WHYMN OF PRAISE: No. 385 “Amazing Grace!” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . NEW BRITAIN

Words: John Newton / Music: Benjamin Shaw, Charles Spilman; arr. Metzger / I Chronicles 17:16

Amazing grace! — how sweet the sound — that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed! The Lord has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, as long as life endures.Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; ‘Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’d first begun.

Rest in His Amazing GraceCORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O God of grace, You have shown us the way of life through Your Son, Jesus Christ. We humbly confess our slowness to learn of Him, our failure to follow Him, and our reluctance to bear the cross. We confess the poverty of our worship, our neglect of fellowship and of the means of grace, our hesitating witness for Christ, and our imperfect stewardship of your gifts.Forgive us, gracious God, for the many ways we fall short of Your glory.Grant us the grace to die daily to sinand to rise daily to new life in Christ, who lives and reigns with You,and in whose strong name we pray.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

HYMN OF PREPARATION: “His Mercy Is More” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .arr. Dustin LoehrsWords and Music: Matt Boswell and Matt Papa; arr. Dustin Loehrs / Psalm 136

Soloist and Choir: Praise the Lord, His mercy is more, Stronger than darkness, new every morn. Our sins, they are many; His mercy is more.

What love could remember no wrongs we have done, Omniscient, all-knowing, He counts not their sum. Thrown into a sea without bottom or shore; Our sins, they are many; His mercy is more.

WCongregation stands and sings:

Praise the Lord, His mercy is more, Stronger than darkness, new every morn. Our sins, they are many; His mercy is more.

What patience would wait as we constantly roam, What Father so tender is calling us home. He welcomes the weakest, the vilest, the poor; Our sins, they are many; His mercy is more. What riches of kindness He lavished on us; His blood was the payment, His life was the cost. We stood ‘neath a debt we could never afford. Our sins, they are many; His mercy is more.

SCRIPTURE LESSON. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Revelation 16:17-2117The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple, from the throne, saying, “It is done!” 18And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, and a great earthquake such as there had never been since man was on the earth, so great was that earthquake. 19The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of

the nations fell, and God remembered Babylon the great, to make her drain the cup of the wine of the fury of his wrath. 20And every island fled away, and no mountains were to be found. 21And great hailstones, about one hundred pounds each, fell from heaven on people; and they cursed God for the plague of the hail, because the plague was so severe.

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the Word of our God will stand forever. (Isaiah 40:8)

WGLORIOUS DAY

I was buried beneath my shame. Who could carry that kind of weight? It was my tomb, till I met You.I was breathing, but not alive. All my failures I tried to hide. It was my tomb, till I met You.

You called my name, and I ran out of that grave, Out of the darkness into Your glorious day.

Now Your mercy has saved my soul. Now Your freedom is all that I know. The old made new, Jesus, when I met You.I needed rescue; my sin was heavy, but chains break at the weight of Your glory. I needed shelter; I was an orphan, but You call me a citizen of Heaven. When I was broken, You were my healing. Now Your love is the air that I’m breathing I have a future; my eyes are open,

‘Cause when you called my name I ran out of that grave, out of the darkness Into Your glorious day.Words and Music: Jason Ingram, Jonathan Smith, Kristian Stanfill, Sean Curran; arr. Dan Galbraith / Ephesians 2:1-10

I won’t go back, can’t go back, to the way it used to be Before Your presence came and changed me.

All my shame, guilt, sins—forgiven. No more chains, fear—my past is over.

SCRIPTURE LESSON. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Nehemiah 8:9-189And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law. 10Then he said to them,

“Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” 11So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.” 12And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.13On the second day the heads of fathers’ houses of all the people, with the priests and the Levites, came together to Ezra the scribe in order to study the words of the Law. 14And they found it written in the Law that the LORD had commanded by Moses that the people of

Israel should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month, 15and that they should proclaim it and publish it in all their towns and in Jerusalem, “Go out to the hills and bring branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths, as it is written.” 16So the people went out and brought them and made booths for themselves, each on his roof, and in their courts and in the courts of the house of God, and in the square at the Water Gate and in the square at the Gate of Ephraim. 17And all the assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and lived in the booths, for from the days of Jeshua the son of Nun to that day the people of Israel had not done so. And there was very great rejoicing. 18And day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read from the Book of the Law of God. They kept the feast seven days, and on the eighth day there was a solemn assembly, according to the rule.

