Recently a question was posed to thereturning ofcer or Wheatland County, Terry Tower. People were asking i they take their trailer and live on their armin Hussar or a couple o days, wouldthey be able to vote in that division.
“Because it’s a rural county, we havepeople that live in Strathmore, live inHussar, live in Gleichen and not on theland they arm,” said Tower. Becausepeople in the county live in divisionalresidency the rules say you have to livein the division you vote in.
“I I live in Strathmore and insist on
voting in the division, (I can’t). I should vote in Strathmore, not in this division,I’m making a alse statement and thepenalty o which can be a fne,” said Tower.
The fne would be not more than$10,000 or imprisonment o not morethan 6 months or possibly both.
“Obviously we don’t want that tohappen. We don’t want it to happen because o a misunderstanding, i youdo it willully then you would take your chances.” A person’s place o residence is clearly
defned by the place where they receivetheir mail and live out o and wherethey plan to return to. A voter can only have one place o residence.
“To me it would be an easy thing tomisunderstand, but by law you can’t doit,” said Tower. This has not been an issue in previous
years and they would like to make sureit stays that way
“We would also like to really stressthat even though itis trying times andharvests are late that people go out and vote,” said Tower.
“How long does it take to vote, fveminutes? Nobody is that ar away roma polling station cause we’ve got themairly strategically placed in the county and we’d just like to really encouragethe armers and the residents o thehamlets to exercise their right to vote.”

Making it easyCounting the ballots will be easier this year now that the town has implemented its new electronic voting
system. Advance voting was available October 12 and within two hours of opening the polls, there had
already been 70 early voters. Wayne Armitage, left, watches as David Coates, presiding deputy returning
ofcer, shows him just how easy it is to get all of the votes together this year. .Shannon LeClair Photo

Aordable housing always seems to be just out o the grasp or many ami-lies, and is a difcult task to achieve or
municipalities. Strathmore is taking aleap into what may be the frst viable
project, which allows people the op-portunity to purchase their own home when otherwise they may not be ableto.
On Oct. 6, Council approved a Memo-randum o Understanding between the Town o Strathmore and Classic Con-struction Ltd. Town Council and ad-ministration have been working on an Aordable Housing project with ClassicConstruction Ltd. since early 2009. Theengineering has been substantially com-pleted, and the preliminary site work isdue to begin within the next ew weeks.I all goes well, oundations will be inthe ground prior to winter reeze. The project is comprised o six eight-
plexes. Twenty-our o the units willhave two bedrooms and the remainder will have three bedrooms. One 2-bed-room eight-plex and one 3-bedroomeight-plex are to be constructed imme-diately, with the remainder ollowing inthe new year. This project is unique because the
units will be or sale rather than or rent. To enable those individuals and ami-lies earning at or near the Core NeedsIncome Threshold (CNIT), the Town will provide a second mortgage. Thissecond mortgage will carry no monthly payments and will only be repaid on re-sale, or i the unit is rented.
“We are not aware an aordable proj-ect with this type o ownership being
proposed in any other jurisdictions,”said Linda Nelson, Deputy Chie Admin-istrative Ofcer or the Town. The proj-ect is still in the pilot stage but council-lors and administration are excited by the project and are optimistic that it willsucceed. A portion o the money or the proj-
ect has come rom grants given through
the Municipal Block Funding Program.“With the town providing the second
mortgage, individuals and amilies earn-ing at or near the Core Needs Income Threshold will have an opportunity toown their own homes, as the provisiono the Equity Loan (second mortgage), will have the net eect o dramatically reducing the cost o the home, which will in turn enable households withlower incomes to qualiy or a mort-gage, oten or smaller payments thanrental costs,” said Nelson.
I a unit is sold, the repayment o thesecond mortgage remains with the unit, which provides opportunity or thesecond and subsequent purchasers thesame beneft, and in eect, the unit re-mains aordable in perpetuity, or or aslong as there is a demand or aordablehousing. For example, in the unlikely event the unit does not sell to an in-dividual who meets the CNIT within arequired amount o time, the unit wouldgo on the market to any prospectivepurchaser, with the second mortgage being paid back to the Town, whichcould be used toward another aord-able project.
“Optimistically, i this project is prov-en and successul, and there is more block unding available in the uture, we will have paved the way or uture ventures o this type. It could go a long way in alleviating this social issue thateverybody is acing,” said Nelson. The Town is very excited to see this
worthwhile project fnally coming toruition, particularly since the units will be oered or sale, rather than as rentalaccommodation to those who wouldnot have normally been able to owntheir own homes. This is a great oppor-tunity or a new beginning or amilieso all ages, circumstances, and lower in-come levels.

WHY???WHY won’t “Change for Strathmore” identify the candidates that
they are supporting, bearing in mind their platform is based largelyon “transparency”?WHY did “Change for Strathmore” persist in making numerous
requests for information (and which was provided at the cost of many thousands of taxpayers’ dollars) from the Town of Strathmorefor information which was publically available by doing personalresearch on the Town Web Site or by simply talking to current Town
Council Members ?WHY did the “Change for Strathmore” co-founder and mayoral
candidate not attend the “all candidates forum” (sponsored by theChamber of Commerce) on October 7th, 2010 or either of the “AllCandidates Open House” (at Days Inn) on either October 5th orOctober 7th?WHY did the “Change for Strathmore” utilize erroneous Mayor
and Councillor gures for their pamphlet distributed on October7th, 2010 (stating Mayor salary in 2007 was $12,270.36 when itwas actually $18,843.00 and that Councillors’ salaries in 2007 was$7249.92 when it was actually $11,335.20)?WHY did “Change for Strathmore” report (re: pamphlet, distributed
October 7th, 2010) that specic new council salary increases werecurrently being suggested when this matter has been delegated to acitizen’s group to review and provide recommendations?
WHY did the “Change for Strathmore” pamphlet, distributedOctober 7th, 2010, not include the fact that Town Council requestedan unbiased audit of all per diems claimed by the current Council (byboth a lawyer and an accounting rm) and that the audit concludedthat “based on my review of the per diem claims provided, allclaims could be argued to be eligible for payment under the currentpolicy”??? (note that policy was changed on October 6th, 2010).

Q: How does Caveat Emptor apply?
Caveat Emptor. Buyer Beware. When someone
buys a car, they can research the vehicle, read
reviews, as well as test-drive that car before they
purchase. Death does not allow for that ‘test it
out rst’ type of shopping. In fact, it is written
in legislation that the funeral industry is notpermitted to work by the philosophy of Caveat
Emptor. With one internet search, you can nd
articles speaking of the unscrupulous nature of
funeral directors. The reality of the situation is
that, like any industry, there are always some
immoral individuals. However, the vast
majority of funeral homes will do whatever is
possible to meet the needs of grieving families.
Funeral directors are required to explain
everything to a family, knowing that families
are often unfamiliar with the industry.
As such, Caveat Emptor does not and cannot
apply in the funeral industry.

Making it into the Guinness Book of World Records isn’t the easiest task, butone Strathmore woman managed to do
it. Melissa Crispin-Piche’s picture can be seen on Page 10 of the 2011 versionof the book. A few years ago someonehad broken the record for the mostdogs walked which she believes was 17dogs for 11 minutes.
“I said ‘pfft, I can totally do that’,”said Crispin-Piche.
She was already walking dogs aroundtown, and on an average day she was walking up to 12. She knew she could beat the previous record and so she setout for it.
“My goal was 25, and we had morethan that. We stared with 32 dogs andended with 27,” said Crispin-Piche. At rst she said it was a bit of a
mess, but it ended up turning into anawesome walk. She started at Kins-men Park, went up Main Street, along Wheatland Trail and down Brent Bou-levard.
“I think when I clocked it, it was a lit-tle over four kilometres that we walkedthat day with all the dogs and it tookme 43 minutes.” The actual process to make it into the
book was quite the undertaking and
took a little while. You have to email totell them your intentions, and then they send you the paperwork.
“You can’t just do it without havingall the paper work rst, there’s certainstipulations and regulations that youhave to follow,” said Crispin-Piche.
She had to have witnesses. One hadto be a vet or a doctor of some sort anda legal rep, and she needed dog ownerssignatures, dog names, video tape, pic-tures at a certain pixel, and two timers. They could have had someone fromGuinness come out, but they wouldhave had to pay for the ight, hotel, and other expenses so they decided todo it themselves.
Crispin-Piche has been collectingGuinness books since about 1988. Sheused to read through them as a kidand would nd the differences andmistakes and would write them. They
would write her back and so it has al- ways been something she is interestedin.
She was told they could never guar-antee that she would be in there be-cause they have so many people break-
ing and making records each year. They told her they always pick the most visu-ally appealing. She knew that the pic-tures were good and was just crossingher ngers that she would make it intothe book. When she got the plaque last year, she knew she had made it.
Crispin-Piche said without the sup-port of friends, family and the commu-nity she isn’t sure she would have beenable to do it. Her bucket list is now three quarters complete but she saidshe is done taking on record-breakingevents.
“No more records, I think I might be through with the records, having a young family. I think that’s more impor-
tant than records. I have one and that was all I ever really wanted so that waspretty great. Everyone will just have to wait and see what my next big adven-ture is going to be.”
Breaking a world record
Melissa Crispin-Piche knew she had broken a world record by walking the most dogs. Recently the 2011 Guinness Book of World Records came out,
highlighting her accomplishment on Page 10. Melissa and her daughter Luba weren’t looking to break any records when they took the dogs for a walk. The
dogs are all clients of Melissa’s and she can often be spotted taking the dogs for a leasurely stroll after lunch.

