Korean Stall Report. International day was truly an enjoyable time where all the students in Carlingford High school celebrated the multiculturalism in this school. The number of different cultures in this school is huge. There were varieties of stalls but the one which stood out from all of the countries was definitely Korea. After weeks and weeks of preparation for this day, International day finally came. And Korea boasted its unique culture – food, games, band, and music. The delicious menu of the Korean stall included “bulgogi” (Korean bbq), “kimbab” (sushi), “ddockbokki” (hot chilli rice cake) and “goon mandu” (fried dumplings) and a lot of chilled Korean drinks such as “shikhae”. The large amounts of foods we prepared were soon all sold out. The foot wrestling game was organised by the Korean senior guys. Even though it rained people still kept coming and signed in to play the game. The band (made up of a year 12 guy, 3 year 11 guys and a year 10 guy) consisted of bass guitar, electric guitar, vocal, drums and keyboard. They attracted the students to the Korean stall. In the concert, John Kim played a romantic Korean ballad and Tae Kim played the Korean flute. They showed the musical aspect of Korea. The Korean Stall was a huge success! It raised around $1400, the best out of all. Thank you to all those people who helped – the setting up crew, the cooks, the sellers, the advertisers, the band, the game crew, decorators and… Mrs Owens! This day would have not been possible without everyone’s support. Thank you everyone for making supporting Korean stall! Andrew Kim (Year 10) Jenny Han (Year 12)

Opera Ed On September 8, I went to the Opera, to see Rigoletto, in an Opera Education program. Thirty students attended, from our music, drama, entertainment, textiles, art and dance classes. I went as a textiles student. We went behind the scenes, and learnt all about the opera. We toured Opera Australia, and saw rehearsal rooms, sets being designed, constructed, fixed up and painted. We went into the costume manufacturing room, where there were lots of industrial sewing machines, fabrics, mannikins, and people working on costumes. It was amazing to see how all the costumes were made. Opera costumes used to be very heavy, and some still are, but with new techniques, most costumes are able to be made to look large and heavy, but are really not that heavy.

We were also able to see wigs being made, and how each little hair had to be put in place. The people who were running the program brought out some old costumes, which we were allowed to try on. They were very elegant, and detailed, and extremely heavy. It was an amazing experience to go behind the scenes of the opera. I loved looking at all the costumes and designs. Its amazing just how much work goes into the production of an opera, it is all very exciting. Stacey Anderson Year 10, Textile Technology

A Day at the Zoo (or A Perfect Storm) Ok, so it may be a bit late but I am finally getting around to sharing a few snippets from our Year 7 Zoo excursion. Firstly let me say that it is a huge effort to organise an excursion. This was my first since coming to Carlingford. Next year we will make a few changes—like posting the excursion form on the school intranet. So many students lost their forms that in the end we must have done a reprint of almost 100. We will also endeavour to enable parents to pay by credit card. This should expedite things considerably. Firstly, thanks again to all those parents who supported our cake stall. The Science Department hope to make this an ongoing event. We have received a postcard from the elephants letting us know they are indeed on their way. So Year 7 should make an effort to get to the zoo after they arrive to see the animals that they have supported. Their specially designed enclosure is incredible and a credit to those who designed it. There are specially designed wash bays with hot and cold running water, sleeping quarters, tea and coffee making facilities etc—just joking but it is pretty flash! As for the day, was it karma that made the drought break on that particular day? I know we are desperate for rain but it did make the day just a tad less enjoyable. At about 1 o’clock we looked out across the harbour and saw the most formidable storm clouds. We’re not in Kansas any more Toto! Time to get the troops together! It was probably about this time that the water spout was ripping roofs off houses in the eastern suburbs. In short, the students were great, taking the weather in their stride. All the students demonstrated courtesy to the public and represented Carlingford High School responsibly. It is important to note that all students were safely returned to school relatively dry. Thanks again to all the staff that accompanied Year 7 to the Zoo. Your help was greatly appreciated! Here are some comments from several Year 7 students. Mrs Diana Swift

On the 4th of August Year 7 went to Taronga Zoo. When I first came to school that morning it was a rainy day. The first part of the day was normal but then we got on the bus to Taronga Zoo. When we first got there Felicia Suwito, Francesca Kwan and I had about 20 minutes to look around before we went to the education place. First Felicia, Francesca and I looked at the cute, sleepy Koalas. Then we looked at tropical and native birds and frogs. Then after the education place we saw seals, reptiles, amphibians, tigers, snow leopards, lions and the list keeps on going and just as the exciting parts were coming we had to go back to school. I had a terrific time. Kavishie Amaratilaka 7I

On Friday 4th of August the Year 7 students of Carling-ford High School had a sci-ence excursion to Taronga Zoo for their topic “Living Things.” After a quick roll call and as-sembly we boarded the buses and sped off to Taronga Zoo. There was a cool, light sprin-kle of rain when we arrived, but even the weather couldn’t spoil anyone’s excited mood! For the whole day the only option we had was to have fun. There were the magnifi-cent animals, the breathtak-ing Sky Safari and the deli-cious food courts. During the day each class had a turn to visit the Education Centre, where we increased our knowledge of the five ver-tebrate groups—fish, amphibi-ans, reptiles, birds and mam-mals. We were all handed a work-sheet, which involved us ob-serving the animals and re-cording facts and sketches. There were many beautiful and exotic animals at the zoo such as lions and tigers, giraffes, zebras, chimps, apes and go-rillas, bears and crocodiles. The zoo had done a terrific job of replicating their natural habi-tats. One event that was very astounding was the Bird Show. The Taronga Zoo staff trained the birds exceptionally well,

making them fly just above our heads, with only an inch to spare. I was also lucky enough to see the zoo’s Leopard Seal being trained. It was able to leap right out of the water and fall back in again gracefully. The food that was sold at the Zoo was marvellously good tasting. While we tucked into our hamburger and fries, we enjoyed the spectacular view of Sydney Harbour. Also a very popular attraction at the Zoo was the Sky Safari, which carried us high above the animal enclosures. Later we presented a cheque of $1200 to Taronga Zoo for the Asian Ele-phants. This was from the students of Carlingford from the money from the cake stall co-ordinated by Mrs Swift. The cheque was supposed to be pre-sented by Damian Turco (7O) but he was unable to do so when he got stuck (along with myself, Cornel Rozumick and Clinton Le) on the Sky Safari. So Gabriella presented the cheque to Taronga Zoo. Well as the old saying goes—all good things come to an end. We had a quick roll call, then boarded the buses and rode back to School. This was a wonderful experience for everyone, and something I’m sure we’ll never forget. Michael Pierotti—7O
