according to ESPN. That is in keeping with the NFL personal conduct policy's punishment for domestic violence. But the league reduced the suspension to four games, because Enunwa cooperated with the investigation and showed remorse, ESPN reported.

The suspension will stand at four games, since Enunwa already went through appeal-related discussions with the NFL, according to Bowles. Specifically, the four-game suspension was a "negotiated settlement" between the NFL and the players' union, according to ESPN, so there won't be an appeal.

Bowles said he learned of a potential suspension for Enunwa around the Jets' final preseason game, on Sept. 3.

"They didn't know if they were going to suspend him or not," Bowles said. "It was something their camp and the league were working out, and we were waiting to hear word."

Bowles said he heard final word Monday from the NFL. He said the league did "not really" explain the timing of its process, or why the suspension took so long to become official, considering Enunwa was arrested more than a year ago.

Either way, Enunwa won't face the Patriots, Raiders, Jaguars, or Bills in the next four games. He can return from suspension for the Nov. 22 game at Houston.

Enunwa became the Jets' No. 3 receiver, behind Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, because Chris Owusu, the previous No. 3, underwent arthroscopic knee surgery.

Owusu has missed the past three games. It's unclear if he'll be ready to play in Sunday's game at New England. Bowles is hopeful he will return "soon," but won't know how soon until he sees Owusu run during practice.

Enunwa is a skilled blocker, a bigger-bodied receiver than Owusu or the Jets' other receivers, Jeremy Kerley and rookie Devin Smith. Kerley and/or Smith could see more action with Enunwa suspended, especially if Owusu remains sidelined. Enunwa played 49 of 67 snaps Sunday in the Jets' win over Washington.

"He played tough," Bowles said of Enunwa's season so far. "But we've got some receivers, and we've got some different types of personnel packages."

Through five games, Enunwa has eight catches, on 17 targets, for 94 yards and zero touchdowns. But his blocking skills will be much harder to replace than his limited pass-catching contributions.

According to NFL rules, Enunwa is not permitted to be at the Jets' facility during his suspension, because it falls under the league's personal conduct policy.

Players suspended under the NFL's substance abuse policy — like Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson, who just returned from a four-game ban — are permitted to be at the facility. They can work out with their teammates and participate in meetings, but just can't practice.

Jets receiver Quincy Enunwa suspended 4 games for 2014 domestic violence incident (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media October 19, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/10/jets_receiver_quincy_enunwa_suspended_by_nfl_for_f.html#incart_river

The NFL on Monday suspended Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa for four games for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

According to a person familiar with the situation, Enunwa's suspension stems from his August 2014 arrest on a domestic violence simple assault charge that was dismissed two months later in Florham Park municipal court. That person spoke to NJ Advance Media on condition of anonymity.

Enunwa's suspension begins immediately. He will not be eligible to return to the Jets' active roster until Friday, Nov. 13, the day after their Week 10 game at home against the Bills.

In a statement, the Jets said, "We support and respect the NFL's decision to suspend Quincy Enunwa. The New York Jets share the NFL's ongoing commitment to raising awareness of the frequency and impact of domestic and relationship violence, supporting survivors, and encouraging others to speak out and seek help."

Last year, in the wake of its mishandling of the Ray Rice case, the NFL established a protocol that mandates a six-game suspension for a first offense related to domestic violence. That protocol falls under the league's personal conduct policy. ESPN's Jane McManus, citing a source, reported that Enunwa's cooperation and remorse were factors in having the suspension reduced from six games to four. McManus also reported that the four games was a negotiated settlement between the league and the players' union, which means there will be no appeal.

Enunwa is a 2014 sixth-round draft pick who made the 53-man roster this year after spending last season on the practice squad. He has eight catches for 94 yards this season. Both totals are third-most among Jets receivers.

Enunwa was arrested on Aug. 31, 2014, after an incident with his then-girlfriend at the Wyndham Hamilton Park Hotel near the Jets' practice facility in Florham Park. According to court documents, Enunwa "knowingly and recklessly" caused "bodily injury to another, specifically by grabbing the victim by her ankle and pulling her off a bed and causing her to strike and injure both her head and finger."

The charge was dropped two months later after the victim decided not to testify against Enunwa.

At the time, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told NJ Advance Media, "We will review available court documents, but do not anticipate there would be a basis for discipline."