Disgusted. That is the rst word that comes to ChristieMeyers’ mind when she thinksof how the council meeting onOctober 6 went. Meyers had
been before Town council on July 21 to plead her case aboutmaking Centre St. a safer street. On June 6 a car had hit her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter and she decided something hadto be done. She was told in the
July 21 meeting Centre St. would be monitored for speeders for a
month, and then the issue would be brought back to council to bereviewed.
“50 (km/hr) is not a safe speedfor this road, so if somebody’sgoing 60 or 55 it does seem likeit’s way too fast with your lackof visibility and all the parkedcars,” said Meyers.
It took until the rst meetingof October to make it back intothe council chambers, due to anissue with the speed-monitoringmachine. Approximately 90 per cent of
the cars monitored were goingunder the posted 50km speedlimit. The most notable day wasOctober 2, when in 24 minutesseven people were speedingthrough the 800-metre stretch.
“The speeds aren’t incredibly high, but if you’re on that roadit’s very congested and tight, and I think we increased trafc
by lowering George Freeman to60,” said Councillor Bob Sobol.
“Driving down that road my-self, a comfortable speed is 40or less,” said Gary Abel, Senior Peace Ofcer.
Councillors Lois Wegener andSobol both want to see trafclowered and maybe see someof the people go back to using
George Freeman Trail.“I think putting stop signs on
Centre Street moves you back tothe collector road,” said Wegen-er. “I would support the motion
to throw a couple of stop signson and see what it does.”
Not all of the councillorsseemed to agree with the issuesregarding Centre St., and a few even stated they didn’t feel thestreet posed any risk to anyone.Sobol made a motion to seethree three-way stops placed onCentre St. Wegener and MikeLloyd were the only two in fa-
vour of the motion.“I can’t support this motion
because there are so many oth-er streets and pretty soon our
whole town would be three way stops,” said Councillor Brad
Walls. This didn’t stop the two de-
termined councillors. Wegener placed a secondary motion re-ducing it to two three-way stopson Centre St. Council decidedto ask they advice of the Se-nior Peace ofcer and the Chief
Administrative Ofcer, DwightStanford.
“Stop signs I believe would infact slow peopledown. Is it theultimate answer?
Well without try-ing. We don’tknow that but it isthe cheapest way to go in terms of trafc-calming so-lutions,” said Abel.
“I would sug-gest that we pickthe busiest spot, the most danger-ous spot and putthree way stopsigns there andsee what happens. See how it’s
working and consider the other two at that time,” said Stanford. Walls tried to make a friendly
amendment of a three monthtemporary trial period, and thata report be brought to council
at the end of the three months. Abel also suggested with theamendment that council lower the speed limit to 40.
“I do think lowering it to 40
would give us more enforce-ment options,” said Abel. Wegener didn’t like Walls’
amendment and denied it. Onceagain the motion was defeated
with the same three voting infavour.
“All we’re looking for is peo-ple to slow down on that roadand take an extra 15 seconds tomake it from one end to the oth-er, 15 seconds is all this is goingto take,” said Sobol.
He made a nal motion for one three-way stop at the CentreSt. and North Parkwood Cres-cent intersection.
“It’s obvious it’s going to keepgoing until there is a stop signthere,” said Mayor George Lat-tery. Part of the motion was toallow the signs to be up on atemporary basis and a report to
be brought back to council insix months. Walls voted in fa-
vour of the nal motion madeafter more debate ensued. Mey-ers and her family sat through
the discussion, slowly growingincreasingly dis-appointed andupset, as eachmotion was de-feated.
“You had four people on thatcouncil, threecouncil membersand the mayor, that listened to
what that Se-nior Peace Of-cer said, whichshould be what
should happen on my road, andthey totally disregarded every-thing that was said,” said Mey-ers.
Meyers said while it is a start,it’s not good enough yet. Sheplans to address the new coun-
cil and see what can be done. While she hadn’t been expect-ing to get three three-way stops, she had been hoping for at leasttwo.

Several events have beenplanned by the Chamber of
Commerce as a part of celebrat-ing Small Business Week, whichruns from the 17 to the 23. From2005 to 2009 the number of self-employed people in Albertaincreased by 69.5 per cent, ex-cluding Calgary and Edmonton,
which represents 18 per cent of Alberta’s total workforce.
“Small Business Week is animportant opportunity to focusattention on the courage, creativ-ity and entrepreneurial spirit of small business owners,” said Lin
Walker, President of the Strath-more and District Chamber of
Commerce. The statistics re-leased were compiled by AlbertaFinance and Enterprise. To helpcelebrate the week, there have
been a variety of initiatives initi-
ated to promote the town’s busi-nesses. The Shop Local initiativeis fully launching in coordination
with the week, and on the 21there will be a Business AwardsEvening. There are three different cat-
egories for Business of the Year:small business, medium, andlarge companies. There will also
be Community Spirit Award tocommemorate the business or organization that demonstratesexcellence in enthusiastic sup-port and promotion of the com-munity.
“Although the past severalmonths may have been a roughpatch for many entrepreneurs,”said Ron Cox, Manager of Com-munity Futures Wild Rose. “Our
fastest growing businesses con-tinue to be small businesses, pro-
viding necessary products andservices, creating jobs and sup-porting local economies. We’recommitted to helping small busi-nesses succeed.”
Small Business Week was of-cially launched nationwide by BDC in 1981. It began in 1979
when BDC branches in the Low-er Fraser Valley in British Co-lumbia organized small businessmanagement sessions duringone week, which later becameSmall Business Week.
“Historically, there have been younger mayors, prime ministers and
army generals appointed who were younger than my 30 years of age.
They all had one common factor, however, and that was to possess the
wisdom to trust and work with the team assembled around them.
That will be my goal in this term of ofce - to work with people and
accomplish the goals set before us”.

REMEMBER TO VOTE OCTOBER 18TH
I have a great passion or this communitywhich has been my home or the past 33
years. As a resident I have owned and
operated two successul businesses in town.
Having recently sold both these companies I
am fnancially secure, which places me in a
unique position that will allow me to ocus all
my energies on my duties as Town Mayor.
I have kept very busy since selling my
businesses; I have recently stepped aside as
the general manager o the Strathmore and
District Agricultural Society.
I elected I also intend to put aside my career
in real estate so that I may ocus exclusively
on the needs o all Strathmore residents.
A brie list o my community involvement
would include my having been on council
previously, in the early 80’s. (I have alwaysmaintained that the best two education
tools I received were through world travel
and being in politics). As well I have served
as Chairman o Strathmore’s Development
Appeal Board, been the President o Minor
Hockey and a member o the Strathmore
Agricultural Society o which I was President
and General Manager or a urther three
years.) I have been a member o the local
Kinsmen club and was their Sportsman o the
Year.
I am on the Board o Directors or the
Wild Flower Ranch Community SupportFoundation, and elected to the Board o
Directors or Tall Timber Leisure Park in
Sundre.
I have two wonderul children, both married,
and two amazing grandchildren!
I believe the ollowing highlight some o
the greatest challenges and issues our
community will ace in the near uture:
• Creating a balanced approach to economic
development and environmental issues in
order to make the best possible use o the
18 quarters o residential, industrial and
park space within our town.
• Continued improvement o our parks and
green space.
• A greater engagement with the community
by Mayor and Council in encouraging pubicinput and comment.
• Local business involvement,
encouragement and development.
• Encourage manuacturing and warehouse
development south o Highway #1 in order
to improve and stabilize our tax base.
• Improvement in the multi-use o our
community center making it more
accessible to all citizens.
• Increased support or housing and working
to saeguard the needs o our senior
citizens.
• Full publication o the Town’s budget onlineand in the local newspaper.
• Keeping taxes low through controlled
spending and sound management.
• Work with the department o Transportation
to explore solutions or a win-win solution
to the Bypass mandated by the ederal

Times Reporter
The Council remuneration and ex-pense policy went under the knieater it became apparent some issuesneeded to be clarifed. On Oct. 6, ad-ministration brought the policy beoreCouncil with recommendations or aew amendments.
In the spring o 2010, administrationreceived direction to research Councilremuneration policies in other mu-nicipalities and bring the results anda recommendation back to Council or review and consideration. This waspresented to Council on June 16. Therecommended policy amendments onOct. 6 included a clause where per diems could not be claimed or any
business conducted within the Town,or or an Council appointed commit-tees where travel out o town is re-quired, i.e. Bow River Basin, Calgary Regional Partnership, etc, however, mileage can be claimed. The amendments also contemplated
an increase to the base salary or May-or and Council.
“I have ought diligently to keepthese issues rom arising in our pe-riod in Council,” said Councillor BobSobol. He was happy to see a number o things in the amended policy, and
believes it eectively deals with per diems. Although Strathmore currently has one o the lowest paid Councils
o municipalities o our size, a major-ity o the councillors agreed that theincrease was too much.
“The mayors remuneration had beensuggested at $44,000, with council at$22,000, which was 50 per cent o theMayors recommended salary. At themeeting previous to the Oct. 6th meet-ing, I convinced council to reduce the
mayors (remuneration) to $36,000,thinking automatically the Council-
lors remuneration would go down to$18,000, which it didn’t,” said Council-lor John Rempel, ater the meeting.
“I certainly can’t agree with thislarge o an increase,” said Council-lor Mike Lloyd. At one point he had
wanted to increase it or the utureCouncil in hopes o attracting a ‘better’council to the seats, but elt the Oct. 6meeting was too late. He also wouldhave liked to see per diem amountssubtracted rom the remuneration or meetings that were missed.
“The act that we have many peoplelined up willing to do this job or whatit pays obviously speaks volumes,”said Lloyd.
Councillor Earl Best expressed con-cern, that the next Council will end upin the same situation as the provincialgovernment, where they had to givethemselves a signifcant raise. He eelsthat it would have been benefcial or the new Council to have the remuner-ation set prior to their terms in ofce,so they wouldn’t be aced with thesame issues.
Lloyd suggested a committee bestruck to determine what the remu-neration should be or the new coun-cil.
“I don’t see the huge gray areasin the previous policy. The policiesare only as good as the people whoare going to ollow them,” said Lloyd.
Previously, committee’s had been setup to research and make recommen-dations with regard to Council remu-neration, however, the CAO has haddifculty fnding enough people to siton the committee. It was also deter-mined that there should also be resi-dents on the committee, not just busi-ness owners.
A majority o Council elt that it would be more appropriate or the
new Council to determine the salary amounts. Sobol moved that Councilapprove the new policy in it’s entirety, apart rom the section reerring to the
base salary, and suggested that thenew council have the CAO select acommittee to determine salaries o themayor and councillors. The motion
was approved.
Past & current Council Remunera-tion is as ollows, (going back to 2003):
On November 5, 2003, Council ap-proved the ollowing amounts or Council Remuneration, eective No-
vember 1, 2004, by Motion # 589.11.03:Mayor $17,472.00 /yr Council $10,507.00 /yr
These amounts were subject to theannual cost o living increase paid toany Town employee.
On April 30, 2008, Council approvedthe ollowing amounts or Council Re-muneration, eective May 1, 2008, by Motion # 170.04.08:
Mayor $26,000.00 /yr Council $15,000.00 /yr On April 15, 2009, Council adopt-
ed Policy #1806, which is the Coun-cil Remuneration Policy, by Motion #173.04.09, with the ollowing amounts:
Mayor $26,780.04 /yr Council $15,450.00 /yr
These numbers are available to the
public and were provided by Townadministration. Clarifcation was need-
ed ater incorrect numbers were circu-lated in a yer through the town.

Healthy Hug™ TestThe ‘Healthy Hug™’ technique is a quick and simple way
to check your puppy’s condition and nd out if he needs less food,
more food, or you are feeding him just right.
• Start with your thumbs on the puppy’s backboneand your ngers pointing down.
•Feel along both sides of his ribs. If they protrude or are hard to
feel, you may need to adjust his feeding habits.
•Viewing from above, check for a dened waistline
just behind his rib cage.•From a side prole, check that his belly is slightly tucked up
behind his rib cage and not overly rounded.
•You don’t need to do this every day.

