ft In Memoriam &

It is with sincere sadness that we learn of the passing of PFC Clifton Walter, 19 of Erie, Pennsylvania, from wounds suffered when he was hit by fragmentations from a hostile device in the Viet Nam war near Da Nang.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Walter, 1040 West 34th St., Erie, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Tech Memorial High school in Erie in 1965 and enlisted in the Marine Corps in November following his graduation.

He had been a member of the Erie club since he was 11 years old and was an avid horseshoe pitcher as well as a top bowler in the Erie area. He had won many trophies in both sports. He captured the Class AA title in the Erie County horseshoe tournament last year.

In a letter home to his parents he had said: "I can't wait to come home and sleep as long as I would like. We will have some kind of a get-together when I come home, because it will be like a dream com-ing true, and will be the most wonderful day of my whole life to see all of you again."

To the promised land our friend has gone, To the land of perfect rest; His work is done, and the setting sun Has sealed his life's request.

He has left this earthly strand For a home beyond the heavenly seas; Though he is gone, he will still live on In our cherished memories.

He is survived by his parents, a brother, Donald and a sister, Vivian. He was laid to rest in Cranberry cemetery, Oil City, Penn-sylvania, with full military honors by members of the Erie Marine Corps Training Center.

Schneider In Play-off Victory Over Isais To Win California State Title

Jerry Schneider of Monte Bello, Calif, is the new California state cham-pion for 1966 by virtue of his play-off victory over Fernando Isais, former world champion from Gardena, Calif. Prior to the tournament, Schneider hit the stake for 88 ringers out of 100 pitches and 276 points for top qualifying score, erasing the old record of 88 ringers and 274 points set by Louie Dean of Pomona and former NHPA president of a few years ago. Regular play ended with Isais, Jon Snyder and Jerry Schneider tied for first place. Jerry was the eventual winner. Verdan Zelmar copped Class B with Class C going to Gunnar Hansen. George Hughey is the new Junior champion, having been the 1965 runner-up. The Ladies' title was retained by Elsie Gregerson.

This year's meet was held at South Gate, California during the last week of August.

Bakers Regains Missouri State Title More contestants than in any previous year turned out to compete in the

horseshoe contest at the 1966 Missouri State Fair. Besides increased state-wide interest in the game, the courts were moved from south of the grand-stand to a more favorable location and were increased from a battery of six to eight.

The defending champion, Paul Lattray of Webster Groves, was on hand to enter. After four rounds Lattray withdrew from the tournament due to a bad back ailment. His record at the time was 2-2.

Dave Baker, Wentworth, Mo., took the Class A championship. Baker was state champion in 1958. Second was Ray Cavin, St. Joseph, Mo. He has finished second in the tournament four times.

A total of 54 players were entered in the tournament. The top score of 251 was thrown by Bill Wamser, St. Louis. A low of 227 was recorded for Class A; a new record low of 216 for Class B; and another new record low of 196 for Class C. Nineteen players failed to make the finals.

At the annual election of state officers of the Missouri Horseshoe Pit-cher's Association Earl Winston, LaMonte, Mo., was re-elected president for two years. Charles Killgore, Plattsburg, was elected vice-president; and Herold Heidel, Rosebud, is serving his final year as secretary-treasurer. Missouri, had a record of 84 N.H.P.A. members for 1966.

All went quite well in spite of winds and some rain squalls Monday. Andy Paglarini of Hibbing re-captured the State Title (he held it in 1964, as well in 1962). The winds held the ringer percentages down pretty much. Tro-phies were awarded to top 4 in Classes A A and A, and to the top 3 in all other classes.

Don McCance In Easy Triumphant March To Nebraska State Title

Don McCance of Lexington, Nebraska retained his state crown by taking all opponents well in stride. He was never at any time in trouble. However the "old pro" Joe Foster, a former state champion, at one time in his game with McCance had a lead of 23 points, but it was to no avail as the titleholder kept up his steady drive to win the game 50-41. Trophies were presented to winners as well as cash prizes.

At the annual banquet, attended by 80 players and their families, Elmer Grage of Crete was the host. It was followed by the annual election of officers.

Much credit and appreciation is extended to the Crete city firemen, who handled all the scorekeeping chores and served ice tea and coffee during the tournament. They were resplendent in their uniforms as they kept things moving throughout the meet. The tournament was held at Tuxedo park in Crete, Nebraska.

Rislov In Initial North Dakota State Title Win Wally Rislov of Cooperstown, a 41-year-old right-hander, won his first

North Dakota state horseshoe pitching title Sept. 2 and 3 by winning eight of nine games.

Art Engebretson, of Fargo, 14-time champion, finished second. Gene Lykken of Kindred dealt Engebretson his second loss of the tournament to prevent a playoff between Engebretson and Rislov. Lykken was the top qualifier with 246.

It was the first time the tourney has been held at the Sertoma Park layout in Bismarck. The tourney drew a record number of 87 entries, many pitchers entered from this part of the state for the first time. Engebretson and Otto Loseth of Havana were honored for their work in the game.

The large turnout was spurred by interest in the 1967 World Tourna-ment, which will be held at Fargo. Members of the Red River Valley League in Fargo explained plans for the classic.

The tournament will be held in Bismarck again next year. Joe Wolf and Dick Neumann of Bismarck, officers in the Bismarck association, were key men in tournament arrangements. Henry Wisness of Fargo, state director, helped in the handling of the tournament.

Mrs. Anna Lindquist Recovering From Eye Ailment After many years as state secretary of the West Virginia state associa-

tion, Mrs. Anna has relinquished her scribe job to Bernard Hull, who was elected to take over her duties due to an eye ailment. It was her desire to be replaced so as not to put any undue strain on the eye.