Even head coach Todd Bowles on Monday admitted he was "surprised" the league acted to suspend Enunwa now, considering the incident "happened last year." Bowles also said he first learned the league was considering discipline against Enunwa around the time of the Jets' last preseason game in early September.

Ryan Fitzpatrick has best game as Jet vs. Washington Redskins | QB report card (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media October 19, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/10/ryan_fitzpatrick_has_best_game_as_jet_vs_washingto.html#incart_river

EAST RUTHERFORD — Ryan Fitzpatrick is still a flawed quarterback; there's just no getting around that. It was true before he got to the Jets, it was true with the way he's played this season, and it was true again Sunday, when the Jets beat Washington, 34-20, at MetLife Stadium to run their record to 4-1 heading into Sunday's Big Game at the hated Patriots.

But, in the interest of fairness, I'm coming right out and saying it: Fitzpatrick turned in his finest performance of the season against Washington.

Let's start with the passing numbers: 19 of 26 passing, 253 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, a quarterback rating of 113.1, a Total QBR of 99.0. Let's add in the rushing totals: four rushes for 31 yards and a touchdown, including an 18-yard dash up the middle for a TD that gave the Jets a 20-13 lead in the third quarter. They never looked back.

The Jets had offensive balance—253 passing yards, 221 rushing yards—and all the pieces seemed to fit together. Those pieces are running back Chris Ivory (196 yards from scrimmage, including 146 on the ground) and wideouts Brandon Marshall (fourth-straight 100-yard receiving game, the first Jet since Don Maynard in 1968 to do that) and Eric Decker (four catches, 59 yards, one touchdown).

But Fitzparick also wasn't sacked—his sack rate is now down to 1.17 percent, best in the league. The Jets aren't explosive with him, but they are efficient. Fitzpatrick's Total QBR for the season is 76.6, which is fifth-best in the NFL. Seriously.

What Fitzpatrick did well: Other than when he tried to force a throw to Marshall's back shoulder in the second quarter, resulting in an interception after Marshall tipped it into the hands of cornerback Bashaud Breeland, Fitzpatrick didn't force anything. He was also largely accurate; he threw low for Marshall in the third quarter, but Marshall bailed him out by reaching down and turning to take the throw for an unlikely 35-yard touchdown. Fitzpatrick's 35-yard completion to Eric Decker in the first quarter, two plays before Ivory's 1-yard touchdown run, was a terrific throw:

Fitzpatrick was especially good when Washington pressured him: 8-for-11 for 117 yards and two touchdowns when pressured, according to Pro Football Focus. Fitzpatrick also got rid of the ball quickly—an average of 2.34 seconds, per Pro Football Focus. Among NFL starters on Sunday, only the Titans' Marcus Mariota and the Bengals' Andy Dalton delivered throws faster. And Fitzpatrick can run! He now has 65 rushing yards on 13 carries in his last two games.

What Fitzpatrick didn't do well: There was the interception and the underthrown ball Marshall transformed into a touchdown, as mentioned above. But Fitzpatrick also never bothered to throw the ball downfield much; he had no throws of 20 yards or more, and he was just 4 of 7 with a touchdown and an interception on throws from 10 to 19 yards. But those four completions accounted for 101 of his 253 passing yards. Sixteen of his 26 throws went to Marshall and Decker. The Jets aren't even pretending to throw to their tight ends anymore; just one target total for Kellen Davis and Jeff Cumberland. But you know what? It's working.

Jets report card, as they rally vs. Washington Redskins and move on to New England Patriots (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media October 19, 2015

EAST RUTHERFORD — The Jets did what they were supposed to do, and took care of business Sunday against undermanned Washington.

The 34-20 win, sparked by a 17-0 third quarter, improved the Jets to 4-1 entering next Sunday's game at the Patriots.

That will obviously be a much bigger test than Washington provided. But the Jets will happily take Sunday's win nonetheless.

As we usually do, let's grade the Jets' performance.

