SOURIS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER http://schools.shmb.ca/sci. Number 3, October 11, 2013 NEWS FROM MR. WILLIAMS Hi, everyone. After a week of beautiful weather, mother nature decided that we needed a shower. It is still rather warm outside but the rain will put a damper on completion of the harvest. Thank you to Mr. Penner and all students, staff, and parents who supported the annual Terry Fox run/walk. It turned out to be a beautiful day for a stroll. Once again, the event was very well supported. I would like to take this time to acknowledge all the coaches and managers of our sports teams. Presently, we have volleyball at the middle years, junior varsity and varsity levels, football at the varsity level, rugby at all levels, and hockey at the varsity level going on at Souris School. A conservative estimate would be that we have 150+ students taking advantage of the opportunities that are being provided to them. Whether you are a staff member or a community member, the time, the energy, and the commitment you display are greatly appreciated. Without volunteers these sports would not occur and these students would not have a program to be involved in. I would also like to acknowledge the parents who spend numerous hours on the road and numerous dollars paying for fees, food, and drink. Thank you for providing your children a chance to participate in these activities. Lastly, I would like to acknowledge our students who consistently display positive attitudes and good sportsmanship. Each time you participate in these activities you act as ambassadors of our school and our community. Please continue to do a wonderful job representing Souris School and the community of Souris. SOCIAL JUSTICE FIGHTERS Hey Everyone, We are the Social Justice Fighters! To start the year off, we have taken on the challenge of collecting Tassimo T Discs and packaging to be recycled. For every disc and package we collect and send into Terracycle, we will receive 1 penny. We all know that pennies can add up!! The money we receive back will go towards our future project’s fund. Your discs do not have to be cleaned out, simply bring them to the drop off box in front of the office at Souris School. This collection will be ongoing all year. Thank you…from Mother Earth SHOUT OUT FOR BOOKS After doing some summer reading of my own, I am following up on a suggestion to reach out to the community to help stock my classroom library. Generally I am looking for any grade 6, 7, or 8-level books taking up space in your house that you might like to donate to the school. Specifically my class has mentioned the Percy Jackson series, the Wrush series, Maximum Ride, The Hardy Boys, and/or Scott Westerfeld and Gary Paulson.

CAMPBELL’S SOUP “LABELS FOR EDUCATION” THANK YOU to everyone who clips and saves those labels and UPC codes. If you use these products then save those labels – Campbell’s Condensed soup, Chunky soup, Broth, Ramen Hearty Noodles, Ramen Hearty Noodles, Ready to serve soup, Habitant, Gardennay, Soup at Hand, V8Soups, Easy cooking sauces along with Prego sauce, V8 Splash/Fusion, Pace Salsa, Goldfish crackers. Collection bins are at the school, Big Way and Robbins Fine Foods. It seems like a lot of work but the labels would be just heading to the garbage anyways. The school appreciates everyone that has supported this program, so keep on saving those labels. Remember, both the label and UPC are needed. •Glenda McConnell