Parliamentary Report
Along with the reconvening of Parliament in Ot-tawa, my duties at the House of Commons have againchanged slightly. I have been named to the StandingCommittee on Public Safety and National Security and during the rst meeting I was elected to chairthe Committee.
I am looking forward to assuming my new respon-sibilities and hope to preside over a more harmoniousatmosphere at that committee, following its acrimo-nious hearings last Spring on Bill C-391, the privatemembers bill that would have begun dismantling thefailed and costly long gun registry. Many of you willknow that in the current minority government situa-tion, the block majority of opposition coalition votesare unstoppable at all Special and Standing Commit-tees. Again, I will try, as the new Chair, to facilitate amore harmonious approach to conducting hearingson the legislation that our Conservative governmentsends to my new committee for study. There are already several public safety and na-
tional security related Bills and a draft report on theagenda at the committee: The Report on CorrectionalFacilities: Mental Illness; C-23B Eliminating Pardonsfor Serious Crimes Act; C-5 Keeping Canadians Safe(International Transfer of Offenders) Act; C-17 Com-bating Terrorism Act; and, S-2 An Act Protecting Vic-tims From Sex Offenders. The pending legislative agenda of our Conserva-
tive government will also be adding more change tolaws that protect Canadians. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, our government sched-uled debate on: Bill C-22, protecting children from
online sexual exploitation; Bill C-21, standing up for victims of white-collar crime; Bill C-30, rules for drugand alcohol sample provisions by offenders and de-fendants; Bill C-39, ending early release for criminalsand increasing offender accountability; Bill S-6, seri-ous time for the most serious crime; and Bill S-9,tackling auto theft and property crime. The commit-tee certainly has our work cut out for us. The politicalantics of the Opposition parties to thwart these bills
commences even before they are sent to committeefor study. For example, last week the NDP moved aconcurrence motion on the oor of the House tryingto obstruct or delay the passage of Bill C-22, protect-ing children from online sexual exploitation, anotherkey part of our government’s tough on crime agenda.Be assured that their attempt strengthens our resolveto proceed.
Since 2006, my colleagues and I have worked hardto make the 39th and 40th minority Parliaments work. By the time you are reading this, we will al-ready be debating the second budget bill, C-47, theSustaining Canada’s Economic Recovery Act, intro-duced by the Finance Minister as the next key step inCanada’s Economic Action Plan to combat the globaleconomic recession.
Canadians have told us they want us to focus oncreating jobs, building growth and opportunity. They have told us that they want their government to havea robust legislative agenda, to get tough on crime, and that is exactly what we are delivering.

To the Editor Epcor and AltaLink have led an application to build
the controversial Heartland transmission line around thesouthern and eastern edges of Edmonton. The compa-
nies led their application with the Alberta Utilities Com-mission on Tuesday estimating that the transmission line will cost $580 million. This is the rst project proposedas a result of the passage of the controversial Bill-50, TheElectric Statues Amendment Act.
Bill-50 eliminated the regulatory process that deter-mined whether or not a transmission line was neededor warranted. Critics at the time claimed the elimina-tion of the regulatory process could lead to unnecessary projects and the doubling and tripling of electricity bills.Much of this was dismissed by the proponents of Bill-50.
The Heartland project application submitted on Tues-day is now projected to cost 93% more than the antici-pated $300 million previously claimed by the AlbertaGovernment. Critics claim the 93% increase, if it remainsuniversal and does not increase further, will raise theoverall proposals recommended by the Alberta ElectricSystem Operator over the next ten years to $32 billion
dollars. This is a 16,000% increase over the value of theexisting grid, which is currently estimated to be valuedat $2 billion dollars.
To put this in perspective, a 16,000% increase in Al-
berta’s road infrastructure would increase the average2-lane highway in Alberta to 32-lanes wide. Using thesame factor of 16, the QE#2 from Edmonton to Calgary would increase to 64 lanes wide. A 16,000% increase in
Alberta’s educational system would see the $31.4 mil-lion invested in students every school day rise to $502.4per day. A 16,000% increase in Alberta’s electricity gridis more than double the value of what Alberta budgetsannually for health care!
Critics warn that if transmission charges, generally found on page two or three of an electric bill, rise by 16,000% over the next ten years, the average householdin Alberta will see their electricity bills triple, and many small businesses (commercial business pay a much high-er rate) will see their electricity bills rise by a factor of 5 times. The impact of such a whopping increase couldin effect extinguish many small businesses, devastatelocal communities, and put into jeopardy many jobs in Alberta.
The solution is to roll back the clock on Bill-50 andrepeal it. Evaluate each and every proposal to build atransmission line on the basis that it is needed and re-
quired by the public now, and in the future. After all thepublic is paying for it! Joe Anglin

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
To the Editor Recently the Change or Strathmore Party distributed a pamphlet
that has given fgures on the remuneration received by the Town’sMayor and Council. Unortunately the numbers they have used or their comparisons are erroneously misleading. The fgures givenor the year 2007 are incorrect and the percentages are well wideo the mark. This group has quoted the ollowing:
2007 2010 % increaseMayor salary: $12,270 $26,780 118.25%Should be $18,643 $26,780 43.65%
Council salary $7,250 $15,450 113.10%Should be $11,331 $15,450 36.35%
These numbers still may seem high, they do to me, until you com-pare them with other surrounding towns our size in 2007:
Town: Airdrie Okotoks High River Average % Higher Mayor $45,786 $43,484 $37,579 $42,283 227%Councilor $21,475 $25,603 $16,256 $21,111 186%
In the pamphlet rom the Change or Strathmore party they again are misleading when they quote new remuneration numbersor the council-in-elect’s salary due to the act the current councildelegated the matter to a citizen’s group to review and make rec-ommendations. This group is to be appointed by the new Towncouncil.
Finally, regarding the matter o Per Diems. The present councilasked that Gregory Harriman & Associates (the Town accountants)
and Mr. Hugh Ham (the Town Solicitor) audit the Per Diem claims. Their audit concluded, “based on my review o the per diem claimsprovided, all claims could be argued to be eligible under the cur-rent policy”.
From the past three years this party have come up with three per diems o mine which they have questioned. I honestly believe allo the per diems I have submitted in my six years on council arelegitimate claims. Those I wasn’t sure on, I asked about beore they
were submitted. I the Town residents as a whole believe thesethree claims are erroneous I will oer to reimburse the Town.

To the Editor I am so disappointed in the articles in the past editorials with citi-

On October 7, 2010 (late evening) the Change or StrathmoreGroup was advised by one council member and the Town CAO thatthe fgures we provided or the salary or mayor and councillor in2007 in our yer may not be accurate. We wish to inorm the public, we based these 2007 totals on inormation provided to us by town ad-ministration on Sept 27, 2010. It now appears there was some overallconusion between the Change group and the Town administration
on the base salary issue thereore we wish to emphasize that the sec-tion with the heading “What a dierence 3 years makes” is not accu-rate and should not be considered actual. The Change or Strathmoregroup wishes to emphasize the eight example in our yer do notrepresent all o the concerns we ound in our review o per diems.

Getting you the right information
To the Editor I live on Centre Street and as a group we have tried to take action
to have something done with either the speed or stop signs on our street. I know everyone in town has a complaint about their street but our street is combined with multi amily housing or a goodportion o the street, with that comes a lot more trafc as well weare a main artery to our large department stores. We have noticedan increase in trafc since the speed limit was lowered on George
Freeman trail. But this is not the only problem we are acing here oncentre street - seven people - yes, I said seven people, have been hiton Centre St between 1999 and 2008. There have been 41 property/ vehicle accidents reported in that same time rame, this is the currentstatistics rom Alberta Transportation. It was brought to the attentiono our current council back in the summer, at the time our Mayor disagreed there was a problem with Centre St as he travels it many times a day and eels that 50 km/h was a sae speed. Three other councilors disagreed with the Mayor - it was only then we receivesome sort o acknowledgement o our concerns. They agreed to haveour local Peace Ofcers do a study on our street and review thefndings. Well last council meeting we heard rom the Senior PeaceOfcers and his recommendations. He agreed Centre St. is a con-densed populated street and that the speed o 50 is too high as wellthere should be a minimum o 2-3 way stop signs placed on Centre.Councilor Bob Sobol agreed with the fndings having been a PoliceOfcer with trafc control or 30 years, he sees the problems we arehaving but had to deend his decision to other council members. Lois
Wegener as always agreed it is a busy street and needs somethingdone about it and willing to try to fnd a solution or the problemnot dismiss it like the others have. Brad Walls suggested solution wasthat i we put three way stop signs on Centre Street, then we mightas well put them everywhere else in town - on Thomas Dr, on BrentBlvd, but does he not recognize these are not densely populatedareas with limited parking, each o those streets have a green spaceon one side o them or large parking lots to accommodate the cars. I
was truly disappointed that the council could not get past their opin-ions and listen to the expert in the feld that being the Senior PeaceOfcer yet council still out voted his recommendations and did asthey please. We did get one stop sign on Centre and Parklane or asix-month trial period, the Senior Peace Ofcer disagreed with their decision and advised that could be more o a problem as people willnow try to make up the speed they lost or making the stop. With atleast 2–3 way stops they have no time to make up speed. I thank theSenior Peace Ofcer or his knowledge o the situation but wish thecouncilors would get o their high horse and listen to the experts.
I highly recommend you take the time to check out this meetingonline beore the election, this way see or yoursel who the ol-lowers are, who the leaders are. Who ask the simplest redundantquestions and who calls a spade a spade. It is all in this past weeksmeeting. Town o Strathmore website. It sure opened my eyes andknow who I will NOT vote or this election.

Graduating Strathmore HighSchool, SHS, students were
presented with $100,600 inscholarships this year alone. The Rutherford Scholarship isa prestigious award, which rec-ognizes academic excellence inhigh school students. Studentsare encouraged to keep an 80per cent average in their cours-es for Grades 10, 11 and 12 toreceive the full amount of thescholarship.
“We always encourage thekids to do well in all of their courses, including their op-tions, because those marks can be calculated into the average which determines whether they get the scholarship or not,” said
Karen Harris, a teacher at SHS.It’s based on all three years,
which a lot of them aren’t. If a student does poorly the rsttwo years and well the last, they would get the Grade 12 mon-ey, or vice versa. Not all of themoney awarded out this year was necessarily for students who graduated this year.
“The money is held in perpe-tuity, so they can go back whenthey are 40 if they want. They just have to phone the Heri-tage Scholarship Fund peopleand say ‘ok, I’m going to schoolnow’ and then that money isprovided to them,” said Harris. The former student must be
going to post-secondary school. Then they must apply for the
scholarship, and then there iscommunication between the Alberta government, the Heri-tage Scholarship Fund andthe post-secondary institution. They make sure the student isregistered there, and if they arethey receive a check for the fullamount, which is sent directly to them.
“We’re very excited that our students have done so well andthen also that they’re accessingthese funds to go to university or post-secondary institutions with,” said Harris.
The teachers at SHS meet with everyone of the studentsin their Grade 12 year and gothrough eligibility, calculatingtheir averages. If the studentappears to be eligible the teach-ers are given application forms,
which they provide to the eli-gible students.
“Some schools just list it asanother scholarship and they don’t provide the informationfor the kids. We feel it’s neces-sary that the kids know aboutthis one because it’s a way of recognizing their academic ex-cellence throughout the yearsso we make sure that every eli-gible student gets the applica-tion form,” said Harris.
Each eligible student needsan 80 per cent in English andtwo more academic subjects. They can take two other classes, be they options or core coursesdepending on what the marksare like, and then average themin as well.