Offense: The Jets gained a season-best 474 yards. Yes, they turned the ball over three times in the first half, leading to all 13 of Washington's points in the half. But the Jets were able to move past those turnovers (Ryan Fitzpatrick's interception, wide receiver Brandon Marshall's fumble, and receiver Eric Decker's fumble) in the second half. The Jets got a field goal and touchdown on their first two second half possessions. Then they got touchdowns on their next two possessions — drives of 76 and 73 yards. Three touchdowns in four drives, with a field goal thrown in, is pretty impressive stuff to start a second half. The Jets gained 254 yards in the second half, during which they scored 24 points. Running back Chris Ivory was outstanding again. He ran for 146 yards (the third-best total of his career), one game after running for a career-high 166. Ivory also had 50 receiving yards. Marshall rebounded from that fumble and accumulated 111 receiving yards. Marshall became just the third Jets receiver ever with four straight 100-yard games, joining Don Maynard (1968) and George Sauer (1966).

Grade: A-

Defense: Washington gained just 225 yards, the fewest the Jets have allowed this season. Their previous low came in their last game, a win over Miami, which gained 226 yards. The Jets had two more takeaways against Washington (interceptions by cornerback Darrelle Revis and safety Marcus Gilchrist), bringing their season total to 15 — an average of precisely three per game. In the second half Sunday, Washington gained just 81 yards and scored zero points on offense. Over their past three games, the Jets have allowed an average of 227 yards. Defensive end Sheldon Richardson had half a sack and one quarterback hit in his return from a four-game marijuana suspension Sunday. That bodes well for the Jets' defense going forward. The Jets entered Sunday having stopped opponents on 18 consecutive third downs. Washington went 5 for 15 on third down, including 1 for 6 after halftime.

Grade: A+

Special teams: More issues with this group. Nick Folk made field goals of 35 and 39 yards, but he missed from 49 yards. Folk is now 8 of 11 on field goals this season. The Jets had a punt blocked in the fourth quarter that Washington fell on in the end zone for a touchdown — Washington's lone points after halftime. The Jets' punt coverage had been struggling entering Sunday. The Jets actually punted just twice in the game. One was fair caught. And the other was blocked for that touchdown. So even on a day when

Page 32: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

the Jets' opponent didn't actually return a punt, and further test the Jets' coverage, they managed to have problems with the punting unit.

Grade: C-

Coaching: The Jets had no business losing to Washington, yet they trailed 13-10 at halftime because of those three first-half turnovers. Credit to coach Todd Bowles for rallying his team and making the necessary adjustments at half. Bowles also got creative with his use of Richardson, employing a lot of 4-3 looks, and even lining up Richardson essentially as a stand-up linebacker sometimes. Good coaches can be flexible like this, and still thrive. That's what Bowles did Sunday. Obviously, it helps that he has talented players on his defensive line, and that Washington's offensive line was without two starters. But Bowles made it all work Sunday. Now comes a tougher task — beating coach Bill Belichick and the Patriots.

Darrelle Revis, Chris Ivory, Bobby April: Jets studs and duds vs. Washington Redskins (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advanced Media October 19, 2015

EAST RUTHERFORD — We've got all week to look forward to the Jets' showdown at the Patriots this Sunday in Foxborough, which will be for first place in the AFC East and a true test of just how good the Jets are under first-year head coach Todd Bowles.

But let's take just a little more time to review what the Jets did to beat Washington, 34-20, on Sunday at MetLife Stadium to improve to 4-1.

• No sacks. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick got right guard Willie Colon back from a knee injury, and again was not sacked on 28 dropbacks. Fitzpatrick has been sacked just twice the entire season. As we noted last week, it's a combination of the offensive line blocking much better than it did last year, quarterback Chan Gailey's system and play-calling (which includes a strong running game led by Chris Ivory), and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick's ability to get rid of the ball quickly.

• Balanced offense. The Jets totaled 453 yards, including 221 rushing and 253 passing. It's officially a trend.

• The defense keeps dominating. Washington came in leading the league in time of possession (34:18), but they had the ball for just 27:21 on Sunday, and rushed for just 34 yards on 17 carries. The Jets got defensive end Sheldon Richardson back from suspension, and they played a lot of 4-3 to contain Washington's rushing attack. It's the latest example of how drastically head coach Todd Bowles is willing to tailor his scheme based on an opponent.

But how about the individual players (and coaches)? For a closer look at which Jets played particularly well, click through the gallery above.

EAST RUTHERFORD — One of the big questions entering Sunday's game between the Jets and Washington revolved around just how much defensive end Sheldon Richardson would play in his return from a four-game marijuana suspension.

