The following letter was sent to Michael Gravelle, Minister of Natural Resources by Mayor André Byham.

M. Michael GravelleMinister of Natural ResourcesSuite 6630, 6th floor, Whitney Block 99 Wellesley Street West

Toronto, OntarioM7A 1W3

Dear Minister Gravelle

We recen t ly learned through the media of the decision to close 10 Provincial Parks, including 2 in the Chapleau District. O n e o f t h e m o s t

disappointing facts associated with this announcement was your government 's decision not to under-take any prior consul-t a t i o n w i t h l o c a l g o v e r n m e n t s o r residents. It is hard to envision how we as citizens of Ontario can c o m e t o g e t h e r t o add res s t he many challenges we face

with an approach such as this. The decision to close the Shoals and Ivanhoe Parks repre-sents a loss of 2 full time positions as well as 6 part time posi-tions. The loss of jobs a s s o c i a t e d w i t h operational changes and the cancellation of future capital invest-ment will certainly harm the local econ-omy at a time when we can ill afford it. We in Chapleau are of the opinion that a constructive dialogue might very well lead to better outcomes than the one which has been i m p l e m e n t e d . I strongly urge you to reconsider the decision that you have made and would l ike to further discuss these park closures. I believe that in an era where your government is promoting a Northern Growth Plan, they have just done the

opposite for Chapleau. I trust I will hear from you soon a n d e x p r e s s C h a p l e a u ' s b e s t regards

Letter to the Editor

Happy Birthday Honey/Mommy/GrammaLove and Kisses: Aldee, Andrea, Brett, Bryce, Joseph, Josh, Kylie, Larry,

Lisa, Marc, Nicole, Rachel, Ron, Sandra, Sonya, Tyler and Vicki.

It is with great sorrow that the family of Leona McCrea (nee Burns) announces her peaceful passing with her family by her side on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Hospital. Leona was a devoted wife, wonderful Mother and nurturing Grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband Guy (1985) her infant granddaughter Catie McCann (1986) and her son Tommy (1996). Left to mourn are her children Marjorie(Larry McCann), John (Pam Irwin), Eileen (Ted Zajac) and Joan (Jim Atkinson), her six grandchildren Lindsay (Jeff Sage), Kieran McCann (Meghan), Nathan

Atkinson, Justin Zajac(Krystel), Evan Atkinson(Crystal) and Jessica McCann as well as her two great grandchildren Cooper and Molly Sage. Leona was an associate member of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception and devoted countless years to volunteer work at the Marianhill Nursing Home in Pembroke. She was an avid bridge player and spent many enjoyable hours at her bridge club in both Pembroke and Red Lake. She always had the time to help neighbours or friends in need. Mom was a great lady whose kindness touched so many lives in a positive way. She taught and inspired her children to be compassionate to those who were less fortunate. Leona will also be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews and many friends and neighbours. The family would like to thank the staff at the Red Lake hospital for their gentle care to keep Mom comfortable during her last days. John, Eileen and Joan with the greatest love and appreciation want to acknowledge their sister Marjorie and her husband Larry for their devotion and tenderness – by making your home, Mom's; you made the last years of her life the very best that they could be. We are so blessed to have you - you are a perfect example of everything that Mom taught us. We will lay you to rest Mom, but we will always love you and never forget you. Friends are invited to share their memories of Leona with her family during visitation at the MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 296 Isabella Street, Pembroke, Ontario on Friday 7 - 9 p.m. The Mass will be celebrated on Saturday morning October 20 at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Lourdesview Drive, Pembroke. Internment St. Columba's Cemetery. In memory of Leona, donations to Covenant House or the Red Lake Margaret Couchenour Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

The Chapleau I n t e r m e d i a t e " A " Huskies inaugurated the Moore Arena at the Chapleau Recreation Centre, 34 years ago on October 7 and 8, 1978 winning two exhibition games agains t the Valley East Crusaders. With a crowd of more than 500 fans on hand for each game, t h e H u s k i e s w e r e "equal to the task" a c c o r d i n g t o t h e Chapleau Sentinel, winning both games 6-4 and 5-4 respectively. Doug Prusky, who had been a star with both the Chapleau Junior "B" and Inter-mediate "A" Huskies until an injury forced his retirement was entering his second year as coach of the H u s k i e s . D a v i d McAdam and Glen Cappe l lan i shared goaltending duties. John Tavella of Wawa, now playing for the Chapleau team, who had set an Ontario Hockey Association

record for most points by a rookie when he played for the Sault Greyhounds, earned the honour of scoring the first goal in the Moore Arena at the 17:10 mark of the first period. Pat Swanson assisted. The Sentinel reported that in the first game, Tavel la and Jamie Doyle came through with "super performances culmi-nating their efforts with two goals each. Entering their four th year in the Northland Intermediate Hockey League, the Huskies, were playing the newest entry. The Crusaders were the 1 9 7 7 - 7 8 S u d b u r y Intermediate League champions. The first period ended in a 1-1 tie. Doyle scored his first of the night in the second with assists g o i n g t o R i c h a r d L a c r o i x a n d B i l l Scheer. The Crusaders again tied the match but

Ron Larcher scored on an unassisted effort, and the period ended 3-2 for the locals. But the Crusad-ers roared to the attack in the third pulling ahead by one goal. R i c h a r d Lac ro ix , who had returned to the lineup after an absence started the comeback when he "put home one of his blasts" assisted by Larcher and Jacques Sylvestre. Fans were d e l i g h t e d t o s e e Lacroix back with the Huskies. He had been the team's leading scorer and Rookie of the year during its first year of operation in 1 9 7 5 - 7 6 . Ta v e l l a scored his second of the night. W i t h s i x minutes left Doyle scored his second of the night assisted by Bill S c h e e r a n d D a v e M c M i l l a n , w h i c h turned out to be the winning goal. Veteran referee Jim Hong kept the g a m e w e l l u n d e r control handing out only minor penalties to both clubs.