The students and families of Carse-land School continued their commit-ment to community service duringthe month of September. The annualTerry Fox Run was held on the after-noon of Sept. 29th. This small school
with a big heart walked, jogged, and ran to raise $1500 for cancer research. Many parents were out to countkilometres as well as participate in the walk. Way to go, Carseland School. On Saturday, Sept. 25th a small butenthusiastic group of students from grades ve and six came out early to clean a part of highway 24 in the an-nual highway clean up. The students, along with an adult supervisor, cleaned one to two kilometres of highway.Once all sections of the highway were clean the students enjoyed hot chocolate and doughnuts back at the
school. Carseland School sends a big thank-you to all students, parents, and teachers for their participationand commitment to our great community.

Every year different schools through-out the town host international studentsto spend a few weeks, months, or a year with them. Holy Cross Collegiate,HCC, recently had three of their interna-tional students head home after spend-ing a month studying with them. IreneMigueles and Sergio Martin Martinez both came from Spain and Carlos TeranRivero was from Venezuela. The three became friends at HCC,
banding together as people do whenthey are new to a situation.
Migueles came here with an exchangeprogram.
“I wanted to come to Canada for 2
years maybe more, I was very happy when I know I could come and now I’mreally having a great time and I hope Ican come back,” said Migueles.
In Spain there are many programs togo abroad to learn English. She camehere with a scholarship of the govern-ment. She can’t come again with thesame program and scholarship but shecan come again with any other pro-gram. She said 72 students came fromher province in Spain, and some of her friends were here in Alberta in different villages.
Rivero came to Canada to visit his fam-ily and practice his English. Unlike Mar-tinez and Migueles, he spent two monthshere.
“I just came here to experience theschool system here plus I’m just visitingmy cousin. My aunt asked if I could starthere and have the experience to learn
English,” said Rivero.
When he came here, he said he want-ed to have a good experience. He talkedto the Spartans football coach to see if he could try it out. The coach gave hima chance be a part of the team while he was here.
“I can see the difference of the coun-tries. When I come here you say hi, in Venezuela we say hi with a hug andkiss,” said Rivero. When he made his rst friend he said
hi like he would at home and got ashocked reaction. When he questioned what he had done, his cousin explained why it had happened.
The biggest thing Rivero noticed wasthe security one feels in Canada.
“In Canada it is so secure, walk in the
streets. We now in Venezuela have prob-lems with our president and all of thatand it is not secure. So it is like here itis very beautiful, it’s very secure all thehouse are open and it’s very different,”said Rivero.
Martinez had heard Canada was beau-tiful and couldn’t wait to y over.
“I wanted to improve my English andits like well I never been studying inother country and I want to improve my English so where can I go and it was likeoh yeah Canada,” said Martinez.
Martinez agreed with many of thethings his fellow students had to say about Canada and the town, but foundthere is not a lot to do in the town, sincea car is needed to go anywhere.
“I enjoy it a lot, you have a lot of funand you meet a lot of people and itslike yeah, it’s really cool,” said Martinez.Students with the best marks from his
school had the chance to apply to come
to Canada and he was one of the lucky ones chosen.“The culture, like the food you eat, and
then Canada has been a country withpeople from every where in the worldand Spain is like south American peopleand north of Africa. Its like here there isa lot of diverse, people from every year, its really nice because you are moreopen to the people,” said Martinez. Hesaid if you go to Spain people wouldn’treally talk at rst because you are differ-ent and new.
“It was incredible because they intro-duced themselves to us and was really nice.” The food has been one of the biggest
changes for him to adjust to. In Spain
they eat a lot of sh, fruits, vegetables, and salads, and here we don’t eat a lotof fruits of vegetables.
“I knew that it was more or like ev-erything hamburgers, fast food, in Spain we have more like healthy food, moreMediterranean food.”
Like Rivero, Martinez also joined asports team while at HCC. He choseto join the volleyball and cross-country teams, though. One thing he didn’t getto do was practice cooking Canadianfood, which was something he had beenlooking forward to. The option wasn’tgiven to him at the school but he did buy some cookbooks and plans to per-sue it at home. All three of the students said the edu-
cation system here is about two years be-hind their countries. All of them agreedthe country is beautiful and they all planto come back the rst chance they get.

Step-Up Performance began operating the Endless Ice machine in June. The machine is basically a
treadmill, which has a rolling endless sheet of ‘ice.’
The basic intent is to improve stride development while working cardio and conditioning.
“This is like a power skating tool. It just makes them stronger skaters because they have to balance
with that force against them,” said Tristan Desmet from Step-Up Performance.
She compared it to throwing a kid in the river and having them swim against the current and thenthrowing them into a pool. Because of ghting to keep steady and balanced against the current,
being in a pool would then be easy.
Everyone who begins on the treadmill goes through 10 different phases to start. Once they have
gone through all of those phases, and everyone is different, then more specic areas can be
targeted. They include, but are not l imited to stick handling, backwards skating, shooting, passing,
basically anything they want to work on.
“It’s really a tool just to improve their skating as well as all aspects of the game,” said Desmet.
Once a person becomes a better skater it is easier to work on all of the different abilities they
may want to enhance. With hockey season starting up, many kids from minor hockey and gure
skating have been taking advantage of the treadmill. Strathmore High School has also added
using the machine into one of the programs offered which Desmet says adds substance to
the high school program.
“The kids that are coming in, we see a lot of improvement with them and so that’s
kind of exciting when you’re able to see that within the short time that they have been
coming in,” said Desmet. The treadmill isn’t only available to kids in hockey, it is open for everyone who
is interested to head down and practice on. Its a great tool, it works your core,
it works your legs, it works your upper body it’s an awesome workout said
Desmet.
“That’s always an option for people, it doesn’t have to be just for kids or for
athletes who are trying to make it to the next level. It denitely is a tool to enable
those players who are looking for that, but it doesn’t have to end at that.”
Anyone young or old who is interested in skating or learning how to skate can
sign up. There is always a staff member helping people through the different
steps. People are harnessed in to ensure the safe operation of the machine.
Many people may not like ice-skating but love to rollerblade. While they can’t
bring their rollerblades on the machine they can still strap on a pair of skates
and get a similar workout, keeping those muscles toned and t.

It took nearly our weeks o evalua-tion or the coaching sta o the UFA Bisons to select their roster or the
2010-2011 season. Twenty o the fnest hockey play-
ers rom the zone, which spans over alarge area outside the City o Calgary, made the highly respected triple-A midget team.
However, or the our local playersmaking the team, the eeling was alittle sweeter.
Goaltender George Merik, deence-men Darian Henry and Cody Brown, along with orward Kirby Ruzesky, have the honour o playing in their childhood rink or the upcoming sea-son.
For three o the our players, they’vehad the privilege o donning the Bi-
sons jersey last season, while new-comer Henry put on the Bisons silksor the frst time this all.
“You know, it was really great,” saidHenry o the frst time he stepped onthe ice or the Herd. “It was a little
nerve-wracking at frst, but it’s gettinga little easier now. I came and watchedmy older brother’s games a lot – heplayed or this team at one time too,so I was always there.
“It was always cool to watch andimagine what it would be like to play (here) as a young kid.” As one o the team’s oensive cat-
alysts, Ruzesky is excited to ply histrade or the Bisons.
“It’s a pretty good eeling to come back and to be able to play a second year with the organization,” said thehard-hitting power orward. “It eelspretty special – seeing some o theguys who moved on to junior, the NHL
even – to ollow in their ootsteps isspecial.”
“I remember watching that onegame that went to seven overtimesor something like that and wishing Icould be there one day. Now that I am,
I have to take it all in and have un with it.”
One o the rare players who tookadvantage o all three years o midg-et eligibility is goaltender Merik. TheRockyord native is now is his thirdand fnal season with the Bisons.
“It’s a great organization – greatcoaches, great managers – they takecare o us,” said Merik. “Since I was young, I always dreamed about play-ing here. It’s weird – looking at i t then because the players seemed so big.Now you’re one o them.” According to the netminder, there is
tremendous pride when donning theBisons jersey.
“You can ask any o the (players),I’m not a big ooling-around guy – es-pecially come game time,” said Merik.“The pride (o putting the jersey on)is so high because you represent your hometown, you represent the crest
(on the jersey) – it’s great.” Teammate Cody Brown agrees.
However, his jersey is a little heavi-er than the others, as he was namedteam captain prior to the start o theregular season.
“It’s a real privilege – when you play minor hockey you always look up tothe guys,” said Brown. “It eels really good (to be a player), let alone thecaptain. It’s kind o surreal. I never thought that’s how it would go.
“It was a huge honour (to be namedcaptain) – playing here last year I gotsome experience. We have a great bunch o guys and that makes my jobeasier, that’s or sure.”

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
Many of the candidates in theelection have brought up takingcare of our seniors as an issue
which needs to be addressed. Yet one woman, Debbie Wake-lam, said she is hosting a work-shop about the Eden Alternativeat the Civic Centre on Oct. 25and there has been little re-sponse from Strathmore.
“I have no response fromStrathmore. I have people fromoutside of the community, fromoutside of the county, but no onefrom Strathmore,” said Wakelam. The Eden Alternative follows
10 principles. The main focus isto identify and correct the threeplagues which affect most se-niors in care homes. The threeplagues are loneliness, helpless-ness and boredom. Wakelam has
already initiated this in Mead-owlark Seniors Care Home, her alternative solution for senior care. Wakelam currently has three
ladies living with her, and sheimplemented the changes in her own caregiving a few monthsago. The changes have made thehouse feel more like a home for the ladies and less like a carecentre. Many seniors end up ininstitutionalized care with 100other people where they follow a day-to-day routine. Wakelamstill has daily things she wouldlike to see done but the main fo-cus of the Eden Alternative is to
involve the seniors in decision-making and other things.
“I don’t know how you get itacross to people that things can
be different and the attitude of how we treat our seniors is so
wrong,” said Wakelam. In some facilities things are
taken away from them, thingsthey used to do and can still do
but are just not allowed to doin some assisted living facilities.Currently Meadowlark is locatedin Strathmore but Wakelam has
been toying with the idea of buying an acreage in the county. She said her dream is to have apurpose built home which willhouse 10 residents.
On the 25, Cheryl George, who shares responsibility of Eden Alternative Regional Co-ordinator for Western Canada,
will be speaking to interestedparties about how to implement
the Eden Alternative.Originally it was a $125 fee to
attend the workshop, but Wake-lam has since nixed the fee andit is now free for anyone whois interested in learning more.People are coming from all over
but Wakelam is disappointed by the lack of response from Strath-more and area residents.
“We need something hereto keep the seniors here,” said
Wakelam. Edenizing a care facil-ity doesn’t cost any money; it isall a matter of living by a differ-ent philosophy.
“If people here would em- brace it, like how nice to be
known as a town that caresabout its seniors, or a county,”said Wakelam.
“It could have a huge impact, and it can be very positive for the town to say we’re adaptingthis philosophy for our seniorshere.”
She said if people, especially our elected ofcials and mem-
bers of health services, wouldcome Cheryl George would beable to answer almost any ques-tions which might arise. Georgehas worked at the SherbrookeCommunity Centre in Saskatch-ewan for over 20 years and isknown for being passionateabout promoting quality of lifein long-term care. Wakelam has been told she
should move her business toSaskatchewan where she couldalready be set up, but shedoesn’t want to. She is from
here and she wants to see it ini-tiated here.
“I’ve never been sold onsomething so much in my life, that could make such a hugedifference for so many people,”said Wakelam. The workshop begins at 9
a.m. on the 25 and goes until4 p.m. There will be lunch pro-
vided and there will be plenty of time for questions. Everyoneneeds to register ahead of timeso that Wakelam knows how many people to plan for. Reg-istration ends on Oct. 15. Call403-934-5294, to reserve a spaceat the workshop.