And also this: How might coach Todd Bowles work Richardson back into the defense, when rookie end Leonard Williams had played very well in his place?

As it turned out, Bowles opted for a lot of 4-3 alignments, with Richardson, Williams, end Muhammad Wilkerson, and nose tackle Damon Harrison on the field together. The Jets beat Washington 34-20.

It was an interesting approach by Bowles, whose base defense is a 3-4 look. The Jets were able to have success (albeit against an undermanned Washington offensive line that lacked two starters) while going with their adjusted approach.

Here's a look at how this impacted the snap counts, along with some other noteworthy items about playing time:

• Richardson rarely sat. He played 49 of 63 defensive snaps. He said afterward that the only package he wasn't a part of was the Jets' normal base 3-4 look. They didn't use it all that often.

• But what about the others? Wilkerson missed just four snaps, as he played 59. Williams got 57, and Harrison got 25. Harrison typically comes off the field when the Jets go to a faster, nickel package. The Jets' utility pass rusher, Leger Douzable, got a bunch of action — 33 snaps.

• Quinton Coples barely played. Because the Jets used a 4-3 look so often, that meant one of their linebackers was going to be the odd man out. Coples, the rush outside linebacker, was that guy. His playing time had been decreasing, because the Jets are using a lot of nickel, and he's not part of that package. He played just 15 snaps in their previous game, a win over Miami in London. On Sunday against Washington, Coples got nine snaps.

• Dexter McDougle got in. He replaced Buster Skrine as the slot cornerback after Skrine left with a concussion that might sideline him for next Sunday's trip to New England. Skrine played 23 snaps before exiting late in the first half. McDougle received 25 snaps. He's an inexperienced second-year pro — basically a rookie — who missed all of last season with a knee injury.

• Not much Devin Smith. At the wide receiver spot, the Jets most often went with Quincy Enunwa was their No. 3 guy, since Chris Owusu (knee scope) again sat out. Enunwa received 49 of 67 snaps, compared to 57 for Brandon Marshall, 56 for Eric Decker, 16 for the rookie Smith, and eight for Jeremy Kerley.

How did Sheldon Richardson play in return from suspension vs. Washington Redskins? (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media October 19, 2015

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/10/how_did_sheldon_richardson_play_in_return_from_sus.html#incart_river

EAST RUTHERFORD — As it turned out, Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson wasn't a part-timer at all in his return Sunday from a four-game marijuana suspension.

Richardson played the majority of the Jets' defensive snaps (49 of 63) in a 34-20 win over Washington. He split a sack with defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, and also had a quarterback hit. Richardson mostly acquitted himself well.

Jets coach Todd Bowles used a lot of 4-3 looks — with Richardson, Wilkerson, end Leonard Williams, and nose tackle Damon Harrison all in the game. The only package in which Richardson did not play was the Jets' base 3-4 look. Bowles went with Wilkerson, Williams, and Harrison in that package.

Bowles even had Richardson align at the second level, standing up like a linebacker, rather than in a three-point stance on the line. It was a creative way for Richardson to rush the passer, with a running start. Still, Richardson didn't get as much pressure on Washington's Kirk Cousins as Richardson would've liked.

"I did all right," Richardson said. "Not like I wanted to. I got back there a few times. I just need to get my pass rush endurance back up a little bit. But other than that, I'm all right. Sideline-to-sideline plays weren't as consistent as I usually have them, but other than that, it was good."

He said he wanted to get "a little bit" more penetration, but felt like himself on the field, "for the most part." He said his "little bit" of rust stems from "certain blocking schemes I've got to get back used to playing against."

Stamina wasn't an issue for him during the game, though.

"Not like I was dog dead tired," he said, adding that he felt "real good" after the game, though Monday morning soreness seemed inevitable.

"You feel better after a win than after a loss, so I feel pretty good," he said.

Before the game, he said, he was "a little more anxious than usual."

Playing in a 4-3 front Sunday wasn't a big deal for him, because he played in a 4-3 in college at Missouri.

"I've just got to work on getting up the field a lot more," he said. "I was used to two gapping."

(Here's more on how Bowles' one-gap, penetration-oriented defense differs from former coach Rex Ryan's approach, which required his defensive linemen to have those "two-gapping" responsibilities.)

Richardson was in a jovial mood after the game, even joking it was "bittersweet" that he had to split his sack with Wilkerson. He now has four sacks this year, leaving Richardson still with some catching up to do.