At this writing she has apparently made a successful recovery and has returned to her position as a school teacher.

Mrs. Lindquist has been the one and only secretary-treasurer of the West Virginia state association and was instrumental in its being organized. She has been active as a player for many years, being in the ladies division of the World Tournament and having won the Ladies title several years back. She has been responsible for the State and the West Virginia Open, a regularly sanctioned event.

N.H.P.A. Championship Insignias Issued For Sanctioned Tournaments

Championship insignias are issued to the winners of all classes in all sanctioned tournaments upon request by the State Secretary in which the sanctioned tournament is held.

A sanctioned tournament is one which the State Secretary certifies by letter that all entries were or will be NHPA members. A tournament in which all the players in the top class or classes are NHPA members may be sanctioned for those classes upon request even tho the players in the lower classes are not all NHPA members.

The insignias of championship may be obtained in advance of a tourney or afterwards by a letter of request. These letters of request must be sent to Mrs. Charley Hopkins, NHPA Vice President, 124 South Cherry Street Ottumwa, Iowa 52501, who is in charge of this item for the National Assoc.

The number of sanctioned tournaments and the number of classes has increased tremendously in the past couple of years. The price of insignias has also gone up. Consequently a limit of one to a member has been placed on the awarding of these championship insignias regardless of how many tourney classes an individual has won during the season.

State Secretaries who have not requested championship insignias for 1966 are requested to write Mrs. Hopkins at once in order that she may place a supplementary order for the insignias.

The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/October, 1966

Gullickson To Head "Operation Publicity" In 1967 1967 will be known in horseshoe circles as the year of "operation

publicity". This is an area where the game is the weakest and coverage of the 1966 World Tourney by the press was the poorest ever.

NHPA President Harold Craig has appointed Will Gullickson of Moore-head, Minn, to head a publicity drive aimed at obtaining general newspaper and TV coverage of the game in general and the 1967 World Tourney in particular.

Will Gullickson has the tools and credentials to head the drive. He is Assistant Sports Editor of the Fargo-Moorhead Daily Forum, a good horse-shoe player in his own right and an NHPA officer.

He led the drive which landed the 1967 World Tourney in Fargo, is Secretary of the Red River Valley Horseshoe League and was elected 2nd Vice President of the NHPA at Murray this summer.

During the coming months, he will run a series of articles in the Digest on publicity designed to aid and instruct local clubs how best to obtain news-paper coverage and stories. The articles should be helpful and informative, for Will not only knows the game of horseshoe and has a real interest in it, but as a working sports writer on a daily newspaper knows all the publicity angles.

Look forward to his articles and make use of them.

World Tournament Humor — Who Was the 37th Player?

An unknown character from goodness knows where provided some humor during the tourney.

He first popped up on the morning of the Class B tourney sitting on an upturned water bucket at courtside eating his breakfast — green grapes and beer! When a call went out for scorekeepers he took the chair on court three, but was replaced at once.

He turned up again when the 36 Class A players were having their group picture taken. Walking by, he stumbled and fell while the camera man was getting set. He came to his knees just in time to be snapped in the picture in the front row, just as if he belonged there. When the picture came out there he was big as life and there wTere 37 players in the group picture.

are selling at a brisk pace throughout the Upper Midwest. The buttons — which admits the buyer to all sessions of the tourna-

ment and lalso serve as a fitting souvenir — were available at state tourna-ments at Duluth, Minn., Bismarck, N. D. and Vermillion, S. D.

Mail orders are being accepted by writing Will Gullickson, 1608 17th St., Moorhead, Minn. The buttons are $1 each.

Members of the Red River Valley League are selling buttons in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Numerous buttons were sold at the Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota state tournaments.

The Duluth Horseshoe Club, hosts for the Minnesota state tournament, purchased 40 buttons. Several other clubs have indicated they will buy up to 50 buttons for spring delivery.

T-shirts carrying the 1967 World Tournament emblem are also being sold. Orders for three dozen shirts were sold at the Minnesota state tourna-ment. The buttons and the shirts have the same lettering, giving the tourna-ment dates, site along with a horseshoe insignia. Names are lettered on the shirts also. They are available for $2.50 each writing Gullickson.

Horseshoe was headlined at the Melvin E. Hearl American Legion Post No. 21 September meeting in Moorhead. The world tournament plans were outlined and a brief film was shown.

Members of the F-M horseshoe association plan to give similar presenta-tions at area service clubs, horseshoe meetings and other groups throughout the year. Anyone interested in having one of the members attend their meeting should contact Gullickson.

The new nylon suspension system has eliminated some cost and improves the efficiency of the rubber pad greatly. The life of these pads should be at least ten years and are guaranteed for two years. These courts will make you a better horseshoe pitcher and we guarantee the ringers you throw will stay there. Every shoe will feel the same every time you pitch it.

Complete Single Court Ready For Use Length of pad 36" x 27" wide x Vs" thick.

Single Court Without Rubber Pad Length of box 32" x IVh" wide x 4" deep.

Each end of the court is boxed separately and weighs approximately 38 pounds — 76 pounds for the complete court. A conversion court that can be used to set over your present clay court is also available. The same pad is used on all styles and is interchangeable, which means that it can be used on clay and boxed in the portable for mobility.

The portable is stored easily in the trunk of your car, and can be set up ready to go in 5 minutes in your yard, on your drive, at the park, on the beach, at the lake, in your basement (if you have enough room), in the barn (if you are on the farm), in gymnasiums at school, or anyplace where there is enough room.