An “X” should be marked by my name be-
cause I am concerned about the increasing
debt our town has been incurring. Since 1999
I have been working as a Real Estate agent.
I have watched developers come into town
and leave with a lot more money in their pock-
ets than they left behind. What they have left
behind are unnished communities in which
you, the citizens of Strathmore have had to
pay. Your taxes have increased and will in-
crease again because the town has been, in
affect, supplementing these developers.
In short, I believe that if the town worked
more effectively with the developers, we
would have the funds to develop our town
appropriately.
In regards to “my name,” I have sold a lot of
homes in Strathmore over the past 11 years. I
have been asked many questions by potential
homebuyers. Questions about our schools,
health care, recreational facilities (private and
public), safety, lot sizes, businesses, by-laws,
off-leash pet areas, taxes and so much more.
I have answered these questions with hon-
esty and integrity. Many of these homebuyers
have posted their testimonials on my website
at www.kevinbaldwin.ca. These testimoni-
als are references to my character and “my
name”.
Mark an “X” by my name because I will
serve this town with integrity, helping the tax-
payers benet. The developers are receiving
the tax breaks and we as citizens of Strath-
more are all bearing this burden. I want to put
Strathmore’s citizens rst.

With the Oct. 18 elections just around thecorner, the Strathmore Times asked candi-dates from the Town of Strathmore, WheatlandCounty, Golden Hills School Division, Villageof Hussar and Village of Rockyford a simplequestion. Why should a voter mark X on
the ballot beside your name? Hereis what the various candidates had to say …
(Please note; some of the candidates did nothave the opportunity to submit their answersprior to press time, while one candidate de-clined to leave a comment.)
Meet the candidates
Town of Strathmore
MAYORAL
Kevin
Baldwin
I have attended almost every Strathmore
Council meeting in the past two years. I am
the only person seeking election that attended
council to prepare and learn about the key is-
sues. Throughout this campaign, I have been
actively engaging with Strathmore residents to
nd out how to best serve the people of this
great town.
As your mayor, I will work with the new
council to carefully manage our nances, work
to avoid across the board tax increases/ser-
vice reductions.
As your mayor, I will promote and support
our existing businesses. Your mayor and coun-
cil need to work together to create a partner-
ship that ensures local business’s become
stronger and more successful, providing jobs
that generate a living wage, a future and a rea-
son to stay and raise their families.
I will protect the wetlands and expand our
parks and pathways to create new opportu-
nities for camping and summer recreation.
These recreational and protected areas will be
the gem of our future and the gift we give our
children.I will work with our neighbours, the County
and WID to leverage our government partners
to improve the quality of life in Strathmore.
Some of the joint opportunities include sup-
porting affordable housing for seniors, prioritiz-
ing new recreational facilities and the support
of community/arts groups.
I will support the citizen’s desire to ght the
Highway realignment as proposed by the Pro-
vincial Government, to ensure only the best
option for Strathmore is approved.
I have over forty years of work experience
and training in accounting, nance, nan-
cial management, supervision/management,
sales, administration and conict resolution.
You should mark your X beside me be-
cause:
1) Availability; your mayor must be avail-
able and accessible during the day. I am re-
tired and my family has grown up, making
my evenings and weekends free.
2) I’m honest and open with no hidden
agendas ...I think honesty and openness is
a key character of oneself.
3) Transparent; I’m giving up my real-es-
tate license to avoid all conicts of interest
and I’m not doing this for the money.
4) I’m easy to talk to, yet I will stand up for
the rights of our citizens.
5) Age brings knowledge, experience and
trust ... with my life’s traveling and 40 years
in sales it has taught me how to deal with
diverse and complicated situations. Plus
I’ve gotten to know many people of various
walks of life ... ie politicians, developers,
investors, and good down to earth people
like yourselves. I’ve resided in this commu-
nity for 33 years and have served a term on
council in the early 1980’s.
6) Business skills: I owned and operatedtwo small businesses in Strathmore and re-
cently retired as manager of the Strathmore
Ag society that had an approximate budget
of two million dollars.
So in closing, why not vote for the mayor
that truly cares about this community and
has all the qualities you are looking for to
propel Strathmore forward in it’s future vi-
sion? I truly love this community and I will
be the one that will do the best for you!!!
Thanks to everyone for listening and reading
and see you on Oct 18th.
When contacted by the Strathmore Times,
Mr. Freeland declined the opportunity to leave
a comment.

As a lifetime citizen of the Strathmore area,
I am the man who is running because I see
the needs in the community from the per-
spective of a family man who loves the area
and is proud to be raising a family here.
As a younger candidate, I have the energy
and stamina to take what is deemed a part
time position and make it my full time dedica-
tion - the community deserves a Mayor who
always has his eye on the ball, looking for new
options, ideas and solutions to the every day
problems we face. I know that as Mayor I will
have a team of people around me who have
strengths where I do not and that as the team
that runs this town, we need to work togetherand use everyone’s strengths and abilities as
much as possible.
I am one of the citizens of Strathmore and
the community is the reason I am running for
Mayor - I want to remind the council daily, that
we have to look at problems and solutions not
just as a council but as tax payers who want
to see that their money is well spent.
I believe that my background as a busi-
ness professional will bring professionalism
to the council and ensure that we are running
the town as we would any business, with our
eye on the budget and our nger on the pulse
of the community knowing where the money
needs to go and when we need to say no, or
look at other opportunities and possibilities.
I care about your town, my town. Please
vote.

Over the past six years I have become that
person. I have learned the process and re-
alities of municipal government. I have lived
and breathed the issues and concerns of
the Strathmore public. I am motivated by astrong desire to be involved in nding equi-
table solutions and have an absolute pas-
sion and love for this town which I call home.
I have gained the respect and trust of
other municipalities and those whom I have

“I have known Earl Best since he was
elected to Strathmore Town Council six
years ago. His support, advice, insights and
his efforts will better serve your citizens. I
have always found Earl to be constructive

tributes a town councillor needs:
- A love of the community he or she lives

- A passion for doing what is best for that
community.
For as long as I have known him, I have
always been impressed with Earl’s drive and

As we start the nal week of this election
campaign in Strathmore, I would like to say
I’m honored and privileged to be in the same
company of candidates we have running for
mayor and council. I certainly wish them all
well.
You, the voters are going to have some
tough decisions to make on election day,
and I think that’s in this democratic process,
I’m sure the right mayor and six council-
ors will be picked, to help move and guide
Strathmore forward.
Having said all of the above, I, Rocky want
you, the voters, to seriously look at my name
on the ballot! Blokland, Rocky - X
I believe I am the councilor you’re look-
ing for.
I operate two businesses that are located
INSIDE the town of Strathmore!
I believe we need accountability, efcien-cy, honesty, transparency and respect at
council level.
I bring with me a no nonsense approach,
combined with my common sense and busi-
ness sense.
I know we can achieve all of the above
within the next town council.
I can promise you that I will speak, de-
bate, vote & work with council on your be-
half and do what is best for Strathmore.
With your vote, I will work hard to bring
new ideas and a new way of thinking to en-
sure we can all continue to be proud to call
Strathmore “home.”
Remember, vote Rocky on October 18.

This has been such a tremendous experi-
ence. Over the last few weeks I have had the
privilege to meet and speak with numerous
people who have shared their backgrounds
and concerns with me and offered kind
words of encouragement and feedback.
Thank you for allowing me that opportunity,
I really appreciate it!
As I have expressed, I believe anyone in
the position of councillor or any town of-cial must: genuinely demonstrate an ap-
preciation and respect for others; the desire
to serve others; a willingness to listen and
to learn; an understanding of the role and
its limitation; and an ability to challenge fel-
low council and administration for the best
interest of the community, standing up in a
crowd and speaking to be heard.
My focus is on the community, represent-
ing all residents. The heart of any commu-
nity or business is the PEOPLE. Whatever I
am able to contribute, I want it to have merit,
quality instead of quantity, as I live here too!
Any one person can make a difference, just
need to try.
Vote for the candidate(s) that you feel
would represent you and our community.

I have extensive business background,
owned and operated a number of business-
es, employed as business and marketing
consultant for two large Western Canadian
corporation, currently work in the computer
industry providing full range of solution to
private and public corporations.
I’m quite surprised with what are consid-
ered priorities in our community. The message is simple. Economic devel-
opment is our “Number One Priority”
We are living in an Economic landscape
that has no sizable commercial, industrial or
logistic based business and we have to rely
on the residents to carry the burden.
Our Town is a business and it requires
skilled marketing to promote it.
It also needs; increasing revenues, strict
operational guidelines, customer service
and “Real-Time” ow of information to you
the shareholders.
The hiring of an economic development
ofcer would only be one of the necessary
components for an Economic Recovery
strategy.
Incentives to entice Businesses to reloca-
tion may be needed to be considered, this
has proven to be successful in communities
such as Airdrie and Lacombe.
We do have the necessary services in-
frastructure, annexed land, large residential
development plan to the West, a good em-
ployment pool and are in close proximity to
the highway, no matter where it ends up.
Strategies:
Logistics and Distribution networks, Small
and Medium manufacturing
Foodservice and service based business-
es, franchising is expanding rapidly today.
Healthcare facilities, private expansion of
senior care facilities of all types.
Where will our children be able to work
within Strathmore!!!!!!!
Other issues part of “Support the Vision”
• Preservation of the existing highway
route through the Town of Strathmore.• “Strathmore as a Destination” establish
a Task Force.
• Public Safety and increase enforcement.
• Openness and accountability of Coun-
cil, information ow and Review Taxes.
• Snow Removal.
• Community development planning has
to include affordable Senior housing.
• Calgary water pipeline has left a lot of
questions unanswered.
• Establish a recreation area at the site of
the water reservoir lake NW of town.
I believe that my solid business back-
ground, good common sense and the un-
derstanding of the need for an Economic Vi-
sion for Strathmore, this is more than a good
reason to vote for me.
Please support my bid for Councillor and
Vote October 18, 2010.