Williams, a rookie, immediately noticed Richardson's impact Sunday.

"The [Washington] o-line had to change their protection," Williams said. "You can't stay on double teams too long on one person, because we have so many guys up front. If you let one of us loose, then you create a one-on-one mismatch. It's going to be hard to slide [protections] to one guy or put too much attention on one guy, because we have so many people up front."

Now that Richardson is back, this is a problem offensive lines will have to deal with every week. It's clear that this Jets defense has extraordinary potential.

"It can be great," Williams said. "The sky is the limit going forward."

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Todd Bowles has Jets approaching Patriots without any fanfare or hype (Seth Walder) New York Daily News October 19, 2015

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/todd-bowles-jets-calm-focused-patriots-article-1.2403598

It may be Patriots Week, but you wouldn’t know it at One Jets Drive without looking at the schedule.

Players — well, aside from Sheldon Richardson — are adamant about treating the Patriots game the same as any other. It’s a cliche, sure, but it’s an unbelievable contrast from recent years, when the bravado would be at an all time high heading into games against New England.

So, what’s changed?

“You know the answer to that,” Willie Colon said. “I’m not going to fall into that.”

“You know why,” he added. “New regime.”

Yes, the difference between Rex Ryan and Todd Bowles might never be more evident than Patriots Week, where there used to be plenty of hype and now there is almost none.

“Winning this game is not going to make us, losing this game is not going to break us,” Bowles said Monday.

Wait, no talk of kissing rings or burying footballs or poking fun at Tom Brady? What the hell is going on here?

Todd Bowles is what’s going on here, as the rooike head coach has maintained an even-keeled approach this year even during crisis — his quarterback was punched in the mouth — and triumph — a 4-1 start.

And how about this? Ryan used to say divisional matchups had the weight of a game and a half. Bowles wasn’t buying into that.

“No, just one game for us,” he said.

Even Bill Belichick, in his post-game speech after the Patriots’ win over the Colts, mentioned the standings in relation to the upcoming game against the Jets.

“It’s gonna turn around pretty quick with these Jets. We’re playing for first place this week, so we need everybody ready to go,” Belichick said in a video posted on the Patriots’ website.

Bowles’ style has clearly rubbed off on his players.

“It’s Week 6,” Colon said. “We just happen to be playing the New England Patriots. That’s our mindset.”

“You can’t too much stock into one game,” Ryan Fitzpatrick added. “You prepare for all of them hard. If you preparing for one harder, this week than we did last week, then you’re not doing it right.”

Only Richardson really seemed to violate Bowles’ way of thinking, when he said on Sunday night after the team’s win that the team was “licking our chops” to face New England.

But while most of the Jets try and claim this is just another game, the reality is: it’s not. The Patriots are 5-0, the reigning the Super Bowl champs, and have won the division the last six years. The division title still goes through Foxoboro.

“You’ve got to win (divisional) games to get into the playoffs,” Eric Decker said. “Everyone knows New England’s the champions. They’re undefeated right now. They’ve played good football. It’s going to be a challenge for us.”

A season ago, the Jets, despite being an otherwise terrible team, lost both games to New England by a combined three points. But those games were meaningless, as the Jets were out of the playoff hunt by the time they played the Patriots the first time. Now, not only are the Jets hot, they’re a real postseason contender.

“Sitting 4-1, we know what our opportunities are in front of us. And we’ve got stack some wins, so to speak, as we move forward throughout the year,” Decker said. “This is a big game.”

Jets WR Quincy Enunwa suspended four games for 2014 domestic violence arrest (Seth Walder) New York Daily News October 19, 2015

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/jets-enunwa-4-game-ban-2014-domestic-violence-bust-article-1.2403161

One year later, Quincy Enunwa is paying for his domestic violence arrest.

The NFL announced Monday that it suspended Enunwa four games for violating the personal conduct policy. The suspension stems from a simple assault arrest on Aug. 31, 2014 after an alleged domestic violence incident, according to a source.

The charges against Enunwa were dismissed on Oct. 15, 2014 after the complainant, who was his girlfriend at the time of the incident, asked, via her attorney, that charges be dropped.

Todd Bowles said he heard in the preseason that there could be a suspension levied and admitted he was surprised it occurred so late into the season.