Tave l l a was again the big marks-man in the second game as he scored twice and earned one assist. In the second game, Larcher opened the scoring for the H u s k i e s a f t e r t h e Crusaders had taken the lead. Ted Swanson, who never missed a game in the team's four year history, assisted on Larcher's goal. McMillan put the Huskies ahead with assists to Ted Zajac and Ted Swanson. Although the

Crusaders came back again, John Simon, also from Wawa, who had also played for the Sault Greyhounds, scored his first goal in a Chap leau un i fo rm assisted by Tavella and Pat Swanson to give the locals a 3-2 edge at the end of the second period. Simon's son Chris played in the N a t i o n a l H o c k e y League. In the third, the Crusaders t ied the game, but Tavella put the Huskies back in f r o n t a s s i s t e d b y McMillan and then scored the winner assisted by Simon and George Card.

As an aside, while chatting with Graham Bertrand, co-chair of the Chapleau High Schoo l 90 th anniversary reunion c o m m i t t e e , h e reminded me that the recreation centre had been officially opened on June 29, 1978, 34 years to the day of the b e g i n n i n g o f t h e reunion. I n 1 9 7 8 , Graham was the trainer for the Huskies, as well as serving as chair of Taste of the North the winter carnival and as a m e m b e r o f t h e Chapleau Recreation Centre. It’s been brought to my attention that there are MNR employees, who are in the outfitters business. Working for MNR gives them the ability to influence the rules in order to restrict access to crown land. “Subsec t ion 39(1) of the Public Lands Act says, 'No person holding an office in or under the Ministry and no person employed in or under the Ministry shall, directly or indirectly, purchase any right, title or interest in any public lands either in the person’s own name or by the interposition of any other person or in the name of any other person in trust for the person without the a p p r o v a l o f t h e Lieutenant Governor in Council.' “Minister, are y o u p r e p a r e d t o i n v e s t i g a t e t h e s e claims and guarantee equal access to crown land to all Ontarians? “Every year O n t a r i a n s a r e r e s t r i c t e d f r o m accessing more of our natural resources due to MNR putting up restriction signs and tearing up roads. A two tier system has been created and, worse still, MNR staff are in the middle. “ P e o p l e i n Northern Ontario are saying that MNR staff have purchased or

leased crown land. Instead of protecting our natural resources they're benefiting from that land. And they’re setting the rules that leave local residents out and advantage others with greater means to pay. “What is your Ministry prepared to do to investigate?” asked Mantha.

v ie i l l i s san te es t un pouvoir économique pour notre communauté.

On v o u s e n c o u r a g e tous/toutes à acheter une c a r t e d e m e m b r e . C h a q u e d i r e c t e u r / directrice a des cartes à vendre.

V i e i l l i r i c i a v e c dignité!!!

MAISON BOREAL HOME INC , on avance!

This event was always a very exciting time for all children which attended and we are proud to bring it back with the encourage-

There will be a little something for all who attend including raffles for the grown-u p s , b a k e s a l e s , spooky arts and crafts, face pa in t ing and halloween games for all children. Parents can attend the event free of charge and children will receive an activity card which can be redeemed for goodie bags at a cost of $3 per card. This event

allows the children to enjoy the festivities of halloween in a super-vised, safe environ-ment. Halloween can be an exciting time for children and with the distraction of candy and costumes, safety rules can easily be forgotten. Here's a few simple tips to keep Halloween night a safe night for all: Children under the age of nine should be accompanied by an adult or responsible older child since they may lack the skills to cross the street on their own. difficult to check for o n c o m i n g t r a f f i c before crossing a road. F o r d r i v e r s Halloween means that there will be more children out on the streets. Drivers need to take extra care. Drive slowly in residential areas where chi ldren are more likely to be trick-or-treating. Did you know that drivers cannot accurately judge their o w n s p e e d w h e n driving? The higher the speed, the less likely you are to see a child pedestrian, and the harder it is to stop quickly. Watch out for kids, many of whom m a y b e w e a r i n g costumes with masks that make it difficult for them to see. With the exci tement of Halloween, children may forget simple pedestrian safety rules. They have a tendency to dart out in the most unexpected places - the most common being between parked cars. Remember also that costumes can limit a child's vision and they may not be able to see your vehicle. Remember to

enter and exit drive-w a y s s l o w l y a n d carefully. Excited trick-or-treaters may run on sidewalks, or dart out unexpectedly. Proceed with caution, when entering or exiting the roadway.

We wish you all enjoy a safe and happy Halloween with your loved ones and we hope to see you at the Recreation Center on Saturday, October 27th between 1 and 4 pm for a funfilled spooky afternoon.
