Darlene Hyde was the Executive Director of the Commercial Real Estate Development Association of Metro Vancouver and the Executive Vice President for the New Car Dealers Association of BC. She is currently on the board of the Insurance Council of BC, and is past chair of the Customer Compensation Committee of the Motor Vehicle Sales Authority and the Board of Westminster Savings Credit Union.

George Greenwood joined the Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board as Chief Executive Officer in September 2019. With an MBA from Dalhousie, a Bachelor of Technology in Management from BCIT and designations of both Chartered Professional Accountant and Certified Financial Planner, George brings a skill set that includes strategy, finance, operations and human resources.

Learn about the changes coming to the Professional Development Program on January 1, 2020 and how these changes provide new opportunities for REALTORS® and managing brokers. Corinne and Jennifer focus on the role managing brokers can play in providing self-directed learning opportunities for REALTORS® in their brokerages.

Corinne Caldwell joined the Association in 2013 as the Chief Financial Officer. In her current role as COO, she is responsible for many of BCREA’s core services areas, including professional development, communications and standard forms, as well as administrative oversight.

Licensed since 1994, Jennifer Lynch is a managing broker on Gabriola Island, and past president of VIREB and BCREA. Jennifer was awarded an Honorary Membership with VIREB and received the 2018 Professional Excellence Award for her strong commitment to professional integrity, standards and management.

Participate in BCREA’s app-based pilot program designed to support REALTORS® with on-demand learning resources on timely issues. BCREA intends to leverage managing broker expertise to develop content for this mobile learning platform that will help integrate learning into day-to-day REALTOR® transactions.

Advocating on issues related to housing and real estate practice is a key part of BCREA’s mandate. Trevor provides an update on the latest developments on market housing affordability, the federal election and regulatory reform.

Trevor Hargreaves has more than 20 years of communications and government relations experience, with a background in federal and provincial issue management and strategic planning. He is also an Adjunct Professor at UBC’s Sauder School of Business, where he teaches strategic and business communications.

11:30 – 12:30 pm WHY MISTAKES HAPPEN . . . AND WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PREVENT THEM, Leslie Howatt, Executive Officer, & Oana Hyatt & Chris Johnston, staff lawyers, Real Estate Errors and Omissions Insurance Corporation (E&O)

A discussion with E&O’s CEO and staff lawyers on the types of claims reported to E&O, including current claim issues, why mistakes happen, and tips on what licensees, including managing brokers, can do to minimize the risk of claims.

Leslie Howatt has been the Executive Officer of the Real Estate Errors and Omissions Insurance Corporation (E&O) since 2011. Before that, she worked for over 20 years as insurance defence counsel both in private practice and as a staff lawyer at E&O. She also taught education courses, including Legal Update, to licensees from 2006 to 2011.

In response to what recently has been deemed a “nature emergency,” Jason describes the Nature Trust’s key work to ensure that natural spaces and biodiversity persist on the landscape today and into the future and how other organizations and the public can contribute.

Jason Emery has over two decades of experience as an Environmental Scientist, specializing in wildlife and ecosystem management and ecological restoration in Western Canada. Jason has worked with the Canadian Wildlife Service and spent over a decade consulting with large environmental firms.

1:25 – 1:55 pm UPDATE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF REAL ESTATE, Micheal Noseworthy, Superintendent, & Jonathan Vandall, Deputy Superintendent

Chris Johnston is a staff lawyer with E&O and has almost 20 years of experience representing clients in all levels of court. Chris represents licensees accused of professional negligence and brings a creative client-focused approach to helping licensees stay out of trouble and solve problems.

Oana Hyatt has been a staff lawyer with E&O since 2016 and has over 10 years’ experience in defending professional negligence actions. In addition to vigorously defending licensees, she is also one of the writers of Legally Speaking for BCREA.

The Office of the Superintendent of Real Estate is responsible for making the rules that govern licensee conduct and providing oversight of the Real Estate Council under the Real Estate Services Act, as well as reviewing disclosures made under the Real Estate Development Marketing Act. The office is also responsible for taking enforcement action against unlicensed activity and developer misconduct.

Micheal Noseworthy, Superintendent, and Jon Vandall, Deputy Superintendent, are with the Office of the Superintendent of Real Estate, which is an arms-length part of the BC Ministry of Finance, and is responsible for leading the regulation of the real estate industry in BC.

1:55 – 2:25 pm A CHANGING REGULATOR: THE ROAD AHEAD, Erin Seeley, CEO, Real Estate Council of BC

Erin Seeley leads RECBC’s overall operations to achieve strategic goals and priorities in accordance with its consumer protection mandate under the Real Estate Services Act. Before joining RECBC in October 2016, Erin spent more than ten years in leadership roles with the Government of British Columbia.

Erin Seeley provides a brief update on regulatory operations, including licensee and compliance trends, relicensing education programs, consumer disclosure forms and public communications initiatives, as well as key issues and opportunities for the future of real estate regulation.

2:25 – 3:40 pm HOW REALTORS® HELP FIGHT MONEY LAUNDERING, Henry Tso, Director, MNP

Many REALTORS® wonder why they’re subject to FINTRAC requirements. Using examples from his years of experience, Henry Tso will explain how money laundering can happen in real estate transactions and how REALTORS® fit into the big picture of anti-money laundering efforts. You’ll also learn about BCREA’s upcoming resources to support REALTORS®.

Henry Tso is a retired RCMP Superintendent and currently a Director in MNP’s Vancouver office where he’s a senior member of MNP’s Investigative & Forensic Services team in BC. With more than 25 years of experience, Henry focuses on the investigation of issues related to money laundering, fraud, corruption and conflict of interest.