I would like to start off by thanking all of you
for your interest in our election and the won-
derful support I have received. It would be an
honour for me to represent the residents of
Strathmore on our next Town Council.
As a resident, teacher, and coach in this
community over the last 27 years, I feel I have
displayed many of the qualities that a Town
Councillor should possess. I have treated
people with respect, empathy, genuine con-
cern, and courtesy. I listen to both sides
of issues and am not afraid to stand up for
what I believe is right. I have strong organiza-
tional skills and the knowledge of how meet-
ings should be run - how councillors need
to treat each other with respect and follow
proper procedures. I know the importance
of maintaining open communication among
the council itself, the residents of Strathmore,
and the various organizations involved in the
decision-making processes.
Throughout my campaign, I have shown
that I will do the research and seek out an-
swers and information to the problems andsituations Strathmore faces. I am excited
about Strathmore’s future and have lots of
ideas to share. There are many additional
committees that a councillor could join, and
I look forward to getting involved. My enthu-
siasm and interest in providing recreational
opportunities for our youth and families, en-
suring a safe community, taking care of our
seniors, and revitalizing Downtown while
supporting local businesses will continue.
If elected, I will br ing honesty, integrity, and
respect for the citizens of Strathmore to my
role as councillor. I will continue to be ap-
proachable and I will work hard to accom-
plish our goals. I will be visible in our commu-
nity and will act as a voice for your thoughts
and concerns.

It would be easy for me to sit here at my
desk and tell you, the voter, what a great
guy I am; how honest I am, that I care about
you, your concerns, about our town, and
that I want to listen to your ideas and sug-
gestions on how we can move our town into
the future. How I will take your questions
and concerns to council and voice them on
your behalf, and that as a resident and small
business owner here in Strathmore; I share
many of the same concerns, questions, and
sometimes frustrations when trying to get
understandable answers. But saying it just
isn’t enough. I hope the residents of Strath-
more will take what I write at face value and
give me the opportunity to put my words
into action.
I’m not the type of person to just talk
about how good I am or complain about
what’s going on around us. I am a ‘doer’.
I seek answers to my questions and workhard to achieve my goals. In the short period
of time from nomination day to Election Day
I have, and will continue, to visit as many
homes in Strathmore as possible; to intro-
duce myself and hear any of your concerns,
questions, and ideas. Although I am using
every available minute on this quest, it’s un-
realistic to believe I can reach every home
in Strathmore. I apologize in advance to all
those residents I am unable to get to. How-
ever, I strongly believe in accessibility to our
elected ofcials and invite you to e-mail me
anytime at [email protected]
Please be assured, I will reply. If I do not
have the answer to your question, I will do
my best to nd it.

4 Reasons Why People Should Vote ForMe
I believe the Candidates should be able toDemonstrate Solid Leadership with a ClearVision or the Future o Strathmore. Theymust be Committed, and Accountable to theTaxpayer. I believe that I represent the Citi-zens o Strathmore with those qualities. Fur-thermore, I believe that my past perormanceon council is a testament to that.
Members o council have to make deci-sions that aect the Entire Community. Thedecision making process requires council toconsider all the Issues, and based on thatinormation, make a decision that is in the
best interest o the Taxpayers o Strathmore. In order to make those decisions you haveto be in tune with your community, which Ibelieve I am.
The priorities o the Community have to beconsidered in all budgetary discussions, and
dealt with in a timely manner. Presently weare budgeting or the replacement o our ag-ing inrastructure downtown and other areaso Town as needed. I am committed to ollow
through with that.Long range planning is so very important
in shaping the uture o any Community. Iand other members o Council have duringthe last 10-15 years had the oresight to laythe ramework by ensuring we have a goodsource o water, and plenty o it. Inrastruc-ture, and the new wastewater treatmentplant or our euent are also in place. Withthe annexation o additional lands, not onlyor Residential, but or Commercial and In-dustrial purposes, everything is in place orthe new Council to aggressively promoteStrathmore globally.
With your support I will help the new coun-cil reshape Strathmore and make it a Friend-ly and Attractive Community or tourists andtravelers to explore.

I would like to thank my ellow Citizens oStrathmore or their consideration through-out this Election process. I realize that it isdifcult to put your trust into someone else’shands that will directly aect you and youramily’s uture. I too as a voter have the di-lemma o which Candidates to choose. Ihave predicted rom the beginning it is veryobvious that the our incumbent CouncilorCandidates will retain their positions. Thatleaves only two positions or the nine re-maining Candidates to fll. Which Candidate
addresses the issues that you value the
most without sounding like all o the rest?Someone who is genuine and passionate
about Strathmore? A person that you wouldeel comortable with, sitting at your dinnertable either sharing a meal or discussing theissues? My platorm has been to the pointand will not waiver. I support a Sustain-able Residential Irrigation System. I supportcleaning out Kinsmen Lake. A vote or mesends a clear message to the rest o Councilthat you support a change in Administration.Congratulations to all o the Candidates onOct. 18, 2010 or supporting Strathmore tothe best o their abilities.
On a lighter note, I would like to proposea new bylaw that prohibits during electiontime the use o the words transparent andaccountable. I you use either word you arefned $1 and i you use both in the same sen-tence you are fned $5. The money raised willbuild another ice rink.

name of the person(s) who will serve the
people of Rockyford better than others on
the list. If that is Julie, “X” marks the spot.
On the other hand, if you do not know the
candidates, please do not spoil the process
by voting for a pretty face, a well-known
name or a slick campaign. Vote smart and
knowledgeable; vote for your community;
vote for Rockyford’s best.

Wheatland County
DIVISION 1
Economic development within the Wheat-
land County has been growing over the past
number of years. To stimulate this growth the
County has approved an area structure plan
on the south side of Highway #1, extending
west from Strathmore to the County bound-ary. This area structure plan is for heavy In-
dustrial businesses, to locate along this cor-
ridor all businesses that wish to relocate to
the county can phone the County ofce to
get all the information they need to make an
informed decision.
While farming and ranching have been the
backbone of the County, we also have oil and
gas companies drilling and laying pipelines
within our boundaries. Oil and gas upgrad-
ers and plants are up and running in most of
the County. We have major power generat-
ing plants in Division 1 and 2. Division 1 has
the rst Pattison Grain Rail Loading system
being built in all of North America; and its
grain elevator system can load 135 cars in
eight hours (very impressive.)
Also Division 1 has a plastics recycling
plant, where plastic product are made into
plastic pellets and then shipped out to make
other product. Also Division 3 has a fuel stor-
age area being built, this will be a bulk facility
for diesel fuel, gas and oil product. This will
take 130 tanker trucks off Highway # 1 per
month. All products will be shipped by CP
Rail. In Division 7 a wind farm has received
approval for placing large towers to produce
electricity. In fact construction has started on
the bases for the wind towers. In 2011 we
will see the towers and the turbines being in-stalled. The lists of project I have mentioned
are only part of the Economic Development
that has been accomplished by Wheatland
County. In the last three years we also have
had many new rural homes built all over the
County; in addition to existing homes many
of these homes have home based business-
es, and we denitely encourage this.
The work that needs to be done to bring
our County into the forefront is to embrace
the information highway. This would allow us
to attract new business to our County as it is
a necessity in today’s business world.

Why should you vote for me, that’s a good
question? I’ve always tried to make the right
choice when I vote. You listen to the speech-
es, hear the promises and if there’s some
history that you’re impressed with, then you
make your decision.
I have no history for you to go by. I’m not a
speechmaker and I can’t make any promises
but I will listen to the concerns, ideas and
present them with condence with the right
information.
I will be honest, forthright and will give
you the facts as presented to me. I will work
for you as a resident of this County and will
work for the betterment of the whole county
not just a select few.
I have a solid background in business and
marketing and I know rst hand that commu-
nication is a key ingredient in any organiza-
tion big or small. I will make communication
with you my top priority and to personally
meet as many people as I can in Division
One.
Please vote on October 18th, your vote
does make a difference.

Why should a voter mark X on the ballot
beside your name?
People should rst and foremost vote in
general. As to why to vote for me … I bring
a fresh positive attitude to council. Listening
is a key skill for the councilors of Rockyford
and I intend to do a lot of listening. I will give
honest and true answers to all questions
asked. When I am not sure I will work hard to
nd a solution or answer to all questions or
concerns brought to my attention.
When I set my mind to take on a project,
I like to see it completed correctly and ef-
ciently. Great organization is the key to hav-
ing success of any project. I will bring new
ideas and respect the limitations we may en-
counter but will push the boundaries when-
ever necessary.
I am within the demographic of familieslooking to nd a place to raise their families
so can offer what we look for in a village rst
hand. Rockyford needs to promote and at-
tract new residents and commercial opera-
tions to the village and I will work hard to see
that occur.
In conclusion I am honest, hard working
and listen well, all key traits to keeping a
community great! Thanks to everyone who
plans on voting!

These last few weeks have been the best.
I have traveled every gravel road and high-
way in Division 1. I have been on every door-
step and met the most wonderful people. I
have learned a great deal. While campaign-
ing, my desire to be a County Councillor has
strengthened. Having a positive relationship
with your ratepayers’ is the rst step in build-
ing trust.
For me, it is not about the politics but
about public service. I enjoy meeting people,
I am an excellent listener and I have the time
to commit to Council. I believe in serving the
interests of the majority and not spearhead-
ing any single agenda. I do understand thatagriculture is very important in the County
of Wheatland and there must be a balance
between it and other development. I believe
in researching the facts and would make my
decisions with common sense and fairness.
I would strive to bring a new energy and per-
spective to Division One. I am proud to live in
Wheatland County and want to contribute to
this dynamic and diverse county of Alberta.
I will do my very best to represent all of
you. Please exercise your democratic right
and make your way to your polling station
on October 18, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The poll-
ing stations for Division 1 are UFA Wheatland
Farm Services (intersection of 842 and 561)
and The Cluny Community Hall.

It is time for a new voice … your voice.

I feel I have a lot to offer as a councilor in
Rockyford. I have years of experience with
the organizations I deal with and know the
route each of the groups are taking. I was
born and raised here, left to pursue a career
in the Armed Forces and retired, with my
family, back to my home town. So I have a
lot of history here and a great love for the
area. I want our village to still be here a hun-dred years from now and strive to keep it
going and moving ahead. We all know we
need to keep the school and to encourage
people and businesses to move to our town
… that’s very important to me and I know we
can achieve these goals. I hope that when
you enter the voting booth on October 18th
you’ll vote for Jerry Katterhagen with my ex-
perience and the love of Rockyford.