Though the discipline for a first-time domestic violence is normally a six-game suspension, Enunwa’s cooperation and remorse were a factor in it only being a four-game suspension, according to a source. There will be no appeal because the suspension was negotiated settlement between the NFL and NFLPA, according to a source.

“We support and respect the NFL’s decision to suspend Quincy Enunwa,” the Jets said in a statement. “The New York Jets share the NFL's ongoing commitment to raising awareness of the frequency and impact of domestic and relationship violence, supporting survivors, and encouraging others to speak out and seek help.”

According to police, the incident happened at the Wyndham Hamilton Park Hotel and the arrest occurred at 7:19 p.m.

Enunwa will miss the team’s games against the Patriots, Raiders, Jaguars and Bills. Enunwa has eight receptions for 94 yards this year.

Darrelle Revis’ ex-business manager John Geiger accuses Jets star of drug use in rant during ‘60 minutes’ profile (Seth Walder) New York Daily News

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/darrelle-revis-ex-business-manager-blasts-jets-star-article-1.2402863

Darrelle Revis' former business manager went on a Twitter rant Sunday night alleging the star cornerback isn't as squeaky clean as he was made out to be in a "60 Minutes" profile.

John Geiger, who was Revis' former manager and long-time close friend, blasted out a series of tweets in an airing of grievances for being pushed out of the inner-circle, including allegations of Revis using drugs. Geiger deleted the tweets but screenshots were taken showing the rant. The CBS program made reference to "Team Revis," the cornerback's support network made up of his agents and family.

"When Revis was getting drunk every night and smoking where was the 'team'," Geiger wrote in one tweet.

"The team was me. I made sure he was cool. I made sure the drugs came in. I made sure he was cool," the former manager tweeted.

According to an interview Geiger gave with Complex.com, he and the star cornerback had a falling out around the time of Super Bowl XLIX, saying Revis’ agents drove a wedge between the two Pittsburgh-area natives.

“I was at the Super Bowl. He won the Super Bowl (with the Patriots), and I tried to get on the field after and I couldn't. I didn’t talk to him for a week after that,” Geiger told Complex, alleging that Revis’ agents wanted to distance their client from the emerging sneaker designer.

The long string of tweets was diffcult to follow and bounced between subjects; from Revis' fashion to $500,000 supposedly missing to insults directed at Revis' agents to "60 Minutes."

"Revis is A f---ing liar. @60Minutes," Geiger wrote in one tweet.

"I have dm from Revis and the commissioner about hiring his uncle. Ppl fake," he wrote in another.

Revis' agents declined comment on the matter.

METRO NEW YORK

For Calvin Pryor III, it is more than a name (Kristian Dyer) Metro New York October 19, 2015

http://www.metro.us/sports/for-calvin-pryor-iii-it-is-more-than-a-name/zsJojs---MfnpPkIXcMbgM/

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – He is known as ‘The Third’ and it has nothing to do with anything on the football field and everything to do with an upbringing that he wants to honor. It is a tradition he hopes to uphold. It is more than just a name on the back of the jersey.

There is a subtle change to the back of the New York Jets No. 25 jersey this year, something that perhaps went unnoticed by most fans. Gone is the rookie year ‘Pryor’ on the name plate on the back, making way now for ‘Pryor III.” Calvin Pryor III, the Jets first round pick last year and the starting strong safety has made the change to the last name on the back of his jersey to pay tribute to his grandfather and father. He says that it doesn’t change the way he plays but in each of his seven tackles made this past Sunday for the now 4-1 Jets, there is a young man playing for the two men who came before him.

Page 39: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

In college at Louisville, he wore ‘Pryor III’ on his jersey, or as he simply shortens it to ‘The Third.’ Last year, everything happened so fast with Pryor being drafted and then getting into the swing of things in the NFL that he didn’t have the chance to get his full name on the back of the jersey; it just wasn’t something he was able to think about and when he got his jersey it was too late to make a change. But this offseason with time to “chill,” Pryor III asked Director of Equipment Gus Granneman about his desire to go back to representing his family and making it read the way it did in college.

Of course the organization had no problems with his decision but it wasn’t as easy as all that.

Pryor III had to provide the team with a copy of his birth certificate and it was then forwarded to the NFL’s offices along with the necessary paperwork. Once the league examined everything, they then notified the Jets that they had a greenlight to put ‘Pryor III’ on the back of his jersey. The first time he wore the new look on his back was in the Jets first game of preseason (their practice jerseys only have numbers, no names).

