From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto … I wish to thank all of you dear parishioners for your

great amount of prayers, gifts, cards and joyful well wishing on my birthday!

Let us listen to some words from Pope Francis about our present situation, especially for us Floridians:

“The suspension of international flights, the closing of airports and borders, the adoption of severe travel restrictions, even internal, is causing an unprecedented crisis in many sectors connected to the tourism industry. It is feared that in the worst of hypotheses, at the end of 2020 there will be a drop of about a billion international tourists, with a global economic loss of some 1,200 billion dollars. This would result in an enormous loss of jobs in the entire tourism sector.

Even worse than this crisis is the tragedy of squandering it...At this moment, in the great effort of beginning anew, how damaging is pessimism, the tendency to see everything in the worst light and to keep saying that nothing will return as before!

In these weeks we are witnessing numerous popular protests all over the world - in many parts - expressing the growing unease of civil society in the face of particularly critical political and social situations. While I urge the demonstrators to present their demands peacefully, without giving in to the temptation of aggression and violence, I appeal to all those with public and governmental responsibilities to listen to the voice of their fellow citizens.”

The pope also has an interesting observation of some “who go to Mass every Sunday, who say they are Christian, but who have lost awareness of their sin.”

In the Gospel of today, Jesus continues His theme of the rejection of the proclamation of the Kingdom by some of his fellow Jews. We Gentiles are pre-figured in that anonymous “whomever you find,” so that we inherited the Kingdom, and we are the “last ones who will be first” into Paradise, ahead of the chosen people, our revered ancestors in the faith, the Jews, to whom the promise of salvation still stands, because God’s love to them is everlasting!

But again, as St. Augustine remarked, there is an allegory hidden in Jesus’ parable which is appropriately applicable to us Christians. How easy it is to put money, job, social status and pleasures ahead of Jesus’ Kingdom, and of our eternal glory in Paradise! Let us be smart and put Jesus as number One in our hearts. Let us find peace in His Sacred Heart and in the Immaculate Heart of our heavenly Mother, Mary. When at Mass we hear the priest crying out “lift up your hearts”, then we know that it is time to let go of worldly realities and let God inside our hearts.

World Mission Sunday is next weekend. We are called in a special way - through prayer, personal sacrifice and participation in the Eucharist - to share our faith, to be missionaries, and to fulfill our Baptismal responsibility for the worldwide missionary task of the Church. The following is a message from our beloved Bishop Frank J. Dewane: “World Mission Sunday, this year on the weekend of October 17-18, is our annual worldwide Eucharistic celebration for the Missions and missionaries of the world. Pope Francis reminds us, especially in this year of crisis, that we are

personally called to mission - as baptized Catholics - to bring Christ's love to those most forgotten, our brothers and sisters in need around the world. He asks us to respond on that Sunday through prayer and generous sacrifice to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, encouraging your parishioners to answer, “Here I Am, Send Me.” Through the Pope's own missionary society, your parishioners are also able to be sent out to all the ends of the earth - sent through their support of missionaries and those they serve. Their very needed gifts sustain priests, religious and lay pastoral leaders in more than 1,100 mission dioceses in Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe. With them, they answer, “Here I Am, Send Me."

With gratitude for the generosity you encourage to the Missions in October and year-round, and with prayers for a fruitful celebration for the Mission Church, I remain.”

How time flies! We are already at the second Sunday of this month of October, which is particularly dear to our Catholic hearts for two reasons. First, because it is the Month of the Rosary, the loving chain of angelic salutations which binds us to Jesus’ life and to His, and our Blessed Mother. Second, because it is the Month of Life, when we celebrate life, and we decide to fight anything that threatens human life: Racism, Abuse, Abortion, Discrimination, Murder, Pornography, Exploitation, Euthanasia, Slavery, War, Injustice and so forth. If we, the followers of the Creator of Life, if we the heirs of eternal life, if we who uphold God’s commandments, do not fight for life, who will? Not the abortionists with their abortuaries, nor the various Kevorkians with the killing of the sick and elderly, nor the dictators of this earth with their madness, nor the criminals who roam the streets of our cities raping and killing innocent people… if not us, who then?

So, during October, pray the Rosary for peace and all the evil we are dealing with today.

October 11 is the feast of one of my favorite saints, St. John XXIII. Born of a farming family in Sotto il Monte in northern Italy in 1881, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was ordained a priest in 1904. After serving in World War I as a stretcher-bearer, he was later made national director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. In 1925 he became a papal diplomat, serving in Bulgaria, Turkey and in France. With the help of Germany’s ambassador to Turkey, Roncalli helped save an estimated 24,000 Jewish people during World War II. Named a cardinal and appointed patriarch of Venice in 1953 by Pope Pius XII, he was elected pope in 1958 at age seventy-eight. He took the name John after his father and the one patron of Rome’s cathedral, St. John Lateran. He convoked (1959) the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965); his most famous encyclicals were Mater et Magister (1961) and Pecem in Terris (1963). “Good Pope John” died of stomach cancer June 3, 1963. His feast day, October 11, recalls the day of the first session of the Second Vatican Council (1962). Declared a Blessed in 2000, he was canonized, together with Pope John Paul II, by Pope Francis on April 27, 2014.

Are you 70 ½ years old and have a retirement account?

The federal tax law allows donors to give directly from their retirement account to a charity while avoiding the usual tax associated with IRA and 401k withdrawals, and the IRS does not count the transfer as income for federal tax purposes. Plus, qualified contributions may be counted toward the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), which are mandatory starting at age 72 but can begin at age 70 1/2. Donating via your retirement account is a simple process. Please contact Teressa McCoy in the Parish Office at 941-366-4210 or at [email protected] and we can provide you with details and instructions.

Thank you for your support of St. Martha Parish. Our parishioners are our only source of funds and your

contributions keep the lights on, enable parish ministries, and support our outreach to the poor.

Prayer for Safety During Hurricane Season The 2020 Hurricane Season officially beginning on June 1 and will continue until November 30. All are encouraged to pray for protection from the storms that often threaten Southwest Florida.

The devastation of recent hurricanes reinforce the fact that we need to pray for God's protection and care.

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awaken from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies, whose memories are still so vivid, and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen.

Casa Santa Marta which is home to 140 low income seniors and people with disabilities. Both residents and staff have been proactive in maintaining the safety of all; taking necessary steps to ensure that all common areas remain sanitized and social distance is maintained. Since March, only two residents have tested positive for COVID-19. Both residents have been able to recover with medical supervision and are doing well at home. During these times, Casa Santa Marta residents have received food donations from All Faiths Food Bank and Senior Friendship Centers which made it easier for this vulnerable population to quarantine.