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the Word of our God will stand forever. (Isaiah 40:8)

SHARING THE BREAD AND THE CUP

THANK YOU, JESUS, FOR THE BLOOD

I was a wretch; I remember who I was. I was lost; I was blind; I was running out of time. Sin separated, the breach was far too wide, But from the far side of the chasm, You held me in Your sight. So You made a way across the great divide, Left behind heaven’s throne to build it here inside. And there at the cross, You paid the debt I owed, Broke my chains, freed my soul — for the first I had hope.

Thank You, Jesus, for the blood applied. Thank You, Jesus, it has washed me white. Thank You, Jesus, You have saved my life, Brought me from the darkness into glorious light.

You took my place, laid inside my tomb of sin. You were buried for three days, and then You walked right out again. And now death has no sting, and life has no end, For I have been transformed by the blood of the Lamb! There is nothing stronger than the wonder working power of the blood, The blood that calls us sons and daughters; We are ransomed by our Father through the blood, the blood.Glory to His name! Glory to His name! There to my heart was the blood applied — glory to His name!

NO. 573: IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,

“It is well, it is well, with my soul.”It is well (it is well) with my soul (with my soul). It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, Let this blest assurance control, That Christ has regarded my helpless estate, And has shed His own blood for my soul.My sin — O the bliss of this glorious thought! — My sin, not in part but the whole, Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more; Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! O Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll; The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend,

“Even so” — it is well with my soul.Words: Horatio G. Spafford / Music: Philip P. Bliss / Philippians 4:7

World Missions–Nick and Amanda: Nick and Amanda are waiting for God’s direction for their next steps. They were scheduled to return to Beirut in early September but decided to stay in the U.S. because of conditions in Lebanon: power outages, water shortages, no gasoline, very little medicine, closing of hospitals, little fuel for cooking, protests, and no functioning government. They are planning to stay here until the end of the year. Pray for them as they miss their friends in Lebanon and as they and their children “figure out life in America again.” Pray that government leaders and the Lebanese people would turn to the Lord. Pray for their teammates who have also been affected by conditions in Lebanon.

Mission Memphis–Downline Ministries: Through its Institute and Emerging Leader program, Downline Ministries seeks the restoration of Biblical discipleship in and through the local church. They praise God for a wonderful first few weeks of classes with students who are eager to learn. Please pray for God to grant continued healing and energy to Downline staff members and their families who are recovering from Covid. Pray as well for all students involved in the Institute and the EL program this year to experience a life-changing encounter with Jesus that would inspire them to make disciples of all nations.

2PC Ministry–Deacons: Deacons at Second oversee the church’s ministry of compassion—caring for the sick, the bereaved, the lonely, the grieving, and any member who is struggling—in addition to serving the church in more practical, material matters. Pray that Second’s deacons will serve Christ ultimately by serving the communities in which they’re involved; primarily by offering practical, physical help as needed; secondarily by setting an example for the congregation in volunteering in various ways all across the church; and indirectly by mobilizing our congregation to “devote themselves to good works” (Titus 3:14) throughout the city. Pray that each deacon would more deeply know the love of Jesus and rest in His truth alone, not relying on their own works but rather on the supreme, saving work of Christ.

Congregational Prayer Meeting: November 3On CityServe Sunday in August, we were challenged to consider how we might engage our city with the gospel of Christ. A key way we can participate in our Father’s mission is through prayer. We invite you to join us for the final of three monthly corporate prayer meetings on November 3.This guided congregational prayer time, led by our staff, will meet from 12:00-12:45 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Please join us to call upon the name of the Lord and seek His mercy and guidance for our church, our city, our country, and our world.

Women’s Equipping Forum: October 21Women in Ministry’s equipping forums address specific, relevant issues in order to train women in more effective discipleship and evangelism. Our next forum is on Thursday, October 21, at 6:00 p.m. and will feature a live, virtual interview with Rebecca McLaughlin, author of Confronting Christianity: 12 Hard Questions for the World's Largest Religion. Through this discussion, we aim to prepare women to communicate and demonstrate gospel-centered love to people wrestling with issues relating to identity, gender, and sexuality. There is some suggested prep work, but please come, even if you aren’t able to complete the pre-event reading. Due to the sensitive topics that will be covered, this forum will not be recorded. Visit 2pc.org/women to learn more and register.