The election Monday, October 18, 2010 is
your opportunity to voice your opinion on the
governance of our community: the Village of
Rockyford. It is important that you come out
and vote — be heard. Some key issues of
this election are:
• The Need for a Viable School
• Community Growth
• Infrastructure
• Taxes
Present council has been diligent in nd-
ing funding for our sewer lagoon expan-
sion, our subdivision development, and has
continued strong efforts in dening ways to
achieve a viable school in Rockyford. I would
like to continue and further contribute to the
accomplishments of Rockyford’s council.
I BELIEVE in preserving the heritage and
small town values of our village while look-
ing for ways to promote responsible growth.
I BELIEVE in keeping taxes low as we look at
ways of building Rockyford’s small town ap-
peal. But above all, I believe in and respect
the people of Rockyford for making this vil-
lage what it is: a great place to grow.
The Village of Rockyford constituents
should place an X beside my name because
I am committed to my community and it is
time to have a strong, effective voice for the
future of Rockyford. While preserving the
heritage of our village, my priorities are:
Planning and Development
I would ensure that The Rockyford School
remains open for our families and children.
This would also be vital to attracting families
and businesses to the Village of Rockyford.
A quality school curriculum, whether it is a
separate, public or private system in a local
setting is any parent’s ideal.
I would like to move forward and nalize
the planning and building of the proposed
sub-division to attract commuters from Cal-
gary. Our Village is only 45 minutes from theCalgary city limits and that could be very at-
tractive to so many people who are ready for
a lifestyle change.
Financial Responsibility
My aim is to eventually lower property tax-
es in Rockyford by generating interest in the
town through active promotion of our town
to fellow communities and Albertans. I would
like to begin a dialogue with Calgarians, real-
tors and developers to promote Rockyford.
I would encourage that www.rockyford.ca
be continually updated as an informative so-
cial internet presence is integral
in today’s society.
Infrastructure and Roads
In order to accommodate the
potential growth of Rockyford
the water and sewer systems as
well as the roads must be up-
graded. The possibility of shar-
ing this cost with developers
and the Provincial and Federal
governments must be pursued.
Partnerships with corporations
are also another funding option.
We need to explore new possi-
bilities for funding and not only
look at the conventional sourc-
es. EnCana Avenue, anyone?
I would proudly represent the
population of Rockyford and
would work with the people of
the town and the council to ac-
complish our goals.

I have been a resident of Wheatland Coun-
ty for the past six years and have lived in Di-

lege of meeting a lot of people from Division
2 through my work as well as volunteering
for the Ag society. I look forward to the op-
portunity to meet a lot more in the days lead-
ing up to election day.
On October 18th, the residence of Division
2 should vote for me because its time to get
a new perspective on the Wheatland Coun-
ty Council. I am a hard working and open-
minded individual. If elected I will strive to
make well informed decisions by research-
ing all the issues before council and seeking
input and opinions from the people of Divi-
sion 2. I am here to represent you and will do
so to the best of my ability. I am not afraid to
stand up for what I believe in.
My family and I are deeply invested in
the future of Wheatland County and I am
proud to have my children call this home. I
am willing to listen and excited to learn. I am
an outgoing person and enjoy working with
the public. I am not in this for the status, nor
is this just a job but my opportunity to be a
positive inuence on the future of Wheatland
County, the place I have chosen to raise my
family.
On October 18th please vote and make
your voice heard. I am asking you to please

you will not be disappointed!

In this issue of The Strathmore Times, can-
didates have been asked “ Why should a voter
mark X on the ballot beside your name?” If you
are satised with the status quo, then there is
no reason why you should. If, however, you be-
lieve it is time for fresh ideas and insights, then
it is important you cast your vote for someone
other than the incumbent.
Why, then, should that someone else be me?
I am sensible, fair, open-minded, and honest
with the necessary time to dedicate to the po-
sition. While I have no political experience, I am
a mature, civic minded, life-long learner. I have
no hidden agenda, but I do have some strong
convictions. I believe that it is crucial that de-
velopment in Wheatland County occur respon-
sibly, and that as we develop, the residents of
Wheatland County be considered rst, and be
treated with fairness and truthfulness.
If elected, I promise:
• Regular town hall meetings, keeping resi-
dents informed and encourage open discus-
sion.• I will put my very best effort into represent-
ing all the residents of Division 2.
• To treat all residents (hamlet, farm, and
acreage) fairly and with respect, and to listen
to their concerns, ideas, and questions, with
an open mind, so that I may properly represent
their points of view at council meetings.
Do you want to know more about me or my
platform? Need a ride to a Division 2 voting
station? Not sure of your division or where
to vote? Visit www.jackikirk.ca or call me at

Why would a voter mark an “X” beside Ken
Sauve’s Name?
On October 18, I would appreciate you
taking the time to vote. We all know it’s a very
busy time of year, but the decisions made
today affect your representation for the next
thee years regardless if you are voting for a
mayor, a councilor or a school board mem-
ber.
I decided to run for re-election as a coun-cilor because I enjoy representing the resi-
dents of Division #2 in the County of Wheat-
land and I believe I’m good at the job.
I have visited with most of you during this
campaign and called on every residence and
droped off information. Please take the time
to read it and if you have questions call me.
My phone numbers are 403-734-2165 and
403-369-6526.
As a councilor, I have strived to deal fairly
and honestly with people realizing that as
one voice on council, you work to resolve
residents issues in your area and issues that
affect the entire county. I will listen to your
concerns and bring them before council.
There is always a lot of issues to deal with
as your councilor and I think you would agree
that re-electing me as your representative,
with my knowledge and experience gained
in six years, would be a denite advantage.
Thank you for your past support and con-
dence and I ask you for your continued
support on October 18th. Polls for Division
#2 are at the County Ofce and at the Com-
munity Centre in Gleichen.
Ken
Sauve
There are several reasons why I am askingfor your vote on October 18th.
I was raised and currently live on an acre-
age north of Nightingale, I was bussed to
school in Strathmore and so are my children.
I have over 15 years working in municipal
government, I started in 1989 as a laborer
with the Town of Strathmore and worked my
way to the Supervisor of Operations position
with the Town of Irricana. I have an excellent
understanding of municipal operations in-
cluding budgeting, planning, infrastructure,
roads, water and sewer. I was a Level two
water and wastewater operator, a level two
reghter, and deputy director of disaster
services. I have also worked in the private
sector operating many water and wastewater
plants in the Bearspaw and Bragg Creek ar-
eas. In the last four years I have purchased a
trucking company in Strathmore with a part-
ner and, moved back to the acreage where Iwas raised. But, I still want to be involved in
municipal government and this is why I am
asking for your vote.
I have an open mind and I am always will-
ing to listen and learn the issues, I want to
hear all sides and fully understand any issue
before any decision is made. I want to help
make Wheatland County, Division 5 a better
place to live. Let me be your voice and thank
you in advance for your vote.
Scott
Klassen
Why should a voter mark X on the ballot
beside my name?
Marking an X beside my name in a step
in the right direction. I bring a fresh and bal-
anced perspective with the conviction of do-
ing the best job for Division 5 and County
residents and landowners.
With my experience in public relations,
and history of community service combined
with my knowledge of agricultural and busi-
ness makes me the right choice.Wheatland County is my home and my
roots run deep. Over the last several weeks,
I have enjoyed meeting many of you and lis-
tening to your concerns and I will be your
voice on council.
Brenda
Knight
I think voters should put an X by my name
because I have the experience. I believe that
I have shown scal responsibility over the
past six years. My phone lines are always
open to residents and people are encour-
aged to attend council meetings to stay in-
formed about what is going on. I never make
promises that I cannot keep as our budget is
very tight and a lot of the “extras” simply are
not a possibility.
I was born and raised in Hussar and am
now raising my family here. This Village and
its residents as well as the outlying com-
munity, who don’t get to vote, are my main
concern. I believe that we all must work as
a cohesive group in order to keep a com-
munity this size viable. It takes conversation,
people who are willing to listen and work as
a team. We run on grants and volunteers and
some things are just not possible without
this type of co-operation. I am always open
to new ideas and ways to achieve the goals
that we want.
It’s important to think about the major
things that need to be done to keep the Vil-
lage running as well as complying with the
government regulations, all of which cost
money. Once that is taking care of then we
can move into beautifying the Village. People
need to focus on the important things that
must happen to keep the village running and
they are always my rst priority.

On Election Day,
whether you choose
to vote for me is up
to you, but here are
a few things to keep
in mind when making
your decision. I am in-
vested in the future of
our community and amdedicated to promoting
long-term growth and prosperity to ensure my
children can enjoy the benets of small town
living with their own families one day.
The economic growth of many businesses
and organizations in our Village rests heavily
on the presence of a school here. Not only
does the availability of a school support eco-
nomic growth by providing an attractive back-
drop for young families, but it also provides
meaningful community engagement through
its relationship with the community, its resi-
dences and the local businesses. Therefore, I
will promote and work to the best of my ability
ensure that a strong school presence remain
in our community.
In addition, if elected another issue in focus
is to promote to increase the development of
the new subdivision in town, I hope to work
with the projects’ developer to eventually get
more spec home’s in the subdivision to en-courage and support future growth in our Vil-
lage.
Furthermore, as a Mother of two young
children I aim to promote the development of
more programs and activities, while continu-
ing to support existing programs for the youth
in our community. By encouraging and sup-
porting the youth in our community by devel-
oping new programs and supporting existing
one’s my hope is that our youth will continue
to be active participants here in our Village for

