CONFERENCE The North American Congress of Clinical Toxicology (NACCT) is the largest clinical toxicology meeting in the world. This event provides ongoing education in clinical toxicology for more than 700 of the world’s leading clinicians, scientists, poison center staff, and executives. Attendees include clinicians and research scientists from poison centers, industry, academia, and regulatory agencies.

ACMT Virtual Pre-Symposium: Critical Measures: Intensive Care ToxicologyOctober 13, 2021

AACT Pre-symposium: Drop Dead Gorgeous October 14, 2021

Session organized by:Andrea Carlson, MD • Christina Hantsch, MDThis one-day virtual ACMT symposium will be a presentation of the intersection of clinical toxicology practice and intensive patient care issues, encompassing the management of both pediatric and adult patients. The symposium’s experts will draw from the fields of toxicology, addiction medicine, adult and pediatric critical care, cardiology, nephrology, neurology, and more! Sessions to include plenary presentations, engaging panel discussions, and lively debates. Listen to internationally recognized multidisciplinary experts as they weigh in on critical measures, including: ● Technological advances in the care of critically ill patients, including ventilation strategies, non medication cardiovascular support options, and renal replacement therapies.● Impact of the pandemic on pediatric substance use and overdose.● Critical illness caused or complicated by addiction and dependence.● The reality of workarounds for pharmaceutical shortages.● Pharmacogenomic considerations on patient management in the ICU.● Novel therapeutic strategies for toxicologic intervention.● Sizing up the critical role of the toxicology specialist in patient care management.

Session organized by:Jillian Theobald, MD, PhD • Rana Biary, MDWe live in a world of Instagram and social media. To fit into what society deems to be beautiful, people go to great lengths to defy aging and modify their bodies. This symposium will highlight some of the methods people take to get those “likes”. The symposium will cover “do-it-yourself” medicine, crash restrictive diets, specialty procedures, and toxic make-up. It will also include unusual methods for mental, psychological or physical enhancements. So join us, watch and learn, and then make sure to give the symposium a “like”.

Planned speakers include:Susanna Byram, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Loyola University Medical Center

Brenna Farmer, MD, MBA, MS, FACMT, Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine, Weill Cornell Medicine

Joshua King, MD, FACMT, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, University of Maryland

Judith Wolfe Laney, PhD, Chief, Chemical Medical Countermeasures, Division of CBRN Countermeasures, Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, Department of Health and Human Services

Lewis Nelson, MD, FACMT, Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, Newark, NJ

Laura Tormoehlen, MD, FACMT, Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology, Indiana University School of Medicine

Stephanie Weiss, MD, PhD, Addiction Medicine Research Fellow, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center

Tim Wiegand, MD, FACMT, Director of Addiction/Toxicology, University of Rochester Medical Center

After participating in this program, learners will be able to:1. Effectively employ technological devices in the management of poisoned patients.2. Discuss complex pain, sedation, and withdrawal management.3. Utilize new, repurposed, and tailored pharmaceutical interventions.4. Understand the advantage of involving the toxicology specialist in clinical care.

After participating in this program, learners will be able to:● Discuss the toxicologic consequences of crash restrictive diets.● Be aware of the complications of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical weight loss agents.● Discuss the toxicities associated with liposuction.● Understand the process of FDA testing and approval for cosmetic products.● Review different toxicities associated with make-up and other cosmetic products.● Understand the risks associated with detoxes and cleanses.● Discuss the toxicity of essential oils and injectables.● Review the risks of enemas.● Review abortifacients and their toxicity.

Improving Accessibility forHealth Literate Digital ContentSaturday, October 16, 10:00am-11:00am

From social media and websites to virtualpresentations and videos, digital and onlinecontent is both a necessity and a likely reality forreaching our audiences with important poisonprevention messages.

Expanding on the 2020 NACCT session addressinghealthy literacy, this session will focus on theapplication of health literacy principles in digitaloutreach and education.

Millions of people in the US live with a substance usedisorder (SUD). Healthcare providers have effectivetools to treat SUD, including medication-assistedtreatment (MAT), but they are not utilized widelyenough, in part due to stigma.

Session attendees will analyze the social consequencesrelated to the stigmatization of substance use, andwhat poison centers can do to help reduce the burden. This session will be led by frontline non-profit leaders.

Poisons in Pop Culture!

This year the PEC brings back a popular session that requires your poisonknowledge to answer questions about poisons of the past and recent popularculture. If you know all about cultural fascinations with poisons or want to knowmore, this session is for you. Come test your poison knowledge!

Debunking misinformationSaturday, October 16, 10:00am-11:00am

Misinformation, both perpetuated by those in bad faithor those who missed opportunities in times of crises, can have harmful effects on individual and publichealth. This session will be virtually led by the JohnsHopkins Center for Health Security, where they willoutline their priorities for a national strategy to combatonline misinformation, including their lessons learnedfrom Ebola and COVID-19.

The session will also instruct on best practices forcommunicating about science, with the special aim ofelevating poison control centers as a trusted source ofmedical information.