After year of just being ‘Pryor’ now he was putting on his back three generations.

“They noticed. My dad was the one actually asking me if I was going to put ‘The Third’ on the back like I did in college,” Pryor III told Metro.

“At the end of the day, it’s nice to have those jerseys lined up, from college to the NFL. They represent you, it feels good. You want to play for your name, for your family. That’s an important thing in life.

“Hopefully one day when I have a child, I hope to keep the trend going.”

Pryor III has a daughter right now but he admits that if he has a son, it might well continue on the tradition and become Calvin Pryor IV. He won’t pressure his possible progeny to follow in his footsteps, even if a possible Pryor IV sounds like another hard-hitter at safety and s sure-fire first round pick. The Jets safety said simply “Whatever he wants to be, a doctor, a lawyer, whatever makes him happy. That’s what I want, for him to be happy and taken care of.”

And in turn, the second-year safety has settled in quite nicely with the Jets this year. He’s overcome some of the growing pains of being a rookie and now looks every bit the part of the first round pick from a season ago.

While at Louisville, Pryor III wore the full name in college – “it was important for me to wear my dad’s name and my grandad’s name. I like being a part of that tradition.” It is a tradition he now carries into every tackle, every play he makes in the NFL.

“I just want to go out there and play the game, that’s what is fun,” Pryor III said. “That I get to do it with their names on my back just adds something to it.”

Through five games this year, he is third on the Jets this year with 30 tackles. Last year in 16 appearances Pryor III had 60 tackles in his rookie season.

Clearly, ‘The Third’ is growing up nicely.

Patriots on to next 'rival' in much-improved Jets (Jimmy Toscano) Metro New York October 20, 2015

OK, so the Patriots didn’t beat the Colts by 70 points.

Page 40: October 20, 2015 - National Football Leagueprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/... · 2015-10-20 · October 20, 2015 1 | P a g e ... We'll miss the quotes, but Jets

In fact, they didn’t even cover (Vegas always seem to know..).

But they did win. And though Tom Brady seemed less than thrilled with the performance, all that matters is they left their business trip in Indianapolis with a 5-0 record.

Of course, they had some help. The Colts actually looked like a competent football squad for the first half. They led the Patriots, 21-20, as thoughts of a Patriots blowout vanished after a Colts opening-drive touchdown.

And then “SnapFu” happened.

You already know what play we’re referencing. With the Patriots now leading 27-21 late in the 3rd quarter, the Colts faced a 4th-and-3. Inexplicably, they tried a fake punt play in which nine of the eleven players rushed over towards the nearside sidelines and lined up . . . illegally. On top of that, the two players who stayed in the middle of the field – the “snapper” and “quarterback” – actually snapped the ball and were promptly tackled by a hoard of Pats.

It was, by all accounts, one of the dumbest plays in NFL history.

That gave the Patriots ball on Indy’s 35-yard line. Six plays later they’d score a touchdown to go up 13 points, and that was that.

It’s just the latest example of an opposing team psyching themselves out against the Patriots.

And one team that’s done that since the turn of the century is the New York Jets. Led by Rex Ryan from 2009 to 2014, the Jets did more than their fair share of trash talking – and even won a few games. But in the end, Ryan and the Jets were mostly just hot air (and the Bills might be finding that out the hard way this season).

Ryan’s up in Buffalo now and the Todd Bowles-led Jets are 5-1 as they prepare for New England this Sunday.

But just as Ryan still can’t get the Patriots off his mind, it seems like some of his former players can’t either. Take Jets DE Sheldon Richardson for example. Coming off a 34-20 win over the Redskins on Sunday, Richardson is already hyping himself up for next Sunday.

"[They’ve] run this division for a while so I am kind of happy we get next,” Richardson told ESPN. "We're getting after it. I mean, they are the Super Bowl champions. Just leave it at that. You know, licking our chops."

This is hardly trash talk, but does speak to the way other teams across the league – and especially the division – think about the Patriots.

There’s never been a bigger target on the collective backs of one team than this Patriots team has now.

To be the best you have to beat the best – everybody knows that.

But what Richardson and the rest of the NFL have to realize is that the Patriots are licking their chops, too.