Meet the candidates
October 15, 2010 • Strathmore TIMES • Page 29
I must start by saying that I am not overly
fond of self promotion but I guess it has to
be done. Why should you vote for me? First,
I think I am all the regular things you should
be to pursue a job like trustee ... honest, trust-
worthy, hard working, enthusiastic ... etc. But
more importantly there are three things I thinkthat qualify me for this role.
I love our kids! I have dedicated my entire
working life to the well being of the students
in our school system. I would like continue my
involvement now that I am out of the schools.
I am, and always have been, a strong advo-
cate for students and their right to a superior
education.
I have 32 years of experience in the schools,
as a teacher, counsellor and administrator. I
think this gives me a good understanding of
the kinds of things trustees need to be aware
of and how those things affect students in the
classroom.
Finally, I recognize the importance of our
teachers and support staff. They are the heart
and soul of our system and deserve all the
consideration and support we can give them.
I hope to do that.
If you will, vote for me. If not, just be sure to
vote on the 18th. Thanks.
Many people have encouraged me to run
as a School Trustee in the upcoming election
so I have taken my comments from them.
• EXPERIENCED - have served as a trust-
ee in this system for 14 years over a period
of 23 years.
• KNOWLEDGEABLE - am very familiar
with Wheatland County, as I grew up in the
N.E. quadrant, taught, married and raised
our family in the Gleichen-Cluny area, and
moved as a family to Strathmore in1987. I
am familiar with the schools in the Drumhell-
er and Three Hills Municipal Division, and as
a farming family, we have done business in
these areas.
I also know the issues, having received
phone calls even when I am not on the board.
• APPROACHABLE - No situation or con-
cern is too small to discuss and I am easy
to talk to. Although my husband might dis-
agree, I am a good listener and responsive
to these concerns.
• HONESTY AND INTEGRITY - must be
part of a school board and a school system
as all educational leaders, educators and
trustees are in a position of trust.
• TRANSPARENCY - is essential if a
school system (including the board) is to
earn this trust.
I have always valued a School System that
stands for EXCELLENCE.
Please vote on Monday, October 18 at theStrathmore Civic Centre.
Janet
Bolinger
Why should a voter mark an X on the ballot
beside my name?
The reason a voter should mark an X be-
side my name is that during my two terms
as trustee I have strongly advocated for
children’s education. I’m deeply committed
to providing an ‘equitable’ education for all
students. I have the time and knowledge to
lobby the government for the funding and
resources to guarantee we can successfully
provide the programming needed to educate
our students. Our students deserve to have
access to a wide program of studies, work-
able class sizes and a suitable environment
for good quality learning. I will continue to
work with parents, teachers and community
members to provide these opportunities. I
am and will continue to be open, approach-
able, and accountable.I have spent a lifetime living and working
in this community and have enjoyed a long
history of volunteering for the betterment
of my community. Working with Wheatland
Further Education for over 25 years shows
I am committed and have a passion for pro-
viding educational opportunities for all ages.
I am open to new ideas, thus giving our
children, our greatest natural resource, the
opportunities and experiences that they will
need to deal with our fast paced and ever
changing world.
On October 18th I encourage all residents
to vote. I am asking for your vote ... vote
Joyce Bazant for school trustee.
JoyceBazant
Voters should mark an X beside my name
because of my experience. My family moved
to Hussar when I was in grade two. I st ill live in
Hussar and my children are going to the same
small rural school that I attended. I know the
challenges that small rural schools are facing.
Six years ago I sat on the Golden Hills School
Board for one (3 year) term. I am familiar with
board policy and procedure. I have served
on the Parent Council executive for the past
three years in Hussar. I have spoken with the
Education Minister about the issues and chal-
lenges facing our rural schools.
We need to do a better job engaging the
public. We need to have mutually agreeable
two way communication. We need to clearly
communicate to the public - the owners of the
system - the success stories of our schools,
what changes must be made and what these
changes will mean for students and parents.
I have been out speaking with voters about
their concerns and issues regarding their
schools. I truly care about our children’s ed-
ucation. I feel we need to maintain a school
presence in rural Wheatland County and ru-
ral Alberta. We need to lobby the Provincial
Government to fund rural schools differently
than our urban neighbors. I will be the voice
for your child at the board table.
Corey
Fisher
Robert

My children are young. Every decision that
is being made today affects them and ourquality of life. There have been many deci-
sions made by the current school board that
are not in the best interest of our children or
our communities. For the past ve years I
have stepped up and become involved in ed-
ucation because I believe that it is important
to my children’s future and to the future of our
communities and rural lifestyle. I am not afraid
to stand up for what is right. Our children’s
voice needs to be heard. When making deci-
sions that can so drastically change our lives
I will ensure that I have listened and heard all
viewpoints.
I will work towards ensuring that:
• Our children have stable community
schools to attend.
• Children’s time is spent in the classroom
not on a school bus.
• Our schools are properly staffed so that
our children’s safety and
education are not compromised.
• Parents and the public have an opportu-
nity to be involved in decision
making and are informed of decisions that
have been made.
• Specialty funding, such as small schoolby necessity, is directed to
those who generate it.
• Schools are funded by program not by
student number
Being a parent and having grown up in
Rockyford I know the challenges that all of us
face as parents and community members. I
also know that the most important thing we
can do for our future is to invest in our chil-
dren’s education. I want to ensure that every
child has access to the best education, and
that access should not based on where they
live. Rural children have a right to be educat-
ed.

At this level of government, I believe an
election is less about trying to convince peo-
ple to vote for me, than letting the public know
what I stand for, what strengths and perspec-
tives I bring to the ofce of trustee and then
letting the voters decide if I’m the person they
want for that ofce.
I am a rm believer in the importance of ru-
ral students receiving an excellent education. That is why I served for 13 years (1976-89) on
the Berry Creek School Division No. 1, nine of
those years as chair.
That is also why I ran last year and was
elected to nish out an incomplete term on the
Golden Hills School Division board. My pre-
vious years of school board experience give
me the experience to know the job of a school
board and its trustees, and my last year on
GHSD, has given me background to the par-
ticular challenges facing this division.
While there are students in Ward 5 who will
take all their schooling in Strathmore, there
are many others who will only take a portion
there or none at all, instead attending school
in the communities of Rockyford, Carseland,
Hussar, Gleichen or Standard. While these
schools can’t offer the variety of programming
options Strathmore schools can, I believe they
can and do offer the solid educational basis
students need in order to achieve their goals
and dreams.
I believe that it is important to maintain a
school presence in communities where oneexists, especially for the sake of the younger
students. As such I think GHSD needs to con-
tinue to support these smaller schools, be-
cause rural education is less about buildings
than it is students, teachers and communities
that care, and this area has them all.

With a handul o regular season contests al-ready in the books, the Wheatland Chies arestill ironing out some kinks in their game. That’s a scary proposition or opposing teams,
as the local AA midget hockey squad is knockingon the door or frst place in the league with asolid 2-1-1 record.
“We’re a big team, so we should be physical, we have lots o speed, lots o talent – we have agood balance o goal scorers and playmakers,”said Chies head coach Devin Olsen when eval-uating his team. “We have everything you can
want to make a good hockey team, we just haveto put it together.
“I we work hard, we’re going to do well.” Ater splitting a pair o road games to open
the season, the Chies hosted the Calgary RoyalsSWAA Gold in their home opener on Oct. 8 atthe Strathmore Family Centre.
Cody Burndred had a goal and two assists, while Justin Fraser, Brad Bergerman and ArronDurant each scored once to propel the Chies to
a 4-4 draw. Tyson Kapty, Matthew Queiroga, James Price,
Scott Butters, Rylan Muenchrath and Abe Jenseneach added an assist, while goaltender DanielBaigent made 35 saves or the Chies.
“We didn’t show up – we knew what they would be like – we came out in the frst shit andscored and we let them do what they do,” saidOlsen. “We only showed up or 10 minutes o this game. It was (our home opener), we shouldhave been pumped up – I don’t think that was aactor, we just didn’t come to play.”
However, the Chies certainly showed up intheir next game, a 7-2 road win versus the RedDeer Elks on Oct. 10. Alex Bechtold scored twice, while Fraser and
Durant each added a goal and an assist to lead
the way or the Chies. Price, Butters, Devon Westby also tallied or Wheatland, while Muen-chrath added a pair o assists. According to Olsen, balanced scoring is pivotal
or the team’s success.“All our lines have been scoring or us,” said
the coach. “Pretty much every kid on the team
has a point – it’s not one line or one kid doingall the work.“We have our lines that go hard, they all have
talent and they can all score goals, which is nice.” The Chies were back in action Oct. 13 in
Calgary against the NWCAA Bruins (results notavailable as o press time), beore traveling toCranbrook this weekend to take on the Ice Oct.16.WARRIORS SPLIT
Ater losing 12-4 to Cranbrook Oct.9, Wheat-land Warriors AA bantam team opened their home schedule with a 7-4 win over the Taber Golden Suns Oct. 10.
Cody Willis scored twice, while Sebastian Wit-tenburg put on a clinic with our assists to leadthe way or the Warriors. Tyler Sharuga added agoal and two assists, while Taylor Donner, McK-
ay Bray, William Conley and Shane Frazer eachscored once or Wheatland. The Warriors will now host the Okotoks Oilers
Oct. 16, 5 p.m. at the Strathmore Family Centre. BRAVES FALTER IN HOME OPENER
The Wheatland Braves AA bantam team ell to0-3 on the season, ater losing their home open-er 4-2 to Red Deer Parkland Oct. 9 at the Strath-more Family Centre.
Kody Hammond and Riley Romashenkoeached scored once or the Braves, while Mat-thew Quigley, Sarah Lecavalier, Tyler Pitrie andKaden Hanas each added an assist. The Braves will now travel to Red Deer or the
rubber-match on Oct. 16, beore hosting the RedDeer TPS Oct. 17, 4:15 p.m. at the StrathmoreFamily Centre.

The Wheatland Kings Junior B hockey team remained undefeated
on home ice after a 6-2 win over the Ponoka Stampeders Oct. 9 at
the Strathmore Family Centre. Mark Goodman and Lucas Ford each
scored twice and added an assist, while Racey Big Snake added agoal and an assist. Despite a solid effort the following day in Coaldale,

The UFA Bisons were 41 second away from taking both games from the Cal-gary Northstars this past weekend. After a solid 7-3 dismantling of the
Stars in Calgary Oct. 6, the Bisons al-lowed the tying goal in the nal minuteof regulation Oct. 10 at the StrathmoreFamily Centre.
Despite the 3-3 tie, taking three of four points when you get the chance isdenitely a bonus.
In Calgary, Torrin White had twogoals and three assists, while Sam John-son had two goals and an assist. Luke
Philp added a goal and two assists, asthe Bisons stormed out to a 5-0 leadheading into the third period.
Despite taking penalty after penalty, the Bisons scored three shorthandedmarkers in the win.
However, defensive breakdowns inthe third period allowed Calgary tomake some hay.
“The rst two periods, I though weplayed great,” said assistant coach Jer-emy Friesen. “The rst 10 minutes of the rst period, we dominated, we con-trolled the play and then we kind of
backed off and started cheating a little bit and taking shortcuts.
“We addressed that in the rst inter-
mission and came out in the second and were rewarded with some goals.
“We went out there (in the third) andkind of laid an egg. We took shortcutsand allowed them in the game for a lit-tle while.”
On Sunday, Philp scored twice to leadthe offence, while White added a pair of helpers. Mitch McAllister also scoredfor the Bisons. The herd will now prepare for a pair
of home games this weekend at theStrathmore Family Centre. The 2-0-2 Bi-sons will host another undefeated team, the Calgary Flames, Oct. 15, 8 p.m. The Bisons will then host the Grande
Prairie Storm on Oct. 17, 2 p.m.
Bisons take three of four points over Stars
The UFA Bisons ham-
mered the Calgary North-
stars 7-3 on Oct. 6, beore
both teams settled or a
3-3 draw on Oct. 10 at theStrathmore Family Centre.
